Mortal Kombat 9 PC sales are 'way, way above expectations'

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • August 10, 2013 at 6:35 p.m. PDT
Showing that the PC market has some teeth, NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon said that sales so far for Mortal Kombat 9 on that platform have been, "WAY WAY above expectations." The game has picked up an 82/100 Metascore on Metacritic, which is quite solid for a title that was originally released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in April 2011.

End users have given the game an 8.8/10 score on the same site, with almost 200 gamers weighing in on how they feel about the product.

These results seem to conflict with a statement Namco Bandai's Katsuhiro Harada made, as he felt that PC gamers weren't interested in fighting games.

Harada made that remark in early 2013, but it's possible if enough companies see successful fighting game launches on the PC, they'll change their tune.

smart funding for porting to the PC, means you'll be getting back a LOT over time. it's laughable, to me, that companies can't handle PC releases because it can't fit into their horrifyingly-expensive needs. remember when square enix said 4 million copies sold was not enough to strike a profit?

Now now guys, now is not the time to be trying to rub Harada's face in something.

Instead, let us use it as evidence for GIVE TEKKEN TAG 2 PC PORT PLS

I can't wait for PCs to be considered equal with game consoles for fighting games. But first, let's see how free-to-play models turn out. :D

Hopefully with the sales from this and the expected release of KOF 98UM/02UM and 13 we can see more fighters on PC.

Let us not forget that Ed Boon was wrong too. Perhaps if it was WAY WAY above expectations, they would have released it sooner with hindsight?

Awesome news.

Maybe NRS can use some of that extra money to pay their workers overtime and rebalance MK9. And nerfs only. The buff-only philosophy is great for Street Fighter (in theory), but it does not work for MK.

With all due respect with what Harada has accomplished in the past, he is an idiot on this front regarding PC fighting games. Skullgirls is another one on PC that is currently on Beta where its having great success from the IGG/Pre-orders alone. KoF XIII is another heading to PC soon and if its netcode is decent (Not having too much faith) then this would be very good for PC gamers who are fighter enthusiasts. Arc Sys just gave up on it since the first BB alliteration.

With how easy PC gaming is now for the everyman, the term "PC gamer" needs to be re-examined.

I'm curious to see and compare the numbers for console versus PC. Boon said it was way way above expectations but if his estimate was low to begin with, then of course it's going to be high.

@14
Agree.
i guess Harada doesn't want port to PC cause he can't barely watch his virtual daughters getting raped by mod :\

#17
Chryo said on August 10, 2013 at 7:54 p.m.

I think some people are missing something here, if WB actually went ahead and greenlit the port they were expecting a reasonable profit from it. You don't release a product if you expect to barely break even, that's not how companies work.
Now, if Boon says they did that well then they probably made a pretty decent amount of money. Not "kids at a Gamestop paying 60 bucks for a game on midnight release" kind of money of course, but good enough for a 2 year old game.

@16 That's a tough one, digital distribution sales figures for most stores are not disclosed to the public.

@17 What.

Japan just have a strong case of autism when it comes to PC gaming, every fighting game should be ported. Now if only we could get KoF13 on Steam that'd be swell.

The auto graphics thing that this game has is brilliant. Bad video quality but other than that, very polished.

@Catalyst

Might want to fix this line in the story:

End users have given the game an 8.8/100 score on the same site

You have an extra 0 on there making it look like a horrible score :D

PC Market is not suitable for fighting games that have released superior versions of the game on console first, then only hand scraps to PC.
Like SF4 vanilla getting outdated relatively quickly with the Super release, then that being delayed out to PC, then the patch update after that and AGAIN with AE.

Plus it's just hard to find working arcade sticks for both PC and consoles.

SunaharaRaja said on August 11, 2013 at 2:15 a.m.

to be honest i was going to buy mk9 but i heard rumors about injustice coming to pc as well, since i'm new to the mk world i decided to wait and buy injustice first and see how it goes, i may buy both in the end like i did with sf4 and SxT

#32
MentalFloss said on August 11, 2013 at 2:41 a.m.

@26 As Hey stated, the majority of sticks work on both console and are plug and play on pc. The only issues I've ever run into are the older PS3 TE sticks (round 1 and 2) from madcatz which may require a via chipset usb controller. Even if your motherboard doesn't have this, it can be easily remedied for literally $10-15 with a pci/pci-e card.

Honestly with the advent of the new "wannabee overpriced media-center computers" or as the general public refers to them: "next-gen consoles" I'll be doing the majority of my next-gen fighting gaming on my PC.

#33
FightDirty said on August 11, 2013 at 3:08 a.m.

Not surprised that MK9 is selling well on PC. It is the best MK game by far and unlike Injustice is actually fun to play & is a decent fighting game. I look forward to seeing some cool MK PC mods.

UncannyChito said on August 11, 2013 at 4:07 a.m.

Can anyone confirm for a fact if the Mayflash fight stick is compatible with Steam's fighting games? To be more specific, MK9 and SSF4AE? I would sure love to grind if these pc ports work with my stick and with KOF 13 and Skullgirls just around the corner, I will be grinding for sure.

#35
StriderGlemX5 said on August 11, 2013 at 4:50 a.m.

of course they make more $ from a PC game sell than a console game sell
PC cuts out that middle man that drives up the price that is also a factor/ reason more publishers need to release their games on PC lol to MentalFloss "wannabee overpriced media-center computers" that was funny.

Montsegur said on August 11, 2013 at 5:48 a.m.

Even the makers of the Torchlight series said steam sales were great. When the games drop to 5-10$, thousands of people who would have never purchased it full price, buy it. Sure, the profit margin is smaller, but it's money you would of never seen without a sale.

I know myself have purchased a ton of 2-10$ games I would of never picked up otherwise.

www_zeeshan_de said on August 11, 2013 at 6:01 a.m.

This is great, i also bought have mk9 for pc. Its great (m just missing a windowed mode so i can wait for online matches while watching telly or surfing net). Its ok for the developers to publish their games on STEAM ONLY, they can save a lot of money on this way (no production costs for CD/DVD/BLURAY).
Now bring the following games to PC with ONLINE rankings:
BATTLE ARENA TOSHIDEN 2013
DEAD OR ALIVE 2013
KILLER INSTINCT 2013
BLOODY ROAR 2013
RIVAL SCHOOLS 2013
STAR GLADIATOR 2013
VS 2013
KENSAI 2013
TEKKEN 2013
SOUL BLADE 2013
etc.

You see theres a lot to do. Start development NOW !

Chryo said on August 11, 2013 at 7:09 a.m.

@42 I say this often but what the hell, here it goes again. According to Valve, revenue during Steam sales is multiplied by a factor of 40.

No, not the number of copies sold, the actual profit. It's pretty crazy.

You appear to be confused on multiple counts.

1. The best most accurate version of SF4 is on the PC (in regards to accuracy of frame data, input lag and FPS/graphics overall). It's also what the Japanese arcade machines run.

2. All fightsticks work on PC by default whether they are PS3 or Xbox 360 as they have PC modes. At least this goes for MadCatz, Hori, Qanba and Eightarc among others. You just had to know how to switch it to PC mode by, you know, reading the instructions or Googling (and if it's a 360 stick not even that).

#44
Kuvio said on August 11, 2013 at 7:33 a.m.

Like #41 said, people will buy anything on Steam if the price is right. It is definitely worth developing for PC if not just to generate a larger/more diverse fanbase.

I think that, just to be fair, regardless of his skepticism for how good his games could perform on PC, it should be pointed that Harada is apparently an enthusiast PC gamer himself and an avid Steam user, which are already unusual traits for a Japanese developer.

KemetWarlord17 said on August 13, 2013 at 3:22 a.m.

Despite this, in reality, the PC community as a whole hasn't shown anything near even a mass demand for fighting games. Even Steam, the biggest PC gaming community you'll find, has almost no fighters and caters more heavily to RTS, MMO, shooter and a fistful of cross-platform, big budget games. Every gamer knows PCs are better in all ways tech and option-wise but due to the PC community as a whole craving only a small genre of games, and many getting pirated anyway, you won't see the vast genre options of console hit PC until the community shows that they all really want something new.
