Asking users to disable their ad blocking software, and why it's important for EventHubs

Asking users to disable their ad blocking software, and why it's important for EventHubs If you're not blocking ads on EventHubs, you can safely ignore this news post, but if you're curious what this all about, feel free to check out the post below.

As you may or may not know, advertisements are how we keep EventHubs running. The majority of our readers understand this and support the site by not blocking ads on it.

Unfortunately, we've noticed a growing trend of people blocking ads on our site (and on others), which does impact our ability to create new features, and offer things like tournament coverage, game and character stats, news updates and more.

We've put in some new things to encourage people to unblock ads on this site (and hopefully all of the places you frequent in the FGC, or other sites you want to support). We offered a brief FAQ and some tutorials on how to unblock ads on the site after the jump.

Template error: There is an error one of this page's template tags: 'adblockurl_tags' is not a valid tag library: Template library adblockurl_tags not found, tried django.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,django.contrib.admin.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,myproject.articles.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,myproject.news.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,django.contrib.comments.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,django.contrib.humanize.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,django.contrib.flatpages.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,linaro_django_pagination.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,myproject.artwork.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,myproject.account.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,myproject.livestreams.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,myproject.mod_comments.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,myproject.games.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,relationships.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,userena.contrib.umessages.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,flag.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,poll.templatetags.adblockurl_tags,myproject.tiersvote.templatetags.adblockurl_tags

Well. I kept getting random sound clips for toothpaste commercials and videos autoplaying out of nowhere, ad looping etc....so I had put noscript on. If you had sensible ads I would gladly take it off.

Disabled mine, but I wish some of the ads weren't so intrusive. Ads that automatically start playing audio and video are annoying and probably a big reason ad block is becoming increasingly prevalent

#13

We realise that ads that automatically start playing audio are undesirable, and we're doing our best to make sure that that doesn't happen anymore. Please stay patient with us <3

One thing that is really, really annoying is the "MacKeeper" ad that keeps popping up often and randomly. Those ads that interfere with my browsing are the reason why I kept my adblock on.

#20
Gpop said on May 20, 2013 at 6:24 p.m.

I got you, but if there's any autoplay ads I'll let you know because those were the main reason why I got adblock in general (not from here, just internet in general)

Turned off adblock, refreshed the page got this:

Back on until the terribly obtrusive ads on the site are addressed. No issues with side ads, but this is a deal-breaker.

#33
NyuBomber said on May 20, 2013 at 6:36 p.m.

I don't mind ads on websites.

What I do mind are ridiculously intrusive ads that autoplay videos and force a layout change of the page by pushing everything down while the ad expands. And pop-ups, of course.

Keep it simple and out of the way and I will keep AdBlock off for EH.

#34
nox000 said on May 20, 2013 at 6:36 p.m.

#35
EG2 said on May 20, 2013 at 6:36 p.m.

What about the ones that don't play, but pop up and obscure the screen unless you click to close them. Those are the real nuisance ads.

If your going to have your ad blocker on that's fine but do some of you really need to be childish about it by posting that your not going to do it. I seriously think eventhubs needs to have an age limit for there site and regardless if people lie about it'll still let people know the mindset this site expects. Not only that but if someone says something on the site is inappropriate for kids then you guys can turn around and say well you have to be a certain age to be on the site in the first place. It doesn't necessarily have to be 18 and up however some of these kids need to find another site to go too.

We should be happy that this site doesn't charge us especially with all the new content we receive on a regular basis. I mean it can't be easy and I personally love coming to eventhubs to get my fighting games news and info. I'm not going to lie I feel eventhubs has the best layout when it comes to finding out new info for fighting games. Keep the good work eventhubs and thanks for not charging us.

I don't block ads, but I'd like them more if they didn't expand and play audio/video when you scroll over to scroll down the page. It can keep repeating several times sometimes. I understand it is not up to you who and what type of ads as you are just trying to support your website and keep it funded, it's just annoying.

#46
shinra358 said on May 20, 2013 at 6:47 p.m.

For comments about Flash ads, let me point you to what Destructoid had to say on the matter...

"Just disable the flash ads"
[Updated April 11]:

If I've not made this clear, let me spell it out: I don't necessarily ever want Flash ads on the site, expanding ads, hovering ads, audio ads, gutter ads -- I didn't build this site to have ads on it. Those ads are a means to an end: they support a staff. By removing Flash ads it would mean removing half of my writing team. You simply can't have GIF or Static ads at our size and expect to keep a time of this size fed. It's just not realistic. Allowing even semi-obtrusive ads (rollover to expand) is a difficult reality to explain, and one that I admittedly stumbled over while on an NPR talk show.

I appreciate the well-meaning comments proposing that we simply remove Flash ads, but if it were that easy I would have done that long ago. In the words of our ad rep, they make us "competitive". That is to say I haven't fired anyone in the last seven years over the matter.

Advertisers are also in a desperate position to use the web to advertise their products inexpensively. We're talking thousands of people the cost of a fast food value meal. Ad agencies are even more desperate: they're trying to keep their clients happy and also win more business by wining design awards. The most cunning (or annoying) ads win the clicks. Go punch a monkey.

While we can afford to turn away auto-expanding and auto-audio ads, we simply cannot turn away all interactive ad units. There isn't a professional ad sales company that would take us as a client. I'd lose half my team, and there's no data that supports a mass ad-block appeal would lift even if we did. Let's also not be idealistic: there are plenty of Internet users who hate ads on principle or wants ultimate non-tracking privacy will eventually just use a different ad-blocker that doesn't have a whitelist policy. Just skim through the comments and you'll see that some people are above appeals, no matter how much we bend the advertising industry.

If you're big enough you're in a better position to try this, though. Indies, not so much.

#52
Catalyst said on May 20, 2013 at 6:52 p.m.

@shinra358

Yes, we still get money even if people aren't clicking. Most advertising works this way, not all, though.

CPM = viewing gets you money.
CPC = clicking gets you money.

The ads you see on Twitch and other video sites are typically CPM, but you will see CPCs come up as well. CPCs are often text.

#53
MentalFloss said on May 20, 2013 at 6:53 p.m.

I know I'm running adblock software and I don't need a big ass banner telling me I am.

As other have said, only reason I keep it on for this site is the completely intrusive ads.

@50 when you click an ad banner to "close" it how do you know you didn't just actually give it the okay to install some BS onto your computer. This is probably the main reason I have to remove viruses and malware from 90% of the computers I work on.

I've been running EventHubs for close to 7 years now, and none of our ads should do what you just described. At least during my time running the site, I've never seen an ad do what you just described.

I know there are less reputable sites who do that kind of thing though, but I'd hope you'd whitelist our site and other FGC sites who don't run those kind of ads.

To the people that refuse to disable the blockers, you do realize that you can unblock the pages you choose to support and block the ones you don't right? This very article shows you how.

Everyone expects to get everything for free, and this site is free. You don't pay for anything. Least you can do is scroll past ads or wait 3-5 seconds on a Youtube video if you support the author.

Content creators can't be expected to hand this community everything and get absolutely nothing in return forever. Eventually it'll all go away.

#75
TorTorVega said on May 20, 2013 at 7:40 p.m.

So my options are gigantic distracting ads that move, or a static box above the relevant content that is ugly but not all that intrusive?

I'd gladly throw money at you to avoid advertisements. But in all honesty if I'm going to get guilted into viewing advertisements that distract from the content that I'm here to see, I can always get FGC information from another source even though I quite enjoy this one and it's features.

I mean look at the screenshot posted earlier in the comments. Even if you take out the full screen advertisement that isn't supposed to be there, 30% of the rest of the screen is covered by two advertisements. Advertisements that aren't even relevant to the content mind you.

It is ironic you mention this because I have ad block off on your site, and in the last month your ads have become intrusive. The stupid mackeeper full screen POP UP (what is this 2005) shows up when I click on any story. Then you have flash ads with sound auto play which is also very poor practice. You could make plenty more money with CPC ads targeted to your demographic (You are a niche site! It is easy here!) I do not want to have a full sound ad play for some household product. Not to mention you run many other niche sites through Gorilla Media.

Pop unders are really bad, and sound playing ads are not good either. But otherwise thanks for this resource!

@specialp

Sorry, the MacKeeper ad should be going away here VERY soon. We just reported that one to our ad network after we tracked down all of the details we needed.

"You could make plenty more money with CPC ads targeted to your demographic."

This is unfortunately, very untrue. We ran mostly targeted CPC ads for a good long time, and they didn't do much for us.

"Then you have flash ads with sound auto play which is also very poor practice."

That shouldn't be happening. When you see an ad like that, please contact us (http://www.eventhubs.com/forms/contac...) and let us know with more details about the ad.

We'll try and do our best to make sure you don't regret that choice. Please let us know if any ads get out of hand. We already worked with a user today on the MacKeeper one and we don't plan on stopping there.
