Smash Bros. has over 550 sign ups for EVO - game-by-game breakdown of CEO's registrants

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • June 24, 2013 at 8:24 p.m. PDT
Smash Bros. has over 550 sign ups for EVO - game-by-game breakdown of CEO's registrants Mr. Wizard mentioned today that Super Smash Bros. Melee, a game that was added to EVO 2013's lineup by the fans, currently has over 550 players registered to compete.

This is a huge number of players, especially for a game that wasn't even originally going to be in the lineup, but was added because fans raised almost $100,000 for breast cancer research.

To give these numbers a bit of context, we're comparing them with CEO 2013's current lineup, which is going down this weekend in Orlando, Florida. CEO is sure to be one of the biggest tournaments of the year, and their registration just closed, but they'll be accepting emergency registrants at the door. As such, these numbers aren't final, but do offer a solid look at how things should end up.

Hit the jump to check them out.

1. Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012 - 257
2. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - 243
3. Injustice: Gods Among Us - 173
4. Dive Kick - 90
5. Street Fighter X Tekken - 76
6. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - 57
7. Persona 4: Arena - 52
8. King of Fighters 13 - 40
9. Soul Calibur 5 - 35
10. Skulllgirls - 34
11. Mortal Kombat 9 - 28

Gahtdamn! As ridiculous as the Smash community can be, they got love for their game. 10+ years of Melee and it hasn't lost it.

"To give these numbers a bit of context"

EVO 2012 entrants:
SF4AE: 1,520
MvC3: 1,248
KoF13: 1,072
SFxT: 448 teams of 2
SC5: 416
MK9: 304

@Dustin

Thanks for those. I felt CEO's numbers better counter balanced the Smash numbers since both tournaments haven't taken place yet, and both numbers could go up still, but the stuff you posted is still interesting.

For a niche game that's over 10 years old, that's very impressive! Kudos to the Smash guys showing their support for this game.

I agree, pushing Marvel to the sidelines isn't enough. Push that garbage right out of tournaments altogether.

Didn't SFIV have over 1000 entrants, last year at EVO? Comparing Smash entrants at the hugest tourney in the world to SFIV, MVC3, and KOF entrants for the hugest tourney in North America doesn't make much sense.

Troll Article.

zUkUu said on June 24, 2013 at 9:24 p.m.

I also think it would be more appropriate to compare them with EVO 2k12 numbers.

rakhal said on June 24, 2013 at 9:29 p.m.

#16 and #17 have a strong point.

Comparing EVO numbers to smaller tournaments doesn't quite work. That is like comparing SF4 entrants for EVO with the SF4 turnout at Wednesday Night Fights based on the fact that they are both fighting game related events.

CEO numbers (MAINLY USA) VS EVO numbers (PLANET EARTH)

What was the point of this piece? I don't understand why 500+ entrants for Smash at EVO is news. It should also be noted that ANY game featured on EVO's mainstage will see an uptick in entrants, bigger venue and more money will bring out more players, obviously.

I also want to add, that I believe EHubs should divide news into serious-more informative information and just random-useless-information/ troll pieces.

@22 I believe that Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is very young, so it doesn't have a fully developed community unlike SSB. Plus Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale has few gameplay issues (Super Kills don't count) and unbalanced characters. So unless if Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale has a growing community and makes a sequel to improve from the original, were very unlikely see many Tournaments officially for Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale.

@24 I can't find any live tournaments or any competitive play on youtube for this game.

#26
Catalyst said on June 24, 2013 at 9:56 p.m.

One problem about posting the EVO 2012's numbers DustinFong mentioned are those weren't the actual numbers from the tournament, just the theoretical max for each bracket.

Does anyone have the EVO 2012 numbers off hand, that were accurate? I haven't seen them.

TrueGamingGuru said on June 24, 2013 at 10:08 p.m.

@26 The only tournament I found for Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale was the GameSpot video that hosted a tournament. (Its not a proper one since part of the videos don't focus on one matches and many people were playing their own matches on each side, plus the GameSpot host were mostly talking to one of persons involved with PSASBR when it comes to Zeus & Isaac.) For now you won't see much videos going on, but in the future (its going to be awhile) we might see more tournaments or competitive play.

MugenLord said on June 24, 2013 at 10:11 p.m.

@29 Thanks, I'm not sure if I am the only one but I like the game and yea it has its flaws mainly having a game based around supers. This leads to some characters being more viable than others as far as setups into supers etc. Hopefully they improve the game in a sequel and it would be nice to at least see 3 more characters for DLC.

It's not even a fighting game, it's a brawler like powerstone.

#32
TrueGamingGuru said on June 24, 2013 at 10:28 p.m.

@30 You're definitely not the only one that likes the game, because there are a couple of Playstation fans (including myself) that just like the game for what it was, heck this was the beginning for Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale so it won't become the best at start. (like a lot of other certain titles) For future plans are kinda unknown, but there is possible futures of a sequel. (just not right now) Heck it would nice to see more DLC characters.

chipndip said on June 24, 2013 at 11:01 p.m.

@14: Technically, I could say that SF X TKN has more numbers than every other fighting game under it, including Tekken, MK, and KOF. Dive Kick gets entrants cause there's only two buttons. It doesn't really mean much of anything.

Then again, you can leave it to guys like you to try to make it into something...

So...SFxT has more entrants than every game except SF4, Marvel, a game that just came out, and a 2 button troll FGC game that people play because it's a troll FGC game.

Awesome.

So...if SFxT is dead, what does that make all the other games?

Are we going to get EH articles stating how low the entries for these other games are? Or is that a privilege only reserved for SFxT?
