Sven has had influence over fighting game rosters, will likely defer to team in future - Disney has not been a factor in Marvel discussions

Sven has had influence over fighting game rosters, will likely defer to team in future - Disney has not been a factor in Marvel discussions Capcom USA Vice President, Christian Svensson, has had some say/influence over past fighting game rosters, he said via the Capcom Forums. He noted that as the head of North American sales, which is the largest market for fighting games, while he's had input in the past — in the future — he'll likely defer to the strategic fighting group, which consists of Matt Dahlgren, Derek Neal, Neidel "Haunts" Crisan and Peter "Combofiend" Rosas.

Also, he said that by and large Capcom has dealt with the same great people at Marvel, in regards to their fighting games, and Disney hasn't been a factor in any conversations. This was in response to concerns from the community that Disney was having some kind of negative impact on potential updates to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Bs957: Sven, do you have a say in choosing characters for fighting games?

Svensson: As the head of North American sales (the largest fighting market) I have had influence/say in past titles but for the future I will probably defer to our strategic fighting group which consists of Matt Dahlgren, Derek Neal, Neidel Crisan and Peter Rosas when it comes to our recommendations.

That said, at the end of the day the team makes the final calls.

Master Hao: Regarding UMvC3 updates... does Disney have a say in updates and what not? And are they easy to work with at all?

I get this suspicious feeling Disney is being a bummer about their half of the game...

Svensson: By and large we've dealt with all of the same great people at Marvel we always have. Disney has not been a factor in any conversations.

Disney doesn't care bout anything Marvel does, they just want the money they make.

fogopop said on February 1, 2013 at 11:44 a.m.

Damn, well there goes my hope of playing as Goofy, Mickey, and Donald in MVC4.

Meety said on February 1, 2013 at 12:02 p.m.

In other words, Disney does not want to do anything with UMvC3 other than the money they get from it.

Combofiend request Gambit and Psylocke please #BibleThump

SnakeX said on February 1, 2013 at 1:07 p.m.

That's a good group Sven has there. Knowing that Combofiend will have some influence in the character selection process for future titles is awesome.

Also, people need to stop asking about Disney as if they have any real influence over Marvel's activities. Yes Marvel is a subsidiary of Disney, but the company still operates on its own. Keep in mind that when Disney "bought" Marvel, they purchased all Marvel stocks from previous shareholders and turned those into more Disney stocks, essentially. It was not a full company merger wherein Marvel was dissolved into Disney or anything like that. Marvel is still very much its own company, it is simply under Disney's massive umbrella like ABC, Pixar, ESPN, Lucasfilms, and others are.
So basically stop asking if Disney is pulling the strings, people. They're not.

badjab326 said on February 1, 2013 at 1:21 p.m.

@4 no.

Fix Nova glitch. Make it so both player's can do the V. Joe infinite glitch, and keep infinites.

They barely impact the game, but they really help chars like Iron Man.

MALDA_IS_BACK said on February 1, 2013 at 1:24 p.m.

I like WB and DC more I can't believe Disney own Marvel soul now :-(

hazelnut1112 said on February 1, 2013 at 1:29 p.m.

Funny why people have a say in this. All they did was buy Marvel so they can keep their stuff, Disney still lets Marvel do their own thing. Just might use some of Marvel for promotional crossovers and what not.

htownboss23 said on February 1, 2013 at 1:31 p.m.

Add mickey mouse to a crossover game and let him transform with a satsi no hadu

KissofPoison said on February 1, 2013 at 1:37 p.m.

So now we know who the culprit is behind the crappy selection of characters from SFxT on street fighters side....

Not that I don't like them but I'm sure many would rather have had newer faces as opposed to SF4 carryovers. I want some of the other faces who were in SFA and SF3 to come back. Urien/Gill/Necro/Sodom/Maki.

And def keep Makoto around I love her

DoubleShoryukenATK said on February 1, 2013 at 2:36 p.m.

So does this mean that Sven had any input on Megaman being in the roster of Marvel VS Capcom 3, or even a grain of? I thought it was all Nitsuma at first.

Marvel really needs to show their symbiotes some love. Introduce Carnage, or Toxin into the Marvel VS Capcom series. We just had a couple of miniseries starring these characters not long ago.

About Disney, their biggest impact seems to be about the films since logically its their biggest financial invest to what they own. Marvel wants to use any game they have to promote their movies and comicbooks, yet Jean Grey's Dark Phoenix is nowhere to be seen in either. Somehow without explanation she made it into the roster and nearly turned the game inside out > >. How was her fanbase strong enough to demand her inclusion?

NyuBomber said on February 1, 2013 at 3:09 p.m.

Disney lets Marvel do it's own thing as long as it makes money and draws in customers, that much is evidenced by the comics. Ass in the fact that Disney's been out of the video game market, aside from social games and Epic Mickey, for a looooong time, and I doubt they care beyond a quarterly earnings report, as long as the numbers are in the black.

@15 He's part of a team, and we have no clue who he suggested or was against, if any.

@16: Jean Grey's been on fan wishlists for the Vs. series for a looong time, alongside the likes of Thor and Ghost Rider. Like her or not she's one of the original X-Men, has an entire famous saga of the X-Men/Marvel mythos centering on her, and she has a fanbase. More than enough weight to get in, her actual implementation not withstanding.

No Hannah Montana vs Darth Vader vs Spiderman vs Ryu then? :(

Jennyfromtheblock said on February 1, 2013 at 5:13 p.m.

@16:Marvel had a massive event involving the Phoenix Force recently and Jean Grey at least a young version of her is around right now.

When it comes to characters, it should only be decided by the creators. People like marketing team (example: Sven), and fans has no say over what character should appear in a game.

When it comes to fighter games & characters, story should always be important because it always decide the outcome of the character. Whats mostly problem with fighter games and characters is that the story in general doesn't go full details, heck the stories don't follow a path similar to all anime & manga titles. Anime & Manga titles are perfect examples when it comes to characters & story it decides the outcome and how the story plays out.

Heck I belive when it comes to characters and fighter games, it always needs very detail story that decides the outcome of the character and the creators are exclusively responsible for the story & characters. While the fans can hope for nothing, they don't even know of how to make the perfect game and know the meaning of business nor copyright laws.

As much as I personally think UMVC3 is the best fighting game this generation I think the game is fine the way it is, I don't think another update is needed. I'm not saying they shouldn't do it I'm just saying I think the game is just fine where it is now.

Okay message to TrueGamingGuru saying that fans should have no say over what character should be in the game is bull and you know it we are the ones who is going to play it what's point of buying the game if it doesn't give us what we want out of the game its like your saying we should buy what they want us to buy rather than what we like as fans what your saying is complete bull shoot mines well buy an apple covered in crap cause they want you to instead of buying an apple that you actually want get outta here

TrueGamingGuru said on February 2, 2013 at 12:18 a.m.

@25 You & the other fans wouldn't understand how business works or what it really takes to be a passionate game developer.

When comes to characters, its always up to the creators of what will be in the game. Like I said Story is way more important when it comes to characters, because it decides their outcome. Besides there are things that fans can't always have what they want, because of multiple reasons.

When it comes to crossover games, its always up to creators or IP holders to decide of what character is going to represent them in this certain fighter game. There are times where either the creator or IP holders can say no to a character to appear in a crossover, because they're one: not interest, two: they don't want their character to appear in this game for certain reasons, three: if relationships was completely broken between either people or companies.

TrueGamingGuru said on February 2, 2013 at 12:18 a.m.

@25 Heck if fans started to create games, then things will fall apart for them in heart beat, would just turn tail and runaway living in sadness.
Reason One: is that they would put in a hoard of characters which would be very unbalanced to gameplay, the characters element wouldn't blend too well like if they don't belong the game, or they'll make moves that the character never do nor reflect the game they came from.
Reason Two: is that when comes to ownership of characters, dealing with other creator & IP holder is extremely hard (at certain parts) from getting permission, contracts, and royalty. If the fan uses the character without their permission, breaks the contract, or did something to their character that they hate the fan will get into trouble by the creators or certain companies even leading the fan to get sued by creators or companies the fan would lose their job having the game cancelled, pay a major fine, or possibly go to jail.
Reason Three: Is the game itself. Like they won't add new gameplay element (example comeback, customization, stages etc.) which would be bland and very boring that certain gamers are not interest or disappointed, Story wise is that they might end up not being very well detail or that it would make no sense, the character wouldn't stand out and ends up being the worst character in history like Bubsy the Bobcat, they would make the online very terrible and broken, or when it comes to DLC they would try to make something that either no tech would've handle it, ends up with glitches crashes and completely unplayable.
Final Reason: is the main companies (makes consoles) and money.
When comes to release dates, there are times that DLC is very important to the main companies to their online stores, there are times where they require them to make certain things to become DLC and has to be paid so the main companies get their share of the profit if fans refuse they will up losing money and main companies will not support them, the main companies would want them to release the game at the exact deadline that is required them to get it release which might involve working overtime or not getting to put in of what they wanted to put in, and in order to make games they would end up paying like somewhere thousands of dollars which is extremely expensive there are times where they can't always take risk other wise they would being bank rupt.

Everything in reality is something that the professionals is the only people that decides our characters.

Cacom should use this opportunity to swipe the Disney licenses again. Remember the ducktales, chip n dale games?
