Evolution's co-founder, Tom Cannon recently did an interview over on GameSpot. He discusses changes to the tournaments format, various games that almost made it to this years event, how they plan to manage all eight games, Smash Bros, Mortal Kombat, Injustice and more.Mortal Kombat was chosen, but not Injustice: Gods Among Us, which is scheduled to come out next year. Why this decision? Is it because the game hasn't even been released yet? Is there any chance it could make it's way into the lineup?
The April release date of Injustice is just two months away from EVO, which is a very short amount of time to draw out a game’s full potential. Injustice is one of the games which made the cut for the donation drive, so if fighting games fans want to see it in official tournament lineup they can work toward raising money for the Breast Cancer Research Fund on its behalf.
Although you've always had several Capcom titles, with so many fighting games out now, did that make it difficult at all to bring back SFxT again?
Not at all. Street Fighter X Tekken has had a very rocky start, but I think it showed potential in at the recent Capcom 25th Anniversary tournament. Capcom also has a great track record of steadily improving their fighting games with each subsequent revision and we expect Street Fighter X Tekken v2013 to be no exception.
Which game came the closest to making the final list?
Injustice and Playstation All-Stars were both very close to making it.
Check out the full interview over on GameSpot.
Very nice to see 2 games that many hate almost made it into the EVO lineup.
Too bad those 10k viewers didn't see the potential.
@trufenix
Because no one is taking him seriously, I guess?
Yea its not about the viewers in my opinion, if cvs2 was boring to watch and made people fall asleep (Which is what it did) that doesn't mean its not a game worth playing, and it shouldn't be thrown away based on the viewers perception, if its a good game, and players really want to play it, than just because a bunch of stream monsters complain doesn't mean you shouldn't have it at tournaments, or drop the game completely. Its as easy as just not watching.
Capcom 25th Anniversary tournament? You mean when Infiltration beat Tokido 6-0? That match was boring as hell!
@darkblade13
Not that, rather it's sethlolol vs Team EG. It's there were the game's potentials were truly shown.
Remember when MK9 was featured in EVO 2011? That game came out in April of that year. How strange.
@1
Even if there was 10k viewer drop, there were still 15k viewers watching. I guess you conveniently forgot about that. Also, majority rules.
@9 It makes sense. Pretty damn weird why it was omitted. They could have taken out SFxT and added Injustice instead.
@9, MK9 was well played/known and plenty of people had faith in it long before release.
Injustice has been played by nobody and even the MK faithful are skeptical about its systems.
Injustice will naturally be shunned by the Cap-crowd, and its entirely possible the MK faithful will turn their back on it (initially, at least) too. That would be disastrous for a prime EVO spot.
>Breast Cancer Research Fund
What is Mr. Wizard going to do with the rest of the money after he pays $50 to get himself a mammogram?
I don't buy Injustice not being in because of April release or people not knowing having faith in the game. However, I don't think it matters that much because it's still going to get played at tournaments and there are plenty of other games in the Evo lineup to entertain me and other people. Plus having MK9 and Injustice at Evo at the same seems like overkill to me.
