Justin Wong updates community on his Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown challenge from Sega Evil Geniuses' Justin Wong updated everyone on the status of his Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown challenge that Sega offered him over on Sega's Blog. If you missed it, Sega challenged Justin Wong to participate in their Sega Cup 2013 Virtua Fighter tournament on April 20th.

This is what he had to say.

I started playing Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown last week and can honestly say it has been a lot of fun so far. I’m still learning about the game but here [after the jump] is a stream of me practicing with some friends. It’s roughly 4 hours of me learning Jacky combos, chatting with other VF5 FS players, and facing off against Floe, another amazing fighting game player.

To prepare for the Sega Cup on April 20th I will also be training with some SoCal VF players from time to time and playing online matches with players from across the country. As you can see, I decided to start playing as Jacky. I like his fighting style and was told he is a good character to start with, but I also like that he is strong enough to compete at the highest levels. I have seen top players like Denkai use him successfully so it seemed like a strategic choice for me.

While I don’t expect to win the Sega Cup, I’m excited at the challenge and I hope that by doing my best I can show you guys that I am committed to being accepted in your community.

He's gonna use Jacky in the Sega Cup? I rarely see good Jacky players in VF tournaments in the US. I know there are plenty in Japan.

Floe : The Amazing Fighting Game Player

sounds like a good title for a book or movie. whatever it is it has to be purely fiction though. animated too, just in case people start to think its real.

I'm not sure Floe's the best sparring partner for this. Or any game, really. To be fair, I always hear he's much better in casuals. And yes, there are legions of scrubby Jacky players here in the US; perhaps Justin can break the trend.

Of course, Justin could have gotten a nice head start if he'd played me in VF5 Vanilla back in Summer 2011... ALBUQUERQUE FGC SAYS LET'S GO... WHY YOU DUCKIN' ME, SON???

Of course he's using Jacky, bleh. 'Strong enough to compete', that describes everybody in the game...except for maybe Lei-Fei. I don't think I've seen a single person playing Lei-Fei at the arcades in Tokyo.

Oh well, whatever, any exposure for the game is good.

Remember when Jwong won the PDP MK9 tournament after only two weeks of training with Floe? Let's hope the VF5 community is made up of sterner stuff than the MK9 community.

This is a great way for beginners to see how a top player learns a new game from scratch. People who haven't played Virtua Fighter may want to try it and go through the learning process along with JWong while watching his stream. I haven't watched much but I did notice LAAkira giving both general and character specific tips that are great for people to listen to while they're grinding online or in the dojo.

Articles like these are a million times better than creeper bikini mods and copypaste ingame videos for youtube money.

I just started playing vf and i need a training regime to take me to the next level. I play jacky and sarah i've been neglecting eileen for some reason (maybe because i can't handle more than two chars). I like justin as a player and i'm loving vf it's a win win in my book. I can't wait to watch this sega cup thang.

P.S i think justin will get bodied but that's half the fun isn't it? He's a high profile player putting himself out there I hope he gets a warm reception from the vf scene regardless of his performance.

@5 I think Floe is an overrated player as much as the next guy. But tbh I think he is an excellent theory fighter and can help Justin learn the little details and concepts behind VF as he does understand game systems pretty well.

I hear that. I have a friend who is all 'lol, VF looks alright, but nobody plays it, I'm not gonna play a game that's not popular'. What kind of logic is that. 'I'm not going to play it because nobody plays it.'

don't knock Floe, he's gdlk in casuals. XD

@25: the reasoning is that if a game is not popular, the competition is much more scarce. this leads to "not that much money in it", "gameplay stagnates", etc. not saying i agree with him, as I often play old games that do not have large followings anymore because they're fun.

He didn't even give it a chance though. It went from 'it looks cool, I'll buy it when it comes out.' to 'Not enough people bought it, so I don't care.'. Also, we're currently in Japan, where people DO play it. (and they're really really good...)
