'I almost had a heart attack!' - video game music band missingNO performs MvC2 Carnival theme at MAGfest

'I almost had a heart attack!' - video game music band missingNO performs MvC2 Carnival theme at MAGfest MAGfest is a large music / gaming festival that had it's twelfth event take place this past weekend. The gathering consists of various panels, and has live bands perform on multiple stages.

One of the bands on the docket this past weekend was an up-and-coming group called missingNO. They are a seven member ensemble that has heavy Jazz influences.

Considering their Jazz background, what better music is there to perform than tracks from the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 series? Well, that's exactly what they did. Early on into their set, missingNO performed the Carnival stage theme from MvC2.

They go on to perform other familiar, non-fighting game related tracks, such as Donkey Kong Country 2's Stickerbush Symphony, (although that was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl), and Super Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road theme.

Hit the jump to check out the video, and click the time stamp link to jump right to the MvC2 theme performance.

You can find the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Carnival theme at around 00:23:45 in the video.

If you close your eyes and listen, you can almost hear Storms yell and screams.

I like the soundtrack.

I hate it for a fighting game.

Or at least a fighting game with such an unsupportive all-over-the-place-mish-mash-crossover-throw-crap-at-the-wall-it's-all-going-to-stick-anyway aesthetic as Marvel 2.

That said, I would've been more than happy to yell out IT"S MAHVEL, BABY if I were there in person once the Carnival theme hit.

Marvel 2's graphical design is all over the place, from the character sprites being *literally* years apart in quality, to the backgrounds being 3-D and all over the place from the Carnival to the Clocktower to Abyss' Cave to the Chinese Shrine-area. And then they threw in environmentally wrecked variants to tie into the loose Abyss-related storyline. This is to say nothing of the contrasting character styles themselves which was squarely a hallmark of the series (Capcom's anime-cartoonish designs vs. Marvel's comic book musculature); and it's also to say nothing that the musical choice was a HUGE departure from Capcom's regular musical M.O. for the Vs. Series.

With all that working against the aesthetic, the jazz soundtrack, which is largely good by itself, fell flat in practice. The idea that it would be soothing or appreciated when put over all the craziness of the gameplay was weak.

An example of the aesthetic working for the music would be Skullgirls. Lots of jazz-influence int he music, and it compliments the overall design.

Granted that SG has a singular idea while Marvel 2 was a crossover, but that just reinforces that Capcom would've been better served to stick to what was proven to work with more synth-based themes, even if they couldn't possibly come up with or fit themes for all 56 characters.

That's it. All IMO of course.

Marvel players wouldn't even recognize the track, since they been using bootleg custom soundtrack MvC2 DC discs for years.
