Richard Nguyen: In SoCal no one wants to win in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, NorCal is the best region

The guys at Level Up have uploaded a new interview with Richard Nguyen. In the interview he discusses his thoughts SoCal's Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 players, in particular he mentions how the players do not want to win and that many of them playing for different reasons.

thats the problem with marvel,70% the cast is either situational/another character could do exactly what (insert chararacter here) can do but better or complete garbage

Much as I respect Nguyen, i really hope LLND, Royal Flush, etc. DONT take his advice, Marvel is getting more and more repetitive to watch. Already all matches are played on one stage and a majority of matches with 15 or so characters.

It's not the easy route, but on the slim chance that there are some undiscovered broken tech among the unused characters, I respect those guys for choosing that route. And like #2 said, as a spectator, it's so much more interesting to see low tiered characters playing rather than vergils, dooms, and zeros going at it.

as a viewer, I agree, because LLND and Royal Flush do great things with their characters. but from a player perspective, this does hurt the level of competition in SoCal. how do you figure out how to take down top-tier teams if a large amount of what you play against are low-tier teams?

@6

yeah, the stream chat went nuts when Lud and Demon Hyo played on stream with Chun-Li.

@2

I hope they do take the advice, help evolve the game. I like seeing the game played at a high level rather than seeing some cool gimmicks that do nothing for pushing the game and inevitably fail. LLND and Royal Flush's team are already irrelevant this early on in the game, it is nothing more than novelty after a certain point.

I would rather see a high level MSP in Marvel 2 than a decent player using low tiers, because those low tiers aren't pushing anything, after a certain point it just isn't playing the game right.

#2 I agree COMPLETELY.

I can see that people want to win. Okay. But no one is going to get a kick out of you winning as much as you if you play with a Top Tier team with predictable gameplay.
just like Chris G, he doesn't even look excited when he wins at this point.

I played Marvel because of the roster and playing with comic book characters. It's the closest thing to playing with action figures that actually come to life.

Out of ALL the Doom players there are only 2 that I enjoy watching and that's MarlinPie and El Gato.

I honestly think we should do the opposite of what Richard Nguyen is saying and expand on new characters in tournaments.

I respect these guys for playing what they want too. Playing high tier doesn't mean you'll win, Viscant switched to high tier and he still get's slapped around. Noel tried switching to Vergil, and got bopped and went right back to his old team. Ray Ray tried to replace Ryu with Viper and got stomped, before going back to Ryu. The higher tier characters just may not fit their play style.

Richard is wrong, the low tier characters need to be played more to discover what potential they really have to expand the game. We don't have shortage of Vergil and Zero players to find tech for them.

This has been known for a while. The only way to win in marvel is to pick the top tier broken stuff. I don't care how many people are bored of watching the same characters. All they're doing is watching, they aren't competing for money. Players are there to win money, not entertain stream monsters with character variety. LLND & Royalflush are amazing with their teams, but if they wanna win they need to pick a top tier. That's it. They will never win anything with those teams. Screw what viewers wanna see, play to win. Pick a top tier. Win that money.

It's called being "conditioned"; if they're used to certain things and options relative to one console, it will make the transition to the other consoles as well regardless if the latter console had the same initial reasons the former had for its choice in selection/options.

i feel pretty much the inverse of this. how do you find out what's top tier without actually exploring your options? picking vergil isn't playing "what's good", it's playing what already works. getting away with things isn't exactly the same thing as playing smart, and evolving the game involves finding out what else could potentially work. i applaud anyone who puts their efforts toward that end. show me what else marvel 3 can be. if years down the line teams like LLND's have still gotten nowhere then maybe you and richard have a point. until then do what feels good and make the best of it.

I can respect those that give themselves that extra challenge of overcoming a weaker characters faults. And it is very exciting to see, maybe some streams of no top tier character type of thing would be awesome.

It really isn't about entertaining anyone. It's about pursing the goals you have set for yourself. If you goal is to do as best you can with low tier you can play modok but if you goal is to win on the world stage you might want to take advantage of the much much better tools the game offers.

Playing competitively has always been about winning and improving yourself as a player.

Somewhere along the way the mindset has changed to "play to entertain"

Players aren't hungry and just content w/ getting 3 letters following their name and settling for mediocrity.

#24
analogos's avatar
analogos said on March 8, 2013 at 6 p.m.

i'm pretty sure they're playing to entertain themselves, which should be at least part of anyone's motivation. nobody doesn't want to win, it's a matter of how you want to win.

it's honestly not much different from whether or not you're a rushdown style or keepaway player. saying one or the other is the only legitimate way to "play to win" is naive and dishonest about the way these games work.

dieminion has taken guile further than almost anyone else could even hope to imagine. was that a mistake too? gief, gen and hakan won tournaments in 2012. were they all idiots too?

richard's outlook is too limiting to be universally prescriptive.

I cannot believe you guys are actually condoning that type of behavior,regarding the future of Marvel.You can be hungry and play the character you like.

That you will need to know extensive knowledge of the matchup and have nerves of steel and swift reflexes? Definitely....

It's not about the streams."Freak" them for all I care.....It's all about the potential that the players may be missing because of all the Vergil's and Doom's running around.Players like LLND and SkinHoff inspire lots of players,scared of trying their favorite characters due to the awkwardness of their mechanics,to branch out and expand the game more.

Don't be like that,guys.The game's way too young and you think you have found everything the game has to offer? Nope...not even a bit.

#32
illness690's avatar
illness690 said on March 8, 2013 at 6:35 p.m.

@32 You can be hungry as you want playing the character you like, but if it isn't top tier/broken, you're not winning in marvel. This isn't AE where almost any character can be viable. Every Marvel devolved into just a handful of characters being top tier and used in tournaments. UMVC3 will be no different. It's just the nature of the game. I welcome it. Every fighting game is like this. Players play a variety of character at the beginning, but as time goes on, the numbers of characters players play slowly dwindles as the top tier/broken stuff gets exposed. Then they all flock to it because they want to win. Why should it be any different now?

@33. lol at any character being viable in AE. but i digress.

why can't there be room for both types of players? the showmen and the warriors? if some people just wanna play to style and do fancy stuff, let it rock. that's entertaining as hell. if you want the extra challenge of not picking derpy stuff, that's also cool. if you just want that paper, by all means, pick a top tier. we all paid or 40 bucks for the game to do whatever the hell we want with it.

granted, if you're not picking top tier, you have to accept that you're at a serious disadvantage and pretty much just a pot monster.

Don't encourage people to tier whore. The best way to help a game grow is to have variety. Not only does it give all the players experience against the whole cast, it also helps to expand the game by discovering all the possibilities for all the characters in it. By defaulting to top tier, you are slowing down the progress of the game in exchange for doing something that is working right now, and in turn, falling behind other regions. I do believe a Joe/Frank/Raccoon player floored you a couple years back.

@25
Dieminion/Guile has won more tournaments than any of those characters in 2012 so it's not like he was struggling in the US. (Why anyone thinks Gen is low tier is beyond me.)

According to him though, the reason for his wins is just that everyone else in the east coast other than Wolfkrone and Sanford are bad in the game. He realised this after he went over to Japan where everyone plays to win and is really good.

So yeah, at least in the Japan where the marvel players play for fun, they still developed tech to beat Tokido's phoenix. It works out well against f champ as well.

Are people in the east coast trying hard enough to develop tech to beat Chris G or Dieminion? That's really Sanford's point.

I would just say pick whoever you play the best with. If you bustin ass with that team, chances are you will probably bust ass in competitive play, too.

Real talk the issue with SoCal is that they lack a F Champ/Bum/Yipes who is willing to show leadership and take charge of the community. Only Super Arcade and Alex Valle seems to organize anything and those guys love to push to support the P4A/KOF/Tekken/SFxT/VF5 community at the expense of the game that made them big. J Wong is supposed to be a pro player with fighting games as his only job, but what exactly has he done for the SoCal community? Seems that he would rather spend time on Dragonvalle and SAO. Contrast this to F Champ who organize events and push to get good players to play in his house, and it's not hard to see why NorCal has become stronger than SoCal.

As a spectator, Marvel is just boring to watch; always see the same characters, always the same combos. However, it was actually pretty entertaining to watch yesterday's (today's) Japanese tournament with Abegen and a few others who didn't play top tier characters and still did well. Honestly though, if so many people actually went to the local tourney and plays non-top tier, why are they not put on stream more often? I don't care if they lose to someone else who is also playing low tier or whatever. I'm tired of the same people playing the same team doing the same combos.

Can't help but laugh at a lot of this.
First, lots of better players use alt teams while going through pools and still blast through opponents. Second, people like Kusoru DESTROY at tournaments where people don't have experience against their setups because of too much tier-whoring. Third, the 'tiers' in Marvel aren't set in stone. There's still too much undiscovered tech - anybody remember Seth Killian talking about Jill from vanilla Marvel and saying there were some things that would've made her and Shuma the most boken characters in the game? Nobody found it because a lot of people dismissed them offhand as being weak.
