Skullgirls' Japanese publisher, CyberFront, shut down by parent company, Lab Zero and Autumn working on a repsonse

In a recent development, CyberFront, the publisher behind Skullgirls' Japanese version / Encore re-release, has been dissolved by their parent company Kaga Electronics. Kaga acquired ownership over half of CyberFront back in 2010, and aided them in their publishing work.

Unfortunately, CyberFront's financial issues lingered, leading Kaga to claim full ownership of the company. Despite their efforts to reform the subsidiary, Kaga found the administration set up by previous management to be too problematic, and in turn, decided to close up shop.

This news doesn't only come as a surprise to Skullgirls fans, however. Lab Zero Games' own CEO, Peter “Ravidrath” Bartholow, posted a response over on the SkullHeart forum. The Lab Zero representative mentioned that he too was surprised by this development, that he will be contacting CyberFront to confirm, and will begin strategizing with Autumn Games on their next move.

For such a small company wouldnt it make more sense to focus on getting it out in your region first? You put too much food on your plate and you wont finish it all.

Isnt NA usually waiting for launches from japan? *cough bbcp etc cough* i think tey can waut once... Plus id imagine success would be more likely if hey could focus solely on that after.

I don't play this game, but it's very unfortunate all of the dark events surrounding it.I'm aware they do not deserve this,as they have worked more than their asses off to deliver a top notch product.Hope the game flourishes and Lab Zero\Autumn Games are able to reap the benefits and see the light and the end of this abysmal tunnel.Good luck.....

PC version is out and updated.
Console version (America, EU, and Japan) has been out over a year, had the previous update months, and the current update will be out in around a month for everyone (except maybe Japan....).

Does that count?

This game was made with such love and is supported with a passion that 90% of FGC members complain is not seen by major developers of other fighting games, yet it's still so underrepresented at tournaments. I'd really like to see the FGC take up a call to arms when it comes to SG. It's a good game, has good support from the developers, all it needs is the same support from the FGC it was made for.

It's as if the FG ethos itself is trying to reject a really good, new IP.

Fight to the very end, Skullgirls! RALLY!

Indie games, folks!

Seriously, after this bs, it must take some man power and some pride to keep going. They still got 2 dlc chars to finish and implement, and I don't know if they can do it like this.

God really seems to want this game dead huh? Between this and learning last week that the team only makes money from 86'd shirt sales and none of them are making enough to actually live in LA where they work is heartbreaking. Who would have thought that L0's story would be almost as depressing as their characters?

Mike should consider writing a book on this once the whole this is over and done with.

I want to really be sad about this because I love the Skullgirls universe and style. However this game has been a string of slow dissapointments, we all just wanted more characters, more stuff in this game. We got engine tweaks, and patches, but it doesn't make a difference.

This game is going on 2 years and DLC is still in development. The roster is too small for 3v3. All the teams and creativity has been found, there is no room for new players to shine or even care at this point. It has an appeal to casual gamers, but very difficult for many to get good enough to play against even mediocre players.

The waiting, the money we put into kickstarter, and its taking too long. Mike and his team have heart, but it doesn't make them capable.

Companies dry up and change, its only a tragedy because they didn't finish their DLC or their game before their company went under TWO YEARS LATER.

MikeZ used the Skull Heart to make this game.

Therefore, he cursed the game.

Wow, did MikeZ have a zoo full of black panthers cross his path on his way to blow up a warehouse full of mirrors after walking under a ladder used to service the Eiffel Tower or something??

Such is the curse of the Skull Heart.

#52
Snow said on December 20, 2013 at 12:15 p.m.

No they don't. Like I said in my post Mike said in the stream the only thing the L0 team makes money off of is T-Shirt sales. He thought they made money off of the Color DLC at the least, but after checking, he said he was wrong.

#53
Typhoontimmy said on December 20, 2013 at 2:52 p.m.

I have my facts straight, and while DLC is out on steam and betas that doesnt translate to any life in this game. People are still GGPOing Xmen VS Street fighter and other dead games. So PC release doesnt mean enough to call a game living.
If squiggly was released on an N-Gage it means about the same to people on consoles, which is a lot of people, most of them who can't follow this info.
Its too little too late, just make Skullgirls 2 and develope the whole thing at once instead of everyone watching Mike do business by the seat of his pants.

Im not trying to hate on Skullgirls, i love how charming it is... but its boring now and all the fun promises havent been kept up quickly enough to keep interest in it
