Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • July 19, 2013 at 7:27 p.m. PDT
Updated with a trailer: A 720p version of the Soul Calibur 2 HD Online trailer from San Diego Comic-Con has been added into this story. Check it out below, and also hit the jump for more details.

It was announced at the Namco Bandai panel over at San Diego Comic-Con today that a new Soul Calibur project is currently in the works. Soul Calibur 2 will be receiving an HD port and will come complete with online functionality.

This will be a port of the PlayStation 2 version and will include Heihachi as the guest character. Nintendo's Link from the Legend of Zelda and Todd McFarlane's Spawn, both of which were also guests in SC2, were not shown in the trailer.

Soulcalibur 2 HD is going to be seeing a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release. It is set to hit consoles in the Fall of this year.

I guess this is good. But in the end it'll die in a week after its release.

Instant buy, for sure. I can't wait!

Thank you Namco for being business-saavy enough to not release a laggy port with no online.

My favorite SC of them all.
But it had its run. Bring on the new i say!

HELL YES!
I love this game. Surprised the XBox version is getting the one with Heihachi...but I'm not gonna complain :D

gohan16ken said on July 19, 2013 at 3:21 p.m.

So this fall, I am getting DOA5 and SC2HD. Then next year, USF4. Come on, I need more.

@Kamhaul, why do you think HD re-releases die after a week? I am not arguing or disagree with you, I just want to know. Fans ask for these re-release but they are never successful. Why is that?

No Wii U version with Link, its like every dev forgot about the console after launch. :(

Dygengar said on July 19, 2013 at 3:24 p.m.

@#1 you're bugging good sir SC2 is pretty much everyone's favorite of the series I doubt URL die especially that fast......I wonder if they'll include all 3 exclusive characters in it though if so I hope link isn't broken and that they tone down certain weapon effects because some were really strong!!

#13
SummerUndercover said on July 19, 2013 at 3:25 p.m.

@12, I don't think it's completely out of the question. And if NB ever did release a Wii U version, now is not the time to. After December, maybe even mid 2014, when a ton of consoles sell will be the time.

#14

Best and only SC I've liked. Still have the GC version with Link.

#16
DevinAmir1 said on July 19, 2013 at 3:28 p.m.

@gohan16ten

I know you didn't ask me, but I think I know a bit of why this happens. It seems that these HD re-releases have a very specific target audience, mainly those that have played the game in the past. Now that many of these people either don't game, don't play fighting games, etc., the player base for this particular title is likely to be small. My philosophy is to simply get the gamer tags of people you know play this game, and keep them on your list for future gaming sessions.

#17
TheMasterPlayer said on July 19, 2013 at 3:29 p.m.

oh yeah! oh yeah! OH YEAH! The best one in the series, with online play? Take my Mowneei! lol

Super_Honda said on July 19, 2013 at 3:29 p.m.

I got SC2 on Gamecube, great game. I play Raphael most of the time and sometimes, a bit of Link. Even though I might get this game on PS3, I wonder if it's going to come out on Wii U? It's not that I own a Wii U, it's just that if SC2 HD comes on Wii U, Link will be in the game. Unless licensing issues might come into play....

F*CK. YES. This and Melee were my two most played Gamecube games by far and to this day, I have huge regrets of selling it. Granted, chances of a Wii U version happening aren't likely at the moment, I will definitely be buying this for PS3.

#23
Kamhaul said on July 19, 2013 at 3:35 p.m.

@10 Even if you play a HD rerelease of a game, at the end of the day it's still a game that died out. There's a reason popularity for the games died out and just a graphical update isn't going to rekindle that "fresh" experience. It sucks...but there aren't enough people who want stay with a dated game.

@13 What happened to the other tons of HD/online releases companies have put out before. Mvc1/2, Vampire Savior, Third Strike, and GGAC+ were all fan favorites but they all died within the month of their HD release. That's not even an over exaggeration. I don't know what makes you think SC2 will perform any differently.

loooove sc2! <3 and by the way, didnt this game have some sort of exploit that pretty much neutralized high and low game? fuzzy guarding or something? i hope they take that out. i heard it kind of killed sc2 at a high level..would hate for this game to die for something like that.

At least I still have my mains, Talim and Cervantes!!!

DevinAmir1 and Kamhaul, if what you are saying is true (and I think Sven formerly from Capcom would agree) then companies should stop re-releasing old games on modern system. We should not get Sonic the Hedgehog in HD, Super Mario World in HD, Virua Fighter 2 in HD, Donkey Kong Country in HD, etc. And fans should stop requesting it.

Personally, I would not mind a non-HD non-online play re-release of old games. I love SFA3 on my PS3 just the way it is.

My 10th favorite game of all time. GCN version was best but this is still good, and makes sense considering licensing.

They need to go back to the graphical style of SC2 and SC3, cuz the recent 2 games had all the fighters look pale and gothic.

@#59.

Free Impacts? Impacts took skill, you also had the option for Guard Deflects. The balance in 5 is absolutely terrible. Some characters have way tooo much buff with ex moves, while some were nerfed and changed so much that returning players didn't know what to do with them.

That's my opinion.

I shouldn't be surprised, but seriously, Link sold more SC than Spawn, Kratos, Darth Vader, or Ezio. Probably combined. It put the series in the public eye after the DC version made it a cult classic? How come Nintendo hasn't seen a single SC since then barring that awful beat-em-up?!

SC5 is ok, but I absolutely hated 4. 2 was my favorite back then, and I went back to it last month and I have to say it remains my favorite. Weapons master is an absolute drag, but the single player doesn't really matter that much anyway. Cassandra and Talim are so much more fun in SC2 than they would ever be again.

Oh, and I know there's like a 0.1% chance of this, but if they included an online conquest mode that'd be amazing...and they would have announced it right away if they were going to. :(

#73
Tensa said on July 19, 2013 at 7:04 p.m.

sc5 just lacked some of the cool SC characters imo anyways I'm happy for this

#74
Darkdragon007 said on July 19, 2013 at 7:05 p.m.

Ok, but Just Guards are seriously harder than they need to be with online lag. Also the use of the impacts is where the skill is. You can ping pong, but skill told you when to bait it out. The character balance in 2 is far superior in several ways.

1: not having to rely on meter build up. You had the Soul Charge with 3 levels. This gave you your "ex" moves while making it be much more tactical, than what the guage system does.

2: Character balance much better than any SC title after it. The arcade version went through so much fan and tourny feedback that 2 was balance perfect by the time it hit consoles. Only the extra characters were wonky. Every character is viable. Yes there are matchups that favor one more than the other, but counter picking really just didn't exist, unless you personally knew the person your playing.

3: 3 onward have had mediocre balance at best. With the patches to 5 they have just gone to far one way or the other with characters. The new ones got buffs before anyone really knew how to play with them, thus really causing them to be broken, muscle memory characters much like Ibuki in SF4.

4: New players were able to pick it up and learn, and grow as competitive players without characters being simplified to the point they don't play like themselves anymore. Mitsurugi, and Ivy were destroyed in 5.

You really have to spend some time playing 2 to truly know what the hype is all about. Most of the newer FGC community are only used to games that have ex bars, and super moves, and revenge moves. I can understand if it's not your cup o' tea, and that's fine. I'm sure the other couple ten thousand or so other players that will be playing this with me will have a blast without you.

#75
Kuvio said on July 19, 2013 at 7:08 p.m.

A lot of SCV hate in here. Sure single player was not the greatest, but the core game itself is quite good. SCI-II are pure nostalgia candy for me, but I feel there is more room to grow as a player in SCV. I do miss a few characters though (Kilik!) Anywho, I am hype for this!

#77
Darkdragon007 said on July 19, 2013 at 7:12 p.m.

I play Mitsu, mained him since 1. I guess I just can't keep up, because his nerfs killed him. His speed, and defense are horrible. Just about every single move he has is punishable on actual hit. His one good counter move D/F Horizontal doesn't give you anything anymore. It's much slower than it used to be, and the stun only lasts as long the attack animation. By the time you can attack or do anything they are blocking or using a ex move that crushes any option you have. The Relic stance was a huge part of my playstyle with him. Having that gone, and all but 1 of his auto impact moves killed the game for me. Don't even get me started on IVY.

This is just my opinion, and I understand I am a minority.

This is... pretty understandable. Considering how badly Soul Calibur 5 was receive (i think SC4 sold more copies that 5, but don't have a source to back-up my presumption), and how famous SC2 was... 1 + 1 = 2

Also, the appearence of Heihachi in both version (PS3 and 360) is pretty much sealed by the fact that Namco would need a license from McFarlane to use Spawn again, and i don't think he was that memorable to begin with. So, Heihachi for all!!!

Personally, i won't support this, since i still got my GameCube copy around and online play isn't a must-have either. I would consider this IF Namco makes a Wii U version, but that's up to Nintendo to express its desire to have this game in the console and giving them one more time a license to use Link. That would make it the most attractive version, in my opinion...

Other than that, the best SC version will arrive, and i hope the younger generation try it. Also, lets see if the community support this and we can have a EVO 2014 SC2 tournament =)

#91
theshredder39 said on July 19, 2013 at 9:07 p.m.

I'm honestly sure how I feel about this but I may end up getting it anyway because my Gamecube copy is at the break of death, plus the PS2 version is the only one I never got to play so I'd be down with giving Heihachi a shot.

#92
Portal23 said on July 19, 2013 at 9:07 p.m.

Good times! I bought the GameCube version specifically for Link.

#93
DRain said on July 19, 2013 at 9:10 p.m.

@90 Heihachi was bottom tier due to the lack of priority on all his moves.

I'm more surprised than I should be that people don't realize how big this game was at tournaments back in the day. A lot of veteran Soulcalibur players say 2 was the best game in the series.

#94
Troidberg said on July 19, 2013 at 9:15 p.m.

It would be nice to play what I consider one of the best fighting games ever in HD, but honestly I don't see the point since I can still play it on my Gamecube, and since Link was one of my favorite characters to play as, the lack of a WiiU version makes it even less appealing to pay for the game another time.

To anyone who hasn't played this before I would highly recommend it; it's arguably the best Soulcalibur game, and one of the best 3D fighters I've ever played.

As cool as this is, I can't get too excited about going back to the world of Step G. SCV's engine is superior to II's imo (raises flames shield). And I'd like to know what the Lost Swords trademark is all about.
