EVO 2014 beta brackets are out; pending review

Posted by Cheng Kai 'KarbyP' Sim • July 2, 2014 at 8:37 a.m. PDT

The pool brackets for EVO 2014 are out!

Well, the beta brackets, at least. These brackets are subject to change, as Mr Wizard and the EVO 2014 organising committee are currently soliciting feedback from EVO 2014 to make sure that everything checks out.

Which pool of players are you in? And, more important, which pool of players are notable players in?

Find out at this page here.

As you're looking through the pools, if you spot any problems in the brackets -- for instance, if you find yourself listed in the pools for two or more different games in the same time slot -- please click on the "send feedback" problem to let the organisers know.

At the moment you'll simply have to open all of the pool pages in new tabs one by one until you find your name. But the EVO organising committee is looking to implement a search feature on the site real soon, to make it easier to find which pool you're in.

There's way too many pools for us to comb through and tell you which notable players are in which, so we're going to solicit your help on that, EventHubs readers!

Let us know in the comments if you've spotted a notable player in a particular pool! We'll update this story later in the day to include all of your findings.

Just a quick foreword before you go though: don't forget that these are beta brackets and may be subjected to change!

can anyone explain me how they do the brackets?its a random thing or they try to put a strong player in a pool with less known players?

Sorry for the ignorance, but does this mean USF4 will only be on the 11th?

#6
MortonBaths said on July 2, 2014 at 8:54 a.m.

Strong players get seeded so that they don't run into each other early in the tournament, and everything else is random. Atleast that how i've seen them run in the past. I think seeding is done through capcom points.

At the end of Friday, they will finish off with top 8. No SF on Saturday. On Sunday, the last event will be top 8 Ultra SF4.

They really should spread out the matches like top 64 on Saturday. then top 16 on Sunday.

Why do people get so hype about Japanese players? Yes, there are a lot of killers in Japan but not every Japanese player is good. People were talking about how CEO was gonna be crazy because of all the Japanese players getting flown in by Twitch and if memory serves me correctly, they all got eliminated by an American.

#19
Yung said on July 2, 2014 at 9:08 a.m.

#21
jimmyeatsquaids said on July 2, 2014 at 9:11 a.m.

well that's a pretty naive way of thinking. if you just do the brackets randomly then the best players might have to face each other very early. we could be seeing a "bad" player in top 32 just because top players already kicked each other out earlier. the known good players should be scattered around in all pools, so that they have to start facing each other in top 32 or later. otherwise it will be even more up to luck who will win evo.

ltalia90 said on July 2, 2014 at 9:30 a.m.

Just skimming through the USF4 pools and was going to post a quick review of how things might shape up in top 8 but it's just too ridiculous to even begin. Just about every match to qualify for semis could be the grand finals of a major.

To illustrate how insane Evo is, this is how SECTION A looks. They're in order so you can work out possible matches down the line in that section.

Infiltration/Yossan/KogiKOG/Dieminion vs Xiao Hai/Acqua
Kazunoko/Rico Suave Vs Alioune/Eita
Tokido/Snake Eyez Vs Kyabetsu/Tampa Bison/ Poem
Xian/NGL Chris Vs Louffy

Every one of those possible matches is just to QUALIFY for SEMIS.

The eventual winner of SECTION A will play the winner of SECTION B to qualify for Top 8. Section C Vs Section D, E Vs F and H Vs G.

All 8 sections are similarly stacked.

Some other highlights:

- PR Rog and Sako are close together in their section. Could be a top 32 match.
- Alex Myerrs is in the same POOL as Haitani.
- Alioune is registered. He's in Noah's pool.
-All of the twitch.tv Japanese players are in the same quarter finals pool with Infiltration, Dieminion and Xiao Hai. Hopefully that changes.
-Daigo is in pool E59 with Emersion.
-For those wondering about Smug: He's in the same quarter finals pool as Justin Wong, Chris G and Dakou.
-Mike Ross is in the same quarter finals pool as Bonchan.

I'm sure things will be moved around further still, that first quarter finals pool needs changing for sure, IMO.

Gotomaster said on July 2, 2014 at 9:31 a.m.

The only one who thinks they are all good is Remondo. But, every one of those players has seen some success in Japanese arcades. And remember, his first real tournament, and Nishikin made top 32, and being narrowly defeated by Infiltration. It took the best players to eliminate the names who made it to CEO, and that was only 3, now you have well around 100 players from japan scattered in pools, they will indeed be doing some damage at evo. I see lots of big names being eliminated early.

#26
WongFactor said on July 2, 2014 at 9:31 a.m.

Why does Nuki get special treatment?

#27
Devrae said on July 2, 2014 at 9:37 a.m.

They just happen to have some of the worlds best character specialist. Its just nice to see a character being played at its fullest potential. Win or lose, its still entertaining.

We obviously have some of the worlds best character specialist as well, but they have the rest of the cast covered. Europe has Louffy and Alioune, South east asia has Xian and Gamerbee.

#28
KarbyP said on July 2, 2014 at 9:38 a.m.

I think it's more like, if Nuki and Bonchan are in the same pool, then those 2 (1 in winners', 1 in losers') are likely to be the ones making out of that pool.

If you were an EVO participant in that pool, you'd probably object to that.

With that said, I don't know. That's my conjecture. Mr Wizard and the EVO guys are trying to make this tournament as awesome as possible.

#29
Gotomaster said on July 2, 2014 at 9:45 a.m.

Nuki is considered one of the five gods of Japanese fighting games. To have him and Bonchan in the same pool would be like having Justin and Tokido in the same pool. I know it sucks that popularity plays a factor in players getting the best pool treatment, but remember that Evo is just as much a spectacle as it is a tournament. No one would watch an Evo that has less known players in finals just because the best/popular cannibalized eachother early on.

Just to clean up a little error in this post:

Section A

Infiltration/Yossan/KogiKOG/Dieminion vs Xiao Hai/Acqua
Kazunoko/Rico Suave Vs Alioune/Eita

Section B

Tokido/Snake Eyez Vs Kyabetsu/Tampa Bison/ Poem
Xian/NGL Chris Vs Louffy

I forgot to split them into two sections and posted all of those possible matches as Section A.

So basically the winner of Section A plays the winner of Section B for a spot in top 8.

e.g. Infiltration (winner of Section A) Vs Tokido (Winner of section B). The winner between those two makes it to top 8.

I don't mean to sound like a antagonist, but they might want to review the brackets BEFORE putting them out for further review.
I mean, common sense and 15 mins of review can tell you something was wrong with Bonchan and Nuki in the same bracket, or two canadians in the same bracket while there are MANY brackets with only US players. C'mon.

The precedence should be ranking, locale, common sense, then random, in my opinion. Anyways, hope the best players get thru instead of eliminating each other... not that an lesser known player can't be good. Just sayin'.

EVO would get more viewers if they have an "American hope" in the top16-top 8, so they rig the brackets like this.

Sadly, more people know who PR Balrog or J Wong is than Nuki or Bonchan. Heck, more people probably kno who K Brad and Wolfkrone are, lol.

Sad, but it's the world we live in. If people don't look like them then the American fans won't root for them, regardless how better the Asian players are.

Doubt I'll be watching Evo this year. Players perfromances based on how people decided to rig the brackets? Where's the fairness in that?

#72
getsaltier said on July 2, 2014 at 5:13 p.m.

Guys, send your feedback from the brackets page to the EVO staff about these stacked brackets for USF4. There are still pools which do not have any notable players but there are some pools with multiples.

The big ones:
B48 - Ryan Hart / Floe
C62 - Sako / Laugh
E45 - Kokujin / Alex Valle

Some others:
A48 - Jozhear / Xiao Hai
A53 - Edma / Shinba
B56 - Haitani / Alex Myers
C43 - Gamerbee / Oppore
C45 - Jayce the Ace / Zegenn
D49 - Gackt / Alex Smith / Julio
D56 - Misse / Hugo 101
E41 - Chris G / Hoodaman
E51 - Ricky Ortiz / Omgitzandre
E56 - Dogura / Bananaken

These pools don't have notable players and would be good places to move them to.

A - 52/58/62
B - 41/45/47/53/55/57/59
C - 41/44/49/50/51/61
D - 59/64/65
E - 48/50/52/53/58/64

While pools are not technically finalized, they are probably pretty close, so I went through all the pools and filled out the brackets (starting at Quarterfinals) for who I thought would win. To anyone who thinks the brackets are rigged against the Japanese, it is theoretically possible for Daigo, Sako, Tokido, Mago, Fuudo, Bonchan, Kazunoko, and Haitani to all make top 8 as they go in different bracket paths.

What are everyone's thoughts on my predictions? I have Sako taking it over Kazunoko. Or maybe I missed someone in pools that could have a big impact on how it turns out! (I also have Gamerbee getting knocked out early by Jayce the Ace)

#85
hondahands said on July 3, 2014 at 4:10 a.m.

According to Beast_Gief and Remondo, EVO should be the top 64 all Japanese players (because there are 65 japanese entrants). The "known" japanese players are:
Kazunoko
Tokido
Haitani
momochi
Fuudo
Hori sako
mago
Dogura
Bonchan
Daigo
Kyabetsu
chocoblanka (smile)

According to them, that should be your top 16, the rest are all top 64 "hidden masters". No US/Canadian/European have a chance to make top 64.

My prediction for EVO this year. Maybe 1 or 2 US/European/Canadian/Chinese in top 8.

MANY upsets, many "known" Japanese players (of the 13 I listed) will NOT be in the top 8. Some of the "hidden masters" will make top 32. The "hidden japanese masters" when compared at the end, will most likely not out perform the "known" non-japanese pros.

Top 16/32 Will have many of the known US/European/Canadian players.

USF4 hasn't been out long enough to mature yet, I think Japan still has the advantage but the rest of the world is slowly "closing the gap". My bets are on EVO 2015, not EVO 2014 because they game is too new, and too unpredictable to forecast serious results. 2014 tournament will likely have even MORE japanese players, and probably 2 or 3 US/European players in top 8 in 2015.

On the comment #87 above I meant "2015 tournament will likely have even MORE japanese players, and probably 2 or 3 US/European players in top 8 in 2015".

I place my "US/Europe/Canada slowly closing the Gap" theory against Remondo's "Hidden Japanese Masters are better than Daigo, Tokido, Sako and other 'famous' Japanese" and all American Pros"

My theory really won't start to show results till around EVO next year.

I am hoping we see glimpses of it taken place at EVO, not likely, but hopeful.

lolilol PRrog was destroyed in topanga world. And it wasn't FT2 tournament but FT7. I was so traumatised he decided to switch character. Just try to find is match against daigo, or bonchan. If haitani decide to play rufus I don't give a chance to PRrog. Last questions? Is there an american winner in EVO history? nope... Is there an american player who just passed the second match in the history of super battle opera tougeki? Nope..... The 5 gods won this tournament multiple times on different games waaayyyy more difficult to play than USF4 (SF2X, SF3.3, SFzero, vampire savior, guilty gear). Americans and occident upgraded since the last years but most of the technologies came from this kind of players first. Try to know what you're talking about next time.

And don't underestimate europeans:

Popi beat infiltration at dreamhack
louffy won against daigo, fudo, haitani, jwong, dieminion, mago, kindevu, in european tournaments. He lost just before the top 16 against xian in last year's EVO.
alioune destroyed 80% of his opponent in fightnight in FT7 including infiltration (7-5), laugh (7-0), ryan heart (7-5), chi-ritty (7-3 mostly with yang) , Kbrad (7-3 mostly with juri). He lost against xian(6-7 last match last round).

ryan heart came to US two or three times to win tournaments and he is the only one in europe who beat luffy coinsistently.

Honestly I don't know who can win this year EVO.

tokido, infiltration, daigo, kazunoko, Jwong, PRrog could make it easily to top 16. But this game is very oriented on matchups and we have one speciallist of nearly all the characters (44). I hope there willbe some surprises. But it will be entertaining.

With this format anything could happen and nobody will get "easily" to top 16. I bet many surprises are awaiting us. I wouldn't be surprised if Daigo didn't get top 8 (for once ^^)

Based on bracket progression, top 8 for USF4 will very likely be made up of:

Infiltration or Xiao Hai
Tokido or Xian
Haitani
Momochi, Gamerbee or Fuudo
PR Rog or Sako
K-Brad or Mago
Dakou or Bonchan
Daigo

In summary, Daigo and Haitani are almost a lock for top 8.

Have the brackets changed significantly over the last day? Because I have Haitani playing Fuudo as a possible match to qualify for top 8 winners side. I don't see how he is a lock.

F.Champ vs Daigo right after pools. Out of all the people in the US, only F.Champ has beaten daigo in a tournament (other than some random ultra victory).

But then again, Daigo's EVO last year was insane. Hopefully this year will be a little more fair to japanese players. Last year: Daigo faced Tokido (his own team mate) before top eight. Imagine if JWong and Ricky had to face each other. Also they had Daigo fight Bonchan even before that. Daigo's pool had f-word, marn, and jr rodriguez; lol.

With as many top players as there are at Evo, a match like Daigo vs Tokido is almost impossible to avoid before top 8. Just look at how good the people are in top 16, or even top 32.

PRrog did okay in some of his sets. Infiltration was the one who got destroyed.

America has won every Marvel tournament at evo.
