The donation drive for breast cancer research for Evo 2013's 8th game slot officially ended a little bit ago at midnight.Super Smash Bros. Melee - $94,683
Skullgirls - $78,760
Street Fighter II Super Turbo - $39,567

GG Melee
Things really went down the wire in the last few min
Hope no one gets Blacklisted over this by taking back there donations
ST apparently got investigated on this
I might have Marth in my name, but I'm sad to see Skullgirls lose. :S....oh well I least I got to hear Erin Fitzgerald say the Parasoul Line I wanted when I donated =D

Melee won't be the 8th game.
The benefit of this is that TriForce is trying to get SG an honorary 9th spot at Evo since it made a loooot of money as well. Still, as Wizard said, they have to wait and see if people don't back out of the donations before anyone really wins. Was really hoping SG would win though, it needs the help more than a really old established game. >.>

Old News, Already Confirmed Fake. However, still a scumbag move regardless. Every Community has there bad apples
And the most boring game won, oh well. Congratulations to those who enjoy it.
#14 & #15
apparently you missed Apex 2013 TOP 8 for melee...things were REALLY hype and intense...perfect for tournaments like EVO.
but well I guess most people can't take this seriously...it's a shame, because melee is one of the most difficult games to master.
I'm sincerely not trying to hate, but Smash winning over Skullgirls or ST is a tragedy. I remember the years when both Melee and Brawl were held at EVO previously and it was extremely dry. I'd like to think that I understand the game on a competitive level, but I'm sorry it's just not exciting to watch. I'd like to see the Cannon's maybe make room for ST or Skullgirls(hopefully both) since they really went above and beyond to try and get their game in. At the end of the day, it was for a good cause and Smash won fair and square, however I can't help but feel disheartened at the overwhelming lack of excitement this will likely bring.
too many people who like serious fighting games were so confident their game would win, they didn't donate and expected other fans to do that. alas.
#24:
do you even know what you are talking about? I played melee on a pretty high level and I'm also a very decent SFIV player. I can tell you that SFIV doesn't even come close to the precision in execution needed for melee. melee has ALOT of hidden game mechanics most people don't even know about, so unless you have any idea about how difficult of a game melee is, you shouldn't be stating your "opinion" on a matter you have no clue of.
btw. ANY fighting game is played on a casual level for 99% of the players...super smash bros. is just an example of a pretty fun game, even if you don't have any skill at all. that doesn't mean you can't play a game like that on a really high competitive level.
I wonder what the results will look like after all the bad checks are removed. And if that was a big fake donation to SFTurbo those people should be ashamed. Not only is it bad sportsman ship it's also severe chain yankery to the Turbo fans
@24 Seriously though, Melee is waaaaay more deep then you first think. I am so hype for melee, and I am sure they are going to make it hype for evo. I wish we were no longer splitted up! Fighting Games United!
Good for Melee fans, but there are so many great fighters that should have taken that spot instead, and yeah, Skullgirls needed the spotlight so much more.
The good thing about Melee on EVO is that now I know when I'll be making a sandwich in between matches, I couldn't care less for the game, and I doubt that being at EVO will make it suddenly a FGC darling, it's simply not the kind of game most of us would like to play, and no amount of Mr Wizard shoving it down our throats will change that
Jesus, just add all both Melee and Skullgirls to the lineup.
Make it happen EVO.
Yes Melee!!!!!
You guys think Marvel vs Capcom is fast paced, just wait until you see a match between Mango and Javi!!!
@42
Please enlighten me, why does Skullgirls NEED the spotlight so much more?
They're both fighting games, why is Skullgirls more deserving than melee?
@ #42
Skullgirls doesn't need the spotlight, they need a better development team. I have XBox and STILL can't play the game b/c they overdid the update. Seriously guys, I'll take a fixed, old, fun to watch game over the halfway patched, new, 8 character game anyway.
kinda bummed about the outcome. but hey look on the bright side. all that money for breast cancer research. this great to see the FGC donating to see their game but also to a great cause.
Although is great smash won...the conspiracy part of my brain keeps insisting Nitendo or Bandi had a helping hand in this victory. Those tens of thousands of dollars Kept comming out of NOWHERE and one can't deny that it would be a excellect marking ploy to showcase the new smash right after an E3 showing. No pressure Harada-san...
Regardless, both Smash and Skull deserve a spot after this charity event, and Skullgirls should at the very least get to show their top 4 on the big screen.
Congrats to the Melee community for clutching out that last spot, they deserved it. Also, the fact that it was MELEE and not Brawl really shows how much the community loves their game. Brawl might've been able to get more mainstream support, but they really went for the gold and got the better, if less popular, game into Evo.
I'm not surprised that so many people here are upset about Smash winning though, as a lot of the online fighting game community seems to hate the game for arbitrary reasons. But people, let's not forget that it's all going to a good cause.
Also, it might come off as a surprise to you that a lot of top players in other games started off in, or played Smash competitively in the past. Justin Wong entered a tournament back when it was in MLG and he didn't do too well, although he gave the game his blessings on Cross Counter Live a few days ago and admitted that Melee was a really fun game to watch. Chris G and Mame Spider of Marvel fame also started off in Smash.
Are they doing 1v1, no items on FD? I hope so.
A lot of fans put down Smash for the community modifying the rules of their game. Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? We all modify the rules. If Marvel was supposed to be best out of three the game would have three rounds. Instead, we chose that format. What a developer intends is secondary to how the tool is used.
p.s. This whole thing is so JapanvKorea. EVO is Japan and hates Korea, aka Smash, because they tried to invade them (i.e. enforce non-standard rules) despite protests and when it didn't work Japan (EVO) got mad and makes fun of them ever since despite the fact that they were the ones that started the fight in the first place.
We always want more players but we have a full community on the side wanting to play and we don't let them. Sad.
Where were all the people saying Skullgirls should win when it had 30 entrants at SCR? You complain about it not getting time when LevelUp's been breaking their backs to promote it for YEARS despite harsh criticism and lack of entrants. Mike Z did everything he could to make his game succeed, but at the end of the day, it's up to the community to sustain it, and none of the people complaining did a damn thing about it.
just glad i don't have to watch skullgirls, would have been a flop
@56 I'm only able to participate in Online tournaments. Donating is all i can do otherwise.
@58: Save your money, go out to majors, and support with your presence. What good is it having a game with 50 entrants at the biggest FG tournament in the world? Hate it or love it; the Melee community actually stands up for what they believe in and puts bodies in venues.
@ #55
I'm sorry but that's just an absolute joke of an argument.
Smash basically needs to NEUTER the originally-intended gameplay. Making something best 3 out of 5 is completely different. I'm almost in disbelief over somebody even putting those two things on the same level.
The closest you'll get to that is HDR banning Akuma, and even that is just one character vs turning off all items, only having one (or a few) stage(s) etc.
Honestly ST was the only one I might have even watched. Couldn't care less about SG or Smash. Probably wouldn't have watched ST anyways so really the results are whatever.
I'm not gonna pointlessly hate on Smash for winning out on something that doesn't affect me. Props to smash community for coming out big.
@60
I guess I just feel that a fighting games success depends on pleasing the core audience AND the casual buyer. And Smash delivered on both fronts. It gave buyers what they wanted from a fighting game at the time: All their favorite characters, playing with more than one friend at a time, simplified controls and an element of randomness like the best board games.
But the trick was ... You could turn it off. And for all the arguments that start with "the develop didn't intend" they actually did. There was no telling how players were going to enjoy this new play experience and so they let you completely customize it to suit the situation and the intent. Hardcore modified it just like Halo players did with MLG. But the casuals still play with extra lives and power weapons just like casuals do with Rocket ball and Swat (I love SWAT, actually kinda legit on its own).
Point is - If a developer gives you the tools to customize your experience, that is the "intent".
Thanks for the intelligent response. Nice to not get a flame war going on something I feel is an actual controversy in the FGC, that being: Community vs Creator. To what extent does each play in the outcome of a game's design and competitiveness.

Good to see Melee has won... although I do prefer Brawl due to the fact that I'm playing Ike and Wolf.
I might check EVO a bit more this time, because the only competition that was entertaining to watch was Tatsunoko vs Capcom:
- Most of the roster was picked throughout the tournament
- The matches were even and not one-sided
- It was refreshing to see compared to those downright crappy MvC2 matches
This year, I'm checking P4A and Melee. The rest doesn't really interest me, although KoF 13 might be fun to see.
I'm glad Melee won. That was one of the first fighting games I ever played growing up, and I'm so happy that enough Smashers got it at EVO.
And maybe all the people who say that it takes "no skill" will see it and realize how hard it truly is.
Good stuff to melee but people gotta give skullgirls cred I mean the game is not even a year old and its VERY small compared to melee heck I don't think they even had over 100 people at any major I will be at EVO so it will be a good time to check out some melee or it could be the time to go get food lol
In addition to Chris G and Mame Spider, there have been a lot more Marvel players coming in from the Smash community. Noel Brown admitted in one of the very early episodes of Cross Counter Live that he was part of the Smash community before Marvel. MH|Alukard is still active in both Smash and Marvel. A bunch of other players such as hAZ|Forward, LordKnight, and Falcomist were from Smash, too.
High level melee takes no skill? lol really guys read up on smash wiki and check out the amount of knowledge you need to absorb to keep up with top melee players.
There was a video which showed Fox do a combo that K.O. the other player really quickly...when the combo was broken down...it was amazing! So many inputs were done in a short amount of time to produce that combo and I will tell you now no average person could pull that off.
I wish I could find that video again...if any melee players know of this video post it on here please :)
@Urbanlime iirc Even Bum was a Smash player prior to Marvel 3.
But yea im real happy that Melee gets the spot for EVO, GG's to both Mike Z and the Skullgirls community as well as Team spooky for supporting ST aswell, everyone put up a good fight and it was for a good cause. Though im curious as to how the majority of people who were Supporting Skullgirls never showed up to support it at events, not trying to bring SG down or anything, im just wondering where all these people were when the game desperately needed support in the past. Maybe the fact that VA's like Erin Fitzgerald, Wendee lee, Cristina Vee, Yuri Lowenthal, Kyle herbert etc supporting it had something to do with the sudden spike in supporters?
@72 Here's the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXgpGB...
@kurow yea um im pretty sure that was more than 2-3 hits. You cant really compare Marvel to Melee because they are two COMPLETELY different types of fighters. Thats like trying to Compare Blazblue to Jump Ultimate Stars..
I don't want to see this stupid children's game at EVO. Lame.
On another note, the majority of people bashing Melee in these comments have no idea what they are even talking about. Believe it or not Melee is an extremely technical fighter, i know this because i have a friend who plays both competitive melee and Brawl. The game requires an insane amount of execution to even be considered decent at it. Stuff like wavedashing, chain grabbing, L cancels, short hops, WaveShining with Fox etc takes a pretty good amount of skill to practice and master. Maybe should all actually LEARN to play the game properly before mindlessly trashing it.
That's a lot of money. I'm glad it's going to a good cause.
Congrats to Melee! This just goes to show what a dedicated following it has. While I'm happy for Melee, it's upsetting to see Skullgirls lose despite their hard efforts. I hope the EVO team recognizes these efforts in some way.
people that bash melee are just losers that only have the fighting game community to make themselves look cool.
Over $220,000 is seriously impressive. I'm really proud of the FGC right now, and I REALLY hope this becomes a regular thing for EVO!
It's a perfect opportunity to get each game's community actively involved in getting their favorite games to EVO. Not to mention all of the money goes to a great cause.
Watching Melee is really not my thing at all but congratulations are in order to that community for making such a big push regardless. Good job folks.
Now do try to have some thicker skin and not get so quickly upset when someone says your game takes no skill, yeah? Put the hurt feelings aside and enjoy the fact that your game is gonna be at EVO.
All these comments I see, everyone of these need to GROW UP!
Almost everyone of these people going like "waa Smash Bros. waa I wish my fighter game win waa" This is childish & stupid, this FGC is no better than the sports fans except sports fans cause destruction to the city and create riots.
Look the reason Smash Bros. won is because more people supported Smash Bros. because they LOVE SMASH BROS.
Love & Passion is the true meaing the FGC, but stuff like "I want a serious fighter game like SF, Marvel, Skullgirls etc." is honestly the wrong way of the FGC. Because of that is arrogant, narrowminded, selfish, and its nothing but Gaming Nazi.
Heck the reason that the fighter games that almost everyone of you are even supporting that don't get as much scene is because other gamers finds these too hard, and not interesting. (even if SF has simple special moves, other gamers will find them hard).
This FGC needs to lay off, Smash Bros. series is still a fighter game because of the gameplay concept. Calling it a party game is not really the right name. When you think party game its Mario Party, Raving Rabbits, Sonic Shuffle, Itadaki Streets (Fortune Street) etc. their gameplay concept takes place with board games & mini games.
Smash Bros. in general has the fighter game concept which involves arenas where the only way to win is fight each other, and knock them out of the stage. Smash Bros. has something special that seprate other fighter games is the platform stages very similar to Super Mario Bros., Sonic The Hedgehog, Kirby, Metroid (older ones) etc. even stage environments adds new element to the gameplay. If other tournaments are not accepting the platform & stage enviroments then we got a serious problem here, because that is ruining the concept of the game.
I belive that the FGC of today, is completely wrong. Because these people take other games too seriously, and treat other games like garbage which is unacceptable. The FGC needs to treat all fighter games with equal rights, and start welcome more fighters. Plus we need to have love and passion with our fighter games no matter which title, because this what were really missing with the FGC.
Plus these people need better education, and know the real meaning of life in general.
Ugh...at least Smash's community was so desperate for a spotlight and to prove the game should be taken seriously (even though you have to strip it down to the bones for that to happen) that breast cancer research got a lot of support. Good thing the rest of the EVO line-up was already plenty for me.
@76 Being good at Smash isn't about rehearsing long combos and infinites that run the clock down. Ring outs are how you win the game, so it's simply about using your character and the stage to their greatest effectiveness.
Since the characters in Smash aren't tied to a health bar, those videos showed how just a few skillfully implemented hits can make a huge difference in the outcome of a match. I think that's what sets Smash apart from a lot of other fighting games. You get to watch the old sensei win a few fights by just tapping the opponent's pressure points.
@60 - mrdrofficer - 100% agreed.
Seriously, it's a hard choice between the three, I'dve liked to see all three (SG, Melee, ST) make it for any number of reasons. So I'll definitely be enjoying Melee on stream at EVO.
If I can make it to EVO this year (bunch of things have to go right financially), I'll probably sign up for Melee my damn self so I can get embarrassed lol (though make no mistake, I'd be there for SFxT mostly, and may enter TTT2 if I get enough practice time in).
Most of the melee hate is coming from bunch of people who nothing know about the game, but continuously repeat what the rest of the FGC says. Those people are the same followers that play games like SFxT because it's an accepted FG even though it's an ugly game, with garbage music, and decent gameplay. I don't play melee competitively, but I know a few people who do and the game is deep, traditional fighter or not, it's deep. Don't be mad they did their thing and came up with more money than everyone else. It's all for a great cause, so everyobe should be glad they made such an effort. Oh but you can get knocked off stage so it's not a true fighter, umm aren't ring outs the same concept? Melee is also way less random that respected games like marvel, and that's a fact.
I wanted ST to win, last year's tournament of legends was so good. Oh well, congrats to the Melee community.
Despite all these stupid comments about Smash Bros should not be attending at Evo. It amazes me so much that 2 games were so close to eachother while Street Fighter 2 was not even close to making it. But you have to remember, this is a charity event, without Smash Bros they wouldn't have twice as much as what Skullgirls have. In the end they would have had over a thousand dollars, they got double the amount. I give thanks to everyone who participated in this. Smash Bros, a crossover with my childhood Nintendo favorites Skullgirls, an insperation to alot of fighting games, anime and cartoons. Both are fantastic franchises and i love them both as Fighting games but Smash Bros made it out on top. But hey, there's always next Evo. Maybe if SkullGirls gets the most amount of attention can replace Playstation All Stars at Evo.
Shoutouts to smashers patronizing the FGC with claims of "I swear its alot more technical that it looks! ;("
I will literally die laughing if you loafs split the pot at evo like you do at every other tourny. Your community is toxic and your game is boring to watch.
Deal with it Fighting game nerds.
Although Skullgirls went down fighting. I appreciate it, would have been nice to see it at Evo. But oh well, there is always next year if they can keep with updates and hopefully the PC version makes it grow.
If only people could understand the tech skill involved in melee. The execution goes through the roof, much harder than marvel and kof imo. Not only do you have to change how you combo people based on their damage, but you also have to account for them DI'ing which is them sort of moving in the air while you combo them.
I'm really glad Melee won, as it brings in another big part of fighting games and I think there will be alot more players all around than the other 2 games in both entries and unique players.
