According to Edge-Online, the Xbox 720 will allegedly require an internet connection to function. While we do not have an official word, a ton of information has been leaking for the upcoming console from it's 50 GB Blu-ray discs to the console's hardware specs.I'm guessing the tournament system of the future will have to be some standardised but custom rig. Or we could all go back to the arcade cabinets.
This rumor can't be true. Access to broadband in the US is horrible. A recent FCC report said 1/3 of the countries population is without access to high speed internet and now I'm supposed to believe MS is going to release a console that won't work in 1 out of 3 US households? The new Xbox might have an option for always on internet for cloud saving and automatic updates similar to the PS3 Plus feature but it won't be required.
Wii U is the way forward. Both Sony and Microsoft's new consoles have had some rumours giving some bad news. From console-disc linking to this. Besides Sticks have been made for Wii U so controllers won't even be an issue. Although, it is just a rumour so who knows.
I know they are just rumors but if any of the rumors about the next Xbox are true I will be skipping it. 24/7 needed internet to play games? Can't play used or borrowed games due to a activation key?
No way is Microsoft that stupid. They can't be anything but a rumor.
@#1
It really does... I mean what is the sense of it to do this to players? Many console owners (360 and PS3 both) have no internet connectivity whatsoever. Although minimal it still is present in our society. Some people are just old school and play offline games so yeah this is horrible. As for #2 its okay to troll the fact that this makes the new MS system seem unplayable but according to rumors of the ps4 is no better substitute. I'm not waging a console war/argument with you, I'm just saying it would be wise to troll after this becomes a reality dont you think?
Thats not the only problem, apparently you wont be able to play 2nd hand games on it to....the games will come with an activation code that allows you to play the game on only 1 console lol so it wont even be possible to share a game disc on different consoles at a tournament. The 720 will fail if all this is true
It won't happen. Neither Sony or Microsoft is willing to commit corporate suicide. If one console does this the other console won't and we all know that 90% of gamers will flock to whichever console doesn't do these stupid things.
Meaning that neither company will do this. These rumors are beyond ridiculous.
Don't worry dudes. We at camp PlayStation will welcome you back. We won't even charge you for wireless play, nor will we be salty about people dissing PSN. Not sure why you'd want to play games on a box with a huge ass X on it anyway. Come back to PlayStation...it's the FGC's destination.
2012 FCC Report: 119 Million America's do not have broadband internet. 19 Million live in areas where it is unavailable. That's like 14 times the population of NYC in this country alone not counting the UK and other places that couldn't use the new Xbox. Can't see MS making a product that such a large chunk of people couldn't use.
I mean... Playstation 3 was the console tourny standard right? For most of them anyway.
I don't get why people are saying
"Well I'm going to PS4". Did you guys forget(?):
http://www.eventhubs.com/images/2013/...
You're stepping out of a fire into a slightly less hot fire but you've still lost...your um...fugg I don't know where I was going with analogy anymore.
Edit: I thought of one!
You may have somehow managed to roll a one on a die only to be told to move one space back. So essentially, you're still in the exact same position. That works...anyone? Screw it.
Heard this rumor earlier today, though it isn't exactly new, this kind of thing and more have been speculated about both the "720" and "PS4" for a few months now. In any case, I doubt Microsoft will implement this. Same with being unable to play used games/content; outside of a really cheap budget version at least. Even if it wasn't true I'd be more likely to get a 'PS4' anyways, unless it has major flaws or whatever.
PS2 ruled the roost anyway.
All of you 360 kids just jumped ship because you became impatient waiting for PS3.
Welcome home guys.
Anyway. 360 (while good for fighters) is looking really long in the tooth. GTA 5 on five disks? C'mon now.
Sony was truly thinking of the future by implementing BluRay. They were my first DVD player back in the day also.
The new direction in the gaming world is less bang for more buck so this seems like a pretty obvious move as does the ps rumors which I think are more likely true. The diablo 3 fiasco on a huge scale like for an entire console and not just 1 game is gonna be funny to watch if this is the way things are going at Microsoft
^
They won't be horrible specs.
Apparently they'll be marginally behind the PS4 though. And we all know what little that meant THIS gen.
How is this news? This is just a rumor from a magazine and website that nobody reads or cares about. I really doubt Microsoft is dumb enough to implement this because a good chuck of America don't have internet access.
This is another dumb article just like the Playstation 4 rumor about marrying the game discs to user's ID. http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2013/ja...
Good job SFlip. *SMH*
Imagine if this happens and again the Capcom games run better in it, but they won't be tournament standard cause of the internet connection issue.
but once again: Calm down and wait. Nothing is certain.

Yeah, feels like something Kotaku would spawn, cmon Ehubs
Of course it's news, many people sent tips to have things like this be published, so don't try and blame the EH staff for it.
As for this, I'll stick with PC if the rumours are true.
wow whats going on, xbox needing internet connection to function, rumor also has it that ps4 disk will only work with one ps4 console and will not work with another, you know what it is, its all about the money at the end of the day, bussiness is whats taking over , sad so very sad
Speculation on an undetermined function for a yet to be revealed future console in a hypothetical situation. Not a helpful article.
@8
I completely agree. Also, can someone explain to me on how you would need a internet connection just for the machine to function. If the game is already downloaded to the console, will it still work? If not and I still need access to the internet that`s just plain stupid.
#43 LOL good one.
I'm willing to bet that whoever came up with this piss-poor rumor is a PS3 fanboy. They're unhappy that the PS4 is going to restrict their games to one console only so they conceived a transparent lie in a moronic attempt to sway gamers.
This rumor is just an excuse for PS3 owners to flame their Xbox 360 counterparts.
Say these games are disc linked. If you had a system that failed on you, wouldn't that render your game useless?
@mhf #41
Have 2 Masterballs in your bag. Talk to the old man who teaches you how to use Pokeballs. Fly to Celadon City and buy 10 lemonades. Then use strength on the truck.... only when there's a full moon and you have Pikablu in your party.
I know this all just a rumour and that Kotaku can his my hairy arse, I just wanted to point how dumb it is to act like PS4 wouldn't be screwing you over like this when we saw what Sony patented. So....
I don't think they could be that stupid and purposely alienate their potential consumers like that. If it does turn out to be true, I won't bother buying this thing and take my business back to Sony this generation.
Screw that! Microsoft better HOPE its a rumor because I won't be buying.
@48 Its just another DRM bullcrap set up. Forcing people to play online, thus locked into paying montly fees and content just to enjoy a game. Still its a rumor and i'll wait for Microsofts response to this.
@39 Those kinds of tournaments are authorized by Blizzard them self, im sure they have special accounts just for them. You think Capcom is gonna do the same for us little folks? I doubt.
Again, its rumors. Wait and see what happens.
This can't be true. If so, it would have to be the worst idea ever. I'm a Playstation guy myself but just saying. If the PS4 comes with a "disc-locked to one machine function" then I will not be buying it.
Here is hoping Wii U will get all the fighters since the PS4 is rumored to have the same things as well. Then again we won't find out until the 20th of this month when Sony Live Streams the PS4's announcement.
I hope this is true. It would certainly end the argument regarding which console should be used at tournaments as well as the need for dual-modded fightsticks. Go for, Microsoft. I dare you.
lol using "fag" as a form of insult
Real classy
1: nothing to worry about until a new fighting game is announced for 1 of these systems.
2: c'mon eventhubs posting stories of speculation. just wait for the actual console announcement, before you blow up.
It's not going to be true.
There are so many people that have never hooked up an Xbox to the internet. This would just be economical suicide. Absolutely nothing about this is even believable as a rumor.
Nothing new here really... people is stupid enough to pay for Live and PSN sucks because "its free" right?... This could be one of the stupid attempts of Microsoft to keep the ads all the time in the console and also to prevent piracy by forcing the console online all the time.
Bad rumor is bad. There are parts of the world that do not yet have high speed internet yet. Also not everyone is connected to Xbox live, why would a console manufacturer do this? Especially if the next PlayStation is going to release around the same time. From what I understand, based on several gaming sources, is that the next generation of consoles will be more social experiences. There is talks that the next PlayStation might have a share feature that allows you to record and upload 15 seconds of gameplay at anytime. Maybe many core features like Dlc or downloaded games require an internet connection.
I've heard the same rumors about the PS4 and I didn't believe them then. If either MS or Sony is this stupid then, I'll just stick to Wii U and PC this generation.
heard about this over a year ago when the Brazilian or something of that nature console came out that was all online. Microsoft rep said that sounds like a great idea, and it just proves they are money hungry.
I mean Windows is charging us to play angry birds now................
all this internet connection crap is not going to help sony or micro soft if i would need my console to be connected to the internet for it to work, i am not buying any console anymore, have they done their research well to find out if internet is cheap everywhere in the world, if they don't care about that, trust me we in Nigeria would not buy any consoles any more. i am still very shocked that the ps vita is meant to be a hand held and i can't copy files into it without connecting the transferring console or pc to the internet, one reason it is not selling. well i don't really matter since i am one person. that's why hackers will keep excelling trying to restrict a public device, how does that work, implementation and market strategy on scale of 10 is 0.
@67 i won't. i only buy consoles for fighting games anyways. i have no reason to buy these unless good fighting games are announced.
I really hate to say this, but... was it really a good idea to post this...?
It's basically paved the way to console wars.
@ all saying its a fake rumor
It isn't, this idea has been stated multiple times before today's "rumor" or better known as statement made by an employee.
When Microsoft released windows 8 they stated how an all online game network or console would allow people to play games at a reduced price by streaming the games to your console. Get ready boys and girls this is going to happen. They love this cloud based BS thanks to my least favorite guy ever Steve Jobs. Once iCloud started allowing everything you do on your phone, Mac, and Ipad to get sent to all other devices Microsoft started their own always online cloud ideas and an internet only gaming network was very high on their list of ideas.
@60 Go find another person to start an argument with. I know you're itching for one. I'm not in the mood today.
#13 That's true for the PS4 as well.
At any case, i bought a total of about 30 games this gen and only have 12 of those games still in my possession (well, until my add on craigslist gets some interest). The last new game i bought was MvC3.
I have no room to make any complaints with the way developers are making their consoles as i don't plan on purchasing any console again. However, if this rumors turns out to be true then i don't see how good this would be for the business in the long run.
Remain incredulous.
PC>consoles
But it is pretty exciting, they will be updated. All this is heresay. I would put 0 thought into it at this point.
For all we know it can be a counter console rumor that originated at SONY.
It might not even be called 720. We know nothing.
My...are the video game companies really this stupid...People are not made of money people. You may think that just because they got your system but that does not mean they are.
"Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft is continuing to invest heavily in motion-control interfaces, and a new, more reliably responsive Kinect will also ship alongside the next Xbox."
smh
Yeah, I don't actually think this is going to happen. Piracy of Xbox games isn't as big a problem as piracy of PC games. Why would Microsoft go down the same route as Blizzard and require always-online when the benefits aren't even that clear?
Just a lot of smoke, methinks.
I'm gonna go ahead and say it right now.
F*** next gen consoles. They're most likely all overpriced, gimmicky and complete with reduced functionality, including a lack of any backwards compatibility.
They can kiss my motha****** ass with that BS. But I hope they prove me wrong.
PS2 fo lyfe.
This wont be true, they cant seriously hope to do this and lose audiences without the internet. I really doubt this will be the case. With the amount of untrue rumors already flying around about next gen consoles we should really just ignore everything until they actually release indefinite information.
The article did its job look at all the comments :/
@87
True, but even at those high prices they were taking a LOSS on each console, and hoping to make up that loss in software sales!
They truly believed in their machine. And it paid off.
They came into this gen a full year after X-Box and have not only closed the sales gap, but also WON the format war between BluRay and HDdvd.
Sony knew what was up. They were thinking ahead big time with PS3. That's why our 1080p HD BluRay games look better and have better storage compacity.
X-Box is a good machine, but it was obvious they rushed to the market to grab PS2 users as quickly as they could.
It -is- a rumour, so I'll just say this.
Only about 45% of consoles purchased are online. "Always online" would be a pretty stupid idea, but to be honest not unlikely for FUTURE generations when the worldwide broadband situation picks up.
As far as the pre-owned thing goes, I was on Dtoid talking about this and a lot of people are calling bull. Industry predictors have largely been right about attempts to throttle the pre-owned industry - Just look at the failure of the PSP go and you'll see all the evidence you need
What #99 said is true. This is to stop used games.
Normally, I hate the people who say 'PC Master Race' but...
PC Master Race, in this case.
