'Elena's medium kick uppercut has little invincibility, and trades often; her slide is really good' - Gamerbee's impressions of Elena in USF4

AverMedia's own Gamerbee recently had the chance to try out Ultra Street Fighter 4 at the Taiwan location test, and has taken quite a liking to Elena. Putting in time as the new addition to the SF4 roster, the highly skilled Adon player shared some notes on his findings.

Included here are his impressions, some sample combos, and more. Gamerbee posted these notes in English, and we tidied up some of the phrasing just a bit to make things read smoother.

If you want to get the lowdown on Elena from one of the best players on the tournament scene today, hit the jump.

Gamerbee's Elena notes

• Elena has very good walk back speed, allowing you to play tricky footsies.

• Only 623+MK (dragon punch motion) has a little invincibility, but still not good enough to anti-air (trades a lot). If you trade with someone when anti-airing, you can juggle into Ultra 1.

• All versions of 421+K (reverse dragon punch motion) are punishable. Even though switch LK or HK version make it hard for people to punish you, watch out when you use it.

• Anti-air normal 5+MP (D+MP) is safer but does low damage because it only hits once. 2HP (D+HP) deals higher damage, but loses to other attacks sometimes.

• Her 63214+K (half circle backward motion) hits overhead, and is godlike. You can't block it on reaction, and should be +3 after, so you can link 623+HK (dragon punch) or 2+LK (down + light kick).

• EX 623+K (dragon punch) has really high damage (210, 4hits). 2HP→EX623K (down + HP, EX DP) deals 310 damage. If you want to combo into Ultra, try 2HP→EX421K→UC1 (down + HP, EX reverse DP motion, Ultra 1).

• 3+HK (down-forward + heavy kick) slide is really good. Has far range and a fast start up. Can’t be punished if blocked from far enough, (which is not hard).

• The only useful Link I found is 2LK→2LK→5LK (cr. LK, cr. LK, st. LK). You can hit confirm into 623+K (dragon punch).

• 623+MK (MK dragon punch) has higher damage than 623+HK (HK dragon punch), so use MK version when you want to combo.

• Couldn't found any good point to use 41236+K (half circle forward + kick) so far. Too slow and hard to get full hit, EX version can go through fireballs, but only hits once (low damage).

• You can cancel her Ultra 2 (Healing), at the last min to reduce much of her recovery, and still heal a lot. But if you let her finish the whole move, there will be a long recovery.

• Choose color 8 (yellow), Elena will wear a LEOPARD BIKINI!!.

Sample combos

2+LK→2+LK→5+LK→623+MK→SA66(1st hit)→5+LK→623+MK
- (cr. LK, cr. LK, st. LK, DP+MK, FADC (1st hit), st. LK, DP+MK).

2+HP→EX623+K
- (cr. HP, EX DP) - high damage, 310.

2+HP→EX+421K→U1
- (cr. HP, EX reverse DP motion, Ultra 1)(must close enough).

What the heck is this 654321 thing? Can anyone explain?

Standard keyboard numpad configuration

1 = down-back
2 = down
3 = down-forward
4 = back
5 = neutral
6 = forward
7 = up-back
8 = up
9 = up-forward

Thank god Elena's slide is great, because her DP sucks.

Why can't Elena ever have a proper dp? Her dp always sucks in every game she's in.

#9
jme said on December 17, 2013 at 9:36 a.m.

It's number notation. Used alot in 3d fighters.

Much like how 2d fighters used the Short forward roundhouse and jab strong fierce, or A B C D.

It's just a language us FGC people created.

All of it can be applied to other FGs, it'll still make sense.

mrkareemruiz said on December 17, 2013 at 9:38 a.m.

No thank you, Elena is better.

"Anti-air normal 5+MP (D+MP)"

Slight little mistake here. I think you mean 2+MP?

#12
mrkareemruiz said on December 17, 2013 at 9:41 a.m.

because Capcom have no common sense, but thank god they were smart this time, she have that slide to make up for it

standing strong hit upwards.

#14
Xykes said on December 17, 2013 at 9:44 a.m.

There's a typo: 5+MP is not D+MP, it's neutral + MP

Ewww...her lynx tails are all punishable now?

In SFxT at least lk version was safe.

And, her lk DP was a legit anti-air.

#15
deteknician said on December 17, 2013 at 10:05 a.m.

Her DP is 3f? Source?

#16
capra said on December 17, 2013 at 10:07 a.m.

seriously can't stand numpad notation, I get how it could be useful for 3d fighters but god is it stupid for 2d fighters. please keep this shlt out of street fighter and take it out of arc sys games.

Is calling it DP easier than the actual name?

I mean everyone should be familiar with Elena now

#19
nebbiez said on December 17, 2013 at 10:28 a.m.

Gamerbee said so. Both her cr. short and DP are 3 frames.

#20
powderedtoastman said on December 17, 2013 at 10:28 a.m.

havent got to try it out, but shouldnt her overhead special be 63214+P not K(like in 3s and sfxt)
Also no mentions of her spin scythe move here 214+k, which currently above input overlaps this move. so i think there is an error.

Also havent seen anyone utilize her target combos assuming she still has them.
Makes me wonder if her S.MK>D.HP will have any juggling properties in this game has the D.HP in the combo launches them off the ground slightly. Her U1 seems pretty fast and might be able to comboing into U1 meterlessly in the corner.

Also about her ex spin scythe which went unmentioned should also have juggling properties. Her 3s combo of C.MP>ex SpinS> MK.Spin/ex rhino horn> ex dp.

And have anyone tried or seen if a anti air ex mallet smash allowing follow ups after?(3s it was possible to chain like 3-4 ex mallet smashes against an airborne opponent in certain situations) Could lead to another single ex bar into U1 situation but for anti airing purposes.

jme said on December 17, 2013 at 10:29 a.m.

It's much easier and simpler to have a universal language for all games.

Not everyone knows the Flames Iori's Dragon Punch is called 100 Shiki: Oniyaki. But since it fuctions and looks like a DP, we'll call it DP.

#22
Kenshiro said on December 17, 2013 at 10:33 a.m.

Well that's fine if it refers to the motions but the reverse of that motion is hardly ever an anti-air move.

"• Choose color 8 (yellow), Elena will wear a LEOPARD BIKINI!!."

Most important bit of info about the character. Well done Gamerbee.

People don't reverse DP motion special moves DPs. They just call the input that.

Exactly. I remember when I played a bunch of BlazBlue, every now and then I'd look at Mu's character forum on dustloop to see if there were any important combos I was forgetting to implement, and I'd see stuff like 'tsunugui' and 'furu no tsurugi' and I'd have to look it all up because I play BB in English and she never says any of those things. :(

what does DP mean?

#34
EXBingo said on December 17, 2013 at 1:18 p.m.

210 damage for a 3F Shoryuken is okay since there's almost no invincibility. It should be very good for punishing moves that are -3 with perfect consistency.

#35
Gurpwnder said on December 17, 2013 at 1:29 p.m.

Less invincibility isn't a problem when you get Shoryu trade to Ultra.

#36
chowdizzle said on December 17, 2013 at 2:07 p.m.

"Dragon Punch" which = "Shoryuken"

Generally refers more to the input than the move though.

#37
old_school_rival said on December 17, 2013 at 2:38 p.m.

With all the other useful tools she has, it would be rediculous if she had a strong DP move as well.

kenja0 said on December 17, 2013 at 5:29 p.m.

What's your reason for hating it?

Numpad notation is by far the easiest thing to read, write AND speak versus all other notation.

In many high mobility fighting games (3D and 2D) it makes sense of all directions, including ones like [up forward, neutral, forward / (uf, n, f) / 756] which is the input for instant air dashes. If I'm trying to explain a combo to someone, why would I add extra syllables? It takes time to adapt, but if everyone adopts it, it's easier.

Everytime I read a combo from SF, I see extra characters, periods, and terminology to get the point across. If Street Fighter had long combos, I would see paragraphs compared to a simple one or two lines of text.

Take for example the following: (converting Punches to ABC and Kicks to DEF). What do you think will be easier to read, write, and speak?
Stand Short, Crouch Jab, Crouch Forward, Quarter Circle Forward Kick
st.LK>cr.LP>cr.MK>qcf+K
-OR-
5D>2A>2E>236K.

No need for periods. You throw in numbers to separate the words more distinctly (crouch forward can be confusing; what if a character had crouch forward forward).
You can convert every fighting game to numpad notation and get your point across cleanly and clearly.

Gurpwnder said on December 17, 2013 at 5:44 p.m.

How would I write a Tekken combo then?

1 is LP
2 is RP
3 is LK
4 is RK

#43
Azureneedle said on December 17, 2013 at 6:44 p.m.

Leopard Bikini confirmed.
God bless your soul Gamerbee.

#44
General_Awesomo said on December 17, 2013 at 7:54 p.m.

For Tekken combo annotations, you would use f, b, d, u, n, u/f, d/b, (forward, back, down, up, neutral, up forward, down back) etc. Tekken is, to my knowledge, the only fighter out there that uses numbers for the buttons for annotations.

EWGF is f,n,d,d/f+2. Lee's 10 frame punisher is 1,2,4. Xiaoyu's is 1, d+2.

It's up to personal preference. You can use either acronyms (QCF) or numerical (236).

#45
Gurpwnder said on December 17, 2013 at 8:59 p.m.

How would I write a combo then? For example with Forest Law:

CH B+1,2,1 F+4,U+3, FF4,3, 4,3,4

Is that how I would separate the strings from each other? Or is there no need for commas inside the strings?

#47
metaf4 said on December 18, 2013 at 1:35 a.m.

By the way I know who the 5th character is in Ultra SF4....its Asura.

They pretty much already gave us a full demo of the character since the game Asura's Rath. Here's the proof: http://youtu.be/Q3jlJbM6K5I

Characters moves, combos, supers...even character intros and opening VS profile.

#48
Gameplan said on December 18, 2013 at 2:26 a.m.

Have you been living under a rock? Asura was deconfirmed months ago by Capcom and just this past saturday at Capcom Cup Ono said that the 5th character is a *female*.

#49
A_M_Arc said on December 18, 2013 at 2:33 a.m.

Didnt ono say the 5th was female?

Ninjanuity said on December 18, 2013 at 4:58 a.m.

Numpad notation is basically understood by everyone. Even if someone speaks a different language, they'll still understand what the input is, making it much simpler to exchange combos and info between Japan and other countries. "Quarter-circle forward" or "QCF" will only be understood by those who know English, whereas everyone will understand what 236 is. Quit bitching and learn the notation.

General_Awesomo said on December 18, 2013 at 11:18 a.m.

Yes, strings don't have spaces between commas. Spaces go between moves or strings.

CH b+1,2,1 f+4,U+3, f,f+4,3, 4,3,4

Also, lowercase letters for motions may be preferrable to differentiate between b (back) and B! (bound.)
Honestly, I'm not a huge expert on this. I just dabbled a little in this back when I played TTT2. I looked this up at Tekken Zaibatsu to make sure.
