Killer Instinct free-to-play was a misconception, Glacius to be fully playable at EVO 2013 and 40 training lessons

Posted by SFilp • June 11, 2013 at 12:29 p.m. PDT
Killer Instinct free-to-play was a misconception, Glacius to be fully playable at EVO 2013 and 40 training lessons During the GameSpot E3 2013 stage event a few of the game developers from Double Helix Games were on stage to discuss their newly announced title Killer Instinct.

In particular a few rather important notes were made, the first thing mentioned was that there was a small misconception with the game being free-to-play. While the game is a launch title for the Xbox One, fans will be able to purchase the full game on it's release. There will also be a demo which comes with Jago as playable character where you can play all of the game's modes including online mutliplayer.

If you decided after playing the demo that you liked the game, you can selectively purchase packages which feature various characters.

Yesterday, during the announcement trailer Double Helix also showed off the character Glacius. It was confirmed that he would be fully playable during EVO 2013.

The last thing that was talked about was the game's 40 training lessons to try and teach players how to learn the game.

Oh, good. Glad they cleared that up--it would've been total BS otherwise.

I'm looking forward at playing one of my all time favorite fighting game series again, even if i have to go out and spend nearly 600$ for the game and system. Now i'm waiting for the Darkstalkers Reborn announcement, and the rumor Marvel Vs Capcom 4. It's just a rumor so i brought it up, so don't bash me please.

Glad they cleared it up and I'm excited to see more gameplay of Glacius! I know it's not related to Killer Instinct, but is there any other fighting games announced besides BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma?

I think it's really sad someone like filthie rich would work on this game when the X1 is going to destroy local tournaments. Expect to have to jump through millions of hoops to have xbox1 at tournies.

*See's FGC backlash*

Double Helix: whoa whoa everyone stop snortin' and get back to your stations. Tell 'em it was a troll, a joke, A MISCONCEPTIOOOON!

Seriously, Fighting games should never be F2P. "Oh what's this? Vergil, Seth, Lars, Litchi, MetaKnight are top tier. Well that's all I buy/need".

Spring 2014 release of KI3 on PS4.

Phew, that's a little better. It's still on the Xbone though, that's a problem, lol.

@2

Source on that rumor?
Or you can just admit you are making stuff up to get attention.

#15
RonaldRogan said on June 11, 2013 at 12:56 p.m.

@15. True. But that doesn't mean the developer wouldn't benefit--as would Microsoft. If Microsoft owns Rare... and Double Helix wants to sell more copies of KI3... wouldn't everyone benefit from pushing it to another console at a later date?

I really wish that would happen. This game looks awesome.

The game looks a little rough now imo and it's only a few months away. Hope they didn't rush things. Wish they had some more time to make sure it's polished. This franchise deserves a little TLC.

KI is really fun.

Im so tempted to get a next gen console just for this. It'll really depend how the game turns out the next few months.

Seeing what Max said about the gameplay system, makes me have high hopes. Although the game having a ton of frame advantage on many moves is a bit irking.

While I won't be playing because Xbox One, I am happy to hear it was a misconception, whether that's true or not.

Like I said before, I don't necessarily mind F2P fighters, but the idea of only one character being free was ridiculous on financial and gameplay levels.

Gorehound said on June 11, 2013 at 1:20 p.m.

That's what companies should do with the whole F2P model. Have the option to do F2P or sell a starter retail copy to have all the current released characters. Well, it's pretty much what Riot did with LoL, but it's a good option.

The good thing about F2P is that if the game is increasing in players, they can still continue to support the game and release more new characters since they don't have to worry about making more retail copies.

#32
mrdrofficer said on June 11, 2013 at 1:25 p.m.

What misconception?! People need to learn how to listen. This is exactly what they told everyone and the FGC and others still freaked out. I reminded people this is better than a demo for this exact reason in a previous thread and now everyone listens to reason. We're all going to just buy it in full anyway so what does everyone care?

And MS owns the franchise so stop asking for it on PS4.

#33
AnaboliChris said on June 11, 2013 at 1:47 p.m.

LOL the stream just clarified that Glacius will be playable at EVO but after the game launches, Jago will be the only playable free character.

@38 Capcom likes to deconfirm stuff beforehand, just to let people be surprised in the end. Since most of those games in that leak list were already announced, such as Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Halo 5, Forza 5, Quantum Break, Halo Sparton Assualt,COD: Ghosts, BF 4, Witcher 3, Dying Light, Prey 2, Homefron 2, Beyond Good And Evil 2, Mirrors Edge 2, Rainbow 6 Patriots, Brother in Arms League of legends, so it can still be true. Since all those games that were leak are already announced and trailers were shown.
These are the only games that haven't been announced yet on that leak list. All of Capcom games.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 (PS4 exclusive, DD team doing it)
Darkstalkers Reborn (Wii-U Exclusive. Funded by Nintendo, Dimps + Ono)
Marvel Vs Capcom 4 (Both. Eighting + Capcom. Also “Expandable” and also allegedly taking advantage of Microsoft’s E-Sports platform tools they gave to developers)
Megaman (both consoles, PC and done by “A very good US developer who you won’t expect but would be very happy to hear is doing it”)
New IP from Capcom Vancouver
New IP from Ninja Theory.
And that leak list is looking true so far so yeah. And Capcom has a surprise apparently, and they like to always deconfirm stuff such as when Sentinel was leaked and they made a excuse saying he couldn't be in MVC3 cause he was too big or something like that. So yeah these leaks are looking true so far, don't know what else could be a surprise. Besides those 3 games Megaman, Darkstalkers and Marvel Vs Capcom 4 But hey, it's just a rumor so i'll just leave it as that.

MasterOfMagnet said on June 11, 2013 at 2:41 p.m.

If KI will be good(and it looking good right now), maybe Capcom start work harder on their fighters?
Especially with DLC content, tourneys etc.

I think if sales will be good we can get a fighter with Halo-like tournament experience.

#43
MentalFloss said on June 11, 2013 at 2:47 p.m.

@5 I agree fully that's probably the case...

And this game will never be a tourney run game with the xbox drm crap. Unless it magically appears on Ps4 sometime in the future, I sincerely doubt we'll ever see it at a major.

#44
Donald_K_Bahls said on June 11, 2013 at 3:03 p.m.

MentalFloss, they will probably work with Microsoft to allow tournament organizers to pay a license fee to get a little code that will last the duration of a tournament, and the license fee will probably give "tournament" access to KI, which will change the properties of the xbox one. Someone asked that question about tournaments on twitter.

#45
Swafflong said on June 11, 2013 at 3:08 p.m.

There is a small chance that this could come to ps4. I mean, the game wasn't made by rare.

#49
V3N0MB1T3 said on June 11, 2013 at 4:22 p.m.

@47 no there is a ZERO % chance this can. Rare made the originals yes but Microsoft owns rare thus they own the KI IP as well. They merely saw that modern Rare is unfit to take on creating a game they're hoping will be a killer IP. I just dont know what in the hell it took to convince them that Double Helix was somehow deserving of the task instead....:/

I don't know who you was referring to but I'm not a fuking sheep. I'm not going to sit here and say so and so is awesome just because everyone thinks it is. I have my own opinions and reasons.......if I feel that a game or console or what ever it is right for me than so be it.

#51
ForTheViolence said on June 11, 2013 at 6:09 p.m.

As a tournament organizer myself for Texas Bar Fights (on our 13th TBF!) and Upper-Cut Circuit, I can tell you that the online check in is annoying at worst but it will not stop us from playing an incredible fighting game.

Between the days of a multi day tourney you connect the xbox to wifi or the internet being used to stream the tourney. NOT a big deal just annoying.

Example:
The stream is over for the day lets "check in" the xboxes. DONE.

or

Killer Instinct pools are done for the day, let's "check in" the xboxes so they will be ready for finals tomorrow. What's the wifi password? DONE.

Good God the "duh woah Killer instinctz iz back for Xbone !!!!!" sheep are being so short sighted. This DRM doesn't just mean a slight inconvenience for major tournaments. What about smaller tournaments that don't do streams? What about local weekly get togethers? Xbone is not only anti consumer, it is also anti FGC.

xShonuffx said on June 13, 2013 at 7:31 a.m.

@11 It was a Misconception, people take things out of context all the time and it builds and becomes something else by the time it comes full circle, that's how the internet works. Not everyone is trying to conspire against gamers. I am glad Double Helix is being honest and straight forward.

More than what I could say about Microsoft though but at least it will put them on the map, maybe this is what they were made to do, make fighters.
