Seth Killian: Street Fighter 4 was initially the worst thing I've ever seen - Killian's involvement in SFxT was limited to early planning meetings

Seth Killian: Street Fighter 4 was initially the worst thing I've ever seen - Killian's involvement in SFxT was limited to early planning meetings Edge Magazine recently sat down with Sony Santa Monica's Seth Killian in which he talks on various subject. Killian gives us a bit of insight on his life before being hired by Capcom, his experience with Street Fighter 4, his present employment at Sony Santa Monica and more.

Seth mentions that when originally shown the early wireframe for Street Fighter 4, it was the worst thing he'd ever seen. Even though that was the case, Killian still opted to take the job.

The next year, however, the reaction was more positive; Christian Svensson, now Capcom’s senior vice president, had just joined the company and wanted more engagement with the Street Fighter community – meaning people like Killian. A job offer soon followed. He turned it down, not wanting to waste ten years of academic philosophy. “And that’s when they told me, ‘We’ve greenlit a game called Street Fighter IV, and here’s a really early wireframe.’ I was like, ‘Wow, this looks terrible,’” he laughs. “‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’”

Seth also talks about how his involvement in Street Fighter X Tekken was limited to the early stages of planning. He states that by the time the game reached balancing and gameplay, he was on his way out from Capcom.

Killian’s role in the development of Street Fighter X Tekken was limited to early planning meetings. After release, players drifted away from SFXT, its intricate core combo system undermined by balance-breaking DLC. “I spent a lot of my focus early on in SFXT pushing for some different possible implementations of the microtransaction model, maybe a free-to-play thing,” he says. “By the time it got to balancing and gameplay, I was a little bit less involved – it was near the end of my time there.”

Well if his involvement in Capcom was getting less and less, and Sony Santa Monica gave him an oppurtunity with more involvment , who can blame him if he jumps ship ? He probably felt more underappreciated and less utilised the more it dragged on.

But the thing I find funny is he still gets hired by Capcom after saying the early work of Steet Fighter 4 looked awful .... lol

@10 Well working for any company is not all about kissing arses. Sometimes you can get hired or promoted in a company just by being blunt honest. usually thats what they are looking for.

If a company can't be humble enough to except honest criticism, they cannot expect to do well. Im sure that is why they hired Seth because he was basically on the outside looking in. You want people like that around you, not a bunch of yes men.

@ 13

I've played several of the older games, and they all have their fair share of BS too.

CVS2 Sagat has the hotfoot super nonsense, Sakura and Bison have 70% combos off a touch. It's my favourite fighting game, but it still has its faults.

SFA3 gives everyone full meter right from the start, so the first hit is insanely important

SF3 doesn't have as much BS, but it's really imbalanced

They're all great games, but every game has system mechanics that don't appeal to everyone.

BTW, if the opponent SRK FADC's, you've just cut their offensive / defensive potential by quite a bit, so it's not quite as free as you make it out to be.

SF4 is what reignited the whole fighting game genre. If it wasn't for SF4 there would be maybe 50 people who gave a F about fighting games. 95% of the people on this website wouldn't be here if it wasn't for SF4.
Meanwhile SFxT is still trying to prove it's worth 20$ and Playstation Who-Cares Stars is already dead.

"After release, players drifted away from SFXT, its intricate core combo system undermined by balance-breaking DLC."

- SFxT combo system isn't intricate, it's the most basic combo system of this decade. Balance braking DLC? What? The problem with DLC is how it was released, not how balanced it was.

truth be told what made me not want to play SfxTK was all the random hating on the gem system and the early game glitches which they ironed out... some of the characters got some stupid nerfs like julia, Xiaoyu, and Raven.. however the game is very fun....

Honestly all these people need to step away from games, they're getting too worked up. All I can say is the internet itself is nothing but a cesspool, the internet bandwagons & trolls bring nothing but imbalance to human life itself.

When comes to a true gamer, it should always be about love for the game you care about and not talk trash about another game. Almost everyone lacks that personality. All they do is hate on pointless things, bash on games or certain peoples opinion, and don't know when to stay away from the game if they have a dislike.

The Internet in general lacks a civilized balance when comes to people, sometimes its better if certain people were controlled under certain conditions that parts limits their freedom. The Internet people have too much freedom which at this point all you get are arrogant, narrowminded, childish people with lack of proper judgment.

@55 Someone's butthurt about something.
@62 SF4's been getting all the hate. The only reason it slowed down is because the kids found something new to hate on, which is SFxT. Now that everyone's starting to like it again, they can resume their hate on SF4. This trend will continue until SF5 drops, then they will hate on that game and praise SF4, and talk about how SF4 was the BEST, and that SF5 is for scrubs and babies. This is how the internet works. #55 is a prime example typical internet behavior.

@64 Why do you call EVERYONE butthurt that doesnt agree with you what are you 12? Its not like people are saying i hate that game and not giving valid reasons why they hate the game. I personally feel SFxT couldve been a lot better but to reasons unknown (maybe it war rushed) it ended up being mediocre.

First of all the balance in that game is atrocious and you dont have to be an expert at the game to figure that one out. Second lots of fighting games have on disc DLC sold as DLC but never has a fighting game done that to the extent of SFxT. Those 2 examples already show why the game was a PR and gameplay disaster.

I remember when the game was first announced and aspects like gems werent even announced. Less focus on gems and more focus on gameplay/character balance would helped the game go a long way. The roster in my opinion is amazing but whats the point when a good portion of the cast is noticeably weaker then the rest.

SFIV is a great game but lets not sit here saying its the best fighting game ever. I know it might be nostalgia but in my opinion that crown should go to the SF2 games which started the fighting game craze. Every SOLID fighting game has gameplay aspects why a person might prefer it over another.

Also illness690 it might seem SFIV got a lot of hate but thats because its the big boy on the block. Heres the other side of things though what other fighting game gets featured more on streams or at tournaments? None so SFIV got and continues to get more love than any other fighting game released this gen.

A lot of people like to hate on popular games just to troll and get some attention. Others are stuck in the past and want every game to play like they did ten years ago; they are the dinosaurs of the gaming age.

I don't know why people complain about the character models in SF4, a real fighter would indeed be muscular like any real athlete, not look like a bunch of scrawny emo looking wimps. Ironic since most gamers ARE scrawny wimps or fat slobs as opposed to being muscular and athletic. Most have something to do with the muliple hours locked indoors and minimal physical activity.

Went online, played about 10 matches, netcode felt absolutely horrendous, matches were boring as hell, and after seeing the overall speed and meta game, I just said fu*k it. Haven't touched the game in like a month. I don't hate the game, but I just think its a very boring game to watch or play.

street fighter 3 is the best game they have done. They just had quit superstf 2 turbo , and jump to sf3 , and the alpha games are just good for 1 player, sf4 is a good game, but the jump from sf3 to sf4 almost feels like a step back, a little bit. They should make SF5 more like sf3, with a much better design averall. Just my opinion.
