Siliconera recently conducted an interview the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series producer, Dave Cox, to discuss how the combat system will work in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS title, Mirror of Fate. Interestingly enough, Cox states that the influence for this 2.5D action adventure game's fighting mechanics actually stem from classic 2D fighters such as Street Fighter and Samurai Shodown. “The combat was something we really struggled to get right, the feeling of power and the fluidity was particularly difficult to replicate,” Cox shared with Siliconera. “We looked at 2D fighting games like Street Fighter and Samurai Shodown, and we tried extensive play testing in order to just get the feel right.”
“The combat has a 2D fighting game quality to it and we have kept the strategic element that people really liked, where you mix up your magic abilities and combine them with the sub weapons. This is a game you have to think about enemies and a game where you need to learn the moves and use the tools we give you. Otherwise you are going to die a lot! Its definitely not a button masher and studying the bestiary and your travel book will pay dividends later on."
Knowing what your enemy is capable of and which tools of your's work best are factors akin to what we deal with in fighting game matches all the time. It will be interesting to see how an action adventure game such as Castlevania will implement these ideas into their combat system.
Those of you who are avid fans of both Castlevania and 2D fighers, it's looking like there may be a bit more incentive to check this game out now.
Just waiting for the PS3/360 port confirmation. Loving this new Castlevania games.
Lord of Shadow already pissed me off (just my opinion, don't get mad) as a fan of the older series, but I hope Mirror of Fate can rekindle my love for these games.
I don't think Mirror of Fate will be getting a PS3 or 360 port. All those HD assets they have, were mostly used when making the DS version, before down scaling. This will most likely stay on the 3DS.
Here's to hoping it's even more awesome than LoS.
The new 3d castlevania games are not castlevania games, they were just a game that was in development that kojima thought why not put castlevania on its title, pretty much ruined the series, hopefully Koji Igarashi gets to make castlevania games again.
I though his buddy kratos teach gabriel.
Whatever... the Lords of shadow saga isnt that bad but isnt as good as the original saga, I really want a new castlevania game from IGA team and michiru yamane in the music please. I hope Mirror of fate calm a little that "metroidvania" hungry
I'm super finnicky about what action games I play, they have to feel similar to Ninja Gaiden Black or I won't like them.
Coming from that PoV, I LOVED Castlevania:LoS. It was challenging enthralling and beautiful. However the 2 Shadow of the Colossus-esque titan fights were pretty terrible. At least it was a really small part of the game.
with all due respect, fûck castleroid games. That style predated the series since 1996 with SoTN, so I'm glad there's a change in the series for once. Ecclesia was a good start and LoS seems good enough to keep people interested (regardless of how "stupid" the plot seems to be for some people).
Man, so many conservative people when it comes to Castlevania:
"If Alucard is not the protagonist the game sucks". I guess that's why the Belmont clan have been the protagonists since the beginning of the franchise.
"If it isn't Michiru Yamane the music sucks". Of course Yamane rules, and her magnum opus was SotN's OST, released 17 years ago. How come we haven't get over it is beyond my understanding.
Seriously, people, is change in Castlevania such a bad thing?? Are we so stuck up in the past we aren't able to look forward??
@1 Clearly you've never played Castlevania Rondo of Blood or at least played as Richter often in Symphony of the Night because he has a shoryuken which I belive returned in Harmony of Despair.
Castlevania games discussion on EH site....
/weeps with joy/
"Just waiting for the PS3/360 port confirmation."
^This.
"but I'm still waiting for the game with the awaited 1999 final battle against Dracula in the original timeline."
^ This too.
"[Fact:]The new 3d castlevania games are not castlevania games, they were just a game that was in development that kojima [sic: Konami] thought why not put castlevania on its title..."
^This three.
Also a fan of Castlevania Series. I am so glad I was wrong of lords of Shadow. Originally I had thought it was a god of war rip off, but I am glad, there is a reason why he was so violent, now that I know. This is a mother of all plot twists and even bigger plot twist on the 3ds mirror of fate. looking forward to it.
"They will pay... for I AM the Dragon, Dracul, I'm the prince of darkness and that is my vengeance"
I think Castlevania LOS was one of the very few successful reboots (Hoping Tomb Raider be the same). It had a far better story than previous games, perfect voice acting (The voice acting is on the same level as Metal Gear), the gameplay was fun, the stages were beautifully amazing and great character design. I'm rally anticipating LOS2 and still don't get why people are crying about this game.
I was so glad i got Los kojimas supervision brought a game dripping with quality. I think the combat system is very underrated and can be expanded. It's very hard to do alot of cool spells in the game cause on a harder diffculty your forced to recycle less powerful or cool looking moves.
Only thing just noticed about the story in this game is that
it will contradict the events that happened in Castlevania 3 curse of darkness,(don't wiki story in game if you don't want spoilers) but since it's a reboot I guess it's fair play.
