Maximilian continues to push out content featuring Double Helix Games' recently released Xbox One exclusive, Killer Instinct. Today, we have Max's video review of the title, in which he discusses the ins and outs of the game, while speaking over his own match footage.

Not only that, but he also uploaded part 1 of a set between himself, and Double Helix Games' community manager, FilthieRich. Max selects his current main, Sadira, and Rich chooses quite possibly his best character, Glacius.

Be sure to check everything out after the jump.

not sure why he felt the need to review it...pretty clear already how he feels about it. maybe he just wanted to assert that in a more formal way i guess.

KI looks pretty good aside from the fact that it's sort of not complete (and I will likely purchase it if it comes to PC), but from an observer-only standpoint I'm a little concerned about how "constant" the action seems to be. There are -some- footsies but the majority of the time the opposing characters seem to be in each other's face, if not actively comboing each other. The character models take up more space on the screen than most FGs, which contributes to that. It made me realize that while I lightly make fun of matches like Sagat/Guile fireball wars, they actually have an intricacy that I have yet to see from KI. But again, I haven't laid my hands on it myself.

Wow, interesting stuff in the match:
-Sadira can go under Glacius' standing limbs/ice with her sweep.
-Max was able to continue the combo after his shadow move traded with Glacius.
-Proper use of combo/counter breakers, and only a few lock outs.

I'm gonna buy this.

Great game, just needs more content now. Thanks DH for making it so fun.

One more thing:
-If Glacius touches Sadira's web balls with one of his limbs, he's gonna get hit by it.

Don't get me wrong, I mostly agree with Max's review, but there is an obvious conflict of interest here that hurts the legitimacy of this review

Believe me what your seeing a lot of the time is people taking advantage of the combo system and when you actually start playing the game theres more to it then just combos. The same thing could be said about UMvC3 but remember you have to put yourself in the right position before you can land a touch of death combo in UMvC3.

Your going to find people who will block a good majority of your attacks which is why throws sometimes end up playing a major role in some of your matches. You cant just land whatever combos either if you don't switch from different attacks your going to get a combo breaker every time.

The main draw of the engine is the combo system itself so yea your going to see a lot of combos but the combos system isn't as simple as you would think by just watching videos. If you understand the gameplay system then you find out how much you actually have to switch between attacks against someone who knows what there doing.

People approach the game the game differently too lots of glacius players for example you face will just try to zone you out. When I first started learning combos I was like im just going combo people to death but I found out quick that you just cant go in there trying to combo your opponent.

Like UMvC3 you have to set your opponents for those combos but unlike it you have to be careful that you don't do the same button presses that you can get away with in other fighting games because of combo breakers. So yea no bread and butter combos are going to work every time against your opponents if they know what there doing.

I really think your going to enjoy this game and I really do hope theres a PC release so another audience gets to enjoy this game. Believe me ive caught so many Jago players trying to zone me out and doing a good job because if you make a mistake trying to get in your going to eat a combo.

I don't think projectile attacks play the same role as say in a game like SF but this isn't SF. You can still zone pretty well with Jago and Glacius if you can get your opponent afraid to make there way in with the threat of punishing them. A smart KI players will use the fireballs trying to bait you into make a mistake instead of just trying to win with just zoning alone.

Anyway if your read sarif2soon's comments you can tell hes doing a great job at analyzing whats going on and that's because even though he hasn't played the game yet he understands taken the time to understand the system. Like I said I hope the game makes its way to PC im sure youd enjoy it got my fingers crossed.

The whole "HE WUZ PAYED/PERSUADED TO SAY GOOD THING ABOUT GAME" thing is old and tired as hell. If you're gonna make up tin foil hat theories then make something new at least. Something that wasn't stolen off IGNs comment section.

Btw, the netcode is better. Just because your internet may suck or you keep playing people in siberia or whatever doesn't mean the netcode sucks.

I really liked this review. And because I know Max reads these threads, a sincere compliment for giving this game a fair review.

It really mirrored my critique of DK's review in that you can give a nice review based on the 'Available Content', but it's difficult (impossible) to give it an appropriate letter grade based on the 'Missing Content'.

And I think it was a great idea to illustrate that point. So great job Max.

I agree that from what's present to judge the game looks really promising. No doubt that continued support would make this game excellent. Time will tell if that happens quickly enough to entice people beyond the Hardcore market.

Because without casual dollars, and being system exclusive, it'll have a hard time staying alive.

Watching Max and FiltieRich playing against one another made me wonder how the game will evolve over time. The game has an interesting dynamic.

gotta remember that this game promotes the rush down. KI has always been a rush down game. however this has the same meta game as street fighter.

some people think that this is a break dead knock off, but that's NO WHERE near the case here. you still have to make the right guesses with combo breakers, you constantly have to switch your combos around, you have the reset game, gotta contemplate if you want to cash out your damage early or if you got for the nasty mixup to get more damage.

There is a lot to this game that has the potential lasting power as street fighter does. As long as we keep supporting it. not to mention Seasons of characters that that take time to completely polished and balanced before releasing. this game can live. I hope it does.

No problem Ive been reading your comments regarding gameplay in certain KI articles and ive noticed your getting making a point to get a good understanding of how the game plays before you even play it. Lol in other words you wont be as lost as I was when I first started playing it.

I really do wish this game wasn't a console exclusive and me personally I prefer playing fighting games on sony consoles ive always have. I prefer the d-pad and ive just been playing fighting games for so lone on sony consoles and a good chunk of the FGC has also.

As for this game being an exclusive hurting it I agree it isn't a good thing but im pretty damn sure this game will do well as far as fighting games go. Just look at games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice those games would've sold well even if they were exclusive.

Hell SFIV would've also sold well if it was also an exclusive but its almost always better to be multiplat. Just like console exclusive fighting games in the past though like tekken im sure KI will have some solid sales. Its easy to pick up and play while at the same time it has a lot to offer advanced players.

In fact im sure more casuals will be into this game compared to other fighters just due to the fact of how great the game looks and how they can start doing decent stuff right from the beginning. The other thing that's going to help is its the only current next gen fighter besides Injustice which is a remake.

The game has a great chance of staying alive for a while in my opinion. I even picked up the KI guide today (granted I got a discount and only paid 24.95 instead of 34.95 because there is no way im paying 34.95) because im enjoying the game so much. Itll be entertaining to read and it does come with the digital guide which is going to be constantly update when the game does.

I guess what im trying to say is initially I was just interested in the game but after playing it for a while its really grown on me.

I have been an immense KI fan since #1 and would absolutely get this game if it came to PS4, but I had a funny thought today: does anybody else feel like the combo breaker system in KI is essentially an intense game of rock, paper, scissors?? LOL

#23
BlitzN said on November 29, 2013 at 5:12 p.m.

Lol, no... Rock, paper, scissors is a random guessing game. Combo breakers you can guess but the system is built on reads. The kind of quick reads equivalent to reading cover 3, or a slider. You don't have long but there are dead give aways, if you know what your doing.

TheTHCGamer said on November 29, 2013 at 6:21 p.m.

Exactly if you really study a characters attacks you will know which combo breaker to use. Its just like every fighting game you have to learn and memorize how to counter your opponents attack.

If you guess wrong your going to be put in a lockout state which means you wont be able to perform a combo breaker for a short period of time. Don't get me wrong I still haven't or taken the time to learn each characters linkers.

There are players who have however already started too and have memorized some of the characters linkers which means they don't need to guess. So yea when your first starting out without any practice there will be some guessing involved but once you know what linkers your opponent is doing then your going to have a lot easier time breaking combos.

So what you then need to do when your on the offensive is switch between light, medium, and heavy attacks with each combo to keep your opponent guessing. Then there are manuals which you can break just like linkers but only during there hitstop.

Then there are counter breakers which you can preform if you believe your opponent is going to perform a combo breaker to extend your combo. Im not going even going to get into the rest but you get the idea its a lot more complicated then just guessing which combo breaker to use.

Max may actually be one of the best KI players at the moment. It is obviously still pretty early, but he looks impressive. I hope we get to see him enter some tournaments...

I don't think this game is as big of a hit as everyone planned on it being. We will see what kind of crowds it pulls in the future. Max is good at the game for sure, kinda like perfect legend is good at MK.

#27
perfume said on November 30, 2013 at 2:22 a.m.

No. Don't insult an actual pro player like that. Max has had plenty of time with the game before release, that's why he's decent right now. Once the good players get their hands on the game and flesh it out and bring it more tech,Max will go back into irrelevance.

I do quite a few people who own a Xbox one have and lots of the don't really play fighters. I think KI is doing just fine there's no reason to think otherwise.
