Viper and Abel might be better than some of these characters, theoretically speaking, but there's relatively little AE2012 usage of both of these characters, so I can't say for sure.

Viper arguably so, she's top 10 for sure. But Abel? Nah. He's pretty good but not as good as Cammy, Seth, Akuma, Fei Long, or Adon. Or C. Viper, or Rufus, or pretty much any of the other argued top 10 characters.

@5 There's been about 3 or 4 articles on top players tweeting who they think is the top 5 in AE. This has been debated enough.

That awkward feeling when 4 of them are characters you play before realizing they were actually really good ;_;

(Just replace Seth with Sakura and put her at the top and switch Fei and Adon and that will be my top 5 I use.)

Top tier is pretty much defined by having a brand of offense or defense that covers most if not all of the opponent's options. They get to take less risks with more rewards. With that in mind I'd argue

Discussing tier lists is like discussing religion. Those of you intelligent enough to figure out why that's an amazing waste of time, I applaud you.

Man who cares about a top 5! This topic is old and pointless! Play with which ever character you wish to play with and make them number 1 on YOUR list! What makes these characters too 5? Because your favorite tournament player uses them and everybody wants to be fanboys and jump on them? A top tournament player could release video of him winning with Ono's Blanka toy then I guess that would put it in the top 5 too huh! Smh!

I think ssf4 ae v2012 is currently the best fighting (beat'm up) game. But it could be most better, if they improve the game. Instead to make a new fu*** game like sfxtk they should add new chars, balance the game, stages, modus learn option selects, anti-airs,... the access into ssf4 is very hard for beginners and costs a lot of time to be good in this game.
I'm frustated after a match vs cammy or viper with my main char Guy. I could change my main char but why they are chars like guy, cody, hakan!, t. hawk. They r very good players who uses t.hawk or cody and they r very successfull. But i have never seen a player who uses makoto in grand finals. Everytime seth vs akuma, or fei vs seth, ... Capcom should change this. more focus on ssf4 ae v2012!!! I love this game! It's not just a fighting game but rather a strategy game:-)

Tier lists do matter to an extent. They show which characters have the best statistics, tools, etc. to win their matches in the hand of a highly skilled player. Now this varies but generally most top players have a consensus of the top characters. While yes it is important to pick who you enjoy playing and make them #1 on your list and find out all they have to offer. But that can only get you so far in a competitive environment. I use Cody and he's my main I love to play with him over the rest of the cast, but at the end of the day I know his short comings are too easy to exploit. Granted to avoid that you're best option is to not be in that situation, but matches go so many different ways it's hard to keep that situation from happening. Still that's why characters like Akuma, Seth, Fei, Adon, and Cammy are top tier at the moment. They have very few short comings.

Imagine if Seth stole Hakan's oil move?

The more of these a character has, the better:

-a divekick
-a DP
-a fast and/or comboable overhead
-a command throw
-a non-EX special with startup invincibility that can be made safe
-a (non-charge) special that moves horizontally
-a projectile

Your absolutely right, but my whole argument is there's 39 characters in AE I can play everyday for a month and wont see over half of the cast in rank matches. That's cuz no one wants to be original and play with whom every they like to play with. Now don't get me wrong maybe your favorite is one of them "top" characters, by all means play them. But in reality the FGC flock to characters that tournament players use or says that they are top tier

Iunno, I feel that Dee Jay, Abel and Yang are really unexplored and have a lot of potential.

The great thing is, there's several other characters which are tourney viable (or even won tourneys), and even top 5 have some cons (Akuma and Seth, you cannot afford mistakes) and bad matchup (Fei, Viper, Cammy), so they're very, very beatable.

Overall a great iteration for SF balance wise, with still many unexplored characters.

Yun isn't top 10.

Cammy Akuma Seth Fei are top 4 most definitly.
Adon Ibuki Sakura Viper can be 5th imo depending on the location.
Characters that can seem top 5 or 10 at a master class level like Cody, Dictator, Juri, Yun/Yang, Rose, Gen, Ryu, and Guy won't because of the lack of players using them.

Does anybody realize the potential of Ibuki? Not to mention nobody knows the el fuerte match.

@34: Ibuki certainly has potential, but really only one person in the world has done anything significant with her, and that person is Sako.

El Fuerte being a lesser known matchup does not make his matchups better.

On a serious note since I only started seeing really good T. Hawks in the recent months and they are really blowing up some good players games, I'm gonna have to say character accessibility more than character ability makes those top 5 seem soooo good. Sure T. Hawk will never be top 5 or even 10, but Fei Long, Akuma, Cammy, Seth, Viper and Adon can be argued into any slot from 1-5 and should just be considered the best characters. Numbering them is almost pointless once you establish their superiority over the rest of the cast though.

Anyone cane be viable, you just need A SH*T TON of experience to win if facing one of the more accessible characters.

@33 right, yun cant be top 10 in his current state. he is overnerfed. ryu, viper, sakura, ibuki, sagat, rufus, are better right now.

i think he is between 11 and 15.
