Since it's initial announcement, fans have questioned the story behind of Injustice: Gods Among Us and NeatherRealm was going to make all the aspects of the game work. Some examples would be how Catwoman an stand her own against characters like Superman.To tell you the truth, when the script arrived, I rolled my eyes, gritted my teeth and prepared to read through what I assumed would be a standard script to a fighting game; some ham-fisted dialogue, followed by some flaky reason to want to take out the opponents ribs one at a time.
And then I started reading it – and I read the entire thing in one sitting – and then I grinned. This really is the most ambitious script I’ve ever seen from a fighting game, and the NetherRealm guys have pulled it off.

Dammit, I must say I'm really excited about the story mode, especially after MK9.
If it's as delicious as MK9, I'm going to have a fun time.
It can't be that hard considering the competition. Can't wait though!
NetheRealm with them scripts. They should write the story mode for Street Fighter. That game's story could use some freshening and organization.
Have they ever read Blazblue? Sure there are joke arcs and a lot of things don't make sense but once you understand it it's a very deep story.
I'm not planning to buy this game either way, I won't entirely hate on it though since I guess there are people who like MK9.
I have faith that both Netherrealms and Tom Taylor can deliver a good story.
I could not stand Blazblue it was just to corny and so animeish but everyone haves there own taste.
MK9's story blew me the heck away. Fully rendered cutscenes where they didn't cheap us out with crappy comic stills and text, amazing segues into the actual fights, and a plot that actually kept me interested enough to finish the whole story mode in one sitting. Truly a staple in fighting game story telling.
I can't believe Seth Killian actually had the nerve to lie to everyone about MvC3 getting an actual story mode. Capcom needs to step it up in the story telling department. Say what you will about stories in fighting games, I honestly believe that in a VIDEO GAME plot related content is just as important as the actual gameplay.
@13, it's literally one dollar and you can access it from any smart phone, tablet or web browser. There will be updates every tuesday;
sf vs mk
netherrealm does the story, capcom does the system.
@9 Interestingly enough I bought that game hoping to enjoy the story as I am a huge Persona and FGC fan and ending up hating it so much I never fininshed it.I just could not get used to the main character having a personality that came across as Mary Sueish.
Production values of the MK9 story mode blew me away and the idea of changing the timeline was a lot more clever than a conventional "reboot", props to them for that.
The story itself didn't impress me as much as the clear amount of money/effort they spent on the mode.
On the flipside the story of Blazblue has more complexity to it, but the production values were near zero with an endless barrage clicking through textboxes.
I'm hoping Injustice goes more for the MK9 approach than the Blazblue one; and here's also hoping the story is good.
The MK9 story was the best story I've ever seen in a fighting game so I do have hope for this story.
With this talk about story, no one mentioned the Tekken story? It's an amazing (yet a little stereotypical) story about betrayal.
hehe ... Most ambitious story isn't saying much for the fighting game genre ... since most of the time fighting games don't have much of a story to begin with (nor need one ).
And guys Blazblue can't really contend no matter how good the story is, while being presented in such low production values that water down to still character images and a moving mouth.( With text and voice acting , so the player pretty much has to do alot work and piece together everything by themselves , since it's not presented in cinematic simplicity )
That's something most modern gamers can't tolerate with current/next gen technology and visuals available. And that's probably one of the reasons why MK9 did so well, since it has the most cinematic of story modes, with western production values behind them.
Netherealm studios might very well be the Hollywood of fighting games at the moment. The only japanese fighting game that comes close is DOA5's story mode.
@6
I love Blazblue's gameplay and even the characters... but that story is not well written. It's an interesting plot, but the way it's presented is either incredibly boring (long, droning explanations) or embarrassing (Cliche anime humor. Especially with Noel.)
Just finished reading issue #1 of the comic. It's not bad, but it's hardly a revolutionary story. Irredeemable already did the "Superman turns evil plot", and from what I can tell it did it a lot better.
Heck, the "Joker kills Lois(I assume that's what's going to happen) wwas already done in Kingdome Come, though with a different outcome.

lol those spoilers. Don't matter i payed the dollar for the issue. Yeah Injustice is gonna have a great story i can tell its not mediocre writing. It shares some similarities to Kingdom Come but i can tell its gonna go in a different direction
So no fights caused by merely making eye contact? Sounds great.
There's a few spoilers floating around for the first in-game chapter of Injustice. I won't repeat them but it's a legitimately interesting and epic scope story. As others have said about the prequel comic it is a bit like Kingdom Come in concept but the first game chapter suggests the actual way the story will play out is new, and not a copy of Kingdom Come.
It is A LOT larger in scale btw than "Joker kills Lois"; suddenly the apocalyptic vibe Injustice has been shooting for in concept art and the game stages makes sense. The actual title of the game, the word "injustice" will also make sense from the first chapter of the story mode.
Yes it sounds like a better story than MK9 in terms of plot and script.
One word, America! Yeah America, you are so godlike at selling your stuff; Maybe I will end up buying this game, I shpuld stop kooking at this game.
Again America!!!
@22
Tekken story went completely downhill after the 4th game. It was pretty good up to that point, but 5 decided to focus more on gameplay than story and retcon everyone back to life (which i'm ok with) but 6 took it a step too far and added characters and stories way too over the top.
Anyway, this has me hype for this game.
@27 & 28
lol sorry, I'm usually very careful about spoilers, but I just wanted to voice my opinions. Though I think some of what I said was fairly obvious.
@28
IMO the plot looks like it's going to be much more similar to Irredeemable than Kingdome Come.
That's the hottest Superman has ever looked. I wish his character model looked like that too, but it's oooooookaaaaay.
Can't wait to get the physical copy of this at the end of the month!
I'm a supporter of plots in fighting games, so I'll keep my eyes open for this. I do agree the presentation can be an issue, but its plot is a big part of why I love BlazBlue regardless. I gave it a chance, and it blew my mind. One of the best plots I've had the pleasure to play-through in a video game.
I still cringe at some of its bad jokes and stupid fan-service, but I'll take it anyways.
UMVC3 has 50 characters
MK9 has 32 characters
i really don't get how people would prefer having 18 less characters as a trade off for arcade/story mode and mini-games.
Also I don't know how a game would literally have basically the same animations for jumps, jump attacks, and uppercuts.
If Injustice's gameplay is actually great, i would rather them spend their resources on giving us more characters instead on a story mode.
Games are still supposed to be fun and have different things for multiple different types of players. And I guess you are forgetting that UMVC was an expansion that cost forty bucks after most people bought MVC3 for 60. $100? Better have 50 goddamn characters.
It is obvious that Capcom games are way better even without a great story. I don't care about the story and BTW, I never finished a Blazblue story mode, BS for me!!!!I don't want to hear women crying all time and men hating each other with no reason. I hate that asian anime culture.
I want a strong game, good netcode and a special training mode for this game, that is all I need.
@39 by the time that UMVC3 was released, i already spent about 200+ hours into MVC3 as most of us here did. I was more than happy to spend that $40 on UMVC3.
I know that a good story mode is a good thing, but in reality after I see the scenes once i'll never see it again. I mean what's the point of playing fighting games if you're gonna play the AI anyway.
Persona 4 Arena's story mode was good but the only problem i had with it is distinguishing which is the cannon storyline since it is a sequel to Persona 4. Most of the characters have the same basic plotline except for labrys's story which serves as a prequel to the storyline. In my opinion, the only stories that are cannon are the main characters and labyrs. Though the P3 characters stories do explain the story a little bit more.
I could understand where some of you are coming from when it comes to not careing for fighting game story modes cause that is understandable, the main reason you play a fighting game in the first place is multiplayer, especially these days with online support but ya know other people do like the idea of a story mode, I only like them because they're fun to make fun of because the writers come up with the dumbest reasons to get two characters to fight eachother, DOA5 is a massive example of this and while MK9's story is considered awesome by many it has it's dumb moments as well like Jax's 2nd fight where the only thing that triggers it is Johnny Cage annoying him.
But in the context of a game based off of a comic book series a story mode is much more understandable to have in that case especially for people who don't read the comics and therefore don't know some characters like MVC3/UMVC3 for example, most people didn't like the addition of new Marvel characters simply because they don't know them, a story mode could've fixed it, instead all we got was a prologue comic and you know what? that probably would've benifitted Tatsunoko vs. Capcom the best since most people outside of Japan don't know who anyone there is, maybe Gotchaman and what's her face from Speed Racer but that's about it.
I remember hearing the same thing about MvC3 before it was released, and that turned out to be a massive bust. I don't think fighting games have to focus on the story, but if they advertise that they will, they better deliver. MvC3 has left me incredibly skeptical, after hearing stuff like this in interviews I'm actually more inclined NOT to believe it.
"the writer who is doing the Injustice: Gods Among Us prequel comic has praised the game's plot"
uh...dont you think he might be a bit biased?
