New Ouya console running emulated games such as Street Fighter 2 Turbo

The soon to be released Ouya is a game-less console that costs $99 and all the titles are free-to-try. Ouya will offer a large library of games, video/audio streams, on-demand apps and more that will all be playable on your television.

The Ouya console also runs the Android OS, which has a lot of emulators on the platform. This means that if you wanted you could emulate [while illegal] various games such as Street Fighter 2 Turbo or Super Mario 64.

While it's great that you can play emulated games, as it shows the power of the operation system, pirating games in any way has been frowned upon by many, as it illegal and does harm to the game companies in the long run. Hopefully game publishers and developers will see some opportunities with the Ouya, and figure out a way to bring home some of these classic titles at a good price point.

I've been pretty cynical about the Ouya. Yeah, it's $99, but what will I care to play on it? Minecraft?

You can emulate everything up to PSX on Android, iirc.

Is there a program to give emulator's online play?....

The OUYA will be my retro gaming box and a second streaming box for netflix, hulu, spotify, hbo and every other streaming service.

Oh, yeah, and within a year every indie game made will be released on it since its free and the big boxes cost tens of thousands. So ... if you like indie developers it's really a no brainer.

And it'll have chrome browsing.

Not really sure what people see in the Ouya, sure it's a small package but there is literally nothing it does that I can't do with a old PC hooked up to the TV running windows or linux. 90% of android exclusive games are "meh" and/or require touch screens. For streaming and emulating games you could easily do it (and do it BETTER) with a 10 year old PC.

This seems like the biggest scam ever. Don't know why people even funded this crap.

So this system will somehow promote game piracy? NO THANKS!

According to Ars Technica, the people behind it actually want you to hack it, customize it, and make it your own.

I see no problems with this. And online for a 16-bit game? Really? What is this, the Sega Channel?

# 13 gets it.

I was starting to wonder how does pirating the SNES version of SF2T is going to hurt Capcom.

I understand games like SF4 and SFxT.. but not SF2T or even 3rd Strike.

I can't really get excited about this. You're basically running a smartphone on your TV. Just use a computer. I know the OS is Indie friendly, but I don't want these companies limited by the already niche appeal of this console. Maybe it will be a success but it's a longshot. When I think about the Ouya I also think about Unity-built horror games; pretty similar and mediocre 9/10 times.

"all the titles are free-to-try." so like demos on XBL, PSN and the PC? WOW THAT INNOVATION

and those precious indie games the ouya defenders go on about: check out the indie channel on XBL. you want to buy a console for that? haha go ahead.
also nothing decent will appear on "pirate everything: the console" don't get your hopes up.

If this is how a game platform labels itself to the public I only see trouble for it in the future.

With so many confusions / out-right uneducated things being passed around, I thought I'd clarify a few things as a backer, amateaur developer and all around Android guy.

"They have their own controllers for it, but idk if they'll allow other peripherals..."

No hard facts, but with the system as hackable as it is, you can expect drivers to be out for something as popular as Madcatz sticks to be up within a year or so. Similar with other popular controllers.

"all the titles are free-to-try." so like demos on XBL, PSN and the PC? WOW THAT INNOVATION"

Not every game on XBOX is free-to-try. Yes, it means demos, but also things XBOX doesn't appreciate, like free-to-play models as well as outright free titles that would never get released on XBOX or PS3 due to costs.

"When I think about the Ouya I also think about Unity-built horror games; pretty similar and mediocre 9/10 times."

What about games like "Binding of Isaac"? Hotline Miami? FTL? Android is built into a lot of indie tools like Gamemaker and Construct. It means a simple port of a lot of games that are presently PC-based aren't released on XBOX because they are not XNA-based or can't afford the development and Microsoft fees.

"and those precious indie games the ouya defenders go on about: check out the indie channel on XBL."

XBLI doesn't play nice with other platforms. And p.s., there are still a lot of good games on that channel. Most indie games are on PC due to cost, but with Win8 many developers are looking at new pastures. With Android ports only a few extra hours of work vs months for other ports, we should see this market explode once developers realize this is their console, not the big boxes.

"Not really sure what people see in the Ouya, sure it's a small package but there is literally nothing it does that I can't do with a old PC hooked up to the TV running windows or linux".

That is a huge pain in the ass. Guzzles electricity and is an eye-sore and at least two to three times the cost of an OUYA if were talking an old computer. Plus upkeep.

"If this is how a game platform labels itself to the public I only see trouble for it in the future."

This is not an official video, it's a developer. This is what developers do with new tech. They test it. Will people use it for piracy? Yes. But so do XBOX's. Should we condemn XBOX's because people mod them?

hows does emulating 15-20 year old games hurt developers? do you know how many copies of SFII capcom has sold? they have squeezed that cow so dry she is pushing nothing but powdered milk. How many times should I buy games like Ocarina of time? bought the original, have it on 3ds, and I have it on gamecube. it comes to a point where, on principle alone, those who support these companies AND CONTINUE to support them, have earned some goodwill.

This will become a hotbed for emulation activity.

If people can do it, they will.

So much ignorance surrounding this console. The main thing people talk about is how Android games are right now and require touch screens and are mostly crappy mini-games. The games on the market are like that now because there isn't anything like the Ouya released yet. The SDKs were only released less than a month ago, give it some time and we'll be getting quality games for it. I can definitely see how indie devs will get involved with this considering the high costs of console dev compared to this.

@21
The Steam box will be a huge fail. Have you seen their announced price point? $1,000 for ok specs (don't count on running anything on High with that). At that price, you're better off buying a gaming rig and plugging it into your TV or just get a console. It will most likely be cheaper and it will last you longer than that crap.
