Report: IGN cancels IPL6 eSports tournament

Report: IGN cancels IPL6 eSports tournament GameSpot has received several reports that IGN is planning on canceling their upcoming IPL6 eSports tournament. While no Capcom fighting games were headlining this event, this could potentially be bad news for the fighting game community's future with IPL.

IGN was recently purchased by ZiffDavis, but they mentioned in a memo they were looking for a new buyer for IPL.

While no official statements have been made that IPL6 is canceled, a number of things are strongly pointing in that direction, including:

• Sponsors of the IGN ProLeague event have told GameSpot the products they sent over for sponsorship are being returned to them.

• The IPL website removed links on the front page to reserve hotel rooms for the March 28-31, 2013 weekend.

• Korean-based league OnGameNet said that the IPL6 League of Legends Korean qualifiers have been cancelled due to change in management policies and financial difficulties.

eSports teams, players and fans from around the globe have reserved plane tickets and hotels for this event, some of which cannot be refunded, depending on the way such things were purchased.

This information doesn't offer a decisive stance on the future of IPL and their involvement with the fighting game community, but this news doesn't bode well.

Hit the jump for a GameSpot video where they discuss the situation in a bit more detail.

Mike Ross' Neighborhood was the greatest thing to happen for FG E Sports. Street Fighter and possibly Marvel would've been very lucrative for IPL as well. They really f*cked this one up.

while I have a smidge of hope that the FGC can overcome this, recent events within the community suggest that competitive players are some of the most immature SOBs I have ever seen and doesnt even deserve Pro League's backing

but dont you see? nothing can stop the FGC if the players love what they do and people love watching them play it will just keep growing.

i was watching the level/up runback stream last night and there were still 3000+ viewers at 4:30 in the morning. ...tho i do agree with the immature part. thats definitely true.

Are they not going to do even ONE TOURNAMENT with the Capcom games they just signed a deal to feature?

Wtf/Fail.

Maybe featuring the Capcom games would help get them out of the toilet?

@2 So you're saying that pro athletes shouldn't be playing either because they are THE most pampered spoiled immature premadonna's on the planet.

Look people have personalities and if the corporate structure can't handle that fine, they can go. The FGC was alive and well before them and it will be after them. This whole idea of these tourney's being a place for a kid to be is ludicrous so if the sponsors are afraid of what players will do they have completely forgotten who they market games to in the first place.

I'm sure Mike will bounce back with something but this still sucks. I was really enjoying his show. Guess they just didn't know how to manage it, but not highlighting Capcom games is definatley a bad start.

Blame the buyout and Ziff Davis. Same old story--bunch of crusty old suits with no appreciation for anything but money take over and shut down, sell off, and consolidate any division that's not spewing dollars like a firehose. I wouldn't be surprised if IGN as a whole goes down the crapper when this new management starts disrespecting and milking their audience like a cashcow instead of focusing on providing quality content.

This could not of come at a worser time, they were just starting to break into the FGC too. It's a shame but i wish people would of given MLG more of a chance they had plans

@32 people did give MLG a chance, and they ended up absolutely hating the 15 mins of match followed by 45 mins of Starcraft crowd in dubsteps.

I like how esports thinks of themselves as professional and savvy business men throwing the fgc a bone, but in the end it was Mike Ross taking them all for a ride and using them as a vehicle to promote himself.

@34 24 ppl showing up is the community giving them a chance? No that's a joke.

Also LOL @ Capcom choosing to partner up with IPL and they go bust, while still denying MLG to use there games for the past couple years.
