Skullgirls' Team Fortress 2 Leviathan hat not being released for now, Lab Zero trying to find an opening in Valve's schedule to salvage it

Lab Zero's CEO, Peter Bartholow, has posted a short press release giving some details on the Leviathan Team Fortress 2 hat that was promoted in the Squigly Crowdfunding campaign. Unfortunately, Valve informed Lab Zero that they don't have the cycles to accommodate the Skullgirls TF2 hat.

We’ve received word from Valve on the Leviathan Team Fortress 2 hat, and have informed us that the Team Fortress 2 team “just doesn’t have the cycles to accommodate the Skullgirls TF2 hat.”

We’re naturally disappointed, and understand that many of you will be, too. Nix’s early model was looking solid, and we were also really excited for the Big Band hat/item concept he was proposing, too.

So how did we get here?
We announced on a recent stream that we intended to make TF2 hats, thinking that didn’t count as 100% confirmation. People were excited and the story took on a life of its own, and we felt it would be hard to go back on that. Given that there were a handful of recent and upcoming releases that featured promotional hats, we took a chance and included it in the campaign. At the time we felt confident that getting approval would not be a problem, but obviously we were wrong.

We haven’t given up – since the PC version and beta are still a few months away, we are currently investigating to see if the Team Fortress 2 team will have an opening in their schedule between now and then to see if we can salvage this.

We’re also simultaneously investigating alternative digital items to replace the Leviathan hat, and hope we’ll be able find something as desirable if not more so. Of course, in the interest of not repeating the same mistake, we won’t discuss what those items are quite yet.

In the event that any or all of these items are approved, they will all be awarded to anyone at the “Backer” ($30) level or higher, regardless of what the Perks said at the time of your order.

So as of now, we can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to honor the TF2 hat or any other digital items at this time. We never had any intention of misleading you, and I regret and take full responsibility for the situation.

If the hat drove your decision to contribute, please feel free to contact support@indiegogo.com to have your contribution refunded.

Sincerely,
Peter Bartholow

It is disappointing but there is still hope. I just want PC version to be on steam and for BigBand to get funded, he sounds really cool.

Just so you know, they're also considering Skullgirls cosmetics for Dota 2, like a Leviathan hook for Pudge.

Don't personally think they'll make it as Valve seems to be kinda strict with Dota 2 cosmetics (they must not alter a character's silhouette and color schemes nor contrast with the game's lore), but who knows.

i actually thought they were releasing actual Leviathan hats at first, so i was a bit disappointed when i read closer. but this sucks for the TF2 guys, hope they find a solution.

Should be noted they would most likely replace the TF2 hat incentive with some other digital reward. They also added higher reward tiers as well. Anyway, props to them owning up immediately instead of being sneaky and making fake promises to the TF2 players. They even offered options for a refund if you spent $30 solely for a hat. Thats more honesty then I can say then alot other groups *coughs GearBox

Other News Update revealed that Another Stage thats independent from the Campaign stretch goals is coming called the "River King Casino" which naturally means more Michiru Yamane music.

Damn. This probably would've made me start playing. At least for a little bit. Anyways at least the funding is still goin strong and Hooligan is right about that extra stage thing. Seems like it is independent of funding and is gonna happen.

I really hope nobody would look at what has gone into this game and withdraw their support based on this. They may yet get the hat, anyway. Don't like TF2 myself, though so if there's some alternative coming, then that's awesome.

(The new stage is for the MAXIMUM SPIDERS, I mean donors - since they get to design an NPC, they have to be in a stage..the NEW one!

Also PLEASE PLEASE DOTA 2 Skullgirls items. I will give more money, not even lying. The police may have a problem with it, though T-T)

Hope they can work this out since having a TF2 item will give them a nice little boost to their sales considering that TF2 hat collectors will buy any game that comes with free hats.

Considered that this year, so many promo items have been released with TF2 hat related items. So far, Brutal Legend (2 items), Bit.Trip presents..Runner 2 (1 item), The Cave (3 items) and Bioshock Infinite(8 items), and now Tomb Raider with 3 items.

It's already March and already TF2 has a bunch of stuff. Can't blame them.

Can't they just like... hold off and release it sometime later on? Why does every preorder item HAVE to be given out before the game is released?
