Zero Suit Samus shows some skin in her new Super Smash Bros. alternate costume, Assist Trophy makes players fight in the dark

Posted by Ryan 'Tryken' Tullis • August 19, 2014 at 11:57 a.m. PDT

New images of Super Smash Bros. have been released by Nintendo, including an alternate costume for Zero Suit Samus. While certain websites have already cried controversy with her Zero Suit, this latest outfit shows her battling it out in more casual wear.

Before people start making any calls, it should be noted that these costumes are not a new design for Samus. Both blue and red alternates are based on Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission respectively.

In other news, an Assist Trophy was also revealed to make combatants duke it out in the dark.

Below are the screenshots recently shared by Nintendo.

It should also be noted she's been wearing a bikini since '86.

The more you know!

People really called controversy with her Zero Suit?
Plus it looks nice :)

She wasn't the curvy Barbie back then though, but oh well, this seems the direction they plan on going with her.

Also first image link is broken.

Not one strong female lead who hasn't been reduced to running around in her underwear, huh. Bravo Japan for keeping the 70s era sensibilities going for 40 long years.

Anyone who is complaining about this has never played any of the Metroid games before.

#17
Maryokutai said on August 19, 2014 at 12:39 p.m.

I think the 'problem' here is that while it was a simple post-game bonus in Fusion (and other Metroid games), it's a substantial feature in this game. Zero Suit Samus went from 1% screentime to 50% screentime compared to fully armored Samus.

But I guess it's a back-and-forth argument. I don't have anything against the ZS per se, I just don't like the way they keep designing Samus. Metroid has always been a more rough universe, so it seems inappropriate to give her this busty anime look again and again.

Gurpwnder said on August 19, 2014 at 12:50 p.m.

Wait...WHY?!?!

So much focus on Zamus, but none on Samus? Zamus gets an alternate skin, but all of Samus' suits are mere palette swaps? I'd like to see Dark Suit Samus with the nice shoulderpieces, Light Suit Samus with the interesting chestpiece, Fusion Suit Samus with the blue parts of her suit actually being organic if they can take the time to put Zamus in a bikini.

Zamus was one of the better characters in Brawl and gets retooled because she can't use suit parts anymore, but Samus, who was struggling in Brawl gets next to nothing except a stronger charge shot and a nerfed n-air?

Why no respect for the legendary power suit?

I love all of the bitch tears the "social justice warriors" are crying over this. It's a perfect example of how a bunch of losers with nothing better to do will misconstrue something so completely just to suit their own pointless hyperbolic agenda.

In other news, Spats and Sports Bras now sexist.

Even in here I see people complaining about it...

Now they are claiming Nintendo is trying to portray this version of Samus as some DOA character when in reality this has been part of her design since the 80's.

The only two things that come to my head when reading through these comments are 1)Kids and 2)Feminists.

#28
Virtua_Kazama said on August 19, 2014 at 1:09 p.m.

I'm sure Nintendo will give Samus her Fusion Suit.

#29
SqueakyBloom said on August 19, 2014 at 1:13 p.m.

With the way video games were limited graphics-wise back then, to show that she was a woman inside her suit, the easiest way to show this was to have her in a bikini.

Its been over 20 years, you don't need her in a bikini to show or know that she is a woman. I find the fan service with Samus just sad (I don't mind fan service, but for Samus it find it in bad taste).

But it really doesn't concern me since I'll be using normal Samus.

The Prime series actually was canon to the Metroid timeline, fitting in quite nicely between Metroid 1 and 2.

That is until in M:OM, Samus said "This was my first team mission since becoming a freelance bountry hunter", which is clearly BS considering she worked with Gandrayda, Ghor, Rundas and Admiral Dane in Metroid Prime 3.

DARKKARASBLADE said on August 19, 2014 at 1:37 p.m.

Bet people would still cry if Bayonetta herself was in the game.

#34
Snow said on August 19, 2014 at 1:38 p.m.

This just in: "Strong Female Character" is not a generic nonsensical buzzwor- oh, there's something else here... these characters are not, I repeat, NOT allowed to wear dresses, swimsuits, or anything anyone may consider "feminine" for fear that these precious characters may be sexualized or display their femininity which is also bad. I'm also being told, yes, I am being told to roll a D20 in order to check my privilege.

#35
Pachendrix said on August 19, 2014 at 1:39 p.m.

I just find it both hilarious and ridiculous that almost all who are complaining, are women who are likely to have self confidence issues. Go ahead and dislike/hate reply this comment, that'll strengthen your pathetic arguments about sexism. Kappa

#36
Gurpwnder said on August 19, 2014 at 1:39 p.m.

Her n-air was probably her greatest tool in previous Smash games, but now it does a forward kick, followed by a backward kick instead of keeping her leg extended.

If I wanted to hit somebody behind me, I would b-air him / her. Each kick doesn't have nearly the amount of active frames that her amazing n-air did.

A more powerful charge shot is nice, but what else did she get to be buffed 'alot'?

VelvetWonder said on August 19, 2014 at 1:41 p.m.

True dat. Guys in the UFC wear even less !

#38
Gurpwnder said on August 19, 2014 at 1:42 p.m.

Also, making her M:OM Varia suit white doesn't make it a Light Suit. The Light suit had a CONSIDERABLY altered chestpiece and much more clean shoulderpieces. Her visor also did not glow green.

#39
LightSpdAeon said on August 19, 2014 at 1:46 p.m.

Plz... It isn't a bikini. I see more leg on pretty much every teen girl i see outside.

#40
AugustAPC said on August 19, 2014 at 1:50 p.m.

1. She was shown wearing less in 1986.
2. This is a canonical outfit from Zero Mission in 2002.
3. This outfit is commonplace for women training, jogging or sparring. It's entirely appropriate.

Anyone bitching about this is a tool. Modern "feminists" that try and take issue with things as reserved and mundane as this are just jokes. I'd take 3 year-old talking about politics more seriously than them.

Get the f*ck over it.

I main both versions of Samus and couldn't be happier.

The new alt for ZSS is amazing, by the way. Beating the games quickly while obtaining 100% of the powerups would net you screens like the one above and it is incredibly satisfying. This is a wonderful nod to that.

Huh... Ya the Fusion Suit's pretty weird. It has elements of her standard armor, but draws a lot from the Zero Suit. Honestly it could be a decent color for either. maybe we'll get a palette of it for both versions of Samus.

Exactly!

the Zero suit is actually more conservative than some of the stuff she was wearing before. But it was the start of Samus being marketed as sexy.

Nowadays people are just as likely to picture the Zero suit as the Varia suit when Samus is mentioned.

That, combined with the heels and the boob job is what makes people mad

Reminds me of those guys telling me to read the Halo books to understand the big, epic and fantastic story they're telling.

Also, I read the Metroid manga and think it's pretty rubbish. Instead of building upon the games it takes away everything what made them great. Obviously now with newer technology they have been able to implement that stuff into their most recent title as well and guess what? Other M turned out to be the worst received Metroid of all time. For some reason people seem to prefer the slightly darker, isolated and though atmosphere of the older games and Prime. I have no idea why they had to de-mistify the Chozo and let Samus behave like an insecure 16-year old with T&A, imported straight from whatever popular teenie-manga you want.

But even then Other M Samus didn't look as ridiculously anime like the Smash Bros. version. Don't know why they keep doing that, Sanke looked 'smoother' but still like Snake in Brawl, so why not just base her appearance on Other M? It's still busty so 'fans' won't be disappointed but it looks slightly more real and serious.

My only "complaints" are:
1.that samus has pretty much always worn her armor until this decade, where for some reason has become obselete(?)
2.what is their obsession with sexualizing samus??? Her new mole, always zero suited, high heels that she runs in somehow.
3. They sexualized samus, essentially making her look like a blonde bayonetta, instead of just putting bayonetta herself in.
