Crystal Dynamics' Global Brand Director, Karl Stewart, recently did a question and answer session where he discusses various things about Lara Croft. Importantly enough, SuperBot had approached Crystal Dynamics about putting their character in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
LaraRocks2: Will Lara ever be featured in Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale?
Karl Steward: With regards to the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale question. We love what the guys and girls over at Sony have achieved with ASBR, they even approached us about the possibility of including Lara. But to be honest to us it all boiled down to timing. We really set out to create a reboot where the first time you experienced playing as Lara Croft it was in our game on March 5th and nowhere else. We’ll see what happens in the future.
If PlayStation All-Stars' release was a few months later, after Tomb Raider 9's it's possible we would have seen Lara Croft in the game.
Via Edios Games' forums.
So why not in DLC since they are already few one planned ?
And I don't think too many reboot characters (like Dante or here Lara) would have been a good idea, even if they are "big".
Players want to found their iconic and beloved character in that type of game, with the look and gameplay they know, not only his name on a brand new character.
@4
That's what naive people think.
That DLC is randomly conceptualized after the games release... LOL!
Nope, Nope, Nope...... (Well sometimes with old games like SSF4)
This article proves what myself, and the other folks with brains on EH are always saying.
"On disk or Off Disk, DLC is planned, budgeted, developed, PRE RELEASE!"
You see guys, that's how Billion dollar companies do business. They plan it all in advance. And the creators (who are already in the dev chair) make and integrate it all at the same time.
Now, they just have to hide it in your HD:)
@6
I agree with what you say and am aware of that reality, but I don't see the need of sounding like a total pompous douche-bag.
"That's what naive people think"
"This article proves what myself, and the other folks with brains on EH are always saying."
Lol come on man, we're all here for the same reason. Looking down on your peers because they don't "know" something you do is more naive than not knowing that DLC is planned pre-release.
she should have been in it anywayz, but this game was all about selling out and making that money!
I remember they saying a straight "No, we don't want Lara in that game" also there's a deal with MS, giving exclusive dlc to the 360.
@13 The only thing came from their twitter say "Yeah...no."
They can change their minds and what not from what the PR guy handling their twitter does.
Still good to hear Superbot/Sony did try to get her.
This shows the problem with PSABR... Nintendo gets characters with their iconic looks because most of them are first party... Sony is reduced to being a stepping stool for an ad campaign because most of their iconic characters aren't owned by them.
I think PSABR would have been better served if it were given more time and maybe released this May or June so it wouldn't have had to battle the stiff competition of last November... poor release scheduling, even with it being close to Christmas.
And she'd have been bottom-tier just so they could appeal to the same sickos that all the trailers for her latest game have been trying to reel in.
#16 Bottom tier...Why? In fact,I think it would be the opposite.
Top Tier=More people buying her.
@15 main difference with nintendo "rosterwise" is that most SSB has fewer franchises represented, i.e Mario Bros franchise has 5 characters in, in PSASBR the only franchise with 2 characters in is inFamous, sony could fill the game with characters from the franchises already in, but they expected more support from 3rd parties.
New Lara looks better than old Lara IMO. More natural and realistic looking.
The old Lara was nothing more than a joke its no wonder why the franchise almost died.the new Lara looks natural and more believable imo
"We’ll see what happens in the future." Clearly DLC!!! Just add a costume pack that has the old Lara, and make the moves from the OLD LARA. It's just the face that has changed but she should be the same... I would prefer the old one cause of her move-set, the new one would be weird... I mean as of trailers I have not seen this new one do 1 but ONE! Acrobatic move like the old one did and neither have I seen hand to hand combat... All I see are guns and knives... Not even collectible relics like the old one had... But whatever just put her with that face but the old moves and a costume that is the old one that's all they should do...
@4 Yes, in fact that's what it is "supposed" to be, despite what some people would like to believe in regards to DLC. Yet most companies today see it more as a way to scam and sell less for more. :/
It could still happen here tough, Arkaham City released "Harley Quinn's revenge" DLC Pack almost 10 months after the initial game release, maybe here they could work characters like Lara or Crash and release them later on this year.
@10 There are times that you have to either accept the character's new looks (even if not many people agree) or forget the character all together. Life is never meant to be fair. I mean when it came to characters everyone has their recent or newer appearence, their based off newer games or soon to be release characters. From Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal PS3), Cole (Infamous 2), Heihachi (Tekken Tag 2), Raiden (Metal Gear Rising: Reveangence), & Sir Daniel (MediEvil: Resurrection) etc. If Lara Croft appears expect to see her Tomb Raider (2013) look, If Spyro appears (unlikely) expect to see his Skylanders look.
@24 Don't expect too much, because if Lara was to appear she would have her moves based off the new Tomb Raider game. Like Dante's moves is based of the DmC reboot game, Hero Cole & Evil Cole moves are based off Infamous 2.
Wait so the reboot releases in March...And there's supposed to be DLC announcements in March for PS All-Stars. Hm...
This just reitterates the thought that if they had only delayed release they could have made a better product with better cast.
@5 "Dante still plays like Dante. Lara would have still played like Lara. Slight appearance changes isn't the end of the world. Get used to change."
New Dante and old Dante doesn't share the same weapons and skills, same for Lara.
The topic of this game is playing with our video game idol, or I don't see how you can be a fan of a character you never played.
We don't talk about new game but about PASBR, and there is no point of playing it if they were just new characters IMO.
Why does Lara Croft look like Hilary Swank with collagen injections? She's supposed to be a British archaeologist.
@34 From what I've heard from a TV show I use to watch, is that this is Lara Croft's early years before she became the expert archaeologist that I bet everyone knew. Think of it as when you become an archaeologist it will be your first time and sometimes life may never perpare you.
@33 The whole videogame idol, even if the characters uses their recent appeareance (that some people may not like) they would still be videogame idol because of its history of how Playstation made more money in the PS1 days, and the newer appeareance would be related to the new games. There are also times that people need to forget about their childhood memories.
@28 Here's the thing: Sweet Tooth is still the same psychotic clown from Twisted Metal, Heihachi is still the same fighter, even if he aged throughout the series (still would like to know how did he get younger) and Raiden is still the same character as MGS4. The characters' "new looks" didn't change who they are initially.
Lara Croft isn't the same Lara I grew up with, just like Dante isn't the same Dante I grew up with. While I can understand why Capcom picked new Dante for this game (old Dante is already featured in UMvC3), there's no reason to NOT pick the old Lara, especially how they WILL screw up her image in the reboot. Y'know, if it was the same Lara, but just stuck in an island after a plane crash, that would have passed, because Lara would still be her old self, not a whiny kid. Give me the Lara I've gotten for Guardian of Light instead. People keep saying that it's supposed to be the prequel, but they're wrong: they're resetting the serie from scratch and make the new game an Uncharted clone.
@Aluppoj
I agree with the blatant lies by publishers. But I think it also comes down to a few other factors.
I'm still confused as to how they can't have Lara in the game because the game is being released in March when you have Raiden from MG:RR which is released this week. A month difference is still technically the same thing. I don't get that point....
I understand. She would've convinced me to purchase the game. Could never get invested while playing the demo.
@36 I can understand that the character is not the same as you remember, heck I got a friend that had a problem with the New Dante.
All I can say is if Playstation Allstars was not released in 2012 or somewhere when the new Tomb Raider reboot was annouced, you would've got the Guardian of Light look. But with Playstation Allstars characters, they would use newer looks or even the reboot looks to relate certain games even the ones not release. If they end up using the new Lara (very likely), all you can do is blame Crystal Dynamics for your problems. Because Playstation Allstars is pretty much of a reflection.
@38 Well if Lara was annouce as a DLC character, they would use Lara for the new Tomb Raider game even Lara use to had a history related to Playstation from the commercials. Whats your idea of mascots anyway? Because Playstation Allstars already include like Toro of Playstation Japan, Polygon Man the original former mascot, heck even most of the roster is Playstation icon.
