You know, you can swap out the Capcom Cup guys with someone else, and it would be still be hype

Sako - Daigo

Tokido - Infiltration

Xian - Gamerbee

ChrisG - Justin

Alioune - Ryan Hart

Fuudo - Mago

Haitani - Momochi

Gackt - Bonchan

The Japanese players are more prepared for sure. How the heck are the non Japanese players going to find Gen's, Makoto's, E.Ryu's, Ibuki's, and high level Akuma's to practice against? You can only do so much in training room.

Its going to be hype if a lower tier or underused character takes this though.

So basically a free match for Sako
Gackt vs Tokido looks interesting
Rematch right off the bat for Xian vs Hatani probably gonna be the best match of the opening round)
and Free match for Fuudo

ChrisG vs Sako sounds really interesting. definitely the round one match i gotta watch. Capcom Cup is looking soooo cool, although i'll be waiting for that Daigo surprise appearance at the end.

#28
ltalia90 said on December 12, 2013 at 1:07 p.m.

If you were the guy who uploaded highlight videos of the latest Topanga league, tyvm, they were appreciated.

Seems to be a lot of people, including Ultradavid, going for Chris over Sako. Interesting.

Hopefully Sako pulls this out, he and his wife seem like the nicest people and it'd be cool to see him win a US tournament with international killers.

#29

#32
Orichalkos said on December 12, 2013 at 1:32 p.m.

Of course a lot of US people are rooting for Chris hes kinda the only US representative after all.. so obviously people like Ultradavid are going to be biased lol.

I'm hoping for Hypetani, Xian or Sako to win.

#33
Vespesianus said on December 12, 2013 at 1:35 p.m.

Chris G is nice, but I don't see him beating Sako. Fuudo is a beast and basically has a bye in the first round. Tokido vs. Gackt will be interesting, although I still expect Tokido to win. And I have a feeling Haitani will beat Xian, just based on my knowledge of the characters (their skill level is equally supreme imo).

Btw, I just went over to the Capcom site, and they're reeeeeeeeeally running with this whole five gods thing. I get it, I know who the five gods are, now stop mentioning it at every opportunity...

#34
Kelshou said on December 12, 2013 at 1:47 p.m.

It's pretty interesting...all of the japanese players with the exception of Fuudo are in the Topanga B league now. And if Fuudo loses his A-B league replacement match for the next A league he could be in B league as well.

#35
Ojidan_Boy said on December 12, 2013 at 1:52 p.m.

Guys, I thought of a perfect way to reveal the 5th character at Capcom Cup.

After the ae2012 portion of the tournament is over, the winner goes on stage and has to face against an overpowered CPU version of the 5th character. The way it'll work is on the character select screen a question mark will appear over the 5th character, but once the versus screen appears the portrait will appear, and we will all be seeing the new character for the first time. The player will get no prep time, only relying on his own experience and skill. If he wins capcom could give him an extra bonus prize.

What do you guys think?

#36
Gotomaster said on December 12, 2013 at 2:02 p.m.

Or Combofiend could use the character.

#37

#40
bonchon said on December 12, 2013 at 2:29 p.m.

skill-wise Xian and Alioune are probably the weakest out of the 8, they rely heavily on vortex and unblockables so they still can upset the more skilled opponents.

#41
Ryu_Apprentice said on December 12, 2013 at 2:36 p.m.

hahaa, then you dont know Xian. He's not vortex or unblockable heavy.

#42
Weltall said on December 12, 2013 at 2:44 p.m.

Alioune will get ran the hell over.

#43
goldfish said on December 12, 2013 at 2:52 p.m.

Sako over chris, tokido over gackt, xian over haitani (although i'm cheering for haitani), and Fuudo over Alioune (although i'd like alioune to win).

my pick is xian to win it all followed by tokido. tokido's really seemed to pick it up at Evo. I'd like to see haitani win though followed by sako

#44
Gotomaster said on December 12, 2013 at 2:56 p.m.

Xian doesn't use unblockables, because Gen doesn't have any of those, ontop of Gen not being a strong character. Also, how can you call Xian the weakest skill wise, when he has beaten every single one of these guys at one point?

#45
Ojidan_Boy said on December 12, 2013 at 2:58 p.m.

I guess I just assumed Combofiend or a game tester would get steam rolled by any one of these eight players regardless if they used a new character or not. I mentioned the CPU because their is an element of surprise with it. Then again, the CPU on hardest difficulty still has no idea how to block random special moves or ultras. So, a human opponent could be a better option instead of capcom's really dump AI.

#46
Gotomaster said on December 12, 2013 at 3:04 p.m.

Combo may not be playing as much, but he is still quite proficient, and if he is using a character completely unfamiliar, he can give the winner a decent competition.

#47
NYCraziSalvi516 said on December 12, 2013 at 3:06 p.m.

Don't even go there. Xian doesn't do many unblockables, but his wins come from whether his opponents block his set ups or not. His main footsies tools are low strong>hands and sweep which both can lead (with meter in hte case low strong>hands of course) lead into knockdowns>set-up. Now I won't say that all he has but he is pretty vortex heavy only because gen has to be vortex heavy in most of his match ups.

#48
Atax1s said on December 12, 2013 at 3:07 p.m.

Uh, Gen has a lot of unblockables. There are videos everywhere.

#49
NYCraziSalvi516 said on December 12, 2013 at 3:08 p.m.

Gen does have unblockables smart guy. What rock have you been living under?

#50
Gotomaster said on December 12, 2013 at 3:11 p.m.

The unblockables he does have aren't even viable during a real match, besides, Xian doesn't use those.

#51
Mr2Good said on December 12, 2013 at 3:11 p.m.

That's what XBL/PSN is for.

#52
NYCraziSalvi516 said on December 12, 2013 at 3:16 p.m.

LOL Sure guy. You just caught with your pants down. I know Xian doesnt use many unblockables since I stated that in my other comment, but you came in here saying Gen DIDN'T have unblockables. Don't spread misinformation.

#53
Ryu_Apprentice said on December 12, 2013 at 3:18 p.m.

I think you're mistaking mixup with vortex, Gen is a mixup heavy character yes I agree but his vortex is relatively weak.
Vortex is a sequence that results in a knockdown that gives the attacker clear chance to do it again and again. Gen has mixups when he lands a sweep or throw which leads to lk gekiro finish and he has nothing strong to continue with, if you finish early you go for honest frontal mixup if you complete it oga is your only option and the weakest.

I say it again Xian is not vortex heavy.

#54
NYCraziSalvi516 said on December 12, 2013 at 3:29 p.m.

Let's just agree to disagree. I'm going to get flamed arguing with you lol. :)

#55
BushidoV1 said on December 12, 2013 at 3:31 p.m.

ChrisG vs Sako is free for the latter. If Chris had no idea what to do agains OnlineTony's Seth, Sako's Ibuki is going to be murder.

#56
Ryu_Apprentice said on December 12, 2013 at 3:31 p.m.

nah you wont, not by me. at least.

#57
Gotomaster said on December 12, 2013 at 3:56 p.m.

Well excuse me for forgetting he has them, just shows you how unviable and uncommon they are. Xian doesn't even use them, you might as well say Gen, or atleast Xian's Gen doesn't have them.

#58
Atax1s said on December 12, 2013 at 3:59 p.m.

Alioune is going to get crushed. Tokido will win if he doesn't have to play Xian.

#59
Atax1s said on December 12, 2013 at 4:01 p.m.

They're not that uncommon dude

#60
boulderabuser said on December 12, 2013 at 4:01 p.m.

Don't underestimate Alioune. Although Fuudo seems to have a better chance of winning, he does have some trouble playing against Cammys.

#61
Gotomaster said on December 12, 2013 at 4:08 p.m.

Ok, tell me which Major did a Gen use an unblockable setup? Not the lsab, a tournament.

#62
Ryu_Apprentice said on December 12, 2013 at 4:20 p.m.

Ehmm bro please let it go. you have been riding the benefit of doubt horse for too long. but off my head:

SEA Major Xian vs Daigo, setup in the corner crMP hands super sweep, hard oga to opposite wall. standing unblockable on Ryu

Xian vs Tokido, HP x Hard Gekiro, wiff med oga, medium oga to opposite wall. unblockable on Akuma

Evo 2013: Xian vs Sako, Backthrow, Medium oga, unblockable on Ibuki

Lets just leave it at Xian doesn't rely on them a whole lot ok

I didn't know the list for AE Cap Cup. Chris G made it over Justin and PR Rog? That's crazy. I'd say top 3 AE players in USA are those 3 with Chris being 3rd and the other 2 interchangeable.

Damn it to hell...why did they have to put Haitani against Xian in the first round. Xian's beaten him before, during Thaiger Uppercut...I don't want Haitani eliminated in the first round... BibleThump

#73
BladeStunner said on December 12, 2013 at 11:23 p.m.

Alioune might win his first match. But playing against Fuudo is always an up-hill battle. But if he get's his punishes right (like for example punishing second rekka with 3-frame st. lp into cr.mk into spiral arrow), he might get this one. His Cammy is really scary!
Chris G has definitely a chance to win this easily against Sako. Only 1 knock-down into set-up and Sako goes down. And a knock-down is not an impossible task. I'm gonna go out and say Chris G will win against Sako 2-0 and in convincing fashion. On the other hand, Chris G has no chance winning the whole thing ^^ There is no way.

Rooting for Haitani, Sako and Xian. Flashiest players around! Loving it!

#74
BladeStunner said on December 12, 2013 at 11:26 p.m.

Oh that's right. Tokido mentioned in his interview with Eventhubs that he had been training as of late to beat you, Xian. Apparently he badly wants his revenge on EVO grand finals. Any idea what he's up to? ^^

Xian vs Haitani is going to be the best.

Also RIP ChrisG and Alioune haha

#84
ltalia90 said on December 13, 2013 at 10:20 a.m.

If SBO/ Topanga Sako shows up from the start, it's going to be a huge ask for the USA's only hope. Then again AE is last, so Chris, if he wins Marvel, will be on a massive high going into it.

Xian/ Haitani is a coin toss.

Gackt bodybagged Infiltration Akuma in the qualifier, something like 7-1. Tokido is a different animal but I stil see Gackt pulling through, as much as I love Tokido.

Fuudo whooped Alioune at the 25th anniversary tournament last year, expecting the same tomorrow unless Alioune can make good use of his OS tech.

#85
Gotomaster said on December 13, 2013 at 11:11 a.m.

Sako just needs a knockdown of his own, and its byebye Chris. Sako plays Uryo on a regular basis, Chris has little experience against an Ibuki, let alone one on Sako's level. It will be a battle of the knockdown, but DSako has the better chances of winning, due to his greater knowledge of Sakura over ChrisG knowledge of Ibuki. Sako is also the type of player who can body just about anyone if he feels comfortable, Daigo, Tokido, he will body anyone. If he comes in nervous it will be an even matchup, but if he comes into this tournament the way he would in a Japanese tournament, its over for Chris. And its best of 5, so 2-0 wouldn't be a final result.

#86
kaeshi said on December 13, 2013 at 11:15 a.m.
