AllisBrawl, Smashboards and Project M attacked by hackers, top Smash Bros. community sites currently offline

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • August 28, 2013 at 5:57 p.m. PDT
AllisBrawl, Smashboards and Project M attacked by hackers, top Smash Bros. community sites currently offline It has been reported by AlphaZealot, owner of Smashboards, that multiple, large Super Smash Bros. community websites have been served with denial of service attacks (disabling a website's server with high traffic). AllisBrawl, SmashBoards and Project M, the site dedicated to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod, have all allegedly been hit and are currently offline.

AllisBrawl was the first to suffer such an attack on August 15th, and has been fighting off subsequent strikes since then. The following day, Smashboards encountered a bit of data loss when they too underwent incursion. Project M was the last to go offline after being hit by similar attacks.

AlphaZealot had this to say on the matter: "All of the owners of these sites (myself, Strongbad/Warchamp, and Neal/JV) are working together to bring things back online and we are sharing information about potential solutions."

Warchamp of Project M ensured Kotaku that there is a solution to this problem, however, it may be too expensive to pursue at the moment. Hit the jump to read Warchamp's statement.

We are personally fortunate enough to have an understanding server host who has cooperated with us during this situation. Unfortunately, the only viable solution to the problem at this moment is expensive and not something we can easily pursue. If this is somehow still ongoing in a week or so, we do have a plan to mitigate these attacks.

It appears as though these unknown assailants have specifically targeted Super Smash Bros. community sites, and have effectively shut them down for the time being. As stated by AlphaZealot and Warchamp, the site owners are currently working on getting everything up and running once again.

Although Project M is decommissioned at this time, you can still download their Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod, here.

Of all the things to attack, why Smash? I'm not a fan of the competitive scene, but I could never find a reason to do something like this. Seem pretty damned pointless.

I mean, it's not like the attacker(s) couldn't make better use of that sort of tactic on sites that promote behavior that directly harms others.

Rumrunner said on August 28, 2013 at 8:25 p.m.

Maybe it's because some got sick of the lunacy infecting the FGC? Sry, Smash isn't a fighter, has it's own community and needs to keep its silliness away from the likes of Tekken and Street Fighter. They do well by themselves. Why keep trying to ruin the FGC by putting Mario's face on it? I don't see other competitive genres trying to leech off the FGC boobs.

Keep your kiddie stuff in the kiddie pen and leave the serious fighters for adults. We don't force our stuff into smash tournaments. Leave us alone.

Don't start none, won't be none!

I'm kidding... but Smash doesn't belong at our events.

#49
rlt4life said on August 28, 2013 at 8:41 p.m.

@48

No disrespect but you can only really speak for yourself. People as a majority decide what games belong at what events. People raised the most for Melee to have a spot at EVO, so it got a spot. Simple as that.

#52
Rumrunner said on August 28, 2013 at 9:01 p.m.

@50 Exactly. PAID to be included. Did NOT make it in on its own merit. It's just a way to add numbers to Evo. People, as a majority didn't decide anything. It was money, pure and simple.
CEO got thanked for excluding Smash. There's your real FGC player consensus with the money removed and Jebailey could have used Smash to increase his numbers but he was obviously more concerned with quality.

Don't fool yourself into thinking that money is somehow the voice of the people. That's like saying that lobbyists are the voice of the American people.

That's exactly the silly type of nonsense I was referring to.

#53
OmegaZero said on August 28, 2013 at 9:24 p.m.

@rumrunner

Seems like dont have your facts together, melee has being on evo before an end up being removed of the tournament lineup simply because the staff didnt know how to run the tournaments (this is a fact, something that you may have known if you look it out first).

Second dont fool yourself, Melee make it to the MLG circuit years before any other fighter was ever recognized as anything but a simple hobby, people got paid to play melee back on its prime days, melee got big pot bonuses before any other fighter, in other words, you just have a childish mentality an cant accept the fact that smash as a whole has a bigger community than most of the other communitys around the world.

Smash is a fighter, an adventure game, a party game, 2d platform, sport game, an even a rpg at some points, the game as a whole isnt a fighter cause smash is many things one of those just happen to be a fighting game, people just need to accept that.

Now back on topic, people need to stop refearing to people as hackers, cause they're not, a hacker by definition, is someone that use his skill in programing to solve issues, not to cause them, a cracker is the real definition for the ones that cause troubles, by either changing lines of codes or building programs to disrupt systems an such.

The pages being down due to high traffic isnt even a cracker, anyone with the ability to use google can do this, its a program that lets you log multiple times on the server.

What it means is that 1 person equal around 100,000 logs, if you do this multiple times in a few seconds or minutes(press F5), then the server get saturated and servers go down, it isnt difficult, like I say, anyone can do it, best way to avoid this, is simply to limit the number of logs per seconds, sure that will cause a few problems an people will not be able to connect to the websites if to much people try to log an the same time, it will certainly cut down the options for the agressors.

rlt4life said on August 28, 2013 at 9:38 p.m.

Out of complete curiosity, what's gained by excluding Smash? Not starting anything, legit question. The way you speak it's as if the Smash community is the most toxic and damaging to the FGC.

@Rumrunner Honestly the people from the FGC themselves are already infecting the FGC itself from its arrogance, narrowminded, childish, sexist behavior and the internet itself infects the FGC even worst.

I'm going to say this Smash IS A FIGHTER, its part of the fighter genre. Fighter games isn't always about games like SF or Tekken, SSB in its own right a fighter because of its game mechanics. SSB is considered a platform fighter, which platform fighter is part of the fighter genre.

Honestly putting Mario's face isn't ruining the FGC, its people like yourself is ruining the FGC because of your arrogance & narrow view of the genre itself. By the way the fighter game events doesn't belong to arrogant FGC people like you, because the host has full control with their own events.

What a real serious fighter is not the ones playing Street Fighter or Tekken, its more like real life people entering real life fighter rings like Boxing, Wrestling, Karate, & Mixed Martial Arts etc.

Part of SSBM getting the spot in EVO, and raising money was for breast cancer which people get to vote on which game gets the EVO spot, and SSBM won fair & square.

The people who thanked Nintendo of America to decide to excluded SSB from tournaments, needs to be ashamed of themselves. Honestly how would people like you feel if Capcom decided to support SOPA or PIPA and making streaming tournaments based on their games illegal, which Capcom decides to shut down SSFIV or UMVC3 tournaments. Heck maybe we should let the government make a law that bans videogame tournaments like EVO gets shut down, that'll make everyone happy.

Sometimes FGC players need to learn to respect & welcome something different, and needs to learn when to behave themselves.

real talk, FGC haters are really clueless.

Here's the truth: FGC needs smash just as much if not more then Smash needs FGC. Why do you ask?

Well, let's see, Smash hasn't even had its "street fighter 4" yet; The game that shoots Smash into ridiculous popularity and Smash is still getting really good numbers for its streams. When Smash 4 comes out those numbers are going to SKY ROCKET.

The smart TOs in the FGC recognize this and are adding smash to their events because of what they and the community can get out of it.

I have an idea of who did it, this persons been going on about this at aib, keeps asking what would u do if u knew who it was and crap like that. The main reason iḿ suspecting this person is bc i saw that same person post on here like 2 days ago that he was going to ddos the sites again at 10 am his name is ¨i_am_myles¨ n surely enough aib was running ok at the time but after it stopped working again.
also last night or 1 am ec ¨i_am_myles¨ said he was going to attack it in 5 mins and again after that the site aib underwent ddos again.
(itś either him or he might know who it is, n that his gamername from aib btw)

i base this of off what ive watched on ¨criminal minds¨ seen a couple ep. where the criminal goes back to the same place to see the publics reaction or watches the news. this guy is acting like one lol
