Defend the Casuals aka NLBC and friends.

This is supposed to be New York's first major? I'm afraid not, cuz the Daigo-kumite at NYU last spring had the same level of competition so it must also be a major Kappa

#16
tridentseven said on January 11, 2014 at 10:28 p.m.

Defend the North is much bigger then Spring Fighter in terms of the amount of players and games. THere were only about 60 people that entered AE in Spring Fighter where as there were probably about 150 at Defend the North for AE. Overall amount of people and the size of the venue is several times larger then Spring Fighter.

#17
r0my5 said on January 11, 2014 at 10:31 p.m.

It's just a glorified NLBC. Calling your own tournament a major does not make it so

#18
vanekpi said on January 11, 2014 at 10:36 p.m.

Actually about 250 for AE. Less than 100 people preregistered. And having hundreds more show up to register in the morning delayed the tournament. 8 pools of 32 people was not fun.

#19
ATMfasho said on January 11, 2014 at 10:40 p.m.

Was there no brackets on challonge?

#20
cliffeside said on January 11, 2014 at 11:48 p.m.

AE had 256 players, marvel had 128, and the others had less than 50. seems like solid major numbers to me. especially for a first time. my only complaint was how the brackets worked out. so many strong players got thrown into the same pool and then you'd have these pools just filled with scrubs and like 1-2 strong players. i found that to be really weird that the strong players weren't spread out more evenly but eh. w.e.

it really brought out a lot of new york players, but it did kinda suck that not many people from other places showed up. a lot of people who said they were gonna come just straight up didn't show up. veloc1raptor, sherry, CJ showstopper, some guys from the UK, happy medicine, sonyono were pretty much the only non east coast players.

the staff made it enjoyable though. DTN was one of the better tournaments i've been to for sure. granted it started 2 hours late, it went smooth as butter from there.

#22
rudiano said on January 12, 2014 at 1:42 a.m.

lol fact remains this is not a major. Doesnt feel like one anyways and you'd expect the majority of USA's best players to attend to it if it were one, but most were absent

BlackMasamune said on January 12, 2014 at 5:38 a.m.

What's your definition of a major? All majors have to start somewhere, and it is not fair to compare the 1st one to others that have been running for years.

And even if it is smaller than most, it's the only one New York has, and technically qualifies.

#25
Smorgasboard said on January 12, 2014 at 6:01 a.m.

I think a major tournament should be attended by the majority. This tournament is a major new York tournament and maybe a major East coast tournament but it is no major US tournament. So, which major do people usually refer to? NY, EC or US?

SgtKonus said on January 12, 2014 at 8:50 a.m.

I think we need to have a discussion as a scene on pre-registration because that is what made DTN run so late(or the lack of it mind you). I was there and the onsite registration line was huge, making brackets for the at least 300 people who showed up late really held up the event and that may not be what is best for this scene. Pre-registration tournaments may be the future (Doesn't EVO operate like that?)

#33
EMP_TriForce_GM said on January 12, 2014 at 9:08 a.m.

Hahaha.. guys giving their opinions on what is or is not a major. Yet tournament names with "Regional" in it are called majors and have very little attendance from other regions of the country but the scene says its a major. smh* This community makes my morning tea and crumpets enjoyable.

Just because something is old it doesn't mean it's less enjoyable to watch.

Personally I enjoy watching KI, I watched KI earlier today actually, but if both are on at the same time, AE wins every time for me.

#46
hairywigwam said on January 12, 2014 at 12:32 p.m.

So because the word regional is in the title, SoCal Regional's isn't a major? A major should have all the top players attending, with a few international players if possible. I think the term major gets thrown around too lightly, but you basically picked the worst example to make your argument. But I'm happy the community makes your morning Poptarts enjoyable.

KwRIOT said on January 12, 2014 at 12:45 p.m.

Major, regional, local, Team PIE's one-time play session with 400 of their closest buddies. Call it what you will. The fact remains it's a first time tournament that drew in respectable numbers.

#48
EMP_FecalMatter said on January 12, 2014 at 12:53 p.m.

i respect your opinion since we're all entitled to having one, however i feel it is a shame how EVERY new game has to struggle to attract viewers while the games that are on top remain on top.

In this case, i feel it is a shame that someone would pick AE POOLs over top 8 of KI. of course if one doesnt enjoy the new game no problem and stick to what you enjoy the most... but if the game you enjoy and the new game that you're interested in is on at the same time, i would encourage people to support the new game.

its so sad to see Capcom trolls (im a capcom player btw)/ stuck up elitists come onto streams just to bash on the new game just because it doesnt play like their game of choice. sometimes i question if we really are a "Community" or not... :/

#49
nusense said on January 12, 2014 at 12:55 p.m.

#52
KwRIOT said on January 12, 2014 at 1:02 p.m.

I honestly do not think we are a community.

We like to say we're a "Fighting Games" fan, when more often than not, we're a "Street Fighter" fan, a "Capcom" fan, an "airdasher" fan, etc.

If it's not a franchise we're already familiar with, it struggles to gain acceptance into the "FGC".

#53
TorTorVega said on January 12, 2014 at 1:08 p.m.

I more or less agree with you. I know how frustrating the trolling from other games' fans can be. It annoys me with games I don't even play. I say give the games a chance.

The problem isn't just the fans that don't give new games a chance. Tournaments are just set up to not support new games adequately. It's not the tournament's fault entirely either, I mean you're not going to have super skilled commentators on the mic with a newer game, but newer games seem to feel so lifeless on stream. Commentators sound bored, they're on at inconvenient times, etc.

The only two fighting games that I actually enjoy watching at the moment are AE and KI. If I didn't wake up super early today I'd have completely missed KI. :/

Again, call it what you will.

You think numbers are irrelevant? Where do you think the cash prizes come from? Not taking into account any pot bonuses, which has the larger payout: A 1000 person Major or a 1000 person Local?

Knowing these numbers, maybe more top players will attend next time.

Impressive win from a character who never wins SF tournaments, but is this really a Major when nobody from the West Coast, Japan, or Europe were there?

DevilMaySpy said on January 12, 2014 at 1:25 p.m.

Who the f*** cares whether or not it's labeled Major or Regional? Vega just won a 230 man tournament, GET HYPE!

#59
spotlesseden said on January 12, 2014 at 1:25 p.m.

some tournament have 12 players 10k first place payout with all top players. Not scrub major that above average vega made it to the GF. Above average players will never make it to GF in real major like Canada Cup, shawdoloo showdown.

Edit: I guess he won. Lets just said he won a 200 players tournament.

VEGA!!!!!!
I can't believe Claw had to do like 10 combo's 3 air throws 2 ground throws to win a round when cammy just did like 3 combos and won round's in like 2 seconds...getting dizzys left and right she really is a powerful character..alot of credit to Zeus he really had to work hard to take her down...that commentator was acting like he was Proffessor X the whole time like he could read the minds of the fighters real annoying ....great fight overall love this game

According to DTN facebook official page

https://www.facebook.com/events/41761...

It is clearly stated as " Defend The North (NYC FGC Major Tournament)"

So it is a major, not regional.

spotlesseden said on January 12, 2014 at 3:18 p.m.

According gameing99, all you have to do just make a facebook page to call your tournament a major, then it's a major. You don't need to invite top players.

^ flocker came to this event though , if he is not a top player who has won EVO , then I don't know what it is.

#72
spotlesseden said on January 12, 2014 at 3:40 p.m.

he is in that region. F.champ won evo couple years ago he went to many California and Seattle tournaments, we don't call that major.

rudiano said on January 12, 2014 at 3:48 p.m.

Hate to say it but at this point watching any of Chris's matches in Marvel is the equivalent of taking a piss break during a Divas match now. Blame the team really as he probably wouldn't win as many Majors without it (though he still is a monster which that i can't take away from him)

Just goes to show that most of the time you can't blame sucking on the character

Any character can win a major if you're good and lucky enough

Stef_Science said on January 12, 2014 at 8:44 p.m.

AE top 8 sure looked like a Next level top 8 to me, that an 80% of the people at the tournament had EMP in front of their name. My god what would Triforce do if he had to actually pay all of those players or do anything for them except take credit for their wins? My guess is he would have to cut his roster down to under 10,000 players.

Let me create an official event page for a "major" tournament I'm organising in my basement.

#97
EnsignHiro said on January 12, 2014 at 9:39 p.m.

Alright cool is it invitation based or no?

#98
IareBeStayDrunk said on January 12, 2014 at 9:46 p.m.

idk. Its hard to look at the top 8, then top 16 of AE and feel like this is a "major". top 8, yes. then youd expect to see more people you can put faces to in top 16 but I dont. like if I had to pick a top 8, top 8 would be the ones I would have chosen... wouldnt have zeus winning so credit to him there.

Wasnt impressed with much of anything this tournament.

Then again, I am an ass player/Stream Monster/local goer and not so much a tournament player.

RG|Rico Suave is so GdlK at Injustice n KI! He's awesome to watch. Miss seeing him kick ass in AE but still good to see him holding it down in Injustice. I hope he attends EVO this year for all these games, he'll win Injustice for sure.

Does anyone know if ChrisG played Injustice here? Killing it in AE, KoF n Marvel is a feat (making top 8s there).

Great tourney guys.
