Free-to-play game Soul Calibur: Lost Swords available now for PS3 users

Bandai Namco released their free-to-play single player fighting game today for PlayStation 3 users in North America, Soul Calibur: Lost Swords.

Long-time series favorites like Sophitia and Taki return this time around, and more fighters will be unlocked with time.

Your character can be customized through competing quests, which unlock items and accessories that can be equipped.

Players can also use weapons and armor taken from defeated opponents, or build new ones from raw materials and imbue them with different elements.

Various weapon and element types are stronger or weaker against specific enemies. Hit the jump to view the release trailer.

You can do better than that, Namco. Give SCV some love. Patch it. Put some DLC into it again. It makes no sense as to why you treat SC like garbage compared to everything else.

Soul Calibur has always been, and still is, my favorite 3D fighting game. And I'm the first to tell you that I'm not getting anywhere near a single player fighting game. The reason I play fighting games is competitiveness, and there's nothing competitive about fighting against a potentially underwhelming AI. If I didn't touch tekken revolution, because it lacked local multiplayer, I'm sure as hell not getting this with no multiplayer at all, even if it's my favorite 3d fighting franchise.

man, Can't developers just come together and stop making games for one console. I would love to play as Taki again, but I'm a proud Xbox 360 owner... Sigh, oh well, looks like I have to be a proud PS4 owner as well.

I have no reason to be interested in this game, even as a major SoulCalibur fiend. The mechanics look interesting but I'll never know how it works competitively.

Anyway, this game sounds awful. Limited play time and no multiplayer? The absolute two worth things that can be done with a fighting game.

AP System: The game is time-limited by a points system, which depletes every time you attempt a mission. You can purchase AP potions with your real money to increase your play time.

From Feb. 20th 2014 to May 20th 2014, people who purchase Soulcalibur II HD during this period will receive an 3-piece set to use in Soulcalibur: Lost Swords. This set includes:

One AP recovery potion
One continue ticket
A female-only CAS item, a triangle bikini

People who think this is truly "free" are idiots. This is the worst thing for fighting games and should not be endorsed.

Nearly every casual player I've ever known was more interested in Weapon Master, customization, guest characters, jiggle physics... everything else under the sun in regards to Soul Calibur EXCEPT FOR the competitive aspect. All I see this as is focusing on some of the unique strengths of the series that have proven to be popular, even if a handful of people are going to be unhappy with it.

Have you ever consider that SC Lost Swords is different from SCV from the mechanics, the modes, & characters? Besides I don't think Project Soul/Bandai Namco will ever update SCV again.

Bro you can seriously understand why there would be people who would think this is completely free? Especially those who don't play free to play games often? I started playing DC Universe online when it became free to play, you don't have to keep paying to play that, all you have to pay for is DLC and membership deals, and I'll admit I was interested in giving Lost Souls a shot but if what you say is true I changed my mind.

My point is you cannot realistically expect everyone to know everything that you know, keep that in mind and you'll get along with more people.

Wow at least Harada of Tekken took the time to revamp the graphics of TKR even though the mechanics were watered down for newer users which would have been fine if the "super" like moves were not obvious because then it would be like TK5.

This however not even offering any form of multiplayer makes the whole fight to create better weapons concept seem pointless since you will not be fighting real people people to try them on.

I love my Sophitia but they chose the wrong game to bring you back into.

Because it is free I will give it a shot but I doubt my opinion will change that much.

Soul Calibur V is probably my favorite fighting game in this current generation; it's a damn shame no one got into it. Really hope they throw some DLC at it, but we all know that's not going to happen at this point.

I found SCV a little too formulated. Not enough variety or skill to it imo. It felt like all you needed was one or two decent mixups or setups and you'd win most of your matches.

I actually tried to play this game last night, and guess what? The servers apparently were not working properly. Me and a bunch of other people were unable to play the game because for some reason, Project Soul did not check the servers before releasing this game to the public.

I know the game is Free-To-Play, but c'mon now, seriously? I guess I'll try it later when I get home from work today. Don't have the time to check now.

They threw pounds of dlc into scv. Unless you mean something more specific. As I understand it's a feat the game even came out, as evidenced by the cut budget which showed in the lack of a full story. I personally wasn't too crazy about all of the cut characters only because the series has a history of create a soul mode. Ffs is sc3 they added some styles that were cas only. So why not have talim taki or good old fashioned kilik cas characters? Xiba is nice but I prefer the original as opposed to the hybrid.

But after all is said and done, take is here and sophitia as well. Considering what it is, i'd keep this game on the hard drive if they made it the soul reunion which everyone coming back even if its single player. Even from soul blade.

Well, you should request to the mods of this site to never report on irrelevant fg's that you deem unworthy of diehard fighting fans. Aggh..its thinking like that what gives the fgc the image it has now, a bunch of hipsters and elitists who think no fighting game is worth making unless its predicated by its competitiveness. I have seen a lot changed in the last 20+ yrs in the fighting game community. Obviously this game was not made with a competitive scene in mind, but it is still a fg and therefore constitutes it's relevancy here.

Part of people not getting into SCV was because they were disappointed on what SCV had to offer from single player mode/arcade stories is pretty lacking, almost every fan favorite from SE-SCIV is completely missing, and even some hardcore fans hated that part of SCV gameplay is completely watered down. There is no chance for SCV to be getting more DLC, since Project Soul/Bandai Namco had completely cancelled its support with SCV so which ever was the latest DLC from customization is the last DLC for SCV.

To be honest I love SC so much that I am going to try it anyway SCV is my favourite SC game after the original one on Dreamcast despite the piss poor character roster (such as the stupid changes) and single player mode.

But the competitive aspect is what drew me to the series and keeps me there without it I dont think I will stick around the online components of 2 HD and 4 were a joke 5s online was as excellent as the offline single player was rubbish they should redo 5 take out the horrible new cast add in the old favourites but expand it put in a weapon master mode and increase the already excellent customisation and then they would have an awesome game.

Part of SCV is suppose to be a new era, meaning SCIV was completely ending the saga between Siegfried & Nightmare even couple of the fan favorite veterans would now no longer serve the purpose on fighting each other which makes room for new characters. From Taki who now teaches the students of future on becoming ninja, meaning Natsu is now the replacement, even Leixia & Xiba learns from Xianghua & Kilik. Even Sophitia died from trying to save Pyrrha, which Pyrrha has pieces of Soul Edge to keep her alive and Patroklos is wanting to find his sister.

However, what this game completely fails in is a proper story along with backstories that could've easily explain about the ones who previously appear in SCIV, (they don't have to be playable characters for backstories) and Project Soul completely rushed the game out which part of its single player was completely scrapped with 1/4 of Story Mode left of the game. Even some of the newcomers could've had proper Arcade Stories since they do have connections to the veterans.

SCV as whole has nothing to give it a proper follow up and Project Soul would've been better not releasing it or even develop SCV. They should've take a break from the series and take as much time to deliver a proper follow up if they were to replace the fan favorite veterans to make room for newcomers, since SCV takes place 17 years later after SCIV.

I've played it for a short while and have a few thoughts about the game.

- It uses the 'time limit' model, where you gain AP every 3 minutes and spend them to play. I never ran out of points when I played which surprised me but I don't know if it will get worse.
- Earning weapons and armour feels nice.
- Elemental types (fire < water < wind < fire; light = dark) on items actually makes the game more tedious (you can only switch items in character menu and not before/after fights).
- Loading times are TERRIBLE!

Unless there's something wrong with my console, the loading times are too slow and definitely need to be fixed. I'm hoping Namco will provide more features and patches because it's not that great at the moment.

I'm not calling it Western since this isn't the time or the moment for something like this. Lets just say the North American release doesn't work at all, it keeps sending Me back to the title screen. So I only just ask since you happen to got the chance to play this game (unlike a few people & Myself). I tried deleting & reinstall it still didn't work.

From what I've seen from the Japanese release (which also gotten a beta before the actual release), I did see that the loading times are long indeed. It was just a quick question.

Free doesn't always mean it'll be something good. I think what upsets people about this is that this game isn't really giving people what they want out of a SC game. And it's not a proper follow-up after the mess that was SCV and it doesn't seem to be trying to fix the problems that that game caused.

I still havent gotten past the title screen. This should have been an add on to SCV. Missing old characters and a lack single player content were big complaints for a lot of people.

I have loved SC since the first one on the Dreamcast, it has a special place in my heart. However, I cannot bear to see the mess it has become.

SC is a fighting game, and fighting games thrive on competition, and with Lost Souls allowing you to only battle ai controlled opponents, this game is basically like being in the last arcade on Earth, while also being the last person on Earth.

Modes like Weapon Master, and Creation have done nothing but detract from the SC's focus to be a better fighting game above all else, and Lost Souls is an evolution of that problem. I like many of you enjoyed Weapon Master on SCII, but only as a side dish, I certainly would not have entertained buying SCII if that was what the ENTIRE game was about.

Lost Souls is the perfect name for this game, because Soul Calibur is VERY MUCH a Lost Soul. If SC ever wants to find itself again it will have to undo basically everything that SCV has done; seeing how Namco OBVIOUSLY does not know what to do with SC, I doubt that happens.

Its not really Namco that doesn't know what to do with SC, its more about Project Soul that tends to take SC into the wrong direction since it is their game. The real answers when it comes to Namco fighter games are the developers from the Tekken Team, Project Soul, CyberConnect2 etc. are responsible for their own games, Bandai Namco's only responsibility is just publishing the game.

Part of Project Soul's goal is starting to lean towards the newcomers/casual gamers and starting completely from scratch with SCV, meaning what hardcore/FGC/SC fans were familiar with the past games all the way to SCIV is either completely different or no longer a thing. Even extra modes isn't going to change the gameplay, since Project Soul isn't restricted by a deadline and they could've easily taken as much of their time. Its more like Project Soul just doesn't have the same nor proper quality as the Tekken Team on how they release their games.

Project Soul could've easily follow the Arcade route before delivering console releases, but nope.
