Early entrance numbers for SoCal Regionals 2014 by game - SSF4 AE v2012, UMvC3, Smash, BlazBlue and more

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • February 10, 2014 at 8:49 p.m. PST

We checked with Level|Up to find out what the early registration numbers are for the SoCal Regionals 2014, by game. With 20 titles in the lineup, we thought it'd be interesting to see which games have attracted the most players so far.

Also, an influx of users is expected to flood in a week before registration ends, on February 23, so it's highly advised that you sign up now, or risk not being able to compete in the games you wish to play — as registration is capped.

The caps for SSF4 AE v2012, UMvC3 and SSBM are 256 players. KoF13, BBCP and soon Injustice will be capped at 128, so if you're interested in signing up for any of these games, you should hit the SoCal Regionals website before the brackets fill up.

Hit the jump to see the breakdown.

Most people register at the last minute, I'm sure most of these games will have twice the amount by then.

Shouldn't everyone sign up for divekick? It has a 5 second learning curve.

Also, let's see more SFxT players.

Good job Injustice players! (and BBCP players, very impressive.)

More people need to sign up for MK9 though.

Anime game at 3rd 0-0

Had a feeling that VF would be dead last before I saw the list sadly.

Im suprised Sfxt with those numbers and Melee 36 only i'm guessing they register very late.

Rahavic said on February 11, 2014 at 12:07 a.m.

Thats like Connect 4 having more entrants than Chess. Very sad.

#17
ReddChief said on February 11, 2014 at 1:13 a.m.

Nah more like connect 4 having more entrants than checkers i'm surprise they both actually pulled in that many.

#18
daisetsu said on February 11, 2014 at 1:22 a.m.

For a "dead" game, SFxT sure seems looking alive and well with entrants even closer to the "international" game KOFXIII. TTT2 freaking lower than divekick - that just solidifies why its not on EVO this year. Its lingering among the dead games in a location where the scene should be one of the strongest.

#19
Emp_Disruptah said on February 11, 2014 at 1:38 a.m.

I would laugh so much if KI reached its cap before Injustice and BB!

But anyway, the numbers seem healthy for the game, regardless of reaching the cap or not.

#20
AugustAPC said on February 11, 2014 at 2:05 a.m.

Why are people laughing that KI has a good attendance? It's a great game. Also, Divekick having higher turnouts than other games doesn't really mean much. It's the easiest fighter out there (not a negative thing), so a lot of people probably enter it for fun.

I'm curious to see if Marvel will hit its cap. A lot of rumors about that game slowing down a little. Gundam had me raising an eyebrow. I know nothing about that game. Is it a competitive fighter? Not a big fan of anime, but if there's a good fighter where I can play as giant robots, I'm down.

Anyway, wish I could watch all these games. Can't wait for the tourny.

KwRIOT said on February 11, 2014 at 2:05 a.m.

Tekken players obviously showing why their game should be included at EVO.

Dive Kick has more entrants than all the 3D fighters...

... and that is why there are no 3D fighters in EVO 2014's line-up

#26
daisetsu said on February 11, 2014 at 5:26 a.m.

thats bad? then consider Melee and KOFXIII terrible as well since there's only 1 or 2 difference to the number of SFxT players. and Melee and KOFXIII are still in EVO.

what im impressed about is even if the players are probably from sf4, its amazing that it still edged out alot of games considering its not featured in WNF/TRB. what more if it was?

I still consider it dead. But if that's what you call dead, then what does that make TTT or DOA5U? zombie? since its still featured on WNF from time to time.

what the hell. seriously what happened to the players of 3D games. i cant believe it has come to this.

#27
deus said on February 11, 2014 at 5:38 a.m.

3D fighting games are great but I'm more keen on Injustice n SFxT than a 3D fighter.

Actually, I prefer 3S the most n just wished more people were into Melty Blood n other PS2 / PC fighting games that are technically good n a lot of fun.

On topic, it's great to see SF4 still thriving in tournaments. Personally, I wouldn't would rather compete in other fighting game events than SF4 since Ultra is coming out soon n winning an SF4 tourney from now until the update IMO doesn't mean SO much.

Are people just looking for a reason to bag on 3D fighters now?
The difference in number between Tekken and KOF is 7, and its only 8 short from Melee.
Of course the game is not gonna get SFAE numbers since its the hardest game on the list (besides VF).
Its still stupid that there wont be a 3D game at Evo, but you guys go ahead and have a circle jerk about how Kof has 7 more entrants and that we dont deserve a spot.

#31
JIHADJOE said on February 11, 2014 at 7:07 a.m.

VF5 numbers have me confused.
First off, it's sad that only 13 people are entered for VF5.
OTOH, HOLY CRAP THERE ARE 13 PEOPLE PLAYING VF5??? YOOOOO!

Except that's a terrible analogy, since KI actually has depth.

Your comment is ignorant at best, plain stupid at worst. There have been plenty of good 3D games.
Here's a tip, if you dont understand something, its not automatically bad. Also, try not to bag on stuff you dont understand, it makes you look like an idiot

#38
Shiranui said on February 11, 2014 at 7:48 a.m.

Those SFxT numbers will definitely be a bit higher for the event! I know a good handful of individuals that haven't registered yet.

As a matter of fact, both Melee and KI have depth.

And seriously? You're surprised Smash tends to get a noticeable amount of entrants?

#41
Sasuga said on February 11, 2014 at 8:02 a.m.

I'm sorry guys. I signed up for VF5 13 times.

#42
Dart2623 said on February 11, 2014 at 8:05 a.m.

Not surprised about Smash Bros entrants. They need to make sure they got their parent's support (money) before signing up, otherwise they would be taking money from the rent they pay to their parents for living in the basement. They also need to coordinate who is gonna take them to the event and who is gonna pick them up, could be mom or dad but they still need to plan that and cant just sign right away for any event..... And for those who don't get a sarcastic and trolling joke, this is a joke.

SFXT will always have good number because pro players love that game. Those people will always enter it.

#45
Emp_Disruptah said on February 11, 2014 at 8:32 a.m.

Just to make things a bit more clear, when I said I would laugh if KI reached its cap, I meant that as a good thing. KI is my favorite fighting game right now, and I'm happy to see that the numbers seem healthy despite the fact that it is a XBone exclusive.

#46
xShonuffx said on February 11, 2014 at 8:35 a.m.

Hmm I think the problem is peoples unwillingness to try something different. Everyone has this stigma that a fighting game has to have 2 player, 2 health bars, a ton of characters and special moves and some pseudo jargon like footsies and option selects just to call it a fighter. If 3D fighters are going to grow, they need to get beyond the tekken/virtua fighter style format and really take advantage of a 3D arena.

#47
Xykes said on February 11, 2014 at 8:46 a.m.

Yup, I'm one of those...

#48
Deen said on February 11, 2014 at 8:50 a.m.

Its funny how people compare game life and community based on """ E A R L Y """" registration numbers. SMH god.

#49
Deen said on February 11, 2014 at 9:06 a.m.

Hey, I can do that too,

Melee is a kids game, hardly considered a fighter
Blazblu is a rehash of guilty gear
Sfxt is good but not allot of people play it so why bother learning it, same with kof
Mvc series a mess
And sf4 or sf2 in fact used the concepts of supers and other technical gimmicks from snk games whose well before it.

What makes a strong community just happens by chance, sf in general was just more popular to begin with, and even though there were better games out there, it just picked up traction because people were already on it.

Hey, Killer Instinct has 45? That's great! So far, that's the highest registered number for a KI tournament! The scene is growing :)

#52
DeePhenom said on February 11, 2014 at 10:50 a.m.

Its not dead, its just a hard game to play. Divekicks is very very simple and easy to play.

#53
dorayaki said on February 11, 2014 at 11:22 a.m.

#55
Krisp said on February 11, 2014 at 1:46 p.m.

Yeah, smashers notorious for procrastinating on pre reg but when SoCal and NorCal locals are 80+ this is pretty sad

#56
tidestick said on February 11, 2014 at 3:42 p.m.

20 fighting games! Holy shet that's alot of fighters. Out of all of those I play only 4. Have 7 of those games. Few I still wanna check out and play. But I don't have time for all that. I really just play 1.

#57
FlexingBum said on February 11, 2014 at 4:11 p.m.

So being inspired by another franchise is a bad thing? I dont really know anything about DOA, but i'm sure it takes a hell of a lot more dedication than a game like Marvel. And TTT2 is very similar to Tekken 6, but is that a bad thing? No, because Tekken 6 is a great game.
By that logic AE and USF4 are both garbage because the original SF4 came out in 2008.

#58
NoizyChild said on February 11, 2014 at 4:13 p.m.

BBCP pulling in some strong numbers there. Always wanted to get into that game, but the execution requirements are a bit ridiculous.

On the other hand, when ST is getting more entrants than over half the lineup, that's a problem with those communities. (Not counting Gundamn and Divekick, of course.)

And LAWL at that VF comment. Gold.

#59
BunnyBoy said on February 11, 2014 at 11:49 p.m.

VF5 is only 5 entrants behind Soul Calibur, 8 behind DOA 5, and 15 behind Tekken Tag.

It seems that 3D fighters in general aren't popular here.

#60
FakeSypha said on February 12, 2014 at 8:34 a.m.

So much cliche in that comment... it hurts.

#61
brisal73 said on February 12, 2014 at 1:25 p.m.

VF would have bigger numbers, but the people who were going are either now waiting for Sega Cup at Super Arcade in April or have to work on a Friday (that's me).

#62
NoizyChild said on February 15, 2014 at 11:26 p.m.

So that would bump it up to, say.....16?
