Last Friday, we reported that IGN had cancelled the IPL6 eSports tournament. Today, we get IGN's official statement on the cancellation.
We regret to inform you that we have decided to cancel our next public competition event, IPL 6 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, March 28-31.
When we launched IPL two years ago, the eSports landscape was very different with far fewer events than we have now. Now there are more tournaments than ever before competing for people's time and attention, so we're no longer in a position to commit the resources required to run another major independent event.
You should also know that we are working on finding a new home for the IPL team and IGN will continue to broadcast partner tournaments in the future.
The past two years have been incredible, and we thank every one of the millions of people who tuned in to our events and coverage over that time. Your support has been tremendous and we could not have done this without you. We went from $5,000 online StarCraft 2 tournaments to one of the world’s best and largest eSports events.
If you had planned on attending, head over to IGN for details on refunds.

@6, actually I WAS referring to streaming views. EVO reaches about 100K views and I'm guessing IPL had other more popular games that attracted more viewers than most FG tourneys. But still, I hardly think that all IPL events combined over the course of 2 years broke 2 million views. If they did, they wouldn't have to cancel. That's actually what I find strange.
Did anyone ever take IPL seriously? God knows I didn't.
for real wtf Capcom... are they really saying they're done?
@16,
What #10 was talking about was concurrent viewers.
Yes, I was referring to the highest # of views per session, but I wouldn't say "millions" of views because a) 100K is the highest they get per session and that's only top 8 of the big events, and b) adding up the number of views throughout the tournament would be inaccurate because for all we know, those could be the same viewers, that only ever max out at 100,000 unique viewers. Saying it's "millions" of viewers would be a gross misrepresentation. Only big sporting events can attract that kind of viewership, not esports, and certainly not fighting games, at least not yet.
@10 What's the use of getting 2 million stream monsters who are happy with their free stream? And when they made 1 million bucks in losses from their last event?

Awww man, the fighting game content was REALLY REALLY entertaining! Such a waste to see it go so soon :(
Only 3/4 months ago did this seem like amazing progress for fighting games
Matt Dahlgren interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HK0CC...
and I think nearly everyone can agree it going to be great to have that level of exposure and what it could bring to fighting games outside of the community, so I personally find this all to be bullcrap on IGNs part.
Ab-so-lute WANK!
"Now there are more tournaments than ever before competing for people's time and attention, so we're no longer in a position to commit the resources required to run another major independent event."
This is evasive and dishonest language. They had already committed to it, and then decided not to do it, leaving a lot of people in the lurch.
This new owner just doesn't care and/or doesn't know wtf they're doing.
Then again, they made massive losses on the first street fighter event, so maybe it's not very profitable...or something.
Just look on the bright side. Now top players don't have to choose between this and Final Round.
Far as i heard no fighting games were headlining ipl6
