Footage of Chun-Li's regular Spinning Bird Kick juggle state change in Ultra Street Fighter 4

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • April 24, 2014 at 3:15 p.m. PDT

Updated: We had previously reported Chun-Li's Spinning Bird Kick properties as an undocumented change, and while this move was indeed changed in USF4, there appears to be no mention of it juggling in the change log.

Earlier: It seems that yet another undocumented Ultra Street Fighter 4 change has been discovered in the arcade version of the game. Yesterday, we saw a clip showing that Seth's long-ranged jump back heavy punch has been removed, but today, we get to see something new from Chun-Li.

In the following footage, you will see that Chun-Li's regular Spinning Bird Kick, (what appears to be the medium kick version), causes a juggle state in the corner. Vivi, the Chun player in this video, hits a big corner combo on a Poison player named Melo that juggles with SBK and ends with an Ex Lightning Legs follow-up.

As far as we know, this change has not been documented in any of the Ultra Street Fighter 4 change logs, and it was not included in the most recent list, that which allegedly contained all of the Ultra Street Fighter arcade changes.

Editor's note: The footage pauses for a brief second during the combo due to some stream lag, but you can still catch everything that is going on.

Hit the jump to see the video, and let us know what you think of Chun-Li's Spinning Bird Kick change.

This change is documented. It's been clearly stated that all versions of SBK now cause a knockdown so obviously an effect of the move in the corner is the ability to juggle opponents with EX, Super or Ultra combos similar to Ryu's Tatsu. Please correct this article. I don't see a need to sensationalize something that doesn't need it.

#5
star123us said on April 24, 2014 at 3:27 p.m.

What else she can do after that? It seems EX leg was quick enough to do the combo. And it was done in the corner. Still, her damage scaling is huge and the situation is very limited.

Dreamking23 said on April 24, 2014 at 3:28 p.m.

"- While performing Light, Medium, Heavy Spinning Bird Kick Chun-Li will now be knocked down if hit."

The change says that Chun-Li will be knocked down if she is hit during Spinning Bird Kick.

You should have checked your translation. Shoryuken had a different change listed for SBK and apparently, it's what seems to be correct.

#10
beita said on April 24, 2014 at 3:32 p.m.

Well... technically they didn't lie.

You know how awkward it'd look if someone got hit by Chun's Spinning Bird Kick and after the last hit, they were suddenly on the ground lol

Think of it this way, EX SBK also causes a juggle state in the corner. That knocks down too. So the regular LK/MK/HK versions of SBK were just given EX SBK's knockdown properties.

#11
lh said on April 24, 2014 at 3:33 p.m.

only the last hit knocks down a grounded opponent, but what if an airborn opponent is hit by one of the hits before the last one?

ken's ground hurricane will juggle an airborn opponent

sakura's air hurricane doesn't knockdown or juggle an airborn opponent (not even a soft kd)

I was planning on using the light SBK from max distance to knockdown a grounded opponent, but if the other hits will juggle an airborn opponent...

...wonder if they nerfed her stun, she has pretty high stun resistance.

THawk probably got a few hidden nerfs he seems real strong now

Just want to correct u a bit, u have been a bit wrong about it twice so here i go: about Seth's "yoga sniper", it's not forward/back jump HP, but NEUTRAL/backward jump HP. Forward jump HP never been a yoga sniper from the beginning. Thought u may want to correct that part:)

Doopliss said on April 24, 2014 at 3:35 p.m.

No, that's just you misspelling the translation. SRK has it the way it's supposed to be. SFIV can't force a character to be knocked down from moves that normally doesn't anyway.

I'm glad that you found a video that confirm you can actually juggle from it though, some people claimed you couldn't... based on an USFIV hack.

#17
OortCloud7 said on April 24, 2014 at 3:36 p.m.

Funny... That was the first thing I was gonna try out when I picked up ultra. I figured it would juggle

#18
star123us said on April 24, 2014 at 3:39 p.m.

Guys.... We can accept this change as the same thing as Akuma's Tatsu. He can put opponent to juggle state after the tatsu and also cause knockdown. So maybe the Dev team made it like Akuma' Tatsu(But still not many options after that)

#21
Captainbuttocks said on April 24, 2014 at 3:46 p.m.

you could probably get a really sweet reset after with just a normal to flip after.

or cant she just sweep after?

#22
xShonuffx said on April 24, 2014 at 3:47 p.m.

Perhaps it is a mistranslation, maybe it is trying to say She knocks down not get knocked down.

Im not taking anything from the guys who worked hard translating but these things are possible even from the guys at Capcom.

OR the person who wrote it in Japanese didn't hear correctly and the changes listed is an error. That is also possible. Happens all the time.

#23
star123us said on April 24, 2014 at 3:49 p.m.

I don't think she can just sweep after normal SBK...(Not fast enough)

#24
chowdizzle said on April 24, 2014 at 3:51 p.m.

Haha Dreamking you should update the article considering what people are saying. EHubs already has a reputation of being for scrubs and if this is from a translation error then this article only helps that idea.

Anyways, cool change to Chun regardless.

I'm going to guess it's just a juggle state and not float. I'm guessing the follow ups are ex legs/ex sbk/super/head stomps

#30
Dreamking23 said on April 24, 2014 at 4:18 p.m.

I just want to point out really quickly that the change documented mentions her SBK knocking the opponent down, or "blow away down" when translated more directly.

A knockdown technically isn't a juggle state, so this still could be a new change that we haven't heard of yet. We really can't know until an English change log is released, unfortunately.

#31
BigFleccs said on April 24, 2014 at 4:19 p.m.

Dude clarification is close but no cigar. In Vanilla Seth could neutral/j back HP for sniper. In Ultra he was only going to have jump back HP sniper. (Not neutral)

SeriphAngel said on April 24, 2014 at 4:46 p.m.

Since that juggles now in the corner would that not mean her senrestukyaku setup and head stump set up are gone and that she loses more damage value than gains due to her already high proration?

And for those whining about Chun being broken let us get real. Chun has only been truly good in Third and SFxTK and okay in the alpha. Everything she has been mediocre. Low damage, high proration, extremely unsafe jump, nearly no cross up value, lack of pressure, terrible fireball, anti air game subpar, wake up game nearly none existent, and almost no good punishes?

Far from broken. She was in need of some buffs.

#38
GreedyMcGurgleburg said on April 24, 2014 at 4:47 p.m.

Does this mean she is broken and needs to be nerf batted down to the bottom of the barrel?

Hey Capcom!

If you're going to run with the -5 FADC DP changes, at LEAST make the hitbox and hurtbox on Ryu's DP more like Vanilla SF4 so it doesn't trade as much!

Especially online! (wheres those few frames of lag can mess with my timing and results in unfavorable trades!)

Gotta put a stop to all these retarded scrubs jumping in and mashing block strings!

And leaving FADC DP -5 on block, will stop the 'get out of jail free' card that scrubs are complaining about!

Let's do it!

So I must have missed this in the change list but at 2:15 it looks like Poison can cancel her sweep? It almost looks like Melo wanted to whiff cancel but couldn't do it. Then he was able to cancel the sweep on block, at least it looked like it to me. Does anyone have knowledge on this?

#50

Poison looking strong.

No, you're right. Brolylegs was talking about it on Twitter the other day. Not sure if it's something that'll be patched or not though. Almost like how Guy can cancel the first hit of his reversal.

i don't know why seth's sniper is being referred to as "undocumented" at all. it was listed in the beta changelist and then omitted from the final changelist because that was comparing the difference between AE2012 to ultra, not from the previous ultra builds to the final one. that it wasn't in the final changelist is how we knew seth wasn't retaining sniper. same was true for most of the other characters as well. why was anyone surprised?

#53
2101RYU said on April 24, 2014 at 6:23 p.m.

can't poison also charge her fireballs and dash cancel them? this doesn't seem like any sort of glitch or oversight, it seems like they intentionally retained some aspects of her sfxt mechanics.

"there appears to be no mention of it juggling in the change log."

It was listed in the change log for a long time, actually. It says her SBK knocks down on the last hit. Knock-down = you can juggle off of it if the spacing/timing permits and you use a "pursuit property" move.

I don't play Chun, so I don't know if her lightning legs have the "pursuit property." If they don't, then this is not a 'juggle,' it's a 'float,' meaning she would be able to hit any single move (besides throw and air throw) off of it.

#56
Darc_Requiem said on April 24, 2014 at 6:43 p.m.

Viper has a battle suit and Juri has the Feng Shui Engine. Juri may be able to go toe to toe with Chun without her eye boosting her ki, but Viper would get owned without her suit by most of the cast.

#57
FightDirty said on April 24, 2014 at 6:56 p.m.

@ 65

That's what gets me about the newer female fighters. One is only strong because of her suit, the other because of her feng shui eye, neither one truly strong on her own.

Beyond that, they both have retarded character designs and in actual gameplay I don't find them all that difficult. Have far more troubles with Cammys and Akumas but that's just me. Chun has always held the title of strongest woman in the world and I don't think either Juri or Viper has what it takes to pry it from her hands.

#58
bluAsterisk said on April 24, 2014 at 7 p.m.

Hate as much as you want but I still believe she will be in top 3 with all those buffs. Not overpowered, not without bad matchups, but still very good.

She missed solid AAs - they gave her good one.
She had low damage output - they improved it with stepkick buff, viable SBK combos, U2 buff etc.
She lost to rushdown characters - they nerfed a lot of them (RIP Rufus), buffed her reversal and added late wake-up that benefits her turtle nature a lot.

And guess what? I am actually fine with characters like Chun being top tier (despite the fact that she is my worst matchup), because she is pretty hard to play, unlike C**** and S***.

#71

#72
Captainbuttocks said on April 25, 2014 at 12:52 a.m.

I cant believe people are crying about chun as if shes OP.
All you have to do is focus everything dash forward and punish.
Her U2 set ups with EX legs scale a TON.
Her U1 drops some of the cast that can just get up and punish her for free.
She is free on wakeup.
No mashable moves.
No srk (see no mashable moves)
No vortex
Fireball is ass.
SBK is ass.
Lightning Legs combos only Desk can do.
No quick armor break to react with on the fly.
Horrible U2 damage.
Horrible U2 chip.
Horrible U2 invincibilty
Moon jump.

Ryuu33 prefers boring ass DUUR DEEE DUUUR MASHY RYU over Chun? PFFT gimme a break.

#73
quicks said on April 25, 2014 at 1:11 a.m.

She won't be top 3

She still don't have solid aa's flip kick, while better is still situational, she'll still have massive issues with air to ground moves

She never actually had that low damage, off the right hit she hits like a brick, but then again you'll never land a jump,in this video she predicted a fireball from poison ,jumped before it was thrown and still couldn't punish( and people said her jump was fine?)
In any situation you can land sbk you could land another round of legs , its yet to be seen how much more damage sbk combos can do so it's to early for that. But from the earlier build it appears that they did some unseen buff to legs frame advantage as it was easy to do legs>ultra

#74
NukeRog said on April 25, 2014 at 2:11 a.m.

All her AAs are specific and hard to master but she still has a button for every type of jump-in. And flip-kick counters almost all close jump-ins.

+ It is very stupid to complain about the fact that some character can't jump on others in a Street Fighter game. Especially over fast recovery fireballs. ESPECIALLY when said character has one of the best anti-fireball ultras (not on par with Abel's but whatever) in the game. Not everyone has to be Cammy/Rufus. SBK buff is not for that. It's for crumple and punishes which is great because her leg combos are still hard as nails and unreliable even on top level.

#75
star123us said on April 25, 2014 at 2:26 a.m.

Um.... what bout Guile match? Do you think she can do anything against him in Ultra?

#76
NukeRog said on April 25, 2014 at 2:40 a.m.

She can try to outpoke him, bait some stuff etc. It may not be in her favor but it is not broken either

#77
quicks said on April 25, 2014 at 5:31 a.m.

not everybody needs to be a fast jumper, but most characters jump for a reason and one of those reasons is prediction of a fireball ,

chun has the 2nd slowest jump in the game, im not asking her to be rapid, but some balance would be nice

as for leg combos being hard.. maybe but thats up to the player to practice

#78
Aluppoj said on April 25, 2014 at 6:35 a.m.

I must be the only one who likes Chun's hang time?

I find it a dangerous asset with her great neutral jump RH. Really tricks Rekka characters and great for wall dive happy Adon players.

I just change the timing of my jump setups to accommodate for the amount of time in the air. That's on Knockdown of course.

#79
NukeRog said on April 25, 2014 at 7:54 a.m.

Thing is, her anti-fireball tech is far above average already. With those fast and fairly long pokes, U1 and Hazanshu she has far more chances to counter even fast fireballs than any character who has to rely on "normal" jumps.

#80
JAYstarrah said on April 25, 2014 at 8:03 a.m.

Are the people claiming Chun to be top 3 even play/main Chun?

Chun may have gotten better, but there's no way in hell she's top 3, probably not even top 10. Stop kidding yourselves.

#81
Captainbuttocks said on April 25, 2014 at 8:34 a.m.

I have picked up Chun for a few weeks now and shes so much fun. People rage on me for taunting them on their wakeup while they mash DP from a mile away.

Chun just pokes her head out and laughs. LOL good times good times.

Its so rewarding to win with her. Since she doesnt have all the newbish tools others have.

A good player can steamroll Chun with safejumps, OS, and Focus attacks.
