How different does the Wii U version of Smash Bros. look compared to the Wii? Check these out

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • June 30, 2013 at 11:46 a.m. PDT
Curious how the new Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U compares to the old one? Well, you're in luck cause Silent_Ocarina took the time to do just that, grabbing images from Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii, and putting them side-by-side with the official images Nintendo released of the new title currently in development on the Wii U.

You can tell from the images below that not a lot has changed, beyond the increase in resolution and some color, texture tweaks and a few odds and ends, but it's still kind of cool to see these things in tandem. Hit the jump for more images.

Game always looked and played great in my opinion since melee so lets just make sure that netcode is amazing.

^ Agree a good netcode would make things waaaaaay better.

Agreed They made a good netcode for mario cart wii they can do it for this game!

Not a lot has changed? You kiddin'? Look at the close up picture of Link lol

Kinda disagree with Catalyst here, I think the difference is like night and day.

I play on PC 99% of the time though so low res console graphics really stand out for me.

#5
IMainDanHibiki said on June 30, 2013 at 12:01 p.m.

It seems much smoother and definitely higher in quality.

CATALYYYYST

Xykes said on June 30, 2013 at 12:07 p.m.

Catalyst is right.

They just have higher res gameplay and higher res textures. That's why it looks "night and day". But, it's actually not much of a change technically, just better use of texturing and resolution.

(And, Link's hair is better.)

Not a graphics whore by any stretch but if I'm gonna be shellin out serious chop for a new console, it's gotta look noticeably better than the previous one.

There is nothing next gen about the wiiu, so far. New smash still looks cool, tho but so did the last one.

IMainDanHibiki said on June 30, 2013 at 12:26 p.m.

#12
Hexelf said on June 30, 2013 at 12:26 p.m.

The new one is definitely higher resolution but I don't really see how the new one is an improvement. I don't like the new cartoony look compared to the old style but I am sure the game will be great once it is done anyway.

#13
BumblebeeCody said on June 30, 2013 at 12:28 p.m.

Awesome. You can tell buy the graphic style that it doesn't differ as much as Brawl, but you can see improvements.

#14
Gurpwnder said on June 30, 2013 at 12:37 p.m.

I found Mario (and Luigi's) realistic overall design to be hilarious in Melee and Brawl. They give the overalls a jean texture and give them pockets too, but Mario's FINGER is multiple times bigger than the entire pocket.

Glad to see them go back to a more vibrant and cartoony style here.

At 17 keep in mind you are comparing not only metal gear to smash but also a end of life game to coming out at the begging of another consoles life

Batmang said on June 30, 2013 at 1:22 p.m.

Brawl looked good, but this game is looking great. Better lighting, brighter colors. It just looks more polished in general. If you look at the Wii version of Kirby, his shape is kinda jagged. In the Wii U version, he's more circular. That was always a problem I noticed whenever I rendered characters from Brawl snapshots. Also the layers in Link's hair is much more profound. Just imagine how Peach's hair will look. The stages are also looking amazing. There's so much more depth and detail in the backgrounds. Overall I'm definitely excited by the visuals. I just hope the netcode is better, like others have mentioned. I always thought it was funny how some of the FGC says Marvel's netcode is "unplayable." They must've not played Brawl online.

Dravidian said on June 30, 2013 at 1:46 p.m.

The models look a lot different. The art style, color palette, and resolution are pretty different. And remember that time when people were saying that screenshots and youtube vids of mvc3 looked like crap? Remember how much different it looked when it was actually in your systems and shown on your monitors?

I'm getting that vibe. I watched the smash vids on my wii u and it's noticeably better than the youtube vids for some reason. Just imagine how much better the game will look up close and personal.

Also....are people really saying that nothing has changed in the game based on SCREENSHOTS? Like, really?

#22
TheTHCGamer said on June 30, 2013 at 2:05 p.m.

@12 Why just don't take him serious its starting to become a running joke with him trolling every Smash article and I look forward to his insightful comments. Anyone that judges Smash because it doesn't feature badass looking characters or based on how the game plays hasn't put in the time to learn to play the games.

If they did they would realize the games are fun as f***. On a side note why did I picture your avatar saying that to him?

#23
AkumaMishima said on June 30, 2013 at 2:29 p.m.

here are some of the worst pictures of brawl, don't they make SSB WiiU look leagues better by comparison?

No, not really.

#24
cikame said on June 30, 2013 at 2:34 p.m.

The biggest improvement will be the higher resolution.
Interestingly, i assume those comparison shots can be almost identical because non of the animations have changed... like... at all?

OMG, imagine how Peach will look!! Just thinking about her new design (dress, hair, alt. colors) just gets me hype, I can't wait to use her.

The things I'm looking forward to the most are Peach and the NEW characters. I don't mind the returning characters, but being that Sakurai likes to bring in characters from left field (WFT), I just can't wait to see the next crazy character that he's gonna throw in.

Hopefully we get Chrom, Krystal, Mewtwo, Daisy/Rosalina (Maybe both), Tiny or Dixie Kong, Waluigi, Sonic, Tails, Rouge, Amy Rose (not gonna happen, I know :( ), Klonoa, Pac Man, and DAT Hank Hill!!

I agree, but at the same time who cares? PC is so far ahead of consoles in terms of graphical ability. You might as well compare the specs on low-end vehicles from 1990 to a Ferrari from this year.

#28
Kilikan5670 said on June 30, 2013 at 3:20 p.m.

Sure they look similar to each other. These are iconic characters. Unless they're given a reboot(which the majority wouldn't like even though they complain about getting the same stuff with different story all the time) chances are that they're not going to change.

#29
FatMus2 said on June 30, 2013 at 3:21 p.m.

Uh, yeah. The game does not look sginificantly different, especially when the game's in motion. The only thing that stands out for me is Bowser.
I still find it weird they didn't update Link to Skyward Sword when other characters have been updated. There is a good potential for a newer movelist imo with the Whip and Beetle (which could be used like a cross between boomerang and Snake's Nikita missile).

the old looks more alive than the new one. the eyes actually looks at wat the player is trying to hit. nintendo needs to add that.

Is it just me or does Mario's model in Brawl look a bit more detailed? His overalls look like actual denim compared to the Wii U Smash.

The same games over and over. Nintendo's got worse than Activision and EA

#34
Nago said on June 30, 2013 at 4 p.m.

Kinda strange that this will be the first time most of the characters are seen in HD and the majority of them haven't even gotten their own game yet.

#35
TheTHCGamer said on June 30, 2013 at 4:18 p.m.

@36 Do you even play these games? If it was the same game over and over lots of people wouldn't have complained about Brawl regardless if there gripes were valid. Point is game changed enough to the point where a lot of people didn't care for the last version. LMAO same games over and over what games have you been playing?

Lastly news flash every fighting game sequel plays very similar to the one before it. @29 I actually look forward to his comments and find them funny I hope hes not being serious because then that's just sad.

#41
SeriphAngel said on June 30, 2013 at 6:52 p.m.

Not too thrilled with the texturing. While it looks more refined, it does not have as much depth in the garments and scales as Brawl did. Mario's overalls do not even look like denim now in the WiiU version.

#42
Gurpwnder said on June 30, 2013 at 6:54 p.m.

@ 28

I wouldn't get my hopes up, since the characters in Smash are usually the stars / sidekicks of the series.

Outside of Dixie, Daisy and Pac-man, none of those people have ever starred in a Nintendo game (Pac-Man VS was used to highlight GBA to GC connectivity, and he was in the arcade Mario Kart games, so he has a decent chance too).

#43
i208khonsu said on June 30, 2013 at 7:21 p.m.

I think this just further proves 2 points.

1) Great realistic graphics don't sell games anymore. Personally I feel The Orange Box with TF2 was the first game that reached this level.

2) The Wii U is sufficiently powerful enough for the types of games Nintendo makes. Not only does Smash Bros look great, but DK Tropical Freeze, Super Mario World 3D, and Mario Kart 8 all look amazing.

@36 Honestly SSB doesn't become the same game over and over, because SSB doesn't get that much releases. If your thinking of certain Nintendo games (excluding SSB) like Mario games, certain Pokémon games which ever I can see that.

Honestly "the same games over and over" topic related, I believe the Westerns in general are the real deal of creating the same game over and over. Honestly the Western games, Western themes, & Western marketing is actually very terrible when it comes to uniqueness of videogames. I believe the Westerns in general just really kills the verity of videogames because their trying to be the next Hollywood blockbuster, always about guns, TV drama, and the entertainment for Casuals which these examples are really killing on what makes videogames fun in the first place. The worst news the Japanese game development is shrinking, there is not enough Japanese media having their spotlight when it comes to the media, and Japanese culture mostly gets ignored by arrogant Western Gamers.

Heck honestly despite Nintendo does the same thing as you claim, the games that what Nintendo has that Sony & Microsoft lacks which makes both of these companies lacking gaming verity. Heck back at E3 I actually got bored with Sony because of a lacking game verity. (I did enjoy the PS myself, shame)

@47 You aren't denying it, lol!

And what does an avatar have to do with anything? Yep, I like the Pokemon franchise. It's a fun time-killer RPG that I grew up with. And guess what? I work and can afford to buy the games.

Broke dudes tryin' to argue. Ask your mom to buy you an avatar while she's at it.

Awww maann, I liked the darker, detailed, more realistic look of Brawl...the Wii U one seems a bit cartoony, I hope they add in that detail ainthe end, for example:on Wii version, u clearly can tell Mario's overalls r of a jean-like material or how in the Wii version Links shirt is less dress-like...nevertheless, I WANT IT, just a little disappointed

#50
Liberator said on July 1, 2013 at 2:10 a.m.

...I can't tell much differences aside from maybe less pixels (in Wii U version) and less jaggies at the edges and in some in transparent textures, but thats about it...its only tiny bit better...

#51
Hotdiddykong said on July 1, 2013 at 2:48 a.m.

What are you blind? Brawl's Texture's havent aged well compared to new smash.

"Not allot has changed"

Yeah because that Chainmail difference is DEFINITLEY not a significant change

#52
Hotdiddykong said on July 1, 2013 at 2:58 a.m.

Its true there isnt a massive different like Melee to Brawl, but all the fixes makes it an overall more appealing looking game and its graphics enhancement like Link's Hair and Chainmail, DK's Fur (Which you never compared) Kirby's more complete Circle and lighting and ESPECIALLY Bowser in general are all top notch and VERY noticable that its very well done and its only been 3 weeks since reveal.

Plus Brawl still had a better charm in its style than PSASBR, new Smash is just killing it

Obviously the Wii U allows for better AA (did the Wii even have any?) and the higher poly count and better resolution allow for more detailed models, but personally I've gotta say where there are subtle design differences and differences in colour palettes, with the exception of Samus I think I actually prefer the models in Brawl... I guess they're deliberately going for a more cartoony look though which I can understand because it's more in line with the majority of Nintendo's first party games.

#56
ps64 said on July 1, 2013 at 10:01 a.m.

Smash 64 had it's own look and feel. Smash melee has it's own look and feel. Brawl had it's own look and feel! During each transition of these games, they changed the costumes, the levels, the moves, and the gameplay! Now they've only made a remake of brawl, they should call it "Brawl HD Remix". It's disappointing that after all these years, they're just going to brush up on the game instead of making a new Smash... I think this is the last of the Smash series, like a Mass Effect 3; Very rushed and unfulfilling. Am I right?

#57
kdavis851 said on July 1, 2013 at 10:22 a.m.

I like the change in art style, going to a more cartoonish look instead of trying for realism. Mario's overalls looking like real denim in brawn was always off putting to me.

Nintendo is about being bright and colorful and whimsical. I think the new art direction falls more in line with that.

#58
Lordd_G said on July 1, 2013 at 10:40 a.m.

There's a huge difference! For example, Mario traded in his Osh Kosh overalls for Levi's.

#59
TheTHCGamer said on July 1, 2013 at 10:57 a.m.

Ill judge the graphics when I actually see the game in front of me on my TV. Either way if even if the graphics aren't much of an upgrade im fine with that because ive always been impressed with the look of the game since Melee. All I want is Nintendo to be busting ass on the netcode and for Nintendo to stop online gaming like its 1995.
