Xbox One DRM check interrupts Defend the School's Killer Instinct winners finals match

Xbox One DRM check interrupts Defend the School's Killer Instinct winners finals match Team Spooky After Hours recently uploaded the Killer Instinct winners finals set from Defend the School, and during this bout a peculiar occurrence took place. After a couple of matches played out between RG|Rico Suave and DesDinova91, the players were kicked out of the game, and prompted with the, "Do you own this game or app?" message.

As we know, Microsoft reversed their restrictive DRM policies after a giant uproar of displeased fans, and a daily connection to the internet is no longer required for the system to operate. However, when multiple profiles are active on the Xbox One, playing a game under one that did not originally install the game will cause this message to appear.

What's really unfortunate is that the players weren't even able to save their progress before being booted out of KI. It appears as though the message was a result of the console losing its internet connection, and if that's the case, Xbox One players (not using the original profile that installed the game) could potentially risk losing game progress at the expense of a small internet hiccup or accidental disconnect.

We're not quite sure what this means for Xbox One offline tournament play, but we'll be sure to update you as more information unfolds.

Hit the jump to check out the footage. The disconnect takes place at around 6:35 in the video.

Not a fan of the Xbone, But this doesnt seem like that big of a deal if they were playing the game off different accounts that didnt initially purchase the game.

Im just glad the system no longer requires Kinect to be connected to play games, Seems like that could have been a headache for TO's.

(This comment was hidden because it was down voted. You can view it by clicking here.)

This is exactly how every downloadable game has worked for years on the 360. It is nothing new with the One, and is NOT some new artifact of the DRM reversal. If they are not using it on the machine it was downloaded to, there is a connection check so the original purchaser can use it on another machine.

THIS IS EXACTLY HOW DOWNLOADABLE GAMES HAVE ALWAYS WORKED. IT IS NOTHING NEW.

Get your facts straight before making something out of nothing, EH.

Also, this site is still riddled with screen-filling pop-ups, so keep your ad-block on, folks.

#9
GordonsBeard said on December 18, 2013 at 11:02 a.m.

What happens when you have multiple xbones though? Consoles are nice because (in the past) if you had the game on the machine it didn't care how it got there, it's a machine, not a cop.

Having to worry that your net connection stays on 100% of the time or the entire tournament is canceled is a terrible situation to find yourself in.

#18
EG2 said on December 18, 2013 at 11:09 a.m.

It's the same on the 360 and One. (and I think PS4 now, not sure). On those two any account can use a downloadable game on the licensed machine (the one it's DLed to). For someone to use their downloadable game on another machine, it needs to go online periodically to verify the original purchaser is logged in.

#19
SadisticSamurai said on December 18, 2013 at 11:11 a.m.

@GordonsBeard

Its not about the always on internet connection that isnt even required as far as I know for the console.

Seems like all TO's need to do to avoid this issue is just solely play the game off the account that purchased the game in the first place.

Just waiting for this to happen at evo finals!

#21
EG2 said on December 18, 2013 at 11:17 a.m.

that would not quite solve it. It needs to be played on the system the game was originally downloaded (licensed) to. If using that system, there is no check needed at all for any user. There's only an internet check if a user is trying to use his/her purchased digital game on another system. Same as the 360.

In ps3 do not works like that, you can log in with your psn on a ps3 friends for example, start the download and inmediately you can logoff and resume it on your friends account, it will install perfect, and will play forever, now, what you cannot do is erase the profile of the owner of the game from the ps3, but you dont need to login periodically on the psn account neither the local ps3 profile for the game to work

You know I was going to report on this to EH. I seen Hard8times from YouTube post about this on his usual troll videos but the site he got it from was a biased PlayStation fan boy from the FGC looking for a way to bash Microsoft and didn't sound credible but the incident was real. The question was why it happened.

Downloaded games are licensed via accounts. So if you download a full version of KI from a different account then you must play that game on that logged account. You can play offline without interruption because the game was bought with that registered account.

Now what most likely happen here is that he is playing the game on a different account so this sent a red flag to Xbox One asking if you own the game. The only reason why it would ask is because they are playing on a different account who has not downloaded the game (characters and all).

Thus, what may have happened is the original account holder somehow was logged out and it prompted the machine to do a verification check on the game.

Of course I don't own a xbox One so im not going to pretend to know everything but this is the likely scenario because this is the first instance this has happened and im sure Ki is being played offline everywhere without these interruptions or this would have happened a lot sooner.

bagel_bytez said on December 18, 2013 at 12:09 p.m.

If that's the case then tournys should only run games on hard copies. But it's so much easier to just have the consoles and download the games right? Maybe so, but not if it causes bs problems likes this. Tournament organizers have survived buying (or possibly burning somehow) hard copies up until now, so if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Ps this is in no way my way of saying a support pirating video games.

Can't help but think the to had downloaded the game onto a different console, and was signed in online to play it, while simultaneously ran another console offline with the game on it as well. When the second console lost connection it would no longer allow it to be played. This was also true of xbox360, nothing new. I've played a ton of ki offline (on my only console) and never had this problem.

TrueGamingGuru said on December 18, 2013 at 1:56 p.m.

@XDIEX & breveglieri

What do you guys even know? Do you own the Xbox One? Do you own Killer Instinct? If both of you don't, then you two shouldn't have the right to say if this game is horrible or not if you don't own the console & the game. As a person who owns the Xbox One & Killer Instinct, I can actually say that this isn't really a terrible game at all when you actually play the game.

The game is pretty solid despite the limited launch, the gameplay is like the other Killer Instinct games with a couple of tweaks, enhancements, & updates which makes it more improved & modernized. It actually has a very solid tutorial mode which teaches you the basics to advances which can actually make you a KI player. The character visuals & backgrounds looks very detailed when actually playing the game. (photos & video streams don't count) The character designs (although not everyone's favorites) are definitely a huge improvement from the cheesy 90s, and more developed which can surpass the classics since the designs are still intact on what characters are. The game also has a Killer soundtrack. The customization is definitely not one of the best & has its limits to the point where it isn't a %100 customization, but the items it has definitely make the characters standout (similar to VF customization & Tekken 5-6 customization) with each character having their own items.

I'm not going to convince any of you to go and buy the game & console, but don't go saying stuff like this game & console is terrible if you actually don't own any of these stuff or actually played it. That's common logic

#66
bagel_bytez said on December 18, 2013 at 1:59 p.m.

Well if that's the case then they should've released a full damn game! I hate how dlc means publishers can release bare bones half finished games and say 'we'll get to that soon'. Dlc was a cool idea when you coupd get that 1 special character that was not playable before. Not, 'oh, we'll just give you the other half of our game at another time'. An that goes back to the simplicity aspect of havin a full hard copy of a game instead of this digital nightmare. Any title worth playing should be hard copy day 1

#67
Paramisery said on December 18, 2013 at 2:43 p.m.

I don't disagree with you, but when m$ says "make this a launch game" is it better to release a crappy game with a bunch of characters and features, or a small, unfinished game with solid gameplay? The thing you have to realize is that unlike the n64 era rare, constant delays to truly finish a game are no longer allowed. I think dh made the correct choice and put out a great product. I'm looking forward to how they update the game.

Nothing is normal in regards to the XB1, people love to view MS and the Xbox in this evil light, even if it doesn't make sense. Whether people wanted it or not, the console and games are selling well and many people do like the console.

People just love their corporate loyalties instead of realizing that both are just businesses.

Honestly so far I like what DH has done with KI. The smaller roster in many ways is a throw back to the heyday of games like Super Turbo, where a small roster allowed matchup strategies to develop really well. I like this format honestly. To me this is better than say TTT2 or SF4 where 40-60 combatants make matchup knowledge quite difficult to acquire. I think in some ways it is KI's greatest strength, aside from the incredible netcode.

I find it amazing that the XB1 is actually equal in sales with the PS despite launching in 19 less markets at a one week delayed launch and for $100 dollars more. According to Amazon the X1 was selling at 1000 units per minute until supplies were exhausted during their last shipment. Basically it goes to show that the gaming populace is much larger than many internet trolls think and that people are willing to pay the higher price for access to the XB1's richer feature set. It seems far more people made their decisions based on their own research as opposed to the open media negativity that was being spread previous to launch.

#82
TrueGamingGuru said on December 18, 2013 at 5:21 p.m.

Even if it is naïve & faulty logic, but I feel like this the only way to ever what the game is really like. Sometimes relying on other people & mainstream medias would also be naïve & they may also have very faulty logic as well. How would anyone know if the game is really good or terrible, if the person themselves don't play it. Let me tell ya that relying on trolls, fanboys (including ones that would look for reason to keep bashing Xbox One), biased, & mainstream gamers lead to nowhere. Look at the VGX 2013 which I've heard, that it relies on voting where the gamers choose which game is the best game. That itself leads to naïve, faulty, & bad choices especially since these gamers probably haven't played every game, from every genre, or from this year.

Can't 100% blame ya for choosing to not spend $600 to get an entire game or console. But at the same time, the player themselves have to play the game to know if it really is the best or the worst.

Even if you consider that part as a lazy argument, but heck its at least better than saying this game is "terrible" or it "sucks" without even reason or any useful reason other than a useless one like "this game sucks because its for a terrible console". The hate for KI can also be tiresome and annoying, if they hate the game than why still keep complaining? I'm just saying

#83

I love the new KI, especially Sadira since I usually play female characters, but unfortunately it's on the xbone. As a person who is on a budget and is a PlayStation man at heart, my choice is the ps4. It's been proven to be the better system at a much more affordable price. If KI was on it I'd definitely buy the game, but if it never goes multi plat then the only next gen fighter I'll be playing is ggxrd. Overall I'm a bit disappointed with next gen in general, nothing about either system blows me away, which is why I'm waiting until Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 are released to get my ps4. Those games are system sellers for me, and i can always get ggxrd on my ps3 for the time being.

2101RYU said on December 18, 2013 at 5:53 p.m.

well, yes. i agree with most of that. i stopped paying attention to mainstream videogame media close to ten years ago. i rely on a combination of resources and my own judgment to decide if something is worth my time. seems like it shouldn't be that difficult, but we still have people who care about a videogame's review scores, so i guess there are a lot of hopeless folks out there. i wouldn't bother giving their point of view much credence if i were you.

#86
TrueGamingGuru said on December 18, 2013 at 6:28 p.m.

Yeah, I've also been not agreeing with medias when it comes to what is the worst game or what is the Best game. (depending on what game or what situation) Like I've use to watch X-Play (before the show ended) and I didn't like how they reviewed DOA5 they just came off as just bashing or saying they're trying to be like COD. (when actually there was story background behind the military stuff, if you follow the DOA story & sometimes just because a level is like a shooter that doesn't 100% mean that a middle east is meant for that genre since its based off the events we have of today)

I also rely on resources, judgement, and plus experience to look at it both good perspective & bad perspective. Like I was pretty cautious with the Xbox One, even if there games I've found interesting after what happen at E3 (even though they've improve from previous E3 shows.) the whole controversy of the DRM & having Kinect to activate the system which was a problem in itself & not worth the $599 price tag. But at least they've reversed these policies, and ended up pre order the system. To me that was worth it even if I got 2 games for that system. (even if I have couple of people on PSN that would criticize my decision)

Yeah it shouldn't be that difficult to make decisions for yourself. Here is an interesting thing is that one of the comments in Dreamking's review on Killer Instinct said that reviews are better without the scores or rates, there will always be hopeless people especially when these people could vote for which game is the Best Videogame of the Years.

Even if I shouldn't bother giving my points of view & even if its pointless trying to tell them some facts about certain things. But I still intend to give these people some logic or giving out my points of view when it comes to games, and would want things to not always be about console wars or just blind hate. just saying

NaokiVII said on December 19, 2013 at 3 a.m.

You all do know right, regardless of the big DRM fiasco that went down, when you "accept" the agreements, they can change their DRM crap back to whatever they want, not saying this is the case but they can do it. If this is the future which I somewhat felt like could most likely happen then KI is gonna die. Hopefully things get resolved cause I'd be mad if this happened to me in a tournament.

why should they have stuck to making the game on the 360? so you could PLAY the game yourself?

^This, this and this. It's simple really, I also feel like DLC is causing a lot of slacking half finished products just because they feel they can just add it later.

There was a time when DLC meant add-ons for full completed games not the other half of an incomplete game.

Brings back history; anyone remember MLG Orlando?

"Oh the game froze!"

"Hysteria's Xbox was under a lot of heat AND IT JUST BLEW UP!"
