Sequel for Injustice: Gods Among Us 'definitely a possibility' says NetherRealm's Ed Boon

Posted by Catalyst
December 18, 2013 at 7:59 p.m. PST

It's possible fans of Injustice: Gods Among Us may see a sequel on the horizon, according to NetherRealm Studios' Ed Boon.

When asked about there potentially being another entry in the franchise, Boon said simply, "Yes, there is definitely a possibility."

This is no where near confirmation that a sequel in the works, but it is nice to know that the door is open.

Injustice: Gods Among Us placed in the top 10 in U.S. sales for three months in a row when it was released back in April of this year, and likely ended up with pretty darn good overall numbers for a fighting game.

After the jump, you can see Boon's post, along with statements on Injustice for the Xbox One, and the fact they're always working on a new game.

SPECTRELIGHT said on December 18, 2013 at 8:02 p.m.

There WILL be a #2. With all the money they made for this game, they'd be morons not to make a sequel. I think they'll make a second MK vs DC also.

TheLaw said on December 18, 2013 at 8:05 p.m.

No. Just. No. finish making MK10 if you guys are... then talk about Injustice 2. The 1st one was a horrible experience for me compared to MK9.

NoizyChild said on December 18, 2013 at 8:06 p.m.

NRS, if you're listening, please stop listening to whining scrubs about your games.

There was no reason in the world that Injustice should have been patched more times than how many months it was out.

The more you patch, the more you drive away the hardcore know, the ones that actually keep your games relevant long after the casuals have dropped them.

If you need to, get some top level Marvel or SF players on your testing team. They know how to figure out ways of dealing with potential BS, instead of crying for nerfs and patches all the time.

Also, for the love of God, PLEASE FIX YOUR NETCODE!

Thanks, and congrats on doing well in sales.

Aluppoj said on December 18, 2013 at 8:09 p.m.

It's not a bad thing to make a sequel to a game. I'm in no way criticizing NRS.

With the initial cost of the game, plus the amount of DLC they sold, I thought the original would have a bit more longevity.

Kinda feels like the original is near death. And a sequel is revving up;)!

Label me fanboy all you like, but I love the continued support Street Fighter recieves.

But I love DC characters. And wish NRS success with their sequel.

Aluppoj said on December 18, 2013 at 8:13 p.m.

Good comment. Agree.

Patching a game like Berserk Mode is a death sentence for fighting games. It's really a HUGE turnoff when you're trying to learn tech.

Once a year. Once every few years. That's it! (Unless its some kind of Bug Fix, that's ok.)

ryuhayabusa13 said on December 18, 2013 at 8:13 p.m.

Good. But wishing part 2 has better female faces. And end the bad trend. (I know, I know. Beating on a dead horse already) :/

Injustice is dying because most of the hardcore players left after all the patching, and the casuals left after "their character" didn't get included as DLC.

Not to mention that the netcode is horrible.

the big deal maker is make it with a little less mocap/nrs. a bit less realistic and a bit more comicky?

everything else was great fanservice was 12/10

AugustAPC said on December 18, 2013 at 8:23 p.m.

One thing that I thought Injustice totally flopped on was not expanding passed Earth. The DC Multi/Universe is one of the most colorful and diverse ever created. The fact that there is only one stage off Earth kinda sucks.

I hope we see a much more expansive sequel. Please use Mogo for a stage. An sentient, alien, tropical planet with lantern constructs as interactables would be amazing.

I love Injustice and I can't wait to see more of it. I agree, though, that they should finish MK10 up first.

..also, yes, touch up the female faces, please.

HooliganComboFTW said on December 18, 2013 at 8:30 p.m.

The story ended with a cliffhanger so a sequel to Injustice is very possible just like an MK10. I imagine the game was a financial success as well for a fighting game.

RandomSelectMaster said on December 18, 2013 at 8:35 p.m.

As much as I wanted to like the first one, I did not. I am sad I did not trade it in sooner. Sorry to say that, but I never touched it again after about a month which is sad. I wouldn't mind seeing a DC VS. Capcom instead. Not knocking on NRS as I did like MK9 a lot! I even got the tournament edition of the game at midnight no less. Make MK10 instead, and you got me. For a part 2 of Injustice, I may just wait to see how it turns out instead of getting doing a preorder. And btw, all the DLC characters were too much... and this coming from someone who likes a lot of characters. It just threw the learning curve off balance since a you have to learn the new character match ups all over again. NRS just did not do it correctly in my opinion... a new DLC about a month apart or less is... too much.

PurplePonyJotaro said on December 18, 2013 at 8:48 p.m.

I'm all for it. I honestly think I squeal to this should com before a sequel to Mortl Kombat. That way it will be easier to get WB to help fund it and the more money made from that the more that can be put toward a new Mortal Kombat.

HyperGadoken said on December 18, 2013 at 9:03 p.m.

we've gotten past all the Batman love with the casual Comic book fan. I'd like to see levels based off of other characters like planet Apokolips, Titans tower,a Shazam level, more GL levels like Oa . Maybe make the camera zoomed in a little more, it made the maps feel smaller i think having a zoomed in camera would help like it was in MK. Actually commit to filling that character select screen instead of leaving two spaces when you know we expected more characters. have more than one super and take the meter back to 3 meters, since you don't use three meters for anything in IJ, it's either 1,2,or 4. Fix the netcode and that choppy startup i get when i boot up the game. Keep the interactables as an option and not a requirement. NUMBER ONE REQUIREMENT: Don't copy moves from MK and put them in IJ . Really makes the game feel a bit cheap.

SqueakyBloom said on December 18, 2013 at 9:25 p.m.

I hope in the next game they add characters from the Vertigo imprint as well as giving each character 2 different costumes that look vastly different or have another color.

GenSoHotSpicy said on December 18, 2013 at 9:31 p.m.

You're kidding right? IMO, the game got better with every patch. There were only 7 patches, half of which were mostly hotfixes and version 1.5 lasted for more than 3 months. Please tell me how the patches made the game worse and don't give me the m2dave or REO schtick about Deathstroke and Scorpion nerfs because they were needed. In it's current iteration the game is much more balanced and less braindead and thank God for that.

Guile4Life said on December 18, 2013 at 9:32 p.m.

xShonuffx said on December 18, 2013 at 9:50 p.m.

The patches were a bit annoying I think the only real complaint was Superman overall, maybe Shazam but everyone else wasn't much of a bad thing.

I'm probably just bias but I felt Raven could have used some more changes. I know there are people that think she was balanced to a point where too much would make her broken but I think there were some good quality of life changes that could have made playing her less of a pain and more fun to play also.

I don't know, it just sucked that like she was one of the like two people who didn't receive any real buffs who just so happened to be my main. Add no costume love for most of the cast and I was pretty much done with the game.

And don't get me started with Scorpion lol.

Darklurkr23 said on December 18, 2013 at 9:53 p.m.

Injustice 2? Damn give it some more DLC already.

Anyway, I'm hoping for Mortal Kombat vs Killer Instinct some time down the lane.

SqueakyBloom said on December 18, 2013 at 9:58 p.m.

For the love of god no. Netherrealms isn't going to provide a half finished game as a console exclusive. If Mortal Kombat was to do a crossover with any franchise it has to be a franchise that isn't an console exclusive.

Sage_Liebert said on December 18, 2013 at 10:03 p.m.

Fighting game developers need to realize they have better judgement than the casual noob. They should take advice from the hardcore players.

Also, keep the ugly and stiff animations to the MK series.

SqueakyBloom said on December 18, 2013 at 10:05 p.m.

Basketweiner said on December 18, 2013 at 11:04 p.m.

If they went right to mk vs. dc2 I would be pretty psyched for that. I'm also on board for something team oriented for either injustice 2 or mkvdc2. Either something like kof where characters only have one life bar and when they are defeated their partners come in. Or something like sfxtekken with a meter based tag mechanic. perhaps a 3v3 with a meter based tag mechanic, like marvel. Just nothing stupid like ultimates Rock Paper Scissors TAC game.

TheTHCGamer said on December 18, 2013 at 11:11 p.m.

I agree but why were so many balance changes neede so early on to get to that point? It's an insult to the development team/staff of not doing a good enough job from the beginning. Netcode was bad but what did we expect NRS are getting a reputation for having poor netcodes for there fighting games and saying otherwise before release. I could go on but I'll stop there because injustice was a fun game that was better than I expected however that's not saying much.

dubgrass22 said on December 18, 2013 at 11:24 p.m.

Batmang said on December 19, 2013 at 12:28 a.m.

Wow, what a surprise Kappa. Well, from a casual standpoint, they did a fantastic job imo. Great story, great content, and all sorts of great fan service in general. There only a few problems that I had, like stage variety (or lack thereof), lack of costumes for a few of the characters, and some questionable DLC choices (although that can be overlooked, aside from Scorpion). And yes, Raven and Wonder Woman could use some damn plastic surgery lol. Oh and no Swamp Thing /salt

From a technical standpoint, there were some things that worked and some things that can be improved on. It's obvious that they tried a lot of different things though, so I'm sure it was a good learning experience for NRS. Can't wait for the inevitable sequel.

MarthFE said on December 19, 2013 at 4:22 a.m.

Didn't they have Tom Brady and others playing the game and helping them prerelease?

Regarding the patching issue... I'm not so sure they did it for "whining scrubs". They did the same thing with mk9 and I believe said themselves they wanted to patch it frequently to keep it balanced and up to date but after a lot of complaining about the patches being too often in mk9... They stopped

IareBeStayDrunk said on December 19, 2013 at 4:51 a.m.

The netcode is god awful.

As a cyborg player, it was annoying doing i.a. fireballs just over players heads and winning. Getting ridiculous messages about spam.
and say... if only this was offline each fire ball would be hitting you in the face instead of over your head.

Kawalorn said on December 19, 2013 at 5:20 a.m.

I'd be OK with that. But I'll buy it only if they won't screw up the PC port yet again. Really, ditch High Voltage Studios and give it to someone else/do it yourself.

Freyzii said on December 19, 2013 at 5:52 a.m.

I would buy it. I enjoyed Injustice immensely, especially with friends who are at a similar skill level to yours.

MuMuGuy said on December 19, 2013 at 6:31 a.m.

Hey Boon, try spending at least 5 years working on the online component of the sequel. The netcode in the current iteration of Injustice is pure dog crap even after the 2 years that was used working on the online component AND all the patching that was done after release. While you guys are it it, learn how to hide people's friggin' character choices like most fighting game developers have been doing since 2007!

The real injustice is how bad IGAU is. Apart from the netcode, I love how large the stages are and the laughably slow character walk speed. I can't believe that I gave NRS a second chance after the suck fest that is MK9 online and waste $30 on this game (I got it when it was on sale). At least I learned my lesson and will never buy a NRS game again. At least MK9 is a good game mechanically, if unbalanced as hell, IGAU is just a terrible game all around.

MuMuGuy said on December 19, 2013 at 6:36 a.m.

Hawkgirl's stance is much worse than Batman's. Hawkgirl is holding her mace like it's a bouquet of flowers. Hawkgirl's idle animations have her either petting her mace like it's a small cat or have her acting like some schoolgirl that is trying too hard to be cutesy shy while talking to the boy she has a crush on.

Galletano said on December 19, 2013 at 7:42 a.m.

They'll probably blow that money on apps.

DevilMaySpy said on December 19, 2013 at 7:45 a.m.

They did have Capcom players test the game: Arturo, Nerdjosh, and Chris G. The patches are on Paulo's own accord, not the wishes of the testers. Most of them were dissatisfied with the changes or lack there of, prior to this most recent iteration.

NoizyChild said on December 19, 2013 at 8:44 a.m.

The "stupid" things I say are truthful things that people just get mad about, like when I said Capcom isn't going back to sprites, or how VF isn't a popular game.

Lol, come on. I just got downvoted because I said I have trolls on here. Before that, I got downvoted because I took the time to list every game's chances for EVO.

DangerousBacon said on December 19, 2013 at 8:51 a.m.

My buttox. Kiss it.

Gotomaster said on December 19, 2013 at 9:09 a.m.

You get down voted for also trying to defend Capcom, when they are obviously in the wrong, trying to prove the games you play are objectively better than others, also saying that Virtua Fighters is boring, when what is boring is subjective. Those kinds of stupid things can get you downvoted.

NoizyChild said on December 19, 2013 at 9:14 a.m.

LMAO what?

I don't "defend" Capcom. I'm just not a whining child that expects to have everything for free.

I don't try to prove that the games I play are better than others. The most I'll say is that they're more popular, which is a fact, considering that the games I play are always at tournaments.

And yes, VF is boring. The series has been around since 1994, yet it still has no scene outside of Japan.

Like I said before, when one of the very few US players has to literally bribe people to show up to play it, that's a problem.

You may not like them, but those are the facts.

rongames91 said on December 19, 2013 at 9:29 a.m.

NRS set out to make a brand new game. This is the first entry in what could extend to be its own series.

No series out there got everything right the first time.

I believe NRS should listen to it's fans input to make an even better game the next time around.

theshredder39 said on December 19, 2013 at 9:50 a.m.

Not so soon guys, as much as I love Injustice we don't need another game immediately after the first year of the series.

MuMuGuy said on December 19, 2013 at 9:56 a.m.

While that could be used to defend problems with gameplay mechanics in what could be a new video game IP, there is no excuse for the other flaws with the game.

NRS basically released a beta product, as evidenced by the constant patching that was done with the game so soon after release. IGAU has so much lag that the game is unplayable online and the patches as a whole were replete with some kind of game or character breaking glitch. NRS obviously didn't playtest the game or patches as well as they should've.

Playtesting does not require fan input, just basic commercial common sense. If NRS had playtested the game and patches, online play wouldn't be tantamount to playing underwater and the game wouldn't have so many glitches.

rongames91 said on December 19, 2013 at 10:12 a.m.

The constant patching were all part of character balancing and to fix 2 out of the 30 characters that had bugs. Whether constant balance patching or on a yearly basis is best is another story.

Interestingly enough, both characters were DLC, so we can assume that the DLC characters were not given as much balance as the main roster to weed out the bugs. That could be some of the input they might need or have taken into account already.

Online is definitely something the fans can let the company know about. The online is miles ahead of MK9 but it is still not up to par with the best of them.

It all boils down to if you love the game, and if you do, you should reach out to what needs to be fixed. SF4 was loved even with its infinites. SSF4AE is loved even with its unblockables and proximity block OS. Marvel vs. is loved even with all its glitches and unblockables.

gammabolt17 said on December 19, 2013 at 3:24 p.m.

Why, because of Lego Marvel? That's Marvel just knowin they was gon make some bank of the game. Doesn't mean they're ready to jump into bed with NRS just because they let WB/Travelers Tales make a Lego game. That's nothing more than a good investment. I don't even wanna see Marvel vs. DC in that engine and the game will probably die fast anyway if it's made by them. Let NRS Stay in their lane.

Sasuga said on December 20, 2013 at 2:11 a.m.

You are right about that but they could have done a couple of obviously needed nerfs a lot sooner. Superman stuff for example. Even after EVO it took them too long to 'normalize' him since it was pretty obvious in early stages of the game that his F23 crap was a little too strong in combination with his other strengths.

ednine said on December 20, 2013 at 9:19 a.m.

if youre reading this Mr. Boon, i think we all have opinions on how to make these games better.
I think the design on MK9 was incredible. The stage design and overal feel of the game is incredible. BUt for some reason the levels in injustice do not. so heres a litle list o things i would like to see, just my personal opinion:

MK10 : Better character design ( vs screen, for example) and a little of "bigger character hit animations" , it feels almost exactly the same when you block and when you get hit , Faster Music

INJUSTICE 2: THE same 3 things above Do not make the characters like in mk...make them all diferent, some may have uppercuts, some may not, make everycharacter unique, not just by specials
Better Sound Effects , Bigger Rooster and please no MK guest characters,,its about DC and there are plenty of characters to use ( Firestorm, Swamp thing, DeadMan, etc..)

Just my opinion. :)

Gburton100 said on March 1, 2014 at 10:09 p.m.

Whenever they do make another injustice they should put in static shock, red hood and darkseid. Static shock and red hood was suppose to be dlc in injustice . They should also have better dlc character choices. Jonah hex, Black Manta, The Specter, Robin, Killer Croc and Braniaic would be good dlc character choices.
