Maxwell McGee over at GameSpot wrote up a complete breakdown of the MLP: Fighting is Magic fighting game that has been making waves across all communities of the internet. The article starts from the very beginning of the game's origins and follows through with the dedication of the artists and engine coders as the game progresses through development. This step is where the rubber hits the road. All moves have received the MANE6 seal of approval and are drawn up one by one in Flash. Early on in this process, the team discovered that animating attacks that felt powerful with a pony's physiology was going to be tricky. As Wright explained, since ponies lack the T-shaped torso and shoulders of a human, they cannot attack with the sweeps and rotations that make punches look painful. Plus, since a pony's legs and torso are the same color, certain attacks just looked like a mess of color.
This final step is the long, difficult road each character must travel to make it into the game. It is an extremely complex, often heartbreaking journey as the vector-based, soft-edged images from Flash are made ready for the pixel-based, hard-edged world of 2D Fighter Maker 2002. As one of the team's animators, Wright has penned an extensive entry on MANE6's official site detailing how this is done. It is important to note that there is "some crying involved."
Once a character makes it into the game, the team can see if their attack designs--specifically the hit box layouts--work well in real combat. Naturally, the first few attempts didn't feel quite right and required extensive reshuffling. As Nappy explained, "When we drew up the hit boxes for these characters, they were basically square heads and huge rectangle bodies. When we put it in the engine, we found the game became very cross-up heavy. I don't think there has ever been a fighting game where the standard character design was this wide. That has been a fun challenge to play with."
Leave your feedback on the game regarding what you read from the article. There is also some interesting info pertaining to character creation and the struggle it takes to create a truly unique character.
Incoming hate ahead, I presume this will be like MK fighting where everyone has the same basic moveset (since they all have the same shape)
Rainbow Brite better have a badass cameo, and even the Mecha-Horse from the Sun/Star Stealer movie.
It would be sweet if they got Strawberry Shortcake in this as a secret character... or maybe even SHE-RA!!!
Wow this update was so obscure it took me 2 minutes to process what I just saw.
Anyway, not interested.
This would be just as funny as a 30 second animated spoof on youtube. Actually producing the game is a bit much.
This is unusually refreshing, though I wonder how little stress they'd have to deal with by simply making their own fighting game.
A single Cease and Desist story is all I need to know not to waste time making a high profile fan-work.
Street Fighter x Megaman is a rare example that should not be taken as gospel, not if you wanna see months of work get mothballed.
And bear in mind Hasbro already struck down a MLP fan-game, so it's actually likely they will strike soon enough.
What's next? Wheel of Fortune VS Jeopardy? Alex Trebek hits Pat Sajek with a Level 3 Hyper Question?
And I'm not a brony or anything but as far as presentation is concerned, this is the best looking indy fighter I've ever seen. I would think that Hasbro did have a hand in it. This makes it more saddening that they didn't go for an original work. It's quite charming, and brings to me thoughts of Kirby or Pokemon (which I guess is very fitting).
After Hasbro cans this I hope they aren't detoured from creating another work. I think these guys have 'vision' under all the MLP decor. We'll see.
Catalyst, please don't post this kind of stuff on EventHubs again. It may be a fighting game, but topics regarding that show have no place here, no matter if it's a fighting game or not.
I would love to see this have it's own spot in Evo 2013/2014 .... lol ... preferably with Yipes on commentary .... it's sad this might end up being more popular/more played than Skull Girls though ..... dunno if people can get sued over this even though it's a non-profit work though.
The game has been in development for over a year now. Hasbro knows about it and it isn't being canned, specifically because it's non-profit.
If Yipes commentates this, it'll be the greatest thing that ever happened to anything ever.
However, as a brony, myself, I must say: You've unleashed the hounds on the release of this story. I think it would have been better off not posted on EH.
You guys being against this on a shallow level have no idea you're possibly looking the birth of a worthy fighting game studio. The MLP aesthetics is besides the point.
Mane6 should be looked at in the future, I assure you. They're putting themselves out there and getting articles about them done. What are you doing? Hating? How's that working out for you?
Again I'm not a Brony, I don't watch the show. I am very versed of the connotations with the show and Brony culture (many actually unfair), so I know why many of you are jumping to certain conclusions.
But after reading the article and checking out the video, I tell you these guys have a 'spark'. Please get over your preconceived notions and try to acknowledge an American indy studio doing something for the fighting game genre - where our best contributions have been Mortal Kombat, Skullgirls, and Divekick (don't get me started).
This is one fighting game I WILL NEVER FREAKING PLAY
@26: Pretty much exactly what he said.
The game as of right now is still in the Alpha/Pre-Beta stages, but it's looking pretty neat so far. If this were any other brand of game that didn't have 'My Little Pony' slapped on it, you'd be saying 'OMG Indie Game SO HYPE'.
Seriously. I understand why you're going to hate on it, but please just look at it for what it is: A game, not an aspect of a TV Show.
This ain't Persona. lol

Pretty much this. The crazy thing is a literal joke like Divekick getting hype for no reason raises no eyebrows while most of this thread vomits hate toward something that actually looks legit at the stage it's in. More legit than Divekick. They also have mainstream dev sense regardless of the Pony stuff. I like these guys.
FGC closed minded as always, though. You can make an interesting fighting game with alternative mechanics and such, but it'll just be loli-fighter or now pony-fighter to people. They don't see how that pretty much makes them FPS Dude Bros.
Almost 30 hours of video from the September tournament!
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=...
The game is legit, and these guy's are busting their asses on something that's completely non-profit. They're going out of their way to make it tournament worthy, for a community that can't even bother with something even when it's absolutely free of charge.
This isn't about trying to stuff ponies down your throat, they are genuinely trying to give you a good fighting game to play.
Looks like they are putting a lot of effort into making a decent game for fans of the show...
But why do grown men like this pony cartoon? I don't get it, the target audience is little girls.
Great article. Glad you guys posted it. Putting indie developers in the spotlight is never a bad thing. Ignore the butthurt from the ignorant elitists.
I just saw some of the footage Jaxel posted, and the game looks pretty fun to me. I'd give it a shot.
Played the game a while ago versus the devs and it's actually a pretty decent game that plays alot like Skullgirls/MVC2 with launchers, etc. There were obviously some pretty OP moves for some of the ponies but they said they were working on getting the right balance.
With that being said, it's pretty telling who are fighting game fans and who are shallow children not willing to give a game a shot because of your asinine bias towards something. Who gives a fsck if it's MLP? If the game is solid and fun, then play it. I bet the same people trying to talk BS about this game are the same people playing BlazBlue and get upset when people call them weeaboos. Grow up children.
@43
Eh people have their reasons, but whatever it is-- don't knock em'. Otherwise you'd just be a bully.
It saddens me that the FGC is so quick to hate on anything that isn't a well-established series, or from a well-established company.
I know saying this is as good as talking to a brick wall, but I'll say it anyway: Base your opinions on its gameplay, not its aesthetics. Surely you guys have heard the old saying about book covers and judging?
God, the FLC is self-concious. You can play a game with burly men punching each other but not ponies? To people outside the FGC SFIV and Marvel look just as silly as the FGC hardcore thinks MLP and Smash look. We all are just playing games guys, seriously come off your imaginary thrones. These games boil down to spacing and strategy and Mane6 honestly the principles of fighting games down.
I played it at EVO 2012 and it was amazingly fun. Inventive with it's control scheme and risky in the use of "dog" shaped characters over the standard human. It's actually a really inventive perspective to take with a fighter. MLP art or not. Mane6 is growing into a real studio and this is their thesis. Great work Mane! You guys were a joy at EVO and I was honesty excited to see your game at EVO more than Infamous or Tekken 2 since at least your game is new and interesting, seeing the trolls come out just means your doing something right.
And keep these types of indie posts coming EH staff. If you don't, who will, SRK? That's a joke because EH is the only blog taking fighting game NEWS seriously. Keep it up. Haters gonna hate and all that.
@ EH
Nice troll job.
@ #40
Stuffing ponies down our throats? That's just wrong.
I wish EH would show things about the more violent games like Bloody Roar & Deadliest Warrior (bloody fights and chopped off limbs). Instead what do we get? MLP - WTF? Next they are going to have a article about Barbie's playhouse or something equally weak. Really, after a few years of great fighting games I think we are entering another decade of pure crap.
@57
Relax your butt-hole. It's not that serious.
@58
Are you really that ignorant of the crap-storms the subject matter causes? No offense intended, I'm just wondering.
I, for one, am looking forward to the finished design. They're putting a lot of effort into it and it shows.
Hey if you're gonna cover Skullgirls stuff and MLP: Fighting is magic, at least cover some Arcana Heart 3 stuff too , so we can complete the all girl fighting game trilogy on this site.
Arcana Heart 3: Love Max! is supposedly coming out in japanese arcades ( and I hope it gets a western release on home consoles too ) , an update to another solid game that deserves some attention, but obviously won't because most players deem themselves too cool/big to play a fighting game dominated by female characters , no matter how good the mechanics are..
Nice to see the FGC expanding their horizons....(sarcasm)
The game looks fun and comical to say the least.
Seeing games like this bring me back to the golden age of fighting games, where people enjoyed playing fighting game about ANYTHIN;giant beasts, people who turn into beast, even freaken Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles had their own fighting games and they were awesome!
Nowadays the American FGC market is only attracted to games if they see a hadoken or giant laser beam fly by the screen, and will use whatever excuse to justify not giving it a try; weeaboo, animu,
boobs,juggling, the list goes on...
I'll support anybody that puts honest to god effort into their passion, just call me when it on consoles.
Allow me to get my obligatory LMAO out of the way.
LMAOPONIESWTFLAWL!!!
Okay, while I have utterly no interest in playing/watching this, it's interesting to read about the process the team has to go through and I'm sure inspiring to like minded folk to see the success they are having thus far. Hopefully for their sake in particular, they aren't struck down with a C&D notice. And I would say something about the FGC needing to open its mind a little, but we know that I'd be wasting my time.
@48 You love Skullgirls but you say no to this? Such fraudulence.
flutter shy: yay
as long as they put passion into their game I'll support it. the more fighting games there are the more the community can expand.
Strength, violence and courage is healthy for the human race. It leads to stronger offspring and healthier minds.
Too much friendliness and tolerance is harmful, and leads to depression, failed relationships/marriages, and Zionist take-overs of entire nations.
Lol Well this all started when I saw a "my little pony" related article in a fighting game site. Scroll down to 72 pissed off comments, just what I expected.
F*cking bronies, dont ruin the FGC. He worked so hard building this community and you come bringing your sh*tty cartoons and failed memes? Go away, fags.
wha?! a game with EFF-ing PONIES?! Are you EFF-in' ki-AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Oh god!! I can't take this hate seriously! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
So you play fighting games with a green beast guy who shoots electricity, a talking raccoon, a lawyer, a giant-ass robot or even whatever the EFF nemises is, but bringing in ponies! THEN it becomes "WTF?!"
Now, if you don't mind. I'm gonna go practice playing that game where the main guy rund around stealing fire from other people who can use fire in an attempt to awaken an ancient snake-demon
#76
go away failed troll, your parents are dissapointed.
How am I'm trolling? I'm mocking how stupid the haters in this thread sound '_'; It's one thing to not be intrested in the game, but these reasons are utterly rediculous, not to mention how snobbish people are acting.
LMAO at all the hate. You guys don't realize games are gonna be games? It has potential to be one of the best indie FGs and has been carefully developed. This game is one of the main reasons I became a brony so f**k off you pony haters. I want this game to come out so I can see the converted pony players getting bodied and crying over Rainbow Dash hahahaha I'ma main Diamond Tiara lmao
@75 You should know that the FGC should be about playing to win and respecting a well made game that allows training and proper play of the game to be rewarded amongst other players, not bigot b****es whining over the internet because they act like if a game isn't within the confines of their mental wall, it's not even possibly reasonable for someone's hard work and general effort to be appreciated as FGC worthy. F**k, some of you people have scrub mentalities AND personalities..
I've just watched a footage of that game for a couple of minutes and I have to say that it looks like it plays well for a fighting game lol. However, it is pretty unusual to see a fighting game with that kind of theme. Too bad that thing doesn't suit me at all, especially games like Skullgirls and a game like Skullgirls is pretty solid as a fighting game but it's not for me. For casual gamers (particularly males), they will obviously see that game as a fighting game made for female gamers but, players who understand certain aspects of fighting games will see that game differently to the general casual gamers' views. All I can say is that it's unique in a way lol.
My god. People can't give anything a chance. I was indifferent to it when I first saw it, but I actually played it for a bit and it's actually a good fighter for a fan made project. Let me guess it has ponies in it so it's an automatic no?
Can't knock something you haven't touched/tried.
@MightyAfro
Well, that's how hypocritical some of the people could be. Some dig on anthropomorphic raccoons, hedgehogs, dinosaurs, and fat Italian plumbers in a fighting game, but those same people ridicule on ponies which are not much different. Not to mention they also dig on a game where you can only jump and kick.
When I first looked at the article, I scratched my head in ridicule, and then I saw your post and it knocked some sense back.
*Chaos Code has a cosplaying femboy.
*Guilty Gear has a crossdressing nun femboy.
*Blazblue has a ice shooting brother loving femboy (Amane was too obvious/awesome).
*Tekken has fighting Pandas and kangaroos.
Doesnt change the fact that these are great/solid fighting games. I'm honestly going to support this game because i don't wanna get lumped in with most of you idiots. "Let's show how childish 'My little Pony' is by acting like immature 8 year olds! It's pink! Kill it with fire...for MAN JUSTICE!" >:{|
actually...i like that quote i just made...
now if only Mane 6 can do a modern version of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZdRD3...
#78
Don't bother with this guy, he is a well-known hypocrite attempting to claim Shenanigans. The Hypocrisy amuses me when the game he likes gets insulted ^-^
@95: Hate is because it's about a game that's derived from a television show that has a large adult male audience, after which Lauren Faust, the genius behind Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and some of the Powerpuff Girls, has said multiple times that the show has no demographic. She made it with the intention of including all genders and ages. And it worked.
These guys are just acting stuck-up because they think ponies are the bane of the earth. I think Homestuck is terrible, but that doesn't mean I'd automatically shun a Homestuck fighting game if it was actually... you know... decent.
