EG|Justin Wong's latest column here on EventHubs explores trend setters in different regions in the United States.Every region or area, there will be that person who is the best on their block. That person can also be a trend setter on what the community will use or what does that specific community deem top tier. Knowing this information is extremely important if you like to travel a lot for tournaments or if you are an up and comer player who doesn't know much outside of YOUR community.
Here is a list of examples that you can see what I mean. There may be more players I might have forgotten but you will understand the concept.
Northeast UMVC3 - Morrigan/Doom Territory
Chris G - Morrigan Vergil Doom
Nerdjosh - Morrigan Vergil Doom
JRosa - Morrigan Doom Strider
Dieminion - Viewtful Joe, Dr. Strange, Morrigan
There's a complete archive of Justin Wong's columns here on EventHubs if you're looking to level up your fighting game skills.
You have to include MarlinPie, which area is he from?
That fools Doom has the be THE trendiest Doom there has ever been. What he did with TACs was straight up foolish!
Man...I liked it better when I was one of, like, 10 people around the world who used Morrigan because we just liked the character and felt great when we won a fight with her against the legions of Day 1 Dantes and Weskers, but now that tech came out and everyone wants to get on her.
Day 1 Morrigans for life. :(
I bet there's at least 100000 people currently using Morrigan that will lay claim they started using her 1st.
apologyman if he keeps up that team and wins loads he'll be setting a trend. I agree deiminion saw the potential in morrigan and chris found it in morri/doom. Also chris was an amazing ryu player before ray ray if i remember correctly.I wish justin would play with iron fist more i think he just needs to find a good lock down assist like vajra.
clakey d was the first one on that morrigan ish- back in vanilla but nobody seems to remember this
@13 Combo wasn't the only one, most of team EG used She-Hulk in vanilla around the same time
@15 Justin Wong got the She-Hulk train rolling not Combo and he used her and his Wolverine team depending on the match up nearly the whole of vanilla.
I actually DID use Morrigan back in vanilla... but that was before I even really played. I didn't even know how to fly, TAC, or DHC :P
(Now I use X-23/Doom/Nova)
ChrisG and Dieminion, the good Morrigan players (and it seems like Chris is currently the only one who hasn't got tired of her). Nerdjosh has always been a tech thief who uses the hottest trend in the game without being able to come up with legitimate strategies of his own, while I don't know how JRosa plays... but like #13 said, apparently not good enough to place high consistently in major tourneys, so that guy is a w/e
For those who don't understand the topic, it isn't discussing the "legitimacy" of the players who pick said characters, it's simply pointing out the popularity of them. For example, midwest has the Dantes, and Norcal has Viper/Strider, etc. Lets be serious here, every region has Doom saturation. He fits well on any team like bacon on sandwiches.
@16
i don't know if thats true i'd say he got people trending akuma and combo was spencer/she-hulk.
Justin is poor to use as an example cause he plays at tournies with different chars iron fist/felicia/she hulk but went back to wolvie (team eg)
he won a tournament with dan in sf. I'm talking character specialists like fooblat-Haggar/combo-she hulk/champ-dorm/dieminion-morrigan, viewtiful joe/fanatic-MSS/marlinpie doom, viper, amy/ clockwork -doom,strider.
people like that set trends justin tries to show good characters sometimes people just don't pay attention it's different.
