Updated: EVO 2014 game line up revealed; Kokonoe will be allowed after patch, would be banned if she remains as is

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • February 6, 2014 at 8:02 p.m. PST

Updated: The full EVO 2014 line up has been revealed. Hit the jump to check it out.

The official EVO 2014 line up is set to be announced tonight on IPlayWinner's The Fray! stream. Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar, co-founder of the EVO tournament series, will be on the joining in in order to reveal which games are going to be featured at this year's event in July.

As it stands right now, the only game confirmed to be on the EVO line up is Ultra Street Fighter 4, provided it gets the early June release it is currently scheduled for.

You can tune into the live stream to catch the news as it's revealed, or check back later tonight, as we'll have this story updated with the official list of games.

Hit the jump to check out the stream.

Official EVO 2014 game line up

• Ultra Street Fighter 4
• Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
• Injustice: Gods Among Us
• King of Fighters 13
• Killer Instinct
• Blazblue Chrono Phantasma
• Super Smash Bros. Melee (a spot is reserved for Melee but Nintendo must approve first. Discussions currently taking place)

Additional notes:

• Mr. Wizard stated that after EVO 2013, Tekken has dropped off a bit. With this year being the game's 20th anniversary, the EVO team didn't want to risk having a new version of Tekken be released, while an outdated version is on the game line up, so the franchise was omitted this year.

• Instead of having designated Road to EVO events, major tournaments with a certain amount of entrants will qualify for seeding points. Tournament organizers of majors events will have to submit results to the EVO team. Mr. Wizard mentioned that the system is still being worked out. These results will only apply for games on the EVO line up.

• This year is the 20th anniversary of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Tournament of Legends will be back this year, and EVO will also be holding the 3v3, single elimination tournament, X-Mania US, the national Super Turbo event from Japan.

• Exhibition matches aren't currently scheduled, but will be fit into the line up if they can get set up. Combo videos will return if the community makes them.

• If Kokonoe were to stay the way she is now in Blazblue Chrono Phantasma, she would be banned at EVO. She will be allowed however, as a patch to balance her is incoming.

• Developer panels will be returning this year.

• Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be 3 out of 5, as long as EVO doesn't have double the entrants as last year. Other games getting 3 out of 5 in top 8 will be dependent on how each game plays out.

• Bring Your Own Console will be back this year, and there will be designated areas for players who want to run side tournaments.

I saw SFxT not making it. As much as I like it, it was simply doomed from the baseless hate it got.

TTT2 isn't a surprise, either. Hardly anyone was playing it.

The Injustice community has been putting their game out there, whereas the Tekken community really hasn't been coming out for their game, or even supporting it.

#23
gohan16ken said on February 6, 2014 at 7:38 p.m.

No TTT2. No MK9. No DOA5U. No VF5FS. No SFxT. Wow. This is why developers need to stop focusing on tournament players. They lack loyalty. That is not wrong. They have to go to where the money is. This is there job. But both DOA5U and SFxTv2013 was created with tournament players in mind and the game is abandoned.

I am typing from a phone so I apologize for any errors.

Excited for ultra sf4 though and #FreeMelee!

#28
NoizyChild said on February 6, 2014 at 7:42 p.m.

It's not that they lack loyalty, it's just that the majority of those games just aren't very popular.

MK9 died when Injustice came out.

TTT2 is all but dead.

SFxT still gets entrants, but the DLC hate pretty much killed it. That, and the pros play boring as hell.

DoA never was popular.

VF doesn't even have a scene outside of Japan, and even then, only 2-3 big names really play it.

So Killer Instinct will be the new SFxT.
Glad to see it wasn't fully stripped like before. I just hope Melee will make it in the line up. Sucks to see P4A scrapped, but at least we're getting the revamped Blazblue. Looking forward to see how this holds up.

TTT2 is dead thanks to that free to play garbage.
MK9 was overrun by Injustice.
Sucks that VF5 wasn't there, but there isn't a huge audience for that game.
SFxT was doomed form the start and the play for it is nothing but footsies set ups, it's boring and repetitive to watch.

DOA5U abandoned? How? From what I'm gathering, 5U is doing more than ok in the minors and majors across the US territory. You need to check out more freestepdodge forums before throwing sh1t like that, man. Just sayin'.
The problem with EVO is... the same as always. The money that big publishers put to make their game show up. I'm looking at you M$ and Warner :)

For those that were hoping to see games like SFXT, TTT2, MK9, VF5FS etc. should really have less hopes for these games to even appear in EVO with plenty of reasons...

1. The EVO Tournament Organizers will decide which game goes to EVO on their own, meaning they have their own choices, & decisions. Which certain people that wanted to see their special games are very likely to be screwed or get the short end of the stick.

2. Another thing it takes is passionate communities themselves can increase chances of game to take its spot on EVO. (like SSB got its chance at EVO, after there was a voting poll for the sake of breast cancer. Which SSB has a very strong community.) If certain communities group don't offer enough support or got abandon for another game, those games have 0 chance to even appear in EVO. Even passionate communities isn't going to make a big difference when it comes to Tournament Organizers, which they do run EVO.

All it boils down to is don't get hopes too high, and hope for the best of organizers making the decision for *insert title* to even appear in EVO.

maxs2d2ace said on February 6, 2014 at 7:58 p.m.

Alright i hope melee makes it in. Also glad i don't see sf x tk in sight.

#44
TrueGamingGuru said on February 6, 2014 at 8:08 p.m.

Actually about the whole tournament player thing for DOA5U...

Part of what DOA5U has to offer has something to do having an equal balance for their game with the competitive players (or tournament players) and while maintaining the niche/casual audience at same time. So DOA5U wasn't always created just for Tournament Players alone, they're more of an all-around equal audience. just saying

PS. Part of the PS All-Stars Community is just going to grow for awhile, (not in the same level as SSB) and PS All-Stars is still too young to get a competitive scene since the first game isn't going to cut it. PS All-Stars is definitely going to need improvements in order to get its attention growing.

Otter_of_Death said on February 6, 2014 at 8:18 p.m.

I don't know why people are surprised by Tekken's absence. The entry numbers are incredibly weak at majors.

#47
NoizyChild said on February 6, 2014 at 8:22 p.m.

People need to stop saying this.

Nobody is bribing anybody to feature their games at EVO. The TOs have their picks, as well as gauging interest from tournament results.

Nobody is going to pass up featuring Killer Instinct, one of the hottest new games out right now, in favor of something like TTT2,a game where hardly anyone shows up for tourneys anymore.

They're not going to snub Injustice, a game whose fanbase has been supportive, even after the drop off in casuals, for a game like Virtua Fighter that's lucky to even have a top 8, if it's ever featured in the first place.

It's common sense, really.

#48
r0my5 said on February 6, 2014 at 8:23 p.m.

First time in the history of EVO no 3D fighters made it in I guess.

r0my5 said on February 6, 2014 at 8:28 p.m.

Oh and tekken franchise really needs to reinvent intself. They have gone far too long with the whole quantity over quality thing with the ridiculous amount of moves and characters. It's impossible to get new players into the series when learning the theory of the game takes more work than a college degree.

I disagree with UMvC3, Injustice and KOF being there.

UMvC3 has already pass its prime. The gameplay has become boring to even the most loyal fans. The game is not getting updated and the only reason it still has the numbers is because the players don't know how to play anything else. If anything, leaving their game out of EVO would wake the community up.

Injustice did terrible last year and has been struggling to recover ever since. Support for the game from NRS has stopped and now it's a side show at every tournament. I expect this game to be around until NRS releases their next game though but I hope it doesn't take up the spot for a more deserving game.

KOF is everyone's favourite game to watch at EVO. Especially the grand final. Ask them to name the top 8 of any other tournament or even the top 8 of EVO and most people would draw a blank. Just like Injustice, it's a sideshow at every other tournament except that is way more obscure. Putting it on evo supports the idea that entertainment is more important having active communities.

Another stupid seeding system again.

So if you have 100 average players in a tournament and no top player, you will get alot of seed point like some random Texas tournament.

IF your tournament that has 8 top players in the world, but only 32 people enter, you get little or no point.

OR tournament like topanga league means nothing.

#53
NoizyChild said on February 6, 2014 at 8:32 p.m.

Yes, let's leave Marvel, one of the two biggest games in the FGC, out of the biggest tournament in the FGC.

I'm surprised we're not seeing TTT2 or SFxT. BlazBlue is a welcome addition, though. It's been a while since we've had that series at Evo. Glad KI is on the roster, too. Hopefully the game will be relatively glitch-free with Spinal and Fulgore by the time Evo comes around.

Any way you slice it, though, it's going to suck. I enjoy watching every fighting game. I would have liked to see some more DoA action. I haven't gotten to see much of that game.

This year is the 20th anniversary of King of Fighters, Tekken, and Killer Instinct..... KoF, and KI are respresented, but it's a shame that Tekken will be missing out on the celebration. SSF2T also celebrates it's 20th anniversary this year, so it's appropriate that USFIV releases ths year.

#69
Cartpusher said on February 6, 2014 at 9:07 p.m.

Im sorry but that is a outright lie about Tekken. Harada wouldn't release a game five months from now. Nothing had even been hinted at a 20th anniversary. If Tekken had low views/entries then just say it. Don't lie to our faces and expect us just to go about our merry way. If ever the Tekken community needed to come together its now.

TrueGamingGuru said on February 6, 2014 at 9:18 p.m.

What ideas do you think the Tekken series should do to even reinvent itself? I got some recommends for what the Tekken series really need when it comes to teaching new players...

First of all have a better tutorial system (examples: VF5FS, DOA5+/DOA5U, PSASBR, Injustice, Skullgirls, & Killer Instinct) where you teach players from basics to advance, plus needs to teach you everything there is to know since Tekken games can be a very advance game, and TTT2 Fight Lab only gave you a basic rundown which is not going to help the new players what so ever since the mechanics can very separate. (at least add extra guides on the character select screen like Tekken Revolution & DOA5 games for certain moves that would do certain mechanics)

Another thing is make a character training system (examples VF & DOA Command Training, PSASBR Character Tutorials, Certain S.T.A.R. Lab Missions from Injustice, & even part of Skullgirls tutorials) which teaches you every movelist (except a few) for each character which the player would need to complete the required training system, and could add a reward from a trophy & even extra items.

These are at least my recommends for what the Tekken games really need, if they want to teach new players. I wouldn't want them to completely to water themselves down, and end up the same fate as Soul Calibur series.

#74
godfist314 said on February 6, 2014 at 9:31 p.m.

#74 I agree. I will love Tekken forever but it's become so niche now. After Harada sat there and pouted about his fanbase wanting frame data I kind of feel leaving TTT2 off the list is fitting. Plenty of other games/events to enjoy.

#75
Cartpusher said on February 6, 2014 at 9:32 p.m.

Those are good ideas but imho, i dont think Harada knows what he's doing with Tekken anymore. Thats all the series needs is a couple new ways to involve casuals. Tekken ball and tekken force mode would help. Maybe add in some new defense mechanics. And no more gimmicky new characters, (Alisa, Lars, Eliza,Bob). Just make the series stand out like it used to and not have each game just feel like an update.

#76
godfist314 said on February 6, 2014 at 9:40 p.m.

TrueGamingGuru said on February 6, 2014 at 10:04 p.m.

@godfist314 & Cartpusher

Who honestly knows what Harada has been doing with the Tekken games, I can see not always making the best choices. (of course not every developer can be winner all the time) Another thing there has been so many different projects first came TTT2, then getting Project X Zone imported, and lastly two free to play titles Tekken Card Tournament & Tekken Revolution. (there is also Tekken Arena on that same year) Even Tekken X SF really hasn't been getting plenty of details as of recent, which was a game that didn't even get another prototype image to be seen.

Who knows how well Tekken is going to age-well with the rise of next gen. and even other fighter games starting to offer more from content & even tutorials. Its an exciting & scary experience at the same time for what is going to become of the future Tekken games. I do hope that the Tekken games can improve from the previous games.

As a passionate fighter game collector, even parts of Tekken is starting to not get me interested enough (Tekken Revolution kept me playing it, but what else does Tekken have to offer) after TTT2 which is still a good game, but felt that there are other fighters that would keep me interest. (that's just my experience)

Lets at least hope the Tekken series isn't being run to the very bottom of the ground, and making the series to stand out from the others would at least be the best choice.

PS. There will possibly a few gimmicky new characters here & there, for what possible future there is for Tekken.

calypsx said on February 6, 2014 at 10:39 p.m.

Honestly, if you want to make Tekken series more popular it's not about toning down the character amount or their movesets. It's about removing Korean Back Dash. Make the process much easier, or remove it entirely and allow simply double tapping back to give you the same effect.

That way beginners don't immediately get turned off by it and go back to the less input heavy fighters. That's the key thing I see scare players away from Tekken.

#83
Gotomaster said on February 6, 2014 at 10:42 p.m.

Microsoft and Warner Bros care to pay Evo to feature their game? They are huge, multi-billion dollar companies. Why would they care that their games is in a relatively niche tournament, only to be seen by 1,000,000 at most overall? Answer, they wouldn't.

No TTT2? I've been making time to get practice in since last July. No 3D fighters at all huh? Sigh. I hear the arguments about dumbing the gameplay down and I hope this doesn't occur. Just look at SC5. That game is so watered down its rediculous. I love having to devout the heavy hours into learning a character's strengths and weaknesses. Seriously, KI is basically SF with exaggerated combos. Where is the diversity in the lineup. Don't get me wrong I thinks it's a good game, but we need more diversity.

#86

KI III being on the roster is a no brainer since it is the hot new fighter this year just like how Injustice suddenly got a lineup spot last Evo. Corporate meddling may or may not have anything to do with those game appearances, but whatever not my event.

Although I like Tekken, the game has stagnated in representation for the past several months. Last Evo showing was unimpressive. People are playing TR now for obvious reasons which is splitting from the TTT2 playerbase.

BB CP being on the lineup makes sense since that is the current (P4A was last year) anime fighter being played now. It will soon be replaced by P4USH and/or eventually GG XRD since the community tends to flock together to the newest arc sys fighter once it drops and largely abandon the previous one.

SFXT while I don't personally care for the game either way (dropped it few months ago) on the bright side that is one less Capcom game present on the lineup which means a greater diverse roster of fighters this year.

No 3D fighters this year :/ could have added at least DoA5U since that game has been steadily getting bigger competitively especially once the new character/s drop

Don't worry, next year's EVO will be amazing:

1. USF4 v.2015
2. UMvC3
3. GG Xrd -SIGN-
4. Killer Instinct
5. Tekken x Street Fighter
6. P4A: UUSH
7. Super Smash Bros. Wii U

;) I actually really like the 2014 lineup though.

I would love for a newer version of Skullgirls or something KOF related being out by then as well!

What if Smash 4 comes out before EVO? Will it replace Melee?

I just hope you're being sarcastic. Tekken Revolution doesn't even have offline versus, for f*cks sake.

RIP in peace SCV and already long-dead SFxT. You will (not) be missed.

Some day... Some day Skullgirls will make it to the official tournament and not just a side tourney.

Btw aside from skullgirls being understandably left out, the line up is perfect. Although the way things are going, I'm surprised they're playing SSBM, and not Project M.

Persona 4 Arena probably didn't make the cut because of BlazBlue Chronophantasma. Both are made by the same development team, so BBCP probably took priority as the "newer" game. Persona 4 Arena is getting a sequel/update soon anyway, so maybe that'll make next year's Evo line-up?

And can't wait to see Blazblue, without brokenoe, once the patch is out I'm definitely getting this game.

Kokonoe is NOT BROKEN! And RIP EVO bcos the PS3 isn't gonna be used bcos of the whiners complaining of an imaginary lag that does not exist.

A pretty pretictable lineup, i like Bazblue being there as well as KOFXIII, i'm a bit bummed that Injustice is in instead of Tekken or DOA5U, though they do get the numbers so it's to be expected. Seeing no 3D fighters is pretty bad and a shame unfortunately
