Recently, a reader over on the Ask Capcom forum created a thread asking about leaking game information before it is officially released. I think there's several elements:
1. Professionalism. In general, people are "good" and want to act professionally, which would mean being trustworthy and not betraying confidences.
2. Our employment agreement includes an NDA. Violating it provides grounds for immediate termination. Our industry is VERY small. If you were terminated for such an activity, your ability to get future jobs, which typically require recommendations/references and explanations for why you left your last position, could be very impaired. I won't even mention potential legal exposure if damages are demonstrable.
And Internet anonymity isn't nearly as anonymous as you think is. Everything is tracked and it's not terribly difficult to narrow down who had access to certain information to and what possible vectors for compromise exist.
What's to leak? Capcom doesn't make games anymore other than SF games they're an overhyped video game publisher at this point.
Yeah but I hope they don't put accidental and on purpose leaks together.
For example the UMvC3 one was a mistake, of course it was huge but still, so its culprit should be punished but not as much as people that just release information for money or for being "cool".
@1
What? Monster Hunter Tri, Resident Evil and Devil May Cry are Capcom's real money maker. Heck, lost planet and dragons dogma make more money than their fighting games. They survived 10 years with out SF, they can survive another 10.
If you want a new Megam Man game these days you gotta make it yourself #Kappa
@2: To be fair, the list was quite accurate for being leaked 4 months before release.

Whatever happened to Lupinko anyway?
This is fair. But you can never really tell what leaks are real or just someone trying to get attention anyway.
@15
Capcom never sends a cease and desist to any fan game. That's pretty much one of the only good things left in the company which will probably change if their administration changes. Either way the point isn't about dev support, it's about Capcom no longer making quality products or listening to their fans. You know your company has a problem if some of the only good things coming out of your company is from fans making things for you for free.
"1. Professionalism. In general, people are "good" and want to act professionally, which would mean being trustworthy and not betraying confidences."
::Sells us an Alpha version of SFxT::
::Sells us Pay-to-Win Gems::
::Sells us On-Disc Characters::
::Sells us On-Disc Costumes::
::Realizes SFxT Alpha sucks so updates it to Beta so they can sell more gems::
You sold us out a long time ago Cashcom.
@ #19
And yet my DLC characters aren't working, my colors aren't working, online play is broken and the game is still patched to 1.06.
I'd happily cope with the DLC bullsh*t if at least the game worked as intended and was fully supported.
But yeah, people are just crying right?
My shop built 3 of the transformer cars for the 2nd film and a couple idiots stayed late one night to snag a couple pics for their FB page. FBI got involved, prosecuted them big time. Fines over 50k jail time and yeah, try working in a fab shop that makes movie cars again. Hell I have to put stickers over my phones cameras or leave it in the jeep. Big time trouble, but some info can be sold for large amounts of money, but not worth it at all.
-SFxT is hella average
-RE6 was mediocre;
-So was DmC (sadly), already has DLC which could've been on-disc free contect (BUT NAH, LET ME MILK YOU SOME MORE BRO)
-SSF4 is getting boring(as opposed to 3rd Strike).
and
-UMVC3 has a boring cast, putting MODOK aside.. hence everyone crying out for an update.
Think I have every right to cry.
@ 23 opinions don't equal facts. Get your life together
The only good fighting game capcom have done was SSF4 the rest was a joke in my opinion.this gen sucks when Capcom makes game old school capcom was so much better
@27 So.....SSF Turbo,SFA series,The Marvel Series(from COTA to MVC2)and Rival Schools/Justice Series are a joke?!?!?!?!?!
Hold on one second.....Ah,here it is....
@28
I said the fighting games of this Gen sucks that Capcom made not back then you fool I'm talking about UMC3 and SFXT suck in my opinion
Wait I forgot about TVC for the Win that was a good game
Dem vectors for compromise. I see yo vectors biych.
Thats so lame who actually cares about leak list anyway it just gets people hyped for the game. I say it aint all thay serious game companys should ne more laid back not all anal about things like this if it happens it happens goodness its not making or brealing sells poor quality games are. Example why is sfxt horrible,why is sf4 worse than sf3. Why is resi 5 graphics better than 6. Why is mvc origins lacking games it should have . Bu tv I rathed play 1 and 2 than to play mvc3. Not that its a bad gams but because they made alot of poor decisions then want me to pay$20 for outfits n to see zero dressed like megaman,yeah right!!!!!!!!!! Its been far past the time they dropped the price of all the dlc they have.not talkin bout sales either.stop patch balancing just stop o goodness. work on your quality capcom stop half doin stuff. Everyone demands you product because they kno they quality can be better.
"OMG AKUMA DID YOU LEAK YOUR PARTICIPATION INTO THE GAME ?!"
"Dude, it was obvious I was going to be in, don't b-"
"TERMINATION !
People are taking OPINION about what they don't like from Capcom and scrubbing FACTS of what Capcom actually did that's beneficial to the FGC. It's a bit pathetic.
Going deeper:
a) Everyone and their fking G-Ma has done on-disc dlc already. If you whine about one title's "dlc", most likely there's another one that you already paid for in another game. Only exclusion so far are Nintendo's games. They did it a few times. It blew up in their faces. How they'll handle it further down the line, I don't know, but even then, other companies (even Sega for crying out loud) utilized/are utilizing on-disc dlc. It's NOT just Capcom, so lets stop acting like it is.
b) No one remembers the 3 events Capcom's held? The free game given to us over the free C&D that could have been? Them attempting to fight for UMVC3 updates PURELY out of fans asking for it (and a lil $$$, but let's face it, they don't have to even entertain you with even a message on the subject)? Hiring FGC members for job opportunities? Adding new mechanics into each fighter they churn out instead of the usual "kind of like MvC, but THIS game's got this too" crap that other 2D fighters poofs up on a regular? Finally trying to bring more Monster Hunter to the West? Letting Brazil have a taste of that 25th Anniversary hype when they could've just left them? Making fighting games more accessible, and thus more popular? Reviving fighting games in general? I mean, look how big this paragraph got and all I'm doing is listing crap with one extended sentence in parenthesis, and this one explaining it. What other company's ever been this close to its fans, and what company can make a paragraph even close to this size? Come on, give it a try.
c) Saying "oh, this game wasn't good enough for me" isn't a negative on the company's part, although SF X TKN's release and how it was handled was indeed a major negative (that was too much hype shot in the leg there). Still, your personal view on how good a game is isn't a negative for the company in question unless it's significant enough to make a case for it. The issue is that most people that hate on DmC can't do this, because the game's solid enough to not have any major complaints. SF X TKN's been patched relentlessly and it's been getting positive feedback and respectable criticism unlike before where it was just insane hate all day ere day, and RE's trying to survive in a day and age where even Dead Space can't stay true to its horror routes. I mean, Dead Space of all games...
@Malda; you are so right, In Malda we believe, you are Jesus, Mohammed or someone like them. Happy Now?
@17
"it's about Capcom no longer making quality products or listening to their fans"
yeah, i wish they did ports of older games with online play like the fans want and tone down OP techs in current games like SFxT and AE. oh, wait...
confirmed troll.
smack dat 10 hour trolololo here
@4
Resident Evil is a great series...well between the original and 4. 5 (while I still enjoyed the game), I will admit was pushing it, but 6 just knocked the series off the mountain top! It's the only RE game I haven't felt compelled to finish. The only "campaign" (I hate that f--kin word) I completed was Leon's. Can't wait to try RE:R on PS3. Never got to play it, but I hear they kinda went back to the roots of RE.
I can't believe people continue to cry obout DLC stuff on Disc. Come on guys, don't act like.... Most of people here are men so, get over that. Next month will be the 1st anniversary of SFxT and some children continue to whine? For some bison bucks?
@MALDA
AGREED! SSFIV is the last great fighting game they made IMHO. Tried to get in SFxT2013, but I genuinely do not like the game. I gave up on the MvC series after 2 (but I'll gladly play 2 over 3). Tried to get into Marvel 3, but that game is just utter ridiculousness. So with me, it's SSFIV, and all SF games before it (except the EX series).
@Chipndip, I think this guy is right. I remember 25th SF anniversary was free for anyone wanting to enter the tourney.
Prizes were pretty good from top 16 (150$) to the 1st place (2500$)+ a airplane ticket.
We can say Capcom already paid for all scandals they did with SFxT
@Chrissuchiwa
Happy for what I'm just giving my opinion your all making a big deal for no reason
THEY ALREADY SAID on-disc DLC was a failed experiment. We won. Now, it's in the past for CAPCOM, and us, and how great is it that they listened!?
@23, Terrorzone, you are the first person besides mwah, who understands that MODOK is the only character dripping with personality in all of the new cast! So true. As soon as someone bitches about MODOK being in, they are in the idiot zone to me.
@38 - Pretty much agreed - going to fall on deaf ears I'm sure, but all good points.
To the actual topic - is this really surprising to anyone? When you get hired literally ANYWHERE that has a product that is "hush hush", especially in entertainment and/or electronics, you'll be signing an NDA that pretty much gives them the right to punch you in the nuts repeatedly for talking about it. Those leaks don't seem damaging on the surface, but they are to a business, especially if they have things like events or marketing plans to reveal those things.
They're *usually* hype to fans, but that is still a double-edged sword, and even that hype isn't guaranteed (and honestly usually is the opposite).
Personally I wouldn't want to leak a damn thing for the sake of my career. Word of mouth can be very damaging to finding a future gig even if you somehow are not fired.
When comes to videogame business in general, alot of things happen.
When it comes to fighter games, they're not getting proper treatment when comes to testing the game out and always targeting the release date which the console market is causing this unbalancement when it comes to fighter games. Every Fighter Game needs to be tested out differently, places like E3 Comicon Tokyo Game Show etc. don't help the required balance that arcades & betas do well.
For DLC in general, DLC/Expansion Packs were always meant to be paid since 1990s with PC games and Expansion Packs. DLC is something that adds more content, even not having stuff being left behind and end up being unuse content. When it comes to Disc-Locked content, stuff was always meant to be locked away since the early years of gaming even Arcades had something called Time release which has certain characters locked away until you let the Arcade run on for days even months, even within the cartridge and disc there will always be stuff inside which sever the purpose of content that was suppose to be or left out content. When comes to DLC & Disc Locked together, this Disc Locked content as DLC was going for quite awhile Capcom isn't alone with this other companies have been doing this. Since certain years there have been times where the DLC doesn't work proper or there are times that the person who didn't buy the DLC will be cutoff from other gamers that bought the DLC, the Disc Locked method is the way that even if certain people didn't buy the DLC they can still play with other people that bought DLC. When comes to decision with how much the DLC cost, it will always be up to Sony & Microsoft with their online stores.
When comes to Capcom fan request, there have been plently of certain news topics that Capcom is willing to take requests from patching games even bring the games back or make a new game that hasn't got a game in awhile, trust me there is certain news that makes it proof.
Another thing is that part of the problem with Capcom is the Japanese Gaming Companies in general, which the Japanese Gaming are struggling and are far behind when comes to games. Even the Japanese are trying way too hard to please the Western Countries, even involving betraying their own culture and themselves.
It worries me that we are just getting in an age where games in general will just never satisfy anyone's expectations and begin to die out. I really hope that never happens but I think to ensure it, we should take the good and the bad of each game in. I mean it pretty much happened to Capcom's fighting games before... If this continues, history may indeed repeat itself.
I spy my favorite Eventhubs user just HAWKING this comment section. XD
You know what? I've yet to see so much negative reaction from the Tekken house. It's crazy how the same company that revitalize the FGC Capcom. Has also stirred up so much animosity. Who comes to mind at a time like this is Katsuriho Hharada-San just the loyalty from his part, and continuous customers satisfaction. I would like to say, Thank for keep it ''REAL''!
And Internet anonymity isn't nearly as anonymous as you think is. Everything is tracked and it's not terribly difficult to narrow down who had access to certain information to and what possible vectors for compromise exist.
Sure, in this case catching a few employees who leak info is easy because they're single individuals and their internet activity of leaking easily stands out.
Now the millions of people that pirate Capcom games? You can track that all day long and try to find out who it is but 1. That's millions of people to catch and 2. "Everything is tracked"? That doesn't sound constitutional to me.
@38, i hope you don't expect me to read all that lol
I was fired from Capcom for leaking the UMvC3 news. Hope you guys enjoyed it.
Lupinko was Snow thats why he doesnt host the ask capcom anymore
