The Lost Art of Street Fighter 2 - rarely-seen, hi-res retro artwork

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • August 30, 2013 at 8 p.m. PDT
In celebration of the Street Fighter 2 games recently being released on Wii U, Capcom Unity decided to dig through their archives, in search of some classic SF2 artwork. What they uncovered is a set of high resolution, raw images (without logos or stickers on them), featuring some amazing Street Fighter 2 artwork.

Many of these images have been seen before, however, there are a few that may be brand new to you. Below are some of our favorites, but there are much more over in Capcom Unity's gallery, and you can hit the jump to continue on.

Note: These pieces of artwork are incredibly hi-res, so they may take a second to load fully.

Take a trip down memory lane with this retro Street Fighter 2 art, and let us know which you liked most in the comments below.

Wow, I never knew about the Dhalsim on the tiny little cartdriges of SFII Turbo. That crazy western style artwork was hilarious.

Also, I always thought that Blanka was trying to rape Chun-li in that alley. It didn't occur to me until recently, that he was just doing his roll attack. Lol

I remember ALL of them from box art covers, magazines and posters and stuff. I remember that one of Chunners creating an energy ball appeared way before she even had a projectile! I was a little kid! Gosh, I'm so freaking OLD! D;

Oh wow, Im totally going to officemax or kinkos and making posters of the first two boxarts. Too bad they don't have Alpha 2/3 art or Third strike art. I want posters of that stuff so bad!

These are available in the street fighter books, but at this high res, these look great. Most of the art here is by Akiman And Kinu nishimura except for the snes box art ones.

that's kinda the point that you've seen these images before, these are sweet hi-res copies of them without logos or anything, which is awesome.

This artwork is in the Street Fighter 25th anniversary book so it's not really " The Lost Art of Street Fighter 2 - rarely-seen, hi-res retro artwork ".

most of the art posts on hubs are pretty whack, but this is something I'm grateful to see. I own all capcoms SF anniversary books and there's a few here missing from the books thanks for the hook ups!

Awesome images. Can't believe I never noticed Dhalsim on the Turbo box art, if someone had have told me I would have not believed them. I had the Blanka/Chun poster when I was a kid in my room. Wish they released the Champion Edition artwork like this, that was cool too.

DarkLight said on August 31, 2013 at 3:10 a.m.

These aren't 'Rarely Seen' they are box art covers from various versions in various regions. How does that make them rare?

see the 8th image at the end of hyper fighting when you do every round perfect. 3rd image is kinda close to the one you see in champion edition. could be wrong it might be exactly it.

The old art and character design were far superior to the more cartoonish interpretations of the generation. How I miss the 90'and it's sense of quality.

Wow, these bring me back.

I remember I used to have a strategy guide with an art section at the back, a few of these were included.

@ #15 HooliganComboFTW ,

If my memory serves me right, I believe that would be from the SSFII: The New Challengers intro/opening video of the game. I distinctly remember Cammy sticking her tongue out while putting her gloves on. LOL!
