The commentary is only good because they brought Gootecks. If this had two Esports commentators it would be painful.

#15
p0wderedtoastman said on January 27, 2014 at 1:09 p.m.

The thing feels pre-recorded, the other commentator (not Gootecks) has no clue what to say, and this feels like a soulless event. No heart, man.

Why are they having a SC2 commentator do this event? Why? He has no idea what to say.

#19
skitz0phrenic said on January 27, 2014 at 1:12 p.m.

It feels pre-recorded because it is pre-recorded. ESGN pre-records all of their stuff in an enormous studio complex.

Jen confirmed for 5th character.

#21
TagAnarchy said on January 27, 2014 at 1:15 p.m.

My only qualm is that this is pre-recorded and that there is no actual audience. The audience I can understand so that the players can stay focused, but having it be prerecorded is a little saddening. It just doesn't feel... right to me.

#22
Devrae said on January 27, 2014 at 1:17 p.m.

Give the commentator a break. He probably assumed that "Gen" is pronounced as "Jen" in most of the English language? Generous, Geneva, Gentlemen, etc...

#23
WhimsyRoll said on January 27, 2014 at 1:18 p.m.

Commentating can be better. All they talk about is meter, momentum, and connecting. It isn't live, but I do like the idea of a game show like this.

#24
p0wderedtoastman said on January 27, 2014 at 1:19 p.m.

Why should he be given a break when he shouldn't be commentating in the first place?

If the eSports scene is serious about bringing the FGC into the fold, why not bring in our seasoned commentators that are known to be knowledgeable and good for general audiences (ie UltraChen)?

This just feels so empty and fake.

#25
ShinzoBishamon said on January 27, 2014 at 1:19 p.m.

You guys really need to relax with all the criticizing, the production value is great. The commentary might not be the best, but the guy has some working knowledge of the game. Lets not be so negative and let the e sports community help us grow.

#28
p0wderedtoastman said on January 27, 2014 at 1:27 p.m.

Overall,

It needs some serious improvement if the FGC as a whole will be ok with this. It feels like that European tournament all over again where they kept calling Dieminion "EMP."

It just felt like a soulless production with fake hype, cheesy production, and bad commentary by the non-FGC commentator. He had no clue what was happening on the screen. Not to mention the stream itself had early Bifuteki days stream quality.

The only saving grace are the competitors themselves.

Overall stream rating:
Stream: B-/C+
Commentary: Despite Gootecks' best efforts B-/C+
Quality of play: A
Overall: B/B-

Room for improvement.

I laugh at people saying they should bring in spooky, he my be the hardest working man in the fgc. But his streams lack production value and camera work. Level up series has far exceeded spooky in terms of pre production\production value. Theirs a reason spooky is manly an fgc streamer and level up has been doing different events including big dota2\esports events.

This event has very good production value, better than anything that the fgc has to offer so far.

Sage_Liebert said on January 27, 2014 at 1:35 p.m.

#37
diehilde said on January 27, 2014 at 1:39 p.m.

Nice event! Tasteless doesnt really work well as a SF commentator though. No need to blame him though, he is an excellent commentator nonetheless, his style just doesnt work too well with SF. He is at his best when talking off-topic stuff but contrary to starcraft, SF games dont have much downtime so basically all he has left is his play-by-play commentary which is fine, but doesnt really cut it on its own.

Reading this, you do have a very valid point. I think the opinion of the monsters affected me a bit.

FGC blending with the E-Sports community. That'll be something to see especially since some FGC members are pretty good at games that are labeled "E-Sports" and vice versa. The merge is upon us!

#43
ForTheViolence said on January 27, 2014 at 1:46 p.m.

what world do you live in where criticism is a sin? No one here is being harsh, they are pointing real problems with the production. The commentator that wasn't gootecks was clueless, production was professional but overall cheesy and boring. audio levels were very poorly configured, frame rate and bitrate was awful for such a high production event. The concept is cool, but overall poorly executed and broadcasted.

#44
Jason said on January 27, 2014 at 1:47 p.m.

Three recommendations
1) Get rid of the fake crowd shots/stock cheering sound
2) Change the sets to ft10 if you're just going to show a single set per day
3) Teach Tasteless how to play/commentate Streetfighter

#45
TagAnarchy said on January 27, 2014 at 1:50 p.m.

More likely than not, as this goes on Tasteless will pick up on SF commentating. Cut him some slack. Nobody starts out Godlike at commentating. It just takes some work and practice.

#46
ShinzoBishamon said on January 27, 2014 at 1:50 p.m.

I never said criticism is a sin, just that people need to cool it b/c for some weird reason in this community the line blurs and peoples criticism just becomes blind hate of it.

#47
Devrae said on January 27, 2014 at 2:02 p.m.

#3

Better off getting adding one more of the players to commentate instead. Maybe Ryan Hart since he seems to have a more professional attitude.

There is probably a reason ESGN wanted Tasteless to commentate? ESGN payroll? Who knows? Its probably cheaper to have him then pay $3K+ for UltraChen. Hopefully, next time they will learn and improve.

#48
SnakeX said on January 27, 2014 at 2:20 p.m.

I don't have a problem with Tasteless commentating. Would it have been better with someone else instead? Absolutely. However this is ESGN's event, and if they want to have one of their own guys there for familiarity purposes, then that is their call and it's not really a problem.

Besides, he may have been largely unfamiliar with top level play but it wasn't like he was completely clueless out there too. Some of you guys need to relax and not be so critical just because you don't get to see UltraChen all the time.

#49
brenttiscool said on January 27, 2014 at 2:31 p.m.

I just don't like that instead of Gootecks commentating on the match, he's pretty much explaining to Tasteless the definition of every thing.

It kind of is a problem because the commentary is so unnatural and out of place that it's very distracting from the gameplay.

Skisonic is a pretty bad commentator for example but he at least knows the games in a general sense and doesn't seem completely out of place casting. Tasteless is so awkward that I'm more drawn to the show because of how comically ignorant and out of place he is instead of the top notch players drawing me in. That shouldn't be happening. He is objectively having a negative impact on the show.

This isn't a slight towards him. He's a fine caster when he knows the game he's casting, but he just objectively doesn't fit here.

#54
Memanruler said on January 27, 2014 at 3:11 p.m.

I haven't watched the stream, but judging by the comments, it seems Tasteless wasn't doing the best at casting for SF. But I find that fine, this event is more about putting the FGC's name out there rather then being a FGC catering event. It's good to have someone who's new to this, so people who are also watching can learn along with him.

battlesong said on January 27, 2014 at 3:27 p.m.

I don't think the selection of players is bad at all.....but it could be better. Seriously, how DID they choose which players could attend? I would've assumed a player like Daigo would get an invite to a big event like this.

#56
ShinzoBishamon said on January 27, 2014 at 3:42 p.m.

I think player selection was random

#57
SelamatPagi said on January 27, 2014 at 3:49 p.m.

Nah. If you think about it, Daigo and Sako would be awkward and slightly boring to watch. There's a reason why they've brought out people like Mike Ross and F Champ. They want personalities who can be entertaining off camera as well as on. On that note, I'm glad they brought in Infiltration and Tokido.

#58
mercurian said on January 27, 2014 at 3:52 p.m.

I wish they had brought in Mago-san.

#59
liquidfkinfire said on January 27, 2014 at 4:06 p.m.

I think this is a good esports event. As a break from the usual fgc event, I like that people are trying some thing different. The format is weird, mostly cause they call it a tournament, but its different and fits well with their 'storyline' presentation. They're trying to show players as personalities, not just dudes with joysticks.

I just think its funny they tried to use a known starcraft caster comment on a fighting game. Atleast they paired him with a real fgc person. Still should have went with top tier Ultra/Chen ftw.

From my perspective, I believe that they are trying to draw a new audience to watch this show. Therefore if you have a somewhat clueless comementator he can make remarks to gootecks who can (in a simplistic manner) explain the situation. It's dumbed down commentary for is but not for the general player who may try his hand at street fighter after watching this.

If you think fighting games are confusing button mashers, make sure you just explain them frame traps, OS, baits, fadc, plinks, safe jumps, unblockables, and every peice of frame data. Cause that won't give any new player a headache.

Ultra hen are amazing for the hardcore sf community, my fav as well (& zhi), but I think they made an intelligent cal if they are trying to bring in new players. Explaining just what you new to know to not say, I have no clue what's ping on here w super meter/ punishes etc.

#67
Gotomaster said on January 27, 2014 at 5:14 p.m.

Next ESGN should have Justin, Dieminion, ChrisG, Daigo, Gamerbee, Sako, Gackt, Latif

#68
BunnyBoy said on January 27, 2014 at 5:20 p.m.

The commentary could be better, sure, but it still makes me happy to see a great group of Street Fighter players competing for up to $25,000 in prizes. That's quite a bit of money for FGC players to make.

#69

Maybe this time he did his research since you can't give out wrong info if they want to be like espn.

#74
AdamBomb said on January 27, 2014 at 6:19 p.m.

To those of you saying that Tasteless has absolutely no idea what's going on, you're wrong, at least partially. He's actually been on stream on CafeID many times and plays Blanka at a decent level. He's not the most knowledgeable out there for sure, but he does have some idea at least.

I would also like to ask you guys to please continue to watch. I feel that many times in the past, whenever eSports would try to break into the FGC, we would tear them apart for mistakes, to the point where they didn't want to come back. Sure, this does have quite a few problems but it is also getting a lot right. So give it a chance, support it, and continue to give feedback so that we can see more support and growth for the scene and people involved.

#94
Drfunk said on January 28, 2014 at 1:21 p.m.

Can people sitting out still be able to win 25k? Or do they need to win 7 in a row? Last match said a bump of $150, seems low towards reaching the max prize money with only 5 more to go. What happens if a player decides to take his money and run? Pot reset to 0?

Anyways, great set of matches. Champ's been out of SF a bit too long it took him almost 5 games before he started adapting to Xian and it was far too late by then. Also, anyone on there would have re-spun the wheel on Infiltration/Tokido/Xian/Ryan Hart to an extent. Not sure why stream monsters were trolling Xian for playing smart and not face an elite opponent early on.

#95
Erawan said on January 28, 2014 at 1:21 p.m.

More hype than Evo? Hold your horses buddy, I think you may be alone on that point.

I was trying to be optimistic here! See why we cant grow any bigger? FGC stagnated growth not good for future you see. Just imagine if 99% was optimistic. We would outgrow LoL and Dota 2 :(

Having negativity not good :D! Just be optimistic and say! Hey what a great show. FGC grows.

But you guys say. Show sucks. FGC wont grow. GG WP GUYS.
