CD Jr.'s final Killer Instinct tier list

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • July 4, 2014 at 5:12 p.m. PDT

KN|CD Jr. took to Twitter this morning in order to share his Killer Instinct season 1 tier list.

Known for his Sadira/Jago play and making top 8 in numerous KI events, including first at East Coast Throwdown 2014, CD Jr. has listed the characters from rank best to worst in KI.

The breakdown comes to us in the categories of S+, S, and A tier characters, and CD Jr. notes that this list will remain unchanged until season 2 drops.

You'll find his original tweet with the Killer Instinct tier list below.

I said this before, but I don't think matchups are that much of a factor in this game, at least compared to other fighting games. Everyone is pretty balanced and even the most rough of matchups, like Fulgore x Spinal, are still pretty manageable.

What's next? a tier list for all the characters you can play as in Uncharted? Kappa.

B doesn't mean "hard to win with", it means "average".
You can't rank every character in the game "above average".

To maintain the same rankings but have some sense it'd be
S - Sabrewulf (or S+ depending on how far above the next tier you think he is)
A - Sadira, Jago, Spinal
B - everyone else

I don't really think it matters. Either way, we're reading it as "Good, better, best".

That's interesting. Have yet to see a Spinal in Top 8 of any KI sortie.

I am a beginner compared to my friend whom owns the game and plays it on a regular. With that said, I will have to agree about Sabrewolf being on top. I gave my friend a run for his money when I used him after learning the basics. Everyone else on the list I cannot comment on. I will admit though that his Jago was annoying.

If we're being technical how can B character be average if there's nothing below them?

When half the cast is tied for last they can be.

I don't want to sound negative, but S is 3 characters lumped together and A is everyone else???

seems like you coulda' put in a LITTLE more work for a game that has 8 guys...

Good call. If we are ranking only from S+ to B, how do we know B is average when we have nothing to compare below average?

#23
MisguidedAngel said on July 5, 2014 at 11:33 a.m.

Not really... say you do 2+2+2+2 (B tier), 3+3+3 for A tier, and +4 for S tier... divide that number by 8... it rounds out to A tier for the average.

Well yeah, but you can choose different numbers and round or not to get any result you want for the final average, yo. :^P

Anyway, you're right about "the average" usually requiring a bottom tier below it to be an average. But the way I've always seen tier lists interpreted is similar to what this ST tier list has- http://wiki.shoryuken.com/Super_Stree...

Assuming two players of equal skill, etc:
S and above - Significant advantage, bordering on broken, occasionally actually broken; doesn't require very many changes of plan for different matchups, and can create a great many situations that are to their advantage. Plays the game the way they want. Huge advantage over characters in below tiers, only has to really think vs characters above them. Mostly favorable matchups.
A - Great advantage over characters in below tiers. Can beat S-tier characters if there is some skill advantage or luck. Can create a large number of situations that are advantageous or even. Has to think vs characters equal to or above them. Often referred to as "solid" characters. Mostly favorable or even matchups.
B - Can win often vs characters in the same tier, and can win vs A-tier with some work or luck, but has a difficult time winning vs S-tier. Generally referred to as "average" or "okay" characters. Mostly even matchups.
C - Has to put in work to win vs B tier but can do it, has to work extremely hard to wn vs A tier, and is basically screwed vs S-tier unless the B-tier player significantly outplays the S-tier player. Few if any favorable matchups. Generally referred to as "maybe you should pick someone else" characters. Lots of losing matchups.
D and below - Characters you are lucky to win with vs B tier, and which require A or S players to be asleep or make multiple major mistakes. Generally referred to as "joke" characters. Mostly losing matchups, few if any even matchups, seldom has any advantageous matchups.

So "B" is more about what they can do in the game, as in "average performance for a fighting game character".

I just don't want tier lists to go through inflation like game reviews did. Just because everyone does basically the same damage and can pull out 50%+ with the right reactions doesn't make every character "A" tier.

i wanna know what he is basing this list off of. If it was based off of match ups jago would be next to or above wulf. If it was overall potential Fulgore wouldn't be on the same tier as orchid. Either way, good list.

Santaclaus said on July 6, 2014 at 5:35 a.m.

i would have thought spinal and Glacius to be in switched places. then I would have agreed 100% with this list

Hitbox Tyrant came 3rd at UFGT X.
@emp_fecalmatter: Khoalski is good but doesn't go to tournaments so doesn't count for the conversation at hand.

I'm totally agree with you, matchups in this game have less importance than other fighting games because of the fact of "Combo Breakers" and "counter-breakers" which can avoid the damage taken.

So due to that, most of the characters are quite well balanced.

According to CD Jr and his tiers-list, I'm totally agree with him too : Wulf actually have "a bit" too much tools to avoid zoning/footsies + 180° antiair eclipse easy to do and can avoid easily all type of antiairs even cross-up for the same command (2-8 -_-), a very good backdash=try to mix-up him at lift-up etc.

Finally I'm agree with the rest of the tiers-list too, not too many characters too, so an easy tiers-list to do.

Kaya said on July 6, 2014 at 4:03 p.m.

Yes S tier
Do you even know Khoalski or Hitbox Tyrant? They'll show you how to play Spinal

Yes Spinal is hard to play, that's true, probably the hardest of the roster (due to skulls management + all the tools he have + teleport management + set-ups etc) but when you have done the job with him, you will success.

So yes, S tier easy for Spinal.

I forgot Sadira ofc, for me, S+ with Wulf due to his instinct and unbreakable combo -_-
