NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon talked about the future of the Mortal Kombat franchise, and informed fans that development on the latest title hasn't even started yet.Sounds good. Just bring back Shinnok, Reiko, and Fujin and I'm straight.
@2
Of what you just said, "going 3D" was the only biggest mistake. I don't see anything wrong with multiple stances and weapon styles. Gen, from Street Fighter, has multiple stances and it works fine.
I could see two stances for each character: unarmed and with weapon. Sure, characters such as Scorpion and Jade would have to be reworked, but having mutliple stances means more strategies, more combos, new fighting styles and possibly new fatalities, some with weapons and some without. Finally, weapons wouldn't be as broken because the game would remain 2D-based. On a sidenote, let's say I'm playing as Kabal, care to give one reason why I wouldn't use his hook swords instead of his punches ?
As for characters, I'm not too sure... because aside from Shinnok, Bo Rai Cho and Fujin, I don't see other characters that would make sense to add. You got to admit that after MK4, the roster became loaded with underdeveloped characters.
For story mode, I'd like to see the following structure:
- 1 route for half of the roster (good guys)
- 1 route for the other half (bad guys)
- Extra chapters for guests and DLC characters (Kratos, Kenshi, Skarlett, Rain, Krueger and any other; I'm aware that they have an arcade mode, but it would be nice for them to get a 4-fight story chapter, in which they actually talk and where players can learn the motivations for each in the current events.)
The Story Mode is a great way to learn the basis for characters, but I was disappointed that only half of them got the playable spotlight. That needs to change.
Finally, NetherRealms needs to push Microsoft for a guest for their home console. Come on, ask Microsoft to have Rareware give them a Killer Instinct character like Fulgore. That would be an equal and just deal, especially if Sony allowed Kratos to be added for their console.
They need to make their models move more naturally.
Maybe make their punches not look like slaps.
@5 they were motion capped, don't know how they will make them "move more naturally"...lol
I'd agree, fighting games must be the hardest to evolve/vary due to mechanics having to be new and innoventive and at the same time balanced etc
Mortal Kombat (2011) was an awesome game, I wish that they add another 4 characters as DLC (Shinnok, Tanya, Reiko, Jason (Friday the 13th) to keep the game fresh until the next Mortal Kombat comes out sometime in 2015?!
Or instead of Jason maybe a Killer Instinct character for the Xbox 360 version!!!
I can't wait to see what the next generation of consoles are going to offer that's so innovative, this is why im not in developing because I can't think of S.H.I.T but maybe better graphics..... :/
Mortal Kombat 9 was an epic fail, the best was Armageddon. 3D MKs were the best because of so many options and so awesome combos with those styles, and they had lots of new characters, not same sh*t like Scorpion or Sub-Zero, wada wada. And if they don't want to add new characters, what is the point of playing same characters all over again ? Where would they get new plots from ? Their fingers ??? Thanks God lots of MK poster boys/girls died in 9, so I hope in 10 we will see more characters like Havik, Kira, Onaga and so on.
"If you introduce another edition of your game on the same console, you cannot provide a radically different experience."
Yes you can, Boon you silly, silly man. All that a new console brings you is better visuals. Power is nothing. It's the ideas behind them. MK had its best game in years by going BACKWARD, and that's even the only series that gained ground by respecting it's roots from one or two generations ago.
There is no technical limitation on concept and vision. He could redesign MK anytime he wants, and release on the PS2. It's not the console at all.
"If you introduce another edition of your game on the same console, you cannot provide a radically different experience."
MK2 and MK3 are pretty damn different. I get what he's saying, though, because the last MK game pretty much played like a cleaner version of MKvDC with a super meter, and MKvDC played like a cleaner version of last gen's MK games. Makes sense to some degree, but it's still kind of an untrue statement.
RE0 and RE4 are drastically different, yet they're both Gamecube games.
MK 10 needs to be the game MK9 was, the new additions need to be fresh and thoughtful to make MK 10 a step above MK9.
To do something completely new is a double-edged sword.
For them to tread onto Soul Calibur territory once again (MKDA-MKA) is not in their best interest.
can't wait 2013/2014 subzero & Katina all day
Well i can see some truth in what he says
Innovation is risky since it forces people out of their comfort zones of expecting the norm, but hey it cn bear fruit if they pull it off. Regardless the MK games will sell well in NA with or without innovation if you slap in the new characters
that means more gimmicks... next time johny cage is gonna uppercut someone to mars and we have to wait for a 5 minute cinematic...
they can't make competitive games.. their mechanics suck and maybe they should learn to animate attacks correctly instead of being all wonky and awkward before they think they can innovate
I had mixed feelings about MK9. I've always loved the MK atmosphere and overdone gore. I hated how the characters had 10 different combos, but they just stood in one place executing them. At least in Deadly Alliance the combos advanced toward the enemy helping you get in close. MK9 did have some cool string combo innovations, but the controls were just too stiff and it made it easy to whiff.
It's a casual fighter, that's for sure.
Ed really @$$ raped this storyline. Screwed over one the greatiest MK characters Sub-Zero. Killed off the cooliest villian Noob Saibot. Killed almost ALL the heroes except for Raiden himself, Sonya and Johnny Cage.
I just hope, they revamp the MK9 storyline.
Look at the movement of an MK9 character and then look at the movement of any character in nearly any other fighting game. Those MK characters look so unnatural when in motion. Most of them look awkward just in their fighting stance. Once they start doing combos, they move like they don't have joints or something. MK2/MK3 movement even seems more fluid to me. MK9 just happened to be fun as all hell.
I know it's old, but watch a character in MK9's movement vs. a character in KI. Even though that game is old as hell, they still move more fluid.
Ive personally tried mk9 and i love the graphics the gameplay has alot to be desired for me. mk2 had the best gameplay ever for mk. you could have your own unique style and you just don't button mash like in mk9 and win. what im hoping for mk10 is getting back to basics like backdoor kicks etc. i wouldnt mind the run button added as well. tired of the auto kombos with a passion. look at SF4 they brought back the exact gameplay that made it great. hopefully boon takes notes and gives us what alot of us mk enthusiests what we want. a updated online modified version of mk2 that we can all be proud of.
oh and the reason why a KI remake hasnt been made is cause of it being a 3 party deal not just one like conker. in the way is nintendo and WB well which was williams/bally/midway lol.
