Last week the Sony brawler PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was released overseas in Japan. According to Siliconera, during the first week of sales, the PlayStation 3 version only sold 11,758 copies.
@al3ubble We aren't, but there's still DLC we made that you haven't seen yet!
— SuperBotEnt (@SuperBotEnt) February 6, 2013
There is currently no word on what this DLC could potentially be, however, if future DLC retains the same style as the Kat and Emmett pack, we could possibly see more characters added to the roster and new playable stages.
This article is rather misleading. Despite the low number of sales it actually charted like number 3 or 4 overall in Japan. Their sales numbers are typically far lower than somewhere like the US.
@3
You have to look at the other stuff on the list though, everything above it had about 3-to-5 times as many sales.
@5
This is pretty much the reason; the game is full of characters that a western audience would like, but no where near as many that appeal to the Japanese audience.
I know most of the game devs are based in Japan but they seem to focus their attention there too much.
Sega threw out the whole American continuity of Sonic the Hedgehog (minus Robotnik being the real name and Eggman being the nickname) when making the jump to 3D and the fandom remains split to this day.
it didnt sell well in japan cause theyre all playing smash brothers instead.
When comes to character wise, there are times that they need to get the rights with other companies like Square Enix with the Final Fantasy characters.
There is a possiblity that Cloud could be in the game relating to the 17th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII.

this website gots some interesting predicition. From Etna (Nippon Ichi Software), Teddie (Atlus).
Etna from Disgaea
Teddie from Persona 4
Also another thing to keep in mind, is when it comes to release dates can be very demanding not giving couple of the team not enough time to put almost everyone in the final game lets be glad DLC is there.
Wow, that's why Sony got pissed off and gave it to Santa Monica... :$
The problems of this game go way beyond just the roster. The mechanics are bad, music is bad, menus are boring, and the whole points of specials only makes it all worse. Wanna make this game at the very least, likable? Change the menus and whole layout, and copy the mechanics SSB has. The game is a ripoff already, so you might as well so it right. Let us have ring outs, and let us have combos that serve a purpose other than charging your special bar, and then lose because you missed the super anyways. The music is inevitably awful and theres no fixing that. But to top it all, add more characters people actually care about. Then, finally, people like myself will go ahead and play the game, and it wont be played only by blinded Sony fanboys. And trust me, I'm a Sony fan myself, but this game stops being fun after 5 minutes. While SSB never stops being fun. Which is a shame because if they would've ripped off SSB in a good way, I would've loved it as much as I love SSB. Be smart and at least make a mode where you have a life bar and not that retarded special only kills, that'll make the experience much more enjoyable.
@ trolls saying the game is terrible, probably without having ever played it and just being the usual piggy backing eventhubs losers
Online Tony (seth player) loves the game and competes in it at the weekly tournaments in Cali, so grow up already and just buy it stop shunning something that is fun and a great game, dumb trolls
@12
And they don't really have to do much. Just make the characters have attacks that only do like 2-5% max damage, allowing them to keep the combos they already have. Heck they can even leave the specials there, making it the only way to score 15-30% damage to even make a ring out depending by the special. The menu? Just add more options to go around and play and allow us to choose a music from our fav game to listen in the menu.. I mean they already have them recorded on the game. Also after every single loading the game makes, CHANGE THE FREAKING BACKGROUND CHARACTER IMAGE!!! I get soo bored having to watch Fat Princess every time I come back... -.-
Maybe give the game a more global feel than make it so "American" seriously 80% of the roster is from a US company.
Also new Heihachi, Big Daddy, Dante and Raiden are only in the game for promotional reasons at least respect the fans enough to put in characters they would like instead of making your game a commercial...
They seriously need to add a ring out mode to this game that doesn't need supers.
@16 Whats your idea of ORIGINAL? hmm?
If its because of the gameplay concept, look at Mortal or KOF their not original as Street Fighter. Look at Tekken thats not original as Virtua Fighter.
Im sure its a great game but it just does'nt make me want to play/buy it. Someone would have to lock me in a room and give me the game to enjoy it because there is nothign here that makes me say "I GOT TO HAVE IT!!!" I think if the presentation was better i'd buy a PS3 just for it but its not a system seller for me by any means. Again I am sure its a great game though.
@everyone thoes who say that the game needs ring outs or no super kills, should not have the right to speak or express yourself.
Because every developer should have the right to decide their own game, while cry baby trolls need to do themselves a favor and disappear from the FGC.
i lol'd at the idiots who say they shouldve went more original xD
my only gripe with this game is the OP supers some characters have and the stages. Stages screw me over so damn much.
1. add ring outs.
2. add better characters.
these are the two reasons this game failed. They really picked some decent, not amazing but meh at best characters, and the re-skin of Dante didn't help either. They should have stuck with more iconic characters and should have spent more time working on main stay characters. Spyro, Crash, Lara, all very big names.
And ring outs is common sense, makes the hyper kills is a horrible idea.
However people who love this game will continue to defend it regardless of how facts prove otherwise.
I was reluctant to buy the game used for my kid brother and all I can say is that, besides the roster, the game isn't all that bad, but it does need some tweaking.
They should start by including a collision box between characters so that they aren't walking through one another when not attacking. They should also do what Capcom did to rolls in SFxTK; make evading easier to punish by removing a few frames of invincibility. And finally, include a mode where each character have HP to drain. It honestly wouldn't hurt to include it.
Ring outs won't do much for the game for obvious reason. The game wasn't build around this feature even though there are certain levels were you can fall off and die. The problem is that you can't grab ledges and kickback isn't based around damage taken like in Smash. It's consistent for all moves.
@23 The ring outs is just your opinion, the super kills is not a horrible idea I know how to play the game.
Do you even know what it takes to own the characters, I bet you don't. Your idea of more iconic characters, are from third party companies even some companies wouldn't care about you.
Like Crash & Spyro, the biggest problem of owning them is dealing with Activision, since the company plays hard ball or asking some crazy demand, plus with Spyro is no longer the main character of Skylanders.
Lara Croft is very unlikely to appear due to Crystal Dynamics said "NO", and the Crystal Dynamics made a deal with Microsoft to release the Tomb Raider DLC for Xbox 360 first like COD, like Skyrim etc.
When comes to business peoples opinion on characters, fan requests, and childhood dreams always comes dead last. Because of the reality of the videogame marketing.
I hope this means there is a chance Abe from Oddworld will make it as DLC sometime later on. Maybe a Demon's Souls rep as well.
Should have added a Persona character. Anything Persona related in Japan would sell like hotcakes
like someone already said, most of the current roster appeals to the West more
This game sucks, not surprised it didn't sell well. I was actually pretty hyped for it at first, seeing as it had Raiden in it. Incredibly disappointed with the mechanics. Would not recommend this game to anyone really. Not really surprised it didn't sell well in Japan, they usually prefer good fighting games. =P
@27 You do remember that Abe as a DLC character was cancelled, right.
@28 Well a Persona character is great possiblity, because Atlus want to put their characters in the game. All it takes is the character to be approved.
@17
New Heihachi? You must be young... young Heihachi IS the original Heihachi... they even have his classic Tekken 2 Alt.
Anyway, I got this game day one and it isn't horrible. It is very annoying though that certain characters are clearly imbalanced with their crazy meter build and hit priority (Kratos) and characters that have super easy combos into their Level 1s (Raiden) or just have very imbalanced supers (e.g., Sly)...The game feels half-baked. Needed at least another 6months - 12months in the oven.
I enjoyed PSAS whilst it lasted.
The game is just lacking in every way. The content is terrible, the graphics are below average, the fanservice is half-assed and full of errors, the netcode is trash, every patch breaks just as many things as it fixes (caught in a loop over never-ending patches)
The gameplay is also flawed. Characters with hit-confirms into lvl 1 Supers just dominate. There's no reason for them to use their other Supers. In fact, that's my problem with the game, some of the Supers are absolutely useless or completely situational. None of them should be like that. It's bad enough when I only have 3 main viable ways to kill an opponent, but if one or more of my Supers are crap? It gets boring real fast. Just the whole fighting mechanics and combo system as a whole are really limiting. Once you learn a viable AP burst combo, that's mainly what you'll be aiming for most of the time. Almost everything worthwhile about the game was discovered within the first month.
The items are also boring. The problem with just having AP being the deciding factor of everything means that too many of the items just do the same thing.
Don't even get me started on the training mode. Worst training mode I've seen in a "fighting game" in years. It doesn't even have the most basic of options, like setting the dummy to air tech a certain way or attack you with a specific attack.
The game feels like a Beta and it's main problem is that it's stuck in a limbo between trying to be a fanservice party fighter and a competitive game. Aiming to be competitive was a waste of time. The FGC were never going to adopt this game. Everything was sucked out of the game for the sake of the core gameplay, which isn't even that impressive anyway.
I hate comparing it to Smash, but Smash (at least Melee) surpasses it every way. Even in gameplay depth.

"Online Tony (seth player) loves the game and competes in it at the weekly tournaments in Cali, so grow up already and just buy it stop shunning something that is fun and a great game, dumb trolls"
OMG!!! Online Tony loves the game and competes in it?!?! Wow...that changes everything!
PS: Damn, you are an idiot!
The game isn't perfect, but total garbage? I don't think so...
They could have added ring outs, but only 1 or 2 stages would allow that as the rest is enclosed. Stage hazards that KO you could be an alternative.
As for characters, you guys need to remember that Sony has to emphasize on 1st-party characters, not 3rd-parties, like these ones:
- Ico vs Wander (Shadow of the Colossus)
- Arc (Arc the Lad) vs Jaster Rogue (Rogue Galaxy)
- Leonard (White Knight Chronicles) vs Dart (Legend of Dragoon)
- Rau Utu (Mark of Kri) vs Toan (Dark Cloud)
- Finn (Sorcery) vs Ellen (Folklore)
- Vahn (Legend of Legaia) vs Rudy Roughnight (Wild Arms)
That's the whole point. The "Playstation" in the title stands more for Sony as a company than as a publisher, so it's logical that they go for 1st-parties. Beside, it's not like they're missing some major ones (Crash and Spyro are now 3rd-parties).
The only 3rd-parties that would make sense are:
- Crash Bandicoot vs Spyro the Dragon (twist Activision's greedy arm until it snaps if necessary)
The rest, I couldn't care less. Lara Croft, right... after seeing how they'll ruin her image in the reboot, she'll come off just as an insult as the new Dante is... Cloud? I don't honestly know. The FF characters have already been featured in a lot of crossovers already, so maybe SE didn't want to overdo it. Beside, it's not a game that SE, or any of the 3rd-parties benefit greatly from, not to mention that SE hasn't been doing great lately, mainly due to FFXIV.
@39 Just proves you guys are piggy backing, real FGC members like it but the tools on eventhubs don't so you continue to troll on the game :-) as expected by myself internet FGC is just a bunch of children trying to show each other their lil penis' and prove its large.
@42 .......... No.... Wrong per usual FGC tool #34572, i've had the game since the beta and pre-ordered it months in advance because I, unlike you FGC tools, do not need Justin Wong or PR Rog to tell me how or what to play. I was just letting you in on a little secret, the real FGC likes it, the eventhubs internet trolls, like yourself, are just stupid :-)
How hard is it to not be a dumb tool and just accept a game you may not be good at is awesome? Yea your 25 years of SF experinece (and many years of no vagina) do not transfer to allstars, but maybe you could try something new.... nah of course not cause your tools.
@41 Look your idea of original is delusional, look since the times in the years between the 80s and 90s there will always be a game similar mechanics. Look at games between Sonic The Hedgehog and Jazz Jackrabbit because their mechanics involves speeding through levels, has the jump pads, and goes through a goal that has their faces.
Look between Mario Kart series & Sonic & All-Stars Racing uses the kart racing, with power ups.
If you think every game needs to be original then maybe Tekken shouldn't exist, Mortal Kombat shouldn't exist, not even KOF shouldn't exist, Soul Calibur shouldn't exist, & Skullgirls shouldn't exist.
Tekken has a similar mechanic to Virtua Fighter, In Tekken 6 uses a Rage system like Samurai Shodown and uses certain stage hazards like DOA.
Mortal Kombat is like a Street Fighter clone with killing involve.
KOF series shouldn't exist because its another Street Fighter clone with teammates.
Soul Calibur is a Virtua Fighter clone with weapons, and in SCIV became a clone of Fighting Vipers.
Skull Girls is a Marvel vs Capcom clone.
Lets get serious, people you need to not make a big deal and stop proving your point of whats original or whats a clone. Whats more important is the game being different in its own right, heck people like you need to loosen up and know when to have fun like me.
Who cares the if its like Smash, and its barely a clone. Its like how it is like fighter games uses similar gameplay, but Playstation All-Stars is original because there is no ring outs, the Super Kills brings a new step of how we should play games its always about using your brain and strategy.
Oh PS. Party game is not a right word for SSB, Battle Stadium DON, Jump Allstars, PSAS etc.
Whats really a party game is something like Mario party.
@45
Nicely said. Incoming FGC hate in... 3.... 2... 1....
@34
No I'm not young but there is an obvious difference between new Heihachi (Maybe Young Heihachi is a better term?) and the old one I've played every Tekken game to date (Well except Tekken Tag Tournament 2) and the Heihachi from PS All Stars is obviously the youth serum Heihachi from Tekken Tag Tournament 2 because of the goatee no other Heihachi has it but him. And yes he has his alternative from Tekken 2 but so does Dante (classic Dante from DMC 1-3) and Raiden (Gray Fox from MGS 1) still doesn't make them any less of a promotion from DMC and MGSR: R.
@46 Yeah, heck if people speak ill of a certain game because of so little things I reflect it right back.
I played Playstation All-Stars from Private Beta, Public Beta, and pre order the game.
I've did my fair share of gaming research & history.
@26, 30, 45, 48
You also don't know much either... Lara Croft was never denied, it has been said countless of times that it was a twit taken out of context and as everybody does they panic and thats what they think that happened. When you go to twitter and see the message it was meant for a question that said if their big announcement was Lara's appearance on PSASBR, and their answer was "YEAAA... NO!" When their announcement was something from the Tomb Raider newest game,they NEVER meant that Lara would never be in this game.
@50 Fair enough, can't disagree.
Another thing in general, I heard from the prediction website that "Square Enix has final say" since Crystal Dynamics are part of Square Enix.
@51
Yeah they do, I just hope they say yes. Or make a sequel to PSASBR much more serious and cool looking to get game companys interested. Is soo stupid that some characters can't get in cause the company thinks it'll demoralize the character and make it look ridiculous when losing against another. For example, a fight of Lara against Drake is something everyone wants to see. If Lara loses... Square Enix.. I can only imagine the rage... Although I think Lara would win.
@52 The future is unknown, but a sequel for PSASBR is a good chance. However maybe a long time, or that we will have to wait. Sometimes even sequels can do better than their original counter part. When comes to characters getting the rights from first & third parties will never be easy because not everyone is on track. the demoralize character can be the creators own reason, look at Ico team & Sora.
Check my comment #10 I have a prediciton website.
rofl nothing can't get better than #44's comments. Quick tip, dude: when you try to make a point and you intend to be taken seriously you just can't insult the people who disagree with you. It makes you look bad. Now the only thing I'm waiting for is people to keep fueling you because DAYUMN you're hella pissed off when someone badmouths this game.
Now, @47:
"yes he has his alternative from Tekken 2 but so does Dante [...] and Raiden [...] still doesn't make them any less of a promotion from DMC and MGSR: R."
Your point being...? Sony doing that with games on their console is bad because... why??
You must be a gamer with some decades behind your back, so I can understand this kind of practice pisses you off, but imagine all 12, 13 year old kids that don't know about either franchise: whether it's DMC or Metal Gear, if the characters are appealing enough for them, they'll look for the games where these two appear. Konami sells a bit, Capcom raises their earnings a little, and Sony walks out a couple dimes richer. We all win.
It's business, man. Think about it
#54
I get that its a business the problem is that crossover games are heavily reliant on nostalgia and fans of the licenses involved. So the problem is that if you start "selling out" you need you need to be smart about it. Sony used characters that at the time already have/had fan backlash behind them it, that coupled with a game that many already view as nothing more than a SSB clone and those elements can definitely work against you and I believe that is what happened here.
Also Nintendo played it smart and had the fans heavily involved something I missed from Sony.
