'Most people were generally satisfied with Ultra Street Fighter 4's first location test' - latest Saikyo blog divulges player opinion statistics

The first Ultra Street Fighter 4 location test took place, and concluded a week ago in Japan, and this week's Saikyo blog focuses on the opinions given by those who got a chance to test out the upcoming update.

ComboFiend over on Capcom Unity posted the translated version of Ayano-san's most recent blog, and this installment shows the statistics of an online survey taken by location test goers, in which they rated the game from "Good" to "Terrible".

Not only were they asked to rate the overall experience, but players were prompted to assign a rating to each of the 4 new characters, and each of the new game mechanics.

Ayano says that people were generally satisfied with the game overall, but were displeased with the information given on balance changes, and the new game mechanics.

Hit the jump to check out the stats.

We're still in the middle of balancing these characters, but comments like "Elena's strong" and "Hugo's weak," and comparisons between Rolento's current incarnation and his previous version are among the feedback we’ve got so far that really stands out. In particular we got a lot of opinions about Rolento's slide.

For Poison, we received a lot of requests to increase her movement speed; and we also got a lot of feedback about her appearance… Seems like there are a lot of hidden Poison fans out there! Haha.

Ultra Combo Double is the system we've received the most feedback about since its announcement. At the location tests, it seems there were a lot of players who took a liking to it. In particular, people who picked the new characters often chose the Ultra Combo Double option. However, there were many players who felt that the Ultra Combo Double option didn't really suit their character, and boy did they let us know! We'll be thinking of a way to address this before the final version is released.

As this was the first time most players saw Red Focus in action, they didn't really get a good grasp of this new system and told us that they needed to spend more time using it. After they have played with it a lot more, I believe players will have a better understanding of the meter cost, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using it. I think opinions will change as we hold more location tests.

Similarly, players also didn't really get a chance to fully explore the delayed wakeup mechanic. This will also just take time and experience to get used to. I hope we can balance it in a way that will expand options for both the attacker and the defender.

They should know better than to rely on the FGC for feedback.....

So what will this mean? Yeah, nothing at all

ChessDragon said on November 29, 2013 at 10:36 a.m.

Seems like delayed wakeup is the most welcome of all (at least amongst Japanese)? The overall impressions don't seem all that positive, but imo that's fine... complaints may be annoying to us but if the game devs can scan over them all perhaps we can get a better final product.

And I also wonder how the character ratings were done. Some people may have voted them on how well they thought they fit into the game, while others may have voted them on how powerful they felt they were. Thus, one "good" score may not be equivalent to another "good" score.

If "average" means satisfied then yes

Yeah, interesting note Jaaj301. Many people are expressing concern over some of the balance changes to characters. Some of the changes done to Bison, Rufus, Yun, and (as much as I hate him) Zangief just to name a few were a bit unnecessary.

I'm just looking at this as 63% approved, 37% not approved. That's a 63% approval rating combined overall. Just saying that sounds bad.

6 out of 10 stars...

W-Ultra shoud have the damage balanced per Ultra, and not the same percentage to all.

What does Not Good/Terrible mean for the mechanics? Does it mean that there's no use of them, or does it mean that it's too overpowered and it's a terrible idea to keep them?

Eventhubs should rename this artcile. Hugo confirmed terribad by 49% of Japanese testers.

Honestly I'm not overhyped about new characters and mechanics in fighting games till I have enough time to learn how to impliment them. I was warry at first with the introduction of focus attack, but now it's hard to imagine sf4 without it. Same with new characters that have no tech, no comboes etc. as we learn how to implement new mechanics over time we will find them a more enjoyable part of the game.

Shouldn't have a damage change at all since it drains the full meter.....

Specials do more damage as it is now. Even supers. And Ultra is supposed to be the "grand attack"

I heard a lot of different stories. From Kim1234's twitter:

"Kim ‏@Kim1234_ALL_DAY

@ultradavid @jchensor Also a comment about the abusable characters. Juri and Vega players felt great their characters got better but felt it was almost comical how good they got. One vega said he got kinda bored. Top juri's played the same as they always did and won, with seemingly less effort.
Nemo picked chun/yang and even though he doesnt play anymore, zoned out everyone with chun/yang then LEFT the arcade."

...doesn't sound very satisfying, does it?!

bigjbilly said on November 29, 2013 at 11:08 a.m.

I think we should all wait to get our hands on ultra, and then make our own decision. It's next to impossible to know how this game will be played even 3 months after release and all the new stuff that will be found. I'm sure Hugo will be fine in the final build. Heck, he might be bomb right now for all we know. Maybe he's not supposed to be played like a crappy Zangief. Maybe he has some crazy undiscovered tech that makes him a beast.

I'm a little worried with this testing process... Shouldn't they let the test run for longer ?
Every character got changed, there is 3 new gameplay mechanics to master and 4 characters to to study... How can anyone make a make a constructive feedback in such little time ?

When you see the balance change Combofiend made its very clear that its designed for pro matches. Who is expecting casuals to test Ken walk speed when there is 4 new characters to play with ?
He should make everyone implied, especially pros, to test the build throuroughly.
Make it an closed beta or open it later for everyone, but make the pro part of it.

you're failing to appreciate the implications of having access to two different powerful utility options at the ready. damage isn't everything.

also "drains the full meter" doesn't necessarily mean much since you can pretty easily get two ultras a round.

This is a bit much.

How can a location already determine the viability of a new character? What happened to letting the game evolve for people to adapt and re-adapt?

#26
DarknessFallz said on November 29, 2013 at 12:15 p.m.

Japanese players love to "fall for traps" amirite? :-3

On a serious note this gives the impression that all changes are meh and not really that good so I don't see how anyone could say there was a general feeling of general satisfaction. More like a general feeling of" it's ok I guess" or "could be worse". Which are not good when you're touting that the game will be brand new and great

Because of the short time I'm guessing whatever the highest percentage is for the characters is most likely not going to portray their viability.. its just speculation.

If the highest percentage is average, most likely that character is okay.

ButterKnife said on November 29, 2013 at 12:51 p.m.

Judging by the context of the article, I think they chose their words wrong.

I doesn't seem to be about what changes people like and don't like. It's about what people feel was over-powered and under-powered.

If I'm right, it means that most of the players thought delayed wakeup was over-powered.

#33
caruga said on November 29, 2013 at 12:54 p.m.

It's very obvious they buffed characters that didn't need much. Mid tier characters generally need extremely subtle changes. No, make that every character. I also get that feeling that people who don't play the game are making the decisions (and not Combofiend).

#34
Bustahwurf said on November 29, 2013 at 12:56 p.m.

"Average" means they don't really care enough to have a real opinion

#35
shinra358 said on November 29, 2013 at 12:59 p.m.

So what? Was is unbalanced to have multiple supers "at the ready" in 75% of other SF games :P

You have to lose life to get a revenge meter and it fully drains once you use 1 ultra. That is balanced enough!

You're failing to appreciate why anyone would use an ultra which has cool down time if it misses when normals and supers could get the job done. With your logic, what is the purpose of using an ultra at all~

Xykes said on November 29, 2013 at 1:03 p.m.

In relation to some players not liking double Ultra, they said "We'll be thinking of a way to address this before the final version is released", but I thought that the fact that you have a choice is addressing it, what else could they do to it...hmm...

#38
bagel_bytez said on November 29, 2013 at 1:17 p.m.

It's a balance update, not a completely new game. That means subtle changes so it's not like, omg! This will be the best new game on the market 2014. It's more like, wow this well established game has a breath of fresh air with the new changes, mechanics and tiers. Of course ppl are shoulder shrugged about the update because we won't see the impact the changes have had on the game for a while after release. Probably about half a year after usf4's drop there will be the most hype (tournament wise).

Personally I'm gonna enjoy a stronger dhalsim, but who knows how strong he'll be in relation to the other characters, so fingers crossed

#39
lh said on November 29, 2013 at 1:21 p.m.

They should change the focus attack system, I'm used to pressing a button to get an attack, not releasing a button to get an attack, it feels un-natural.

Capcom should also have some kind of on-screen indicator during the match to tell the players how the network connection is, and have it update during the match, incase there is something funny going on.

#49
oghaggard said on November 29, 2013 at 5:19 p.m.

Unfortunately, mature, wait-and-see reactions like yours are too rare in the FGC...

This build is being referred to as an "alpha" build. I think more people need to keep that in mind and realize that the game won't hit consoles for another half a year.

From what I've seen of the footage of the location test, I'd probably be right alongside everyone in voting an "average" reaction to the build. They need to polish the new characters more before I'm really willing to judge them (the simple fact that Elena can crouch under various grounded attacks shows that this build may have been slightly rushed...).

#50
electpaisa said on November 29, 2013 at 5:35 p.m.

If somebody made product where after consumer testing 72% of the users scored it as being "average or below", the product would never hit the market and the designers would get fired. I usually cut some slack to Capcom being the Capcom fanboy that I am, but I'm getting really worried about USF4 after seeing these number. I still don't understand why they are spending all of their resources in more characters for 39-character game and a balance patch for a pretty balanced game overall instead of improving the netcode and/or adding more content and game modes.

It seems to me that Delayed wake up is not as bad as the rush down characters says it is according to the statistics. Red focus attack is what seems to be most hated AND least liked the most. Delayed wake up is most liked and least hated by a large margin.

Not Good/ Terrible
1) 37% red focus attack,
2) 36% Double Ultra,
3) 25% Delayed wake up

Good/ Okay
1) 42% delayed wake up
2) 39% double ultra
3) 25% red focus attack,

NOT A SINGLE NEW MOVE in what is titled as a major update. Furthermore, judging by disclosed balance changes, certain chars seem ruined. :( One must ask himself whether Capcom even bothered to take our feedback into the account.
I agree on red focus being completely unnecessary. A needles addition to already near-perfect gameplay mechanics. I'm afraid it's the implementations like that which will ultimately bring USF4 a fate of SFxT. It's like 'hey, let's just throw in random technical baggage just so we can differentiate this game from SSF4AE and milk some more dough!' I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but it looks that way to me.
Of course that the new characters will be unbalanced in a one way or another. If history taught us anything, it's that the newcomers are always critical (Yun & Yang were OPed while E. Ryu & Oni are currently bottom tiers). I think it's safe to assume that we'll be in for another update by the end of the 2014. :( The question is will the community even bother with it... This USF4 testing proved that the SF4 hype is slowly waning (no wonder since it's around since 2008). Of course, the game is far from finished, but, bearing in mind everything said and done, I just can't be optimistic...
Still, I don't think that going with SF5 is the answer. Seeing how this update is handled, devs are obviously lacking fresh ideas. I feel that if they were to start working on the next numeric entry to the series, it would be a tremendous disappointment. They apparently have nothing on it. Who knows? Maybe Killian left for a reason?
