Breno Fighters was unable to attend the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Grand Finals tournament in early December, as he his Visa application was denied twice. Due to Visa issues, Get Ready's Breno "Breno Fighters" Mateus was not able to participate in the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Tournament. With a nail biting win over one of the world's best Akuma players MCZ Tokido, Brazil had high hopes for their champion, but were saddened when his Visa application was denied not once, but twice. In an effort to allow Brazil a chance to prove they are indeed a world power, Capcom has graciously decided to send Infiltration, Laugh and myself to Brazil to participate in some exhibition matches this Sunday, January 27th in Brazil at Get Ready's Revox tournament.
All of the action will be streamed over on the Capcom Fighters Twitch channel on Sunday.
I guarantee to you: the surprise won't be Breno, the Cammy player. Ok, he is a good player and stuff. But you'll see. The surprise will be the Abel. The name? Well, you'll see. But it will blow your mind.
What's up with this guy that his visa application was denied twice?
Don't know. But he talks funny. His accent is... strong.
I can't help but feel like this would have never happened if Combofiend didn't recently take a job for Capcom, I think he will truly bring Capcom closer to the real fighting game community. Whatever the reason some serious matches are about to go down. Go Brazil!!
@17
I see Capcom has succeeded in winning you. But please remember, Capcom's annual revenue is 997 million, their 2012 net income is around 81 million and their total asset is 1.19 billion This is chump change for them to gain some good PR.
Small investment -> good publicity -> profit
However, I do congratulate Capcom on making the effort to do this, regardless how insignificant it costs them in the end.
@21
So what?
A business is not allowed to make money? The amount of money they spend on their games' community is irrelevant. The fact that they do stuff like this (and OFTEN) should be enough. Some people are so unbelievably ungrateful.
@8
Missed this earlier but the American consulate for Brazil was denying every Brazil player, not just Breno, from entering the States. The consulate was claiming that the SF tourney was not a legit reason for them to travel into the country, or some other BS like that.
@22
I think you misunderstood what I wrote. I was merely trying to point out that this sort of thing really doesn't cost Capcom much of anything to do. Nowhere did I say that Capcom should not make money.
Why should I be grateful? I don't get it, I already bought their products with my money. They're not my savior nor are Capcom a company full of angels lead by Mother Theresa. They are in it for profit and they know this is good PR. Corporations don't do anything for nothing.
@23
Although money is powerful in most parts of the world, certain things still cannot be swayed by money alone. Although I would seriously doubt Capcom can "sway" the country in granting a visa for Breno Fighters. Capcom is not a government, it doesn't represent a country, nor does it have international political leverage.
Now if Mr. Obama called the country and asked their governing body very very politely to let Breno Fighters come to USA, I am sure that would work.
24: So then, in order for someone's good deed to be "significant", it has to cut into a certain percentage of their overall worth? Are we saying that because their efforts in reworking SF X TKN, organizing a huge tournament, hiring people right out of the FGC, flying top players to Brazil and back SOLELY TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES, making a fan-made Mega Man game legit AND FREE WITH UPDATES, pestering Marvel to update a game out of player request, and (possibly) making another update to SSFIV is just as negligible as what Arc System Works and Nether Realm does for their fans (like...what do they do exactly?) because it doesn't "cost enough money"?
I mean, that sounds kind of ungrateful to me. They're no saviors. They're a business. Still, they deserve props when they earn them. We all know they get s**t when they do (or don't).
@25
Great post. I like how you highlight Capcom's efforts. In fairness he did give them credit for the effort. But it was backhanded credit to be sure.
@24
I think you misunderstood me. I wasn't suggesting bribery or that money is the 'end all be all'. I just meat that Breno had a credible source/resource in his corner. Sure it's not the President... But it's not a beer/stripper run across the border either. It was an International tournament.
Just surprised a giant international company making requests didn't lend some credibility to his reason for travel.
@25
You have to remember Capcom's end goal. The fans are their customers and FGC and EVO especially is an excellent carrier for Capcom's fighting game brands. 2012 EVO was trending worldwide on Twitter. Gamespot and Gametrailers made a big deal about EVO and they are coming to EVO 2013 to give even more coverage. People are starting to recognize fighting games and its community as an interesting and untapped market.
Everything you just said in that big list ties into what Capcom already realized, FGC is the perfect candidate to sell their "games" for them to the general audience. There is no reason for Capcom to continue neglecting an inexpensive but potentially highly profitable investment at all. Why did it take Capcom so many years to even start working with this amazing "community"? That is an interesting question that UltraDavid and James Chen probably would discuss.
Capcom's top executives might think in purely terms of investment and profit, that's them. They are business men, managers and they are good at what they do. I would not however, generalize Ono and Seth Killian in that same category. These are passionate and creative people and I couldn't give them enough props. Unfortunately, Ono cannot green light a game without asking permission. Games cost a lot of money to make after all.
Now that we got business out of the way, I do like Capcom is putting efforts into FGC, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. But am I grateful for free updates? Are they really free though? You already paid for it to begin with right? You didn't pirate it right? Why not demand a proper Capcom Mega Man? Why settle for a fan-made game?
@26
You must be overestimating the value of so called Fighting game tournaments to the larger world. Sure, it's a huge event to us fighting game nuts, but do the law makers of Brazil really care about it? I highly doubt it. They may have been a multitude of reasons as to why Breno Fighters wasn't able to come to USA for the tournament and I am not ready to speculate on what really happened. I am merely arguing on the basis of Capcom has any political pull in Brazil, even if they are hosting the biggest fighting game tournament event of all time.
@28: Well DUH. Of course. It's mutual benefit. We support them with money, and they (hopefully) support us with content and events. What other genre in gaming, let alone company in gaming, is THIS closely tied to the very players that bless, curse, and troll their name on a regular basis?
We know that, in the end, it's for the money. It's a BUSINESS. If they have no money, they go out of business and end the IPs we know and love. So what if they want my money? I want their games. As long as I like what they're doing, that mutual relationship will continue to thrive.
Like I said, they're no saints, but they're trying in the public relations category. It's only fair to give them some props.
People being ironic about capcom begin generous are so retarded... Didn't they recently organize the largest fighting game tournament ever made?
Should they loose money giving more to the community with the risk of overdoing it and not having enough to make the games we love anymore?
Do you think spending 100 dollars for a game that is lasting 4 years was a lot?
Of you do then you are the cheap people who should get the f--k out of here
Excellent - Breno's Cammy is sick, the final he won against Tokido was intense.
Wouldn't surprise my at all if Breno made it very close or even won.
Breno is an all out attacking machine.
So I guess they don't give out passports or something in Brazil? sounds pretty stupid to me. Brazil (does have issues) but is far better than a lot of south america... I really don't get why we can just choose to not let people visit our country. Pretty sure we can go where ever the f*ck we want. This must be a republican policy.
Nonimmigrant visas are for international travelers (citizens of other countries), coming to the U.S. temporarily. The visa, placed in your passport when issued, allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (airport, for example) and request permission of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection immigration officer to enter the U.S. A visa does not guarantee entry into the U.S.
It seems they could have always said he looked like a terrorist and sent him home anyway. I really like how we put people through a ton of crap to visit, and then when they get here we can always just boot em out before they even leave the airport
Relations between the USA and Brazil are good right now. Just returned from Brazil yesterday, yes it has its problems but it's far better than many other countries down there.
In my experience Brazilians usually get denied a visa because:
1) They think you may be a terrorist or have terrorist connections.
2) They don't believe you have the funds to support yourself while in the US.
3 ) They believe that once you arrive in America you decide to stay & become an illegal resident.
Breno is a great player but I don't think he'll win, sure beating Tokido was a great feat on his behalf, but there are plenty of people that are way better than Tokido including Infiltration. Look at Latif he got 2nd at evo and got completely destroyed by Infiltration, and im sure infiltration has learned the cammy matchup so it won't be to bad for him. And before anyone says im dickriding infiltration, my favorite player in SF in Kyoku from Japan
@25 Best post I've seen on this site for absolutely ages. Well said!
Class Act move on Capcom's part, something I didn't think they still had. Now if only EA and Bioware could learn that and not have screwed us with that horrible Mass Effect 3 ending....
if breno wins, give him a prize like the one in SF25.
and stop it with the "capcom wouldn't do this if they didn't have (insert player/known person working/used to work for capcom)" crap.
"Wow, lets turn even positive things around as a way to bash Capcom, for they are the company of the Devil!!"
and @34 LMAO XD
@grapf doing something like this is great but it's not going to fix all the disc locked dlc and drm they have in there games. The way they've been the past couple of years isn't something to be happy about. That's why the fans get mad and say what they say about them.
@44
Both Bonchan and Kazonoko have beaten Infiltration lately. Not only Daigo.
Yeah, Brazil!!
House, Chuchu, Breno, Bruno, Ludo, and all others... give their best *-*
@39
reason why i didn't like EVO 2012.
@48
thank you for putting this in better words.
I hope Breno Fighters train really hard for this.
I want it to be a good match, they definitely have the skills.
Go Breno Go Breno and luck versus Infiltration the fuc... Street Fighter 4 player
