Arc System Works wants fresh start for Guilty Gear series, aim is to get as many people playing as possible

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • August 17, 2013 at 10:07 a.m. PDT
Arc System Work's team working on Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- wants a fresh start for the series, and in the process, they hope to attract as many people as possible to start enjoying the franchise.

While details on how this would be accomplished weren't revealed; the first Guilty Gear was released back in 1998, and since that time hasn't been known as one of the most forgiving titles in the FGC for its learning curve.

Series creator, Daisuke Ishiwatari, said that his team had this goal from the start of the project, but didn't elaborate on how they're planning to accomplish it. Here are some screen shots from the location test going down, hit the jump to view more. Also, you can find gameplay details there as well.

More Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- details

• The reason Arc System Works went with Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, Millia Rage, Potemkin, Chipp Zanuff, May, and Venom for the location test is they were the first characters to be created, and were furthest along.

• They said there's plenty more characters coming, though, and completely new characters were hinted at.

• They're making the game's Roman Cancel usable at any time during attacks, on top of slowing down movements of everything except your character, but they're still testing this feature.

• Sol will be a character who players can go wild with by using special attacks.

• Ky will get a new ability called "Grinder," in addition to having more powered-up "Stun Edge" attacks.

• May will be a "catchy" character, and more acrobatic than before.

• Chipp will be getting more ninja-like moves, such as having the ability to stick to walls while attacking.

• Millia has always been a speed-based character, so Arc System Works plan on giving her new attacks that further utilizes her speed.

• Button configurations based on BlazBlue and Persona 4: Arena will be included, by default, as shown in the screen shot below.

And on cue, the GG elitists start claiming that the game is gonna die because they'll most likely lower the learning curve.

Try being happy that people want to play GG. You barely have a scene as is.

But then you'll cry if they kept it the exact same way, and nobody shows up to play it at tourneys. Then you'll bitch and blame Capcom for it.

lol @4 actualy thinking that GG will outsell SF or any other capcom fighting game. I even dare to bet that SFxT still have higher sales than the new GG.

Not bad talking GG or any other fighting game it's just that pretty much every other FG that isn't SF won't really sell or stay alive for a long time. I like pretty much all Fighting games it's just too bad that most of them don't stay relevant for too long.

*sigh* every developer is always trying to cater to bad kids by making it as easy mode as possible. They're gonna quit the game in a month anyway no matter how if there's a simple mode or not.

#25
geoomega said on August 17, 2013 at 11:05 a.m.

if arc system works release this game as the first new fighter in the new consoles. it goes without saying that it will attract many gamers that were not even into fighting games...because honestly ULTRA street fighter 4 is on the horizon, but everyone knows is not exactly a new NEW game.

It wasn't posted here but they were interviewed awhile back saying they would have button configure options that would be more BB or P4A style so maybe thats what they meant?

Also, get rid of that Ky ponytail. I'm sure they can come up with some other way to show he has "aged" besides changing his hairstyle.

May = Adorable
Sols' Devil Trigger = SICK!
All it needs to succeed is, a good netcode, online functionality with modes, and a halfway decent tutorials for new comers! Sold and done!
Also pricing, $60 for a fighter scares alot of people off.

Ive never tried this series, i think the problem for me was not perceived learning curve (ive been playing fighters since the very first streetfighter on the commodore 64) but because i was late the party i had no idea where to start. I see indistinguishable baffling titles so ive no idea which was the latest version and trying to check them out on the marketplace on in the times i was tempted all i saw was umpteen update versions and expensive character unlocks... it was all just a bit too off putting for me personally.

There'll always be people who whine. No sense in giving them attention. Let 'em cry, I say. I never played much Guilty Gear back in the day, but I'm interested in this new one. The problem is people would rather have their own little bubble of players, essentially keeping the new players out. Sorry, but that's not a very smart way of establishing a healthy scene.

Some of you guys need to just get over it. I understand people want fighting games to require hard work to get good at, but first and foremost, they're supposed to be fun. I think some people lose sight of this.

This game looks great i'm gonna be new into GG series but so far i have tried +R and i have to say the level of difficulty is ok but it is a bit much even other players agree that sometimes GG is a bit too unnecessarily difficult so don't make it so dumb down but a tad bit wouldn't hurt it would only increase the scene the only other deterrent i have is that the scene is filled with elitist who shove ppl like me out and it makes me wonder why do they want there scene to die so bad no wonder GG is no longer a main stage game

#46
TheTHCGamer said on August 17, 2013 at 12:32 p.m.

@39 You could say that about a few fighting games which includes ASW games. Theres nothing wrong with updates if you don't want them don't pay for them and if there affordable updates that bring new life into your favorite games I don't see the problem.

People are always talking about high learning curves for a particular fighting games when I really feel that's not the case. If you play fighting games in general you understand all fighting games can be enjoyed at all levels of play. You don't need to be an expert at a particular fighting game to enjoy it.

Guess what regardless if you dumb down a fighting game the same top players are still most likely going to dominate. ASW should do the little things to get new players hooked. For one make sure the online netcode is great and just add a solid tutorial mode for new players.

People need to stop labeling certain fighting games as having a high learning curve because it only ends up intimidating new comers. Sure some fighting games offer more depth but it should be explained in a way like if you want to take your skills to the next level there are advanced tactics the game offers.

Paradonyx said on August 17, 2013 at 1:24 p.m.

Oh, and to add to that, screw the English voice acting. Just add English subtitles and you are good to go. I mean really, I'm pretty sure people would rather play sooner than wait for translations. I don't mind voice acting, but if it meant I could play this game sooner than the hell with English VAs.

Tangogamer45 said on August 17, 2013 at 2:55 p.m.

Sheesh, it seems some people are playing by their fears by saying that the GG series will be instantly dead with Xrd on arrival because of the developers trying to make the game more accessible. I don't think a majority of elitists, or fanboys for that matter, understand where the FGC really manifested from: casual, fun play. By saying that new, inexperienced players are killing the FGC, think about how you, or all of us, started out: scrubs who didn't have any idea what we were doing or how to play. Several popular players who I happened to meet at a local event, and are some of the nicest people I've ever met, say they started out like scrubs, but they practiced and practiced until they got good and started kicking butt. They also said they would be happy for new meat to come in to learn about the FGC and the games they play competitively and join the club. And yet, you wannabe elitists look at these top players like they're some sort of god, or hero, whatever. I bet some of them would be ashamed because they have fans like ya'll. And besides, it isn't just Arc System Works that's trying to encourage new players, but also Nether Realm Studios and even Capcom are starting to do this as well, also the very same companies you buy and idolize games from.

Coming from a variety gamer who played his first Guilty Gear game on the PS1 all the way to X2, I am quite jaded and disgusted at how hypocritical the bad side of the FGC can be. Sorry for the report-long comment.

#64
Tangogamer45 said on August 17, 2013 at 3:02 p.m.

I think ASW is going to do an awesome job with this. It's good to see well-known companies like them starting to help out newbies get into fighting games. Hopefully, it'll be fun to play as well. Oh, and for new characters, I think Raven should definitely get a shot and also Sin from Overture.

#65
Spartan_Rambo said on August 17, 2013 at 3:12 p.m.

I really like ASW as developers but they should do thing better, for example, focusing in only one fighting game instead of what they are doing right now, developing an update for P4A (arcades and possibly consoles), Chrono Phantasma (port to consoles and adding characters)a new fighting game that they were creating for the next gen with completely new characters etc, and the new GG, and honestly ASW isn't big enough to do everything at the same time, they should focus on one or two things at the same time.

#66
geoomega said on August 17, 2013 at 3:21 p.m.

I blew up the GG community on a recent podcast episode for being so damn ungrateful and actually complaining about everything from Potemkin's looks to them making the game noob friendly when there was hardly any footage up.

Guilty Gear has a step learning curve at the moment and I feel like even for me, it's a great dessert with too much extra crap on it. FRCs, Slashbacks, Force Breaks, etc. I'm kind of glad they are trimming the fat so to speak. It's not like they are just going to dumb everything down after all the stuff they added over the years. Hell at best we'll get something fresh and new or we'll get a unique hybrid of all things GG alternatively.

tl:dr version: I'm hype. Don't care if you want to pout about it for another 5-6 years for a new Guilty Gear so be it. I'm sold.

Reading these comments makes me chortle a bit. To generalise a little, it seems like:

Players who attended the location test weekend = several impressions of how the game looks, plays, characters, what's new, how nice the graphics are looking and their expectations for the finished arcade release.

Negative commentors on Event Hubs = Cel-shaded take on the game is gay, ASW broadening the audience means the game will be dead on arrival, where's my favourite character (they better be in it or I'm not going to play this game I left several comments on threads about), it isn't (enter feature of the game) like the same feature in (insert favourite fighter of the moment here) and so on.

Seriously, just either appreciate that one developer is going to considerable lengths to create an anime looking game in 3D and be excited about it or go and play the games you enjoy. Nobody likes a whiner in the end.

#81
kirblar said on August 18, 2013 at 2:24 p.m.

Look at the art style- when they talk about trying to get new players, it's not just about gameplay. The old art style was sort of dated. It felt very much of its time. The new art style is very much in the vein of Naruto/FMA, and is something I could see appealing huge to kids, which I couldn't say of the prior style.
