Combofiend: Last chance for tournament organizers to grab Shuma-Gorath and Jill for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Posted by Catalyst
December 18, 2013 at 5:57 p.m. PST

Those of you hoping that Capcom would somehow be able to keep Jill and Shuma-Gorath DLC downloads alive for tournaments will be disappointed by the news that once they're off XBL and PSN — they're gone for good.

It remains to be seen how big of an impact this will have on tournaments, as a number of tourney organizers have already purchased these characters, plus it's not an uncommon practice to have people bring their setups from home to help events run a little more smoothly.

Still, if people are converting to Xbox 360s from PlayStation 3s, or vice versa, or attempting to get into the tournament scene for the first time, this could present some problems.

Currently these characters and games are all on sale at heavily reduced prices though, and will be available until December 23, 2013.

To see Combofiend's response, hit the jump.

Does anyone know if you'll be able to redeem the DLC characters included in the vanilla MvC3 Special Edition after they're removed from the marketplace? Because I still have an unopened one.

Using an anime cover on a comic game? Blasphemy! /Kappa

It's a shame that they did DLC characters for this game. Hopefully next time they won't do DLC for crossover games.

i would strongly assume that you cannot if it's completely removed from servers, not just the access itself from the marketplace.

So what happens if your console breaks? Are you just screwed?

#18
TrueGamingGuru said on December 18, 2013 at 7:08 p.m.

@Dmez

Even if the reason that Jill & Shuma should've been in UMVC3 from the start. But Jill & Shuma had to remain as DLC, because of MVC3 Special Edition and also for people who previously bought or redeem the code for Jill & Shuma. Having Jill & Shuma on the disc from start, would've made gamers felt like they've gotten this DLC for nothing. I'm just saying

@Evilhero

You wouldn't be 100% screwed, if you already purchase them they'll still be in your account to download but you need to access your profile. (although would be screw if the PS3 & 360 severs discontinue.)

Then I would say you better download them again NOW!!! Because once its off the grid, you can't get it back, EVER!!!

#23
xShonuffx said on December 18, 2013 at 7:27 p.m.

You can create copies of your DLC on the memory cards for Xbox 360. The data on Jill and Shuma are small since part of them are on the disc anyways. Same with the constumes.

I think you can put the PS3 files on flash drives but not sure. Just store them and if something happens you have a back up copy.

I don't know exactly how but I know you can make back up copies of your files.

#25
Wardog said on December 18, 2013 at 7:46 p.m.

Actually capcom should have put it on the umvc3 disc because that is a updated version like they're going to do with USF4 (Disc version)... the only way people would had gotten mad, if capcom made the dlc time exclusive and made it free for the first version, but since this is a update version... everything from the previous version should be on there and unlock (except for dlc costume, if its not the GOTY edition/main final game).

There's no excuse for Capcom to not put those characters in the updated version Already unlock. I feel sorry for those who are new to the series and saw those two characters and wanna to play with them but can't cause they wasn't on the disc unlock and they didn't know about "the going out sale" ... same with those other games

TrueGamingGuru said on December 18, 2013 at 10:49 p.m.

Actually its not really UMVC3, its more like what Capcom could've done is actually make Jill & Shuma not DLC characters for the original MVC3. Since they were DLC to begin with when MVC3 Fate of Two Worlds Special Edition, and were DLC characters from the start. Even if UMVC3 is an updated version, MVC3 & SFIV are completely different situations.

For starters SFIV (2009) had No DLC Characters, there were plans for it but got cancelled which they later ended up in Super Street Fighter IV. Then later on another update came up which added 4 characters which you didn't need to buy another disc copy in order to access them which are considered as SSFIV DLC and that would be SSFIV Arcade Edition, and then we just got another SSFIV DLC which is Ultra Street Fighter IV which you still don't have to buy another disc copy to access these characters. The disc version of USFIV you mention, is more like the complete content from SFIV, SSFIV, & SSFIVAE containing all the DLC costumes & the 4 characters.

For Marvel vs Capcom 3, because of the Special Edition was bundled with Jill & Shuma and they were DLC characters from the start. It was already bad enough that MVC3 got an update version which gamers really hated that, but having these characters available from the start could've really make gamers felt that they've paid (or got Special Edition) these 2 DLC characters from the original MVC3 for nothing or that they've wasted their money on that. Have you consider that thought process?

I would feel sorry for these people who are new to the series as well, and who would've thought that all digital downloads along with its DLC having to disappear due to licensing expiring. It was bad enough that Capcom couldn't update UMVC3, since everyone had left to work on other projects, the relationship between Marvel & Capcom was very limited, Capcom had to get permission to update the game, and to make matters worst is remove every single DLC plus digital download games that has the name MVC. There may be a possibility that UMVC3 tournaments could banned from video streams, due to copyright which has to do with the Marvel brand.

I would honestly hope this type of situation doesn't effect SFXT, if Capcom & Namco deal comes to an end.

Mr2Good said on December 18, 2013 at 10:52 p.m.

With stuff like this happening, hopefully people start seeing the problems of pure digital content and stop buying it as well.

I don't understand how someone could say that we should 'get them now' though. Isn't this news proof enough that we're just wasting our money then if we do just that? If anything happens to my console or my account they're both gone.

#53
MarthFE said on December 19, 2013 at 4:16 a.m.

People seem to be forgetting that Jill and shuma weren't ready in time for the release of mvc3. Even those who got the special collectors edition had to wait about 3 weeks or so before they could even redeem the codes. I actually have to side with capcom on this one. That and the fact that they wanted DLC characters for the game but after creating a few their desire to build on it and fan demand was too much for a mere patch or dlc, which is why they decided to just make ultimate a cheaper disc based game, they had way too much they wanted to add in. Disagree all you like, true story.

Also, can we stop talking about the picture already? we get it... Move along

#54
JIHADJOE said on December 19, 2013 at 4:31 a.m.

THIS, and that Xbone tourney debacle is why I'm a staunch opponent of DRM. It's all fine and dandy promising us that the servers will always be online, but sooner or later the plug will be pulled and anyone who owns DLC will be SOL.

GoG is the only good digital distribution system.

@55
The people who hacked the game and played them before DLC release will disagree with you. Jill and Shuma were done from day one, but Capcom wanted more $$$.

this is all Disney's fault... some how... pretty sure.

#59
jason24cf said on December 19, 2013 at 6:10 a.m.

It is to a point. Disney owns Marvel and they want all money in house I assume. Just a few weeks or months ago, it was mentioned that Disney purchased all the Marvel movie rights back aside from Spiderman. Sony wouldn't take Disneys offers.

Im sure Disney has something in mind where they want to keep everything under the same publisher or development team which will be in house and they net all the profits.

As for UMvC3 tournaments... I don't see it dying. TO's can still host UMvC3 tournaments, on the other hand I don't think Capcom can. I don't think Capcom can even mention UMvC3 after 12/13/13.

#64
GodotLaserFace said on December 19, 2013 at 8:06 a.m.

So dumb that Capcom didn't include Jill and Shuma in UMVC3 from the beginning. At least make them a free download if you're gonna take out all the DLC away forever. Also, Jill dont cry pls! ;-;

#65
ButterKnife said on December 19, 2013 at 8:28 a.m.

No.

I had a Juggernaut DLC code for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. When the DLC went down, I couldn't redeem it. After a while they got it back up and the codes worked.

Also, I'm pretty sure the MvC3 codes had expiration dates.

What Capcom needs to do is ditch this Disney-infested Marvel junk and make another CvS.

#68
CRAYONSEED said on December 19, 2013 at 9:25 a.m.

My question is if you bought the DLC and switch consoles or swap your hard drive or something, can you re-download the DLC you already paid for in the past.

I'd assume you can, but I haven't tested it...

#69
CRAYONSEED said on December 19, 2013 at 9:27 a.m.

I wouldnt be surprised if there wasn't some kind of licensing reason why they haven't. I assume Marvel gets a cut of the profits from all sales related to MvC and Capcom can't make that call independently.

#70
xShonuffx said on December 19, 2013 at 9:27 a.m.

Maybe its a good thing. They probably felt that with movies like the Avengers not being able to get characters like Wolverine or Fantastic Four might do better if everything is under one umbrella.

This could also be good for future video games and titles where we won't run into the same BS when they were making MvC3. MvC4 might actually be less restrictive.

But that's just speculation but seeing as how Avengers did so well it might be the best thing for Marvel. Too bad Sony was a douche, Avengers 2 needs Spiderman.

#71
Iphantom said on December 19, 2013 at 9:32 a.m.

Just checked PSN on a whim for the costumes and as far as I can tell they're already gone. Oh well at least I had the characters a while ago.

#72
TrueGamingGuru said on December 19, 2013 at 10:12 a.m.

In order for another CvS to ever happen...

1. Capcom would need a license for that, which could be very expensive for Capcom especially the current budget the company has. Can Capcom really afford that? Plus they would need to make a deal with SNK, and they would need the rights similar with the SFXT & TXSF deal where each company can do whatever that company desires without having any other party to interfere.

2. Would SNK be ok with another crossover project, and SNK would want to make their version as well. But SNK can worry that the Capcom version will make more money than what SNK can make. Meaning that SNK wouldn't want to make less from their version, and not have Capcom overshadow them which can prevent an ideal crossover to happen again.

3. Does anyone from the SF team or Capcom have any solid concepts or ideas for a CVS3, its pretty important in order for a game to happen. Look at Ono-san & Harada-san, they were sharing ideas on what they could do for a Street Fighter & Tekken crossover. Plus most of the members from either Capcom or SNK needs to ask the CEO if can make another project, which the CEO have the right to approve or disapprove.

Who knows, and heck who knows what SNK will be working on next. Its not like we know more on what they'll do next since KOFXIII finished the Ash saga. But the chances of seeing a Capcom & SNK crossover is still unknown to this point on.
