American Idol winner Taylor Hicks attended EVO 2013, tied for 257th place in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • July 15, 2013 at 2:13 p.m. PDT
Taylor Hicks, who's perhaps best known as the winner of the fifth season of American Idol, which is a very popular singing competition, stopped by the EVO 2013 tournament in Las Vegas, but perhaps even more shocking — he apparently competed in Super Smash Bros. Melee and finished tied for 257th place.

Sony's Seth Killian tweeted out this photo and the info.

There haven't been many known celebrity fighting game players over the years, as the last time a big star said they were a fan of the genre was when actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Lincoln, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, 3rd Rock from the Sun, etc.) went on Jimmy Fallon's talk show in 2010.

Still, it's kind of cool to see some celebrities in the entertainment scene who are fans of the same stuff we are.

Would have been cooler if Joseph Gordon-Levitt entered AE 2012.

Celebrity Kappa

But really, I think more Justin Wong and Daigo are bigger celebrities than this guy right now.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is properly an Old-Skool SF fan, and doesn't like SF4.

@10

Nope. Not only did both AE and Marvel have more, Nico Nico's viewer count for both of those games were pretty damn high as well. James Chen said AE topped out at 125k Nico Nico viewers, and Twitch's side had about 125-130k.

#17 I seen no such numbers, Marvel was at most around 130k and I was on and off the streams constantly during the semi final, finals and grand finals. IT peaked over 130k but no where near 140k. Im sure we watched the same stream.

Also Why U No have videos of this guys matches?

@25 yea Marvel was at around 120k for most of it till the around end when they got to 141k. anything after that i wasnt paying attention. it was the other stream monsters who cared so much about "losing" to Smash in views. even if they did get less views than Smash they wouldve came up with some excuse as to why it didnt matter or something like that.

i personally dont care that much about views but im 100% sure the Marvel monsters were ready with some sort of option select whether they lost or won. lol pathetic.

#31

AE did not have anywhere near 140k views. It ranged from 110k to 130k. It kept fluctuating.

@#25

According to Matthew DiPietro, vice president of marketing at Twitch, concurrent viewership during Evo peaked at 144,848 for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. That viewership figure bests Twitch's estimates for Super Smash Bros. Melee, which drew 134,000 viewers, and Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, which drew 125,000 viewers.

From http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/15/4526...

That should end any doubt about my numbers.

I guess also counts as a "celebrity" Fighting Gamer like Hicks since its a reality TV competition.
Mango may have Ken's EVO throne, but I doubt the scene will ever get to besting Ken's 5th place finish in Survivor :)

@fightdirty 58

I don't hate Taylor, seems like a nice guy when I saw him in interviews, but lolololol that was funny

Since Taylor got 257th place, he won some matches and so must have practiced and genuinely liked the game. That's cool, he showed up as a gamer, not as an attention PR guy
