Ram horns, Easter Island heads and more: Clips show Skullgirls' references to Battletoads, Gradius, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and numerous other titles

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • February 16, 2014 at 12:52 p.m. PST

If you've played Skullgirls, you've probably noticed a number of references to video games of the past, like Battletoads, Gradius, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Guilty Gear and more, but unless you're a hardcore fan, there's probably a few homages you missed.

Attempting to highlight a good portion of these, SoulInkyuubator put together a couple of videos showcasing the references he was able to track down, although there's quite a few more out there in the wild, though.

Some of these might be a bit of a stretch, but if you enjoy seeing allusions to other games, you'll like this. Hit the jump to see both videos.

Videos from SoulInkyuubator. Tip from Blackoshinomi.

References from other games arent gonna save your game. Focus on fresh material and not copycat and playing around and maybe you wouldn't need 50+ updates in one month :P

At the Double super where double transforms in various characters i thought they were going to show Spiral's super from X-menCOTA or from MvsC2

I wanna see one for the colors. Some of them look familiar but i cant put my finger on who it could be.

BlackRain said on February 16, 2014 at 1:11 p.m.

The fresh material is exactly what is causing the updates. But why do I even try to explain, you don’t even play the game, do you?

Nice videos by the way, I still find some stuff here and there after playing the game for 2 years now. The references from the alternative colors to other characters alone is simply amazing, so are the puns spoken from the characters themselves. Sometimes I think Dreamking had his hands in the development of the voice scripts ;D

Wasn't it released in April 2012?

Just play Skullgirls, boys. Nobody will look down on you and you won't grow woman parts, I promise.

Voidstar said on February 16, 2014 at 1:22 p.m.

Most of these are pretty obvious and/or have been pointed out by the devs themselves. I also don't see why it takes 30 seconds to show the referenced material - videos need more editing.

The references and in-jokes are some of my favorite things about the game. For color palettes, see here:

And @shinra358 #1: Hyperbole just makes your trolling more obvious.

Big Band is coming soon (March?), and will have an awesome palette that matches your avatar. :D

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure reference for Peacock is probably the best one.

Trolling Skullgirls fans is like shooting fish in a barrel, except the fish all line up in a row and ask to be shot.

In all honesty, Capcom and many if not all the fighting game creators have copied each other so you have no argument to contend with. There is nothing new under the sun. Easter eggs have always been in games and they are pretty cool. They pay homage to the past that WE ALL as gamers reverence and love so stop spewing reckless and idiotic hatred for a game you don't even play.

#12
NumeroGaijin said on February 16, 2014 at 1:44 p.m.

You Sir are whining like a little brat. They gave us more than one character.....they just aren't playable to the public yet. It takes time to battle legal issues and hand draw sprites. The creators put heart and soul into this game for us and even if we don't like it the least we could honestly do is applaud their effort and applaud the fact that they have implemented in fighting games what NO other fighting game has implemented. ALL fighting games creators will be soon be copying off of them in the future in terms of features and most those that spew hate right now will praise xxx company for doing the same thing.

Looks like someone isn't paying attention to the game at all.
Like someone had previously stated, the updates are due to the feedback they get from the fans about what to fix/improve. That's keeping the game pretty fresh if you ask me

Hey wait, aren't you that guy from the Skullgirls steam group that was creating pointless and cancerous threads and spouting nonsense about the DLC chars not being free?

#14
Eye_of_Orochi said on February 16, 2014 at 2:05 p.m.

Note to developers: please don't change the vibe of the game and characters to try to appeal to haters that don't even own the game.

You already rigged the contest for Beowulf to win just to silence the manly men who need to have a manly man character present to even think about getting the game (but they still won't). They gave people that donated $1 way too much weight in the voting over people who obviously love the game and donated hundreds. And the rules suddenly changed for the second round of voting? Hmm suspicious!

How did i know this story would produce a argument!

I sent in a few slow news day story to eventhubs hope you guy don't start a argument over those story's .

#16
FalsoL said on February 16, 2014 at 2:37 p.m.

This is the reason why people think that eventhubs is a trolls nest. When I see your posts you are always criticizing all games. I wonder what kind of games do you play. It must be really cool.

Who cares about Minette!?
Stanley didn't get in!

#27
Eye_of_Orochi said on February 17, 2014 at 2:13 a.m.

Minette....one of the last characters I wanted design wise and gameplay wise. Try again.

Fanboy....the word that gets thrown around when you have no real argument.

mag44 said on February 17, 2014 at 9:14 a.m.

"Fanboy....the word that gets thrown around when you have no real argument."

That's rich, coming from a fool who UNIRONICALLY believes the vote was rigged because someone he didn't like won.

christ where does it end with you people?...

#29
caruga said on February 17, 2014 at 10:27 a.m.

Seems you didn't bother to read the post he was replying to.

#30
Eye_of_Orochi said on February 17, 2014 at 10:42 a.m.

I believe it was rigged because I believe it was rigged, not because of who won. I don't care about Beowulf love or hate, I just hate the fishiness and the bandwagoning that went behind his victory.

Where does it end with you people? Says the guy who still has no proper retort outside of name calling (yet gets mad that I said he had no argument), probably doesn't give a **** about this game (yet comes in to talk **** like a troll), and ignores what I said about Minette to avoid looking dumb about being presumptuous before.

Where does it end with YOU people who think they are above everyone that don't adhere to the same opinions and look down on others just for liking who they like (calling Minette moe shed your true colors on that front)?

#31
ZERO7360 said on February 17, 2014 at 10:45 a.m.

Nah I think he read and replied to the right comment. That comment sounded like he was agreeing/adding on to the first one.

Eye_of_Orochi said on February 17, 2014 at 10:59 a.m.

And before everything else is ignored just to nitpick one loophole, let me close it up. Saying people are manly men and needed a manly man character wasn't an insult. It was emphasizing how badly those dollar voters:

1.) wanted the girl characters to lose, just based on principle
2.) made themselves extremely vocal so everyone on their side knew to vote Beowulf and not split up their votes amongst other male characters, even slamming Stanley and Panzerfaust to take attention off of them
3.) picked a character that fits the vibe of a Skullgirls character the least of almost any character presented
4.) constantly insulted those who actually like the Skullgirls females with words like waifu, moe, pervert, etc. only emphasizing how this became a gender war to them

I fully understand the type of characters the dominate portion of the FGC prefer and I fully accept that. It would be silly and rather difficult not to, really. It was this situation with Beowulf in which they took it too far, to the point where I feel they voted him in just to spite Skullgirls and the small player base actually supporting it.

mag44 said on February 17, 2014 at 6:17 p.m.

... yes i don't give two sh!ts for the game.. Which is why I want it's roster and scene to grow?... Which is why I constantly lament the fact the game is practically CURSED production and releasewise? All of your complaints just come off as (and ARE) whining and conspiracy theory making. You speak of me not giving out proper retorts yet you've yet to make an argument that isn't, you know, batsh!t insane.

I wanted Brain Drain and Anne to win, yet neither of them didn't. Do you see me b!tching and whining and acting like I'm entitled to have my character in? It's pretty obvious there will be more votes in the future (considering how successful the first one was), so the characters you want will get in eventually, you just have to learn how to be patient (a virtue that unfortunately seems to be lost upon the FGC).

TLDR version:

Your favorite character didn't win. The character you didn't like got in fair and square. Get over it.

TheGuardian07 said on February 17, 2014 at 9:16 p.m.

Are all of those confirmed? I would've thought green Double was referencing Abyss 2 from MvC2.

#35
ZERO7360 said on February 18, 2014 at 7:14 a.m.

Honestly, I'd rather the devs choose the characters that they want to add instead of leaving it to the fans, considering the amount of BS and drama that ensued. I feel that it would be easier and safer that way. But hey, that's just me.

#36
MarthFE said on February 19, 2014 at 12:11 p.m.

1000 times more effort went into this game and it's 1000 times better than a piece of crap like divekick. All that "game" is is a reference with a button. Skullgirls is actually a game, and a food one at that. Divekick is like something you'd get out of a cereal box...

Chaos15 said on February 21, 2014 at 11:48 p.m.

This so much this. Maybe that way we could finally had Umbrella.
Also why the heck was Aeon part of the voting if Mike himself didn't want her in the game in the first place?
